Wow. Personal attacks and attacks on my terms. Really good way to defend your actions. I'd be happy to explain to you how everything relates off line. It's off topic, but I'd love to direct you to some literature you can read.

However, you should know that fraud has nothing to do with profiting off of anything. Fraud means "a misrepresentation made recklessly without belief in its truth to induce another person to act." Dell's site is for students. Saying you are a prospective student when you are obviously not is a reckless misrepresentation. The object is to induce Dell to sell you a computer at a lower price point than you would normally get. Dell's injury is the difference between the two prices.

If people hadn't been rumbled it might even have been in Duke's interest to sell a lot of machines via their scheme. The more machines sold the more their leverage when bargaining for machines they themselves buy.

Anyway, the thing which drew my attention to this thread was the implication that misrepresenting yourself as being in the military to get a discounted Dell was a bigger crime than misrepresenting yourself as a student. Actually the crime is identical - though from other posts I gather the potential penalties might be a lot more severe. However, those penalties are probably intended to discourage other forms of misrepresentation such as flagging cars down and commandeering them - if people started to do that it would impair the ability of the military to do the same in a crisis.

The bottom line is that people are lying to take advantage to a deal that was intended for a different audience, and shorted the intended audience out. I don't know, and I'm not going to start looking for, the people who did get this deal...either by actually being a military/student or not. Frankly, it is between you and your conscience.
