Well, just ordered her on Sunday night.

    Dell XPS M1530
    Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2 GHz, 4MB Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    Crimson Red Finish
    1GB DDR2-667
    160GB 5400 RPM HDD
    nVidia GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB GDDR3
    Integrated Bluetooth
    Intel Wireless-N Card
    Glossy WXGA (1280x800) Screen
    Windows Vista Premium
    Slot-loading 8x DVD+/-RW Drive
6-Cell Primary Battery and 9-Cell Additional Battery

In the end, the price was $1201 before tax ($1261 after with Next-Day Shipping). I was disappointed that I missed the stackable coupon, because I could have gotten the T7500 and a 7200RPM HDD for only $25 more. I had also wanted the LED backlit 1440x900 screen, but I want the laptop for next semester and I didn't think I would be able to get as good a deal. It also came with a $200 gift card, with which I guess I'll purchase the 15.4" Red Sleeve, a Bluetooth wireless keyboard and laser mouse set, and a nice set of headphones (possible Bluetooth). I may just use it to pick up a nice sized thumb drive.

Another bummer is that they only approved my Dell Preferred Account for $1000, so I was unable to get the 3% discount from that - cost me about $30. Jerks.

One of my friends who has a MacBook Pro and loves it has been telling me all along to get a MacBook Pro, but seriously. I checked out the MacBook Pro, and it would have cost me twice as much to get a MacBook Pro with equivalent hardware - even cutting the MacBook Pro's price with educational discounts and accounting for the MacBook's screen.

She's supposed to ship on January 2nd. I'm seriously looking forward to this baby.

Wnabe17, maybe you can find interesting this pdf by Nvidia that I am attaching. Of course, as it is made to sell Quadro cards, it talks well of them. But I find interesting some things, and as a no gamer (ignorant) I do not understand what makes the game GPU more especific (better) for game than a Quadro, at least a Quadro FX.
Ops, I can't attach, it is too big.
Well, I do not remember from where exactly in Nvidia site I downloaded it, but its title is Quadro_vs_GeForce0309.pdf..... Sorry. They were talking about why Quadro cards are better than consumer's ones...

Anyway, i want to tell you: IT IS A LATITUDE D830! Ordered and paid!
D830 with Quadro 140M, a T7500, 2x1024 of ram, 160giga 7200rpm HD, WSXGA+ (matte, as it was the only option, but I must be sincere, many people suggested to me a matte, and they convinced me!), Xp Pro, DVD+/- RW, Roxio 9, Power DVD 7, 9 cells battery, 360 Bluetooth, 3 years NBD warranty, 3 years Gold Technical Support! And for just 1284 euro!!! And as i will have VAT back, i am paying it 1040! (well, 1070 with the expedition costs).
She was wonderfull! It is an incredible price, believe me!The same configuration in the italian site was 400 euro more!!!
    I am really satisfied...
And she also will recommend an urgent delivery.
    I couldn't ask more.
So, thanks to all you who helped me, I really appreciate it!
And, we'll see, if someone tells me how, I could review it...
    :D
    BYE!

I received my Vostro 1400 yesterday and here are my first impressions:

    1. I have both the 6 cell and the 9 cell batteries and both seem to wobble (doesn't feel secured in place).

    2. The screen is good for the most part but it washout vertically very quickly with any movement. The best position for viewing is by pulling the screen back further than I used to, and even then it does not cover the whole screen. The screen does well on white surfaces but not so well on black surfaces (not good for view DVD). The screen model is CMO1429. No graininess though.

    3. Finger prints is kind of annoying.

Otherwise, it is a nice compact laptop.

I have not read the manual yet but how do you turn off the WiFi?
( I think I got it. There is a WiFi switch in the front that does that. On my 9300 it used to be fn and F2)

XPS M1330 - ordered from the Outlet. I placed the order on Sunday. Laptop shipped Monday morning and I had it on Wednesday with free shipping. Specs are plain-Jane basic, but is a nice upgrade over my old machine:

    - CCFL screen
    - T5250 processor
    - 120 gb hd
    - 4 cell battery
    - Bluetooth
    - Intel wireless card
    - 1 gb ram (added a 2 gb module from Newegg for $34)

after the 15% coupon, total price was $671. Everything looks like new, with one exception - the 'P' in the XPS label is missing. Contacted Dell and they've offered to replace the screen or the system (note - it was 'certified refurbished' - not 'scratch and dent') - which I'll take them up on after the holidays.

