Hey guys! This is my first post, this is such a great helpful website I've been on here for hours. Anyway order my dell a little over a week ago, and the suspense of waiting is killing me lol! I check on the phone/website dozens of times daily, its a little sad how obsessed I am!

I'll cut to the chase and give you my specs:
    - Alpine White - No camera
    - Intel Core Duo T5250 (1.5GHz, 2MB Cache, 667 MHz FSB)
    - Windows Vista Home Premium w Aero
    - 160 GB Hard drive
    - Widescreen WXGA Display with TrueLife
    - 8x DVD+-/RW
    - NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS with 128MB GDDR3 dedicated memory
    - Wireless Mini Card
    - Bluetooth Module
    - 9 Cell Battery

    and

    19 inch LCD monitor :D

I've been reading that most people have a better processor, now I'm worried that I should have upgraded mine. I like to multitask with IE and Word and MSN. Will this be ok?

Aww I can't wait! Should be here on Monday or Tuesday, as there was a delay in parts or something.

    Ordered: 25/9
    EDD: 9/10

If you have a tracking number you can call Purolator. Otherwise the Internet updates are pretty good.

I recieved my laptop today....and I wanted to start be checking the system to make sure it was configured correctly

everything looks good (plus i got the SEC anti glare screen) except the hard drive.

I ordered a 120 gb 7200 rpm drive. But my capacity is listed at 99 gb with like 83.3 gb free space. Is this normal? I have heard that laptops come with lots of stuff installed (bloatware). And what about Vista? Does vista explain why I am listed at 99 gb capacity (instead of 120 gb), OR is vista contibuting to the hard drive from the 99 gb (I have 83.3 gb of 99.2 gb free)?

Lastly, how can I confirm that I have a 7200 rpm hard drive? My hard disk model is ST9120823AS if that helps.

BTW, I am not sure if I am imagining this, but the touch buttons seem a bit off. Have there been any reported problems with Dell mouse buttons? Sometimes, my left mouse button seems to stay depressed when I click it.

thanks in advance to anyone who can help

I openned mine yesterday. Just one regret - the jet black is like a fingerprint magnet. My volume up media key is a little bad, and the backspace is squeezy, but guess can live with it. so far, no other issue.

FAR: I got a 120 gigs too. I have the 99.9 on C and about 9 in the recovery. The capacity they advertise on HDDs is actually in Gb and not GB. So divide 120 by 1.024 thrice to get your figure in GB

    ok thanks mask

    still looking for:
    - how to check rpm of hard drive?
    - how much room does vista take?
    - anyone else have problems with the mouse buttons?

I finally got my 1420 today, and I love everything about it! I admit I was a tad hesitant about reading so many negative stuff here about Dells, but man....I am glad I did not cancel.

Here are some pics, sorry about the lousy angles:

Also...whats that little black thing in the slot in the left hand side at the front of the laptop?

Also, I checked and I have an LG screen, I dont notice any grain, but there is slight light leakage at the bottom, but its only noticeable when it starts up and you see the Windows loading screen. After that its not noticeable at all.

One thing that I really enjoy is how the left palmrest does not get as hot as the previous laptops I had bought and returned before buying this one (Toshiba Satellite, Sona Vaio CR, HP Pavilion).

I think if you right-click the Desktop, you may get a context menu where you can choose Nvidia Properties. That should find you a tab with brightness and gamma on it. I don't remember if it had contrast too (sent my 1520 back because of the yellowish screen).

I tried to place an order today for a 1420, there is no longer a choice of screens. The only offering is the high resolution (1400x900). When did the screen option end? Does any one think this is a temporary situation? I really wanted the matte screen.

Hey I have been having problems recently with my left mouse button getting stuck. I got my laptop in August and I hadn't noticed anything until now.

Anyone else having these problems or know any info about it?

My goodness, the Australian pricing is through the roof. I just ordered a similar system with a 320gb drive, Vista HP, 1gb ram (self upgrade to 4gb = $150 at most), 2nd day shipping and it came out to $974 before tax.

you can order the other screens you just have to find the dell site that has the 1420 order but the deals at $749 with WVGA+ with 2gb ram and 160gb screen is cheap, you get WVGA screen and 80Gb and 1gb ram for the same price if you dont want that $749 deal

I just got a refurnish 1420 for $618 you have to check each laptop info
TL screen rather have + screen, T5750 CPU,2GB ram,120Gb HDD,8x DVD Burner, Camera, 9 cell battery. going to install 160gb hdd and dual boot xp and vista if I find drivers fir direct media for XP to run on 1420 from maybe 1520

I just got my 1420 yesterday, McAfee was on it and the whole machine stalled every time i turned it on until I went to Safe mode, took it out and it worked fine. BUT then the next problem arises which I suspect is the Intel (R) PRO/Wireless 3945 Dual Band 802.1 thats causing the wole machine to stall with no way to move anything (requiring restart)

I tried to check my warranty using the Serial and it says there is NO WARRANTY(which is needed to get support) . I bought 2 years of it.
So now I've sent an email under Wrong Order. hope they get back to me soon so i can have my warranty, then get my support.

    Anyone having same problems?

It sounds like you got the computer pretty recently, so it would probably be relatively painless to do a reformat. It was actually much easier than I expected, just install windows and then all the drivers from the Dell cd. Mine seems about twice as fast since.

hey all, i'm looking to get one of the 1420s soon, but have a few questions.

    * how's the fan noise? low? does it come on frequently?
    * how many hours are you getting with the 9cell battery and moderate use?

    thanks!

I received a 1420 today as well. Record turn around time too, ordered Friday the 26th, shipped Monday the 29th second day, arrived today the 30th.

Pleased overall with it. Screen is excellent, same cheap Ricoh card reader though (unuseable with ReadyBoost due to audio interruptions).

what happened to the love for the 1420?

i just got my ruby red 1420 yesterday. it only took 7 days to get my laptop. i'm impressed! DHL shipping was great (and early), too!

so far, i'm really impressed. i had a dell before (xps m140) so i kinda knew what to expected. i really like this machine and the little things like the webcam software and wi-fi catcher are nice additions.

just wanted to stop in and say how much i like my 1420 so far! :D

the recovery partition, i believe, is what you use to restore your dell back to factory conditions (ie: just like it was the day you bought it). people use this sometimes when they sell their computer and want to wipe it clean for the next person (though i'm told you can still recover data).

i accidentally deleted mine when i was performing a clean install of windows XP on my last dell. it wasn't the biggest deal in the world since i had the windows XP restore disks, but without the partition, i had to go back in and re-install the drivers for things like the wireless card, etc.

if you don't need that 10GB right now, i'd recommend keeping the partition. if you DO need the 10GB, you can delete it (though i am not sure how), but make sure you have windows restore discs. hope this helps!

I have Windows XP installed on my 1420.. and using the XP touchpad drivers.. I noticed that the "Turn off touchpad when mouse is present" function does NOT work.. is there any fix for this? Extremely annoying.
