Ok, here is the first useful info from someone that actually saw a working prototype of the new Adamo:

    http://www.notebooks.com/2009/09/09/dell-adamo-xps-a-9-99mm-thick-concept-notebook/

    1) It is not a tablet. That could explain how thin it is but they say that the Adamo XPS has a full keyboard that flips away from the display.Even more amazing!

    2) It is extremely light too. They added that it couldn’t have been more than two pounds
    !

So, I guess the big questions are about the hardware, the screen size/resolution, the price, and the release date...

I'm here sitting looking at my Nokia E90 and wondering how the hell did they manage to make a notebook at 10mm.

I don't care less if they stuffed an Atom into it but even if they had, its still a marvel of packaging. Wonder what they'd do for heat and structural integrity? Its too thin to have a usable mechanical keyboard.

    Another thought:
The teaser was released on on 9 Sept 2009 or 9/9/09.
    It is 9,99mm thin.

Is all this a hint that it is a 9" device?

Will be very disapointed if they put an Atom in there.

Dont understand why so many manufacturers keep pushing the technology to only make laptops thinner, instead of working on performance/batterylife/heat and overall stability and compactness.

I have a feeling that this machine will be low specced with a way too high pricetag, but only time will tell ;-)

On the bright side it wont have a vga , it would't fit! How do you even fit ports on this thing, the macbook air has 3 and this thing is half the size!

And what Dell is going to do to deliver the same level of disappointment and shattered dreams as with the last Adamo. But I'm optimistic they'll exceed in this regard.

I refuse to get excited this time until I actually see a "first looks" review

Apart from the mass, where was the shattered dreams of the last one, unless we're counting the people such as those I referred to earlier?

If you go back to the beginning of this thread when the 1st gen Adamo was first teased, there was high hopes that Dell had actually come out with an MBA killer - and there were a number of people - myself included, who were willing to order one sight unseen. However, once the pricing, specs and reviews started coming out, it was obvious that Apple really didn't have anything to worry about. The June price cut on the MBA put the nail in the coffin for the current Adamo - at least in my opinion.

I really want to see the Adamo take a bite out of Apple. So far, that hasn't happened - thus, my shattered dreams.

But now, our current Adamo is an XPS line as well. You can check it easily, on the dell website drivers/downloads you can find files for Adamo 13 just under xps laptop (choosing by the list not by service tag).

So finally the use of the XPS modifier outside the Studio line...

Now the only question regards specs and price. The current generation of Adamo wasn't exactly impressive in either of those categories and now this plans to half the size? In any case, I doubt price will improve much so long as size decreases and performance increases (likely meaning heat output increases as well).

It looks 33 times wider than it is tall,
which suggests a width around 13in.

Even with the bezel required to cover
the tapering, that leaves plenty room
    to fit a 12in screen.

As long as Adamo is running cool all the time and MBA overheats by mere watching of Youtube video, Adamo is a winner and MBA killer in my book. Of course the price is a tad higher than anticipated, but personally i'm more than willing to pay premium for a laptop that i can actually use, unlike MBA, which has more power, but you can't even us that power without running into problems. High numbers on CPU do not mean anything if thermal design of chassis is flawed. And there are more people who don't have problem paying for Adamo, so can't see how was this product disappointing. Sounds like sour grapes. Dell is on the right track and Adamo line should have interesting future, there is room for improvements but even Rome wasn't built in one day :) If Dell is smart, they will address some criticism directed at Adamo 13 and make this slim Adamo extraordinary. But don't expect the price to be low, premium product was never meant to be affordable to masses, no matter what hardware is inside.

It certainly is a hell of a lot more stable in regular use. I guess though that some people have a problem reconciling real world performance that they would actually use vs better figures on paper, because they aren't quite sure what they actually want. On that, anyone will have to conclude that Apple is very good at marketing to, and delivering.

I don't have performance issues with any of my ULV machines, the Adamo included - both in terms of stability and also the ability to do what I need out of them while mobile, while stuttering will occasionally strike with even the current Air (and it's not like I'm video editing / expecting Solidworks to run. It's all Office stuff).

I also can't get that excited about the XPS - it seems to me that from prior experience that Dell *could* fall into the trap of the over-bleeding-edge in terms of what they could deliver for the time, and that Sony is probably still the only manufacturer who has any likelihood of delivering this machine with no or few 'Rev.A' issues. I kind of doubt HP/Apple/etc could deliver either, if they'd come out with something the same.

Just two years ago Dell totally botched the launch of the M1330, then a flagship 'new generation' consumer laptop which was a lot less ambitious than this machine - and the M1330 certainly for me is unique among Windows-native laptops I've had for achieving consistent lemon status equal to my Macbook/Pro/Airs, which makes it the worst Windows-native laptop I've ever owned.

Dell build quality on their flagships has certainly improved and the Adamo is one of the testaments to that, but since the Adamo is a more solid, conservatively engineered take on the Air I remain quite sceptical that they can carry off a leading-edge machine in the same manner.

Just taking a guess here, but it looks like the fold out part in the pic below is the keyboard. It has rubber feet towards the end, and it looks like there is a webcam in the center of the part that doesn't fold out. There's vents on the fold out part as well.

I attached a horrible photoshop of how I think its going to open.

    Not what I see.

That pic is the bottom of the chassis - you can see where it comes apart to access internals.

Also you can easily see the battery in the back (see the latch?).

I see what you are saying with the nice photoshop, but how would the system stay open if it is that top-heavy? Also, why would there be vents under the keyboard if it is just the keyboard that folds out?

I am increasingly looking to getting one of these to replace my Eee PC. But I want the Adamo XPS. If that thing is not Atom based and it doesn't cost a fortune, then I will be getting it.

The battery in that position would remedy the top heaviness, wouldn't it :p Plus, I was thinking an LED LCD screen can't weigh that much. It would certainly be an odd form factor. Lets hope Dell releases some more info soon.

Am I right in saying that the keyboard is set into the underside - that you get a sloped board when you open the machine? Can't tell really - the slope would seem to be excessive if it did work that way.

That's presumably an Atom too. An IGP is fine for me, but anything less than a C2D ULV is really out of the question for running today's OS's effectively, even if assisted by an SSD. I'm starting to see the Z600 more and more in my future.

Haven't tested video yet, but the system is very quick and silent.

It boots in 30 seconds and apps load fast - faster than my desktop! That is expected though with the new Samsung SSD.

It is silent. The fan may come on once in a while but it isn't loud. The system has stayed cool and slightly warm under full load.

And, yes, I have the Admire.

Just put Win7 on this thing and I am LOVING it!

This system is def a keeper :D Anyone who has any hesitation about ordering the base model, do not worry.

Win7 shows memory usage at 33% on 2GB, so it is more than enough.

The new samsung ssd is absolutely fast as can be and the system is ultra solid.