Very impressed with the system so far. The CCFL screen is much thinner than I thought (feared?) after seeing comparison pics here - I guess the LED screen must be -really- thin. I did a fresh install of Vista to try out, and it's been surprisingly not bad - but I'll probably install Ubuntu soon. Battery life has been a great surprise - I'm getting over 2 hours of normal work with the 4 cell. Given the price, I can't imagine getting anything else even comparable.

I am surprised that Dell's QC can't catch missing P (pun intended), but I do like the computer otherwise.

Mmm... I have not a solution, but for what I learnt in these weeks of intensive information in the web (to decide which notebook to buy), I guess it can be because it is wxga+, not wsxga+ or wuxga. And, for what I had been told by a friend, Dell's matte screen have generally more viewing angle. i don't know how this can be, as Dell's screen are not the same all the time, they have different manufacturers, but...

I ordered the following today for 42,500 [actually they quoted 45,000 but on this Notebook forum I was told to bargain, so I asked what discount they could offer and they knocked off 2.5K]. [BTW 40=1 USD so the system was about 1060 USD]

    Dell Vostro 1200
    -Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T5470
    -1.6GHz, 2MB Cache, 800 MHz FSB
-Genuine Windows Vista(R) Home Basic 32 bit
    -Dell(TM) Keyboard with Touchpad (English)
    -017 -Integrated Fast Ethernet 10/100/1000
    -Internal 56K Modem
    -RJ-11 Modem cable (AP)
    -12.1 inch WXGA (1280 x 800 screen resolution)
    -2GB (2 X 1024MB) 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
    -012 -Integrated Stereo Sound
    -Intel(R) Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3 1100
    -No Floppy Drive
    -160GB SATA Hard Drive
-Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Combination Drive with dual
    -Dell(TM) Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module
    -Intel(R) 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini-Card
    -6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

I thought it was a pretty decent deal and is the smallest that I could find in under 100K.

Weight is 1.9kg [as against my current 3kg]. There is a thinkpad which is 1.6kg and starts at about 90K, and the Vaio 1.2kg is 114K.

K=1000. Should have clarified, 42,500 where 40=1 USD so the price of my system was about 1060 USD.

I originally wanted a red Inspiron 1720 but I was willing to give up the red to get a discount by purchasing a Vostro through my work account. I saved about $350 and got an upgraded processor, Vista Ultimate and a 3-year Warranty. (I also got a nice discount and some serious upgrades on a Precision workstation ordered at the same time for work)

I also really wanted a 7200 RPM hard drive but couldn't get it from Dell on the Vostro so I ordered one after the fact… not realizing the laptop needs a separate carrier, adaptor and screws to add the drive. Ordered the carrier and adaptor from Dell but I still didn't get the screws with the carrier. Did a little research and found the screws aren't offered online and it was a PIA to get them through customer service. I looked at all the local stores but couldn’t find them so I ordered them from an e-bay store. Once I get the screws the 7200 RPM drive will be my boot/system drive and the drive that came with the system will be a secondary storage/backup drive.

Finally… for some reason the 1 Year Free DataSafe wasn’t on the computer when I received it. I’m in the process of trying to get it… Other than that, I’m loving my new Dell :)

    3GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
    160GB 7200 rpm Hard drive

All around great, and it arrived 13 days after the order (Dec. 5th I think).
The only problem is that terrible speaker problem other people have been having, which is actually making me consider dealing with Dell warranty people...

Got 2 M6300's on the 10-dec-07 (Ordered on the 13-nov, ETA was 7-Jan-2008!!!), but I must say, I initially specced the M90, but as Dell was releasing the newer model, I waited. Got them at a presumeably bargain R14,300 (+-$2000) as opposed to R21,000 (+-$3000) , ex vat prices, but the wait almost made me cancel the order! Doing some browsing, I figured Dell would have some delays, so I was quite pleased with the overall delivery time of just over 3 weeks as opposed to 2 months!

