Dell G3 in house! What do you need to know?

I'm on BIOS 1.4.0 and I prefer it over 1.2.1 (which I upgraded from), keyboard seems more responsive and performance seems improved.

This laptop has been good to me, I use it mostly for VM's and daily computing.

I lugged my G3 17 on campus for a few days during midterm, it was a pain so I'm purchasing an 14" Inspiron strictly for school.

Two things I really dislike about this laptop and maybe all Dell laptops, it's very picky with drivers (OEM drivers don't work) and picky with memory upgrade.

 

Just wondering, what are everyone's undervolts for the i7-8750H. At -160 mV I am getting a bit of thermal throttling and power limit throttling in CS:GO.

 

PL throttling on an 8750h is almost a guarantee. It wants to pull significantly more than its typical 45watt TDP. -.125 on the Core and Cache is average and rarely can you be more aggressive on the Cache. Some far less such as the Zephyrus M at -.050 for example.

The G3 needed Undervolting on the CPU, GPU and LM to be at its best. Unless Dell gets more aggressive with their fan profile, I don't see that changing.

 

I picked up a G3579 a few days ago on a very nice deal via the Microsoft Store here in Vancouver BC. 8300H, 1x8GB RAM, 1TB HDD and GTX 1050Ti.

I've already ordered an Intel 9260 card off eBay and will order an NVMe drive and matching RAM stick soonish.

So far undervolting the CPU looks to be going great, I may have won the silicon lottery here. -210mV and it's stable under load. I was using Prime95 Small FFT test for the max-heat worse-case scenario and the fans we're doing fine at keeping it around 85. Using Intel XTU's stress test it's stable for a 30-minute test with the temps hovering around 60-66. I'll need to see how things go with the 1050Ti stressed when I've undervolted that. I'll probably re-paste at some point, although I'm not confident trying LM myself.

Also in case you're wondering, it is indeed (and unfortunately) the LG panel. I'll probably be upgrading that further down the line. I'm actually happy with it as is, although I guess I would see its deficiencies in an A/B test.

Just as curiosity has anyone tested the new 1.5.1 G3 bios? They have updated the Nvidia vbios, which can be good or not....

 

I had my finger on the trigger for one of those too. Some reason I just couldnt bring myself to do it. I tried to sell my 7559 GTX960 on Kijiji and theres a whole bunch of 960 powered laptops on there. I cant justify giving away mine for this upgrade. Seems the 1060 chipset is making its way into more budget laptops now so I will wait another year if I have to. The screen thing kinda turned me off a bit too.

 

I did a Unigine Heaven benchmark on 1.4 and then 1.5.1 (1080p, Extreme). Results were 926 and 920 respectively, so within margin of error.

 

Hi, I wanted to know which panel models are mounted on the G3 15: I am aware of the LG LP156WF6 IPS LGD053F I know there is also a BOE but what model is it? Are there any other panels that are mounted on the G3? I'm interested because I need the panel not to use PWM and I know from the reviews that the LG is fine but I do not know the BOE Thank you

Dell G3's are definitely a great bang for buck this year, I've had mine for almost 4 months now and I'm very happy with it.

Somehow I feel the one I ordered from Dell directly is better built than the one I purchased for my nephew from retail (Microsoft Store).

Also the G3's support CNVi Wi-Fi cards, the newer form factors seem to be better on battery and CPU cycles, I highly recommend an Intel 9560 over the 9260 for the G3's.

I wanted to get the Intel 9560 for my new Inspiron 7580 but it does not support CNVi cards despite the fact the Inspiron 7580 was released after the G3.

 

My G3 unfortunately developed a panel defect (the LG panel) and I had to return it at the Microsoft Store. Since it was still under the return period they just did a straight swap. This new machine I have now has a BOE NV15N42 panel (which also shows up as BOE07B0, something which Google cannot find anything about). This panel seems to be the same one used in Latitude 5580/90 laptops (and some others). I'm not a panel expert so I can't really say whether it's 'better' or not, although it does seem to be brighter. Probably not an improvement per se so I may wind up replacing it myself further down the line.

Was a shame to have to get the whole machine replaced because the temps were great with undervolting - this new device remains to be seen. I still need to test.

 

Hi everyone, I'm a proud 3779 i7 1060MQ owner, I use it as my main computer, for gaming in World of Tanks and doing some 3D animation for practice or the occasional freelance job. I haven't repasted it yet, but I used XTU to undervolt it at -0.135v. I noticed that under the XTU stress test I get the i7 to run at 3.88 ghz, temps of 67-74 C and TDP between 34-42 W, which I think is very good; but rendering in Maya-Arnold, I only get it to run around 3.25 ghz at 75 C and then it activates Power Limit Throttling at 45 W TDP.
Is it possible to improve this performance? I read about other 8750H notebooks that get around 3.5 ghz with Prime95, for example.

 

I just returned my refurb Dell G3 15" 3579 (i5 8300h, GTX 1050Ti, 8GB Ram, 256GB SSD) for $638. I am new to laptops but I did a basic stress test using Unigine Heaven for 5 min test and my results made me panic. Is this normal for this budge gaming laptop? Am I paranoid over nothing?

Here are the results (Keep in mind this was done after using a cooling pad and undervolting CPU by -150mV:



Also would like to note that I did a real world test by playing BFV for 30 min and the CPU temps were averaging 88c.

If this is normal and acceptable I was thinking about getting it again but with a GTX 1060 Max-Q. Thoughts? Refurbished G3 17" 3779

 

Yeah after undervolting the temperatures should never cross 90°C

 

So I noticed something strange on the dell outlet. In all my weeks of watching these laptops, I've never seen one with a 1060 pop up. This lead me to think that they don't have correct listings. I found one with an i7 that said "with usb-c" so I'm wondering if that means it will in fact be a 1060m with the tb3. Can anyone confirm that there is an option for usb-c and no 1060m? I thought that the usb-c was a 1060m exclusive. Maybe the listing that it has type c was the error... Who knows.

Edit 6/26 - So I can confirm that the i7-1050ti that I got on the outlet has TB3 yet not the 1060m. This further complicates things when people are looking to see if their computer is tb3 compatible. I'm ok with that, but now just need to make sure its 4 lane for e-gpu purposes.
