I really feel bad for you having so many issues with your Adamo. Dell sends a person to repair your machine that is ill equipped to do so. Unacceptable to me and really takes the edge off your purchase satisfaction. Where is the love here? Hopefully the palm rest and base cover will arrive soon and your problems can be resolved quickly. Keep us updated.

the permanent method is what i am running. i can run youtube and have couple tabs like facebook email and weather channel and have multiple office programs running without a flaw. just with a single 1.4gz core running at power saver mode

Just got a HP 5310m Probook 2 days ago
It's a little thicker (just under 1"), about the same weight (3.7 lbs) but features a faster full voltage processor and longer battery life (5+ hours on real tests)
Also has a better keyboard, matte screen and easier upgrade options (not soldered in)

I got a brand new one, swapped in a 128gb SSD and upgraded to 4gb ram totalling to just above $700

If anyone else has issued with the Adamo and is looking for another lightweight 13.3" laptop, look into this one instead.
It's discontinued which is why they're going for cheap

    Yupp that's the one

Definitely doesn't look close to being as good as the Adamo
But functionally a lot better IMO
And I still like its looks :)

If you're happy with the Adamo don't bother changing, thats just a suggestion if you're like me and can't stand it

Repairman came today, totally removed everything from existing chassis, reinstalled in new chassis (new battery in new chassis). Service has been prompt and pretty professional, thank God its part of the xps line or i would be shipping back and forth.
I still like it, just a little disappointed. Apologies for rude remarks in (removed) post

is there a big difference between the SU9400 1.4GHz and the SL9600 2.1 GHz in terms of performance? if i do normal task such as web browsing, ms office, video/movies, music, flash games.. will i notice a big diff?

im looking at an onyx one but its only available in SU9400 1.4GHz / 2gb mem, a pearl version has the SL9600 2.1 GHz / 4gb one, but i really like the onyx, its more appealing to me aesthetically (which is the main factor why im interested in the adamo btw)

any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

    thanks,
    Jon

i doubt you'd notice any difference in average day to day use. The SSD is what really makes the performance so impressive (same with any other SSD based notebook).

but both of mine had 4gb ram

tags: Location sensor gps mobile broadband sim slot skyhook

Hi guys, I just got onyx from ebay, did fresh reinstall of win 7 and

    1) having troubles finding soft/drivers to get back that "skyhook wireless and gps location sensor thing" i've seen on the original installation. am I correct assuming that there is no actual GPS chip in the laptop? so the whole gps thing is just a location detection based on wireless triangulation? or there is one? Also i losy the "location sensor" entry under the control panel->sensors. how do i get back? is it due to the drivers absence? please share your wisdom here :)

    2) as far as i understand there were two variants of adamo with mobile broadband (SIM card slot and supporting hardware) and without. mine didnt list such support although i do have the sim slot. as there is a way to get mobile 3g on my adamo? is the chip still there? how do i do this?

many many thanks for your time in advance!!!

    tks for the replies.

another question, would a 1.4ghz/2gb fare better in terms of battery life vs. a 2.1ghz/4gb one?

since, performance seem the same for both on normal computing, the other consideration im taking is the battery life.

ill be buying my unit at the dell outlet shop, anyone here bought a refurbished one? how's the condition of the unit? are the blemishes something you'll regret or is it negligible?

    thanks!

    1. There's a slot to insert a wireless GPS mini-card. It was an option, doesn't come by default. I believe the program is useless without it. It doesn't do any triangulation or any of that. The location sensor thing I'm not sure about but it is almost certainly a driver you're missing.

    2. There's a slot for a 3g WWAN card as well. You'll need to buy a card and install it yourself.

The 1.4Ghz processor draws I believe 10 watts, the 2.1Ghz draws like 17 watts, so theoretically the 1.4ghz should last longer but again, in realistic terms, you probably won't notice a big difference between the two simply because the CPU isn't the only thing sucking away battery power. There's the LED screen, wireless card, etc.

Dell refurbs have a pretty good reputation but they aren't spotless like an Apple refurb.

First, after watching the Dell tech opening/closing this beast (twice), you cannot do it without a special plastic tool to unlatch the top from the bottom-you can do it without the tool, but you will damage the case without it.
Second, I would guess that 99.9% of people in this forum would not be able to do it, tool or not.
I bought the 3 year warranty from square trade with drop etc protection for $130. I do expect to get a refund of purchase price when the battery dies or it drops, whichever comes first.

hmm that's a good idea but i don't think that the battery will be covered by the warranty, unless u get the accidental damage cover and wait for an accident to happen ;)

and the battery/bottom cover is very easy to remove. you can do it with a plastic flat screw driver if you don't have the tool and that would not damage the case

@lucianmobile9: I just bought the same laptop, but the black version. But I wait for shipping from USA (I'm in Europe). What do you think about it? Does it work fast?

I have 3 questions to all

    - Does the Dell warranty work for Europe if I've bought it from USA?
    - Should I get a SqareTreade warranty (I think they have hq in UK)
    - If both aren't possible and my battery fails after 1-2 years, what to do? Will there be batteries available cause I think this model is discontinued?

yes the warranty works in europe. ask your seller about changing the warranty in your name
i've just searched ebay for a battery and i could only find 1 and that was a used one. so i guess we are doomed :D
i say buy 2 laptops and keep one for spare parts :D

    Hello,
I know that this is just a support/questions forum, but I am selling a Pearl Dell Adamo. This laptop still has Dell's warranty which will expire after 12/6/11. The only thing about this Dell is the hinges are a little bent(I just bought it on Ebay a couple of weeks ago). Everything works fine even the screen, it's just a little bent. The reason why I bought this one is because I read of complaints about the Onyx one getting too many fingerprints, but I've decided to go with that one. The warranty is under my name so I can transfer to whomever that buys it. Thanks and sorry for any inconvenience!

Email me for pictures and any inquiries!

Of course Paypal and CONUS only!

    Price: 850.00

    Intel Core2 Duo SL9600 2.1GHz, 4gb DDR3, 128gb ssd

    Oh yea it's NOT refurbished!

I disagree that new with bent hinges is better than a refurbished adamo. When you consider that a laptop is just the sum of its parts and typically when an electronic part fails its just removed and replaced with a new part and therefore the working nature of the whole sum is restored to the exact same condition of a new unit.

In my opinion there is no difference between a working new and a working refurbished computer of any type. it either works or it doesnt.

In addition when you consider that i paid 779.00 delivered for mine and its a refurbished unit and its perfect in every way i will argue that got a better deal.

The outlet is the way to go. I've purchased several from there with no problems. I have one rule, I won't buy a model or configuration that isn't current available. I just bought one that was listed as a scratch and dent, price was 739.00 I had a 20 % off coupon which took it down to 591.00. After two weeks I still cannot find the scratch or dent. It's in perfect condition and runs like a champ.

I wonder if Dell is phasing these Adamos out. I called to set up a return for this one because some of my important programs won't run on a 64 bit platform (my oversight). They offered me another 60.00 dollars off to keep it. I still have about a week before my 21 days are up so I may. They did not want to take this back! That would put my price at 531.20.

Thanks a lot for clarifying. I'm not tech savvy and always grew up new is better than "old," but now that you've elaborated on what the difference is it makes more sense