The promotion was a fixed spec machine, (T7500 2.2GHz, 2GB,160 GIG 7200,17" WUXGA ) so there was no room for upgrade, as I feel the ram is a bit on the low side. Mind you, 2 gigs is ok for now, but with Vista eating up about a gig on startup, I can see the upgrade happening sooner than later.

My first impression of the machine was the size/weight. Since I've been working on a NW8000 for the past 3 years now, I was expecting this baby to be heavy and huge. Quite the contrary, the machine is relatively light. The power brick is however, "a brick!". Compared to the NW, it's about 4 times the size! Overall looks and layout are really good (4/5); I truly like the keyboard layout, better that the HP8730, as you don't have to work on the left side of the keyboard due to the numeric keypad (personal preference though). Thank God Dell did away with the annoying pointing stick. A real waste in my opinion.

Switching on the laptop, the first thing that hits you is the quality of the screen. Dell, well done! Great quality. Anyone reading this, don't waste your time on the smaller resolutions. Go for the WUXGA. (Anyone know if there are 2 types of WUXGA? South Africa's website only lists 1 type, don't know if its got the standard WUXGA or the WUXGA Truelife lcd panel). Connected to wireless ADSL with ease, and working in the TV room (3 rooms away, 2 walls, +-20 meters) I get 4 bars! Wireless on this baby is excellent! I can even pick up the neighbours broadband, now all I need is the key :).

Got about 4+ hours browsing the net. Battery life is relatively good, (i would think so). The machine is EXTREMELY quiet. Hardly heats up at all, but the "brick" can get really hot!

I don't know if the 1600M is a better choice than the 3500M, anyone have any takes on that. I haven't had a chance to run some CAD / game stats to see how it does under load. but on overall DVD playback, the movie was great to watch on the laptop. Sound quality is fair. Not bad, but not great either.

Overall, a great machine. This is primarily a work-based laptop, so the first thing we did on the second machine was trash Vista, install XP Pro SP2, and Ubuntu 7.10. XP had the drivers for the memory card reader missing! Funny thing is, I called Dell, logged the call, and after a few days, lo and behold, its on the website! This is AFTER I hunted around the net and installed it manually. Even more strange, is that the drivers are actually loaded on the supplied CD! Have a look for yourself!

    Gripes:
    1) Vista
    2) Vista
    3) Vista
...... Since these machines are my 'bread and butter', I CANNOT afford to have a machine that is 95% reliable. Look, it's not Dells fault, but I feel that Dell, even with the promo, should have offered the choice of XP on the machine, which they didn't. XP is now 100% configured, and the machine is as rock-solid as you would want it! I'm gonna wait till SP1 for Vista before I install a 'triple-boot'.

There is 1 bug though, the bluetooth. It works fine for sending/receiving files, but to use your HSDPA phone as a modem, you gonna have problems. In the bluetooth software, try to add a com port using the supplied software. It doesn't allow you. (Anyone got a workaround for this?)

Ubuntu has been great on my HP machine (7.04), however, the 7.10 that I installed has got some issues. No sound. Propriety driver does not work. You need to backport to get the sound working, but then the video driver gets messed up. If anyone has got Ubuntu 100% working , please post some feedback. I would greatly appreciate it.

Hopefully I'll get some time next week to post some performance stats of Vista vs XP, as I still have one machine running on the pre-installed Vista.

    Until then, cheerio...

Thats the best thing to do, you can always upgrade the CPU on the laptop, can't with a video card.

this is very good question . maybe you should started as thread so more people can give you their opinios..

I can fix almost everything in a computer and usualy don't go with extended warantee. but this time I did because it was such a good deal (I got the xps 1530 with the 1399$ option).. If you don't know much about laptops and how to take them apart and fix them. it's safer to go with 3 year plan.

I think you can extend your warantee as long as you still under warantee.. not 100 % about dell warantee.

With Dell, at least Dell Italia, I learnt this: the higher is the initial configuration, the higher the discount you can receive. Also, if it is for consumer, you have less discount, if it is for an even little buisiness, you have more discount. And with this I mean both if the notebook is a buisiness line as Latitude or Vostro or Precision, maybe this XPS which is offered in the buisiness section, and also I mean if you speak by phone with the buisiness agents.
About the warranty, I guess that DVMXPS is right, even if there are things that I am not sure that can be fixed like that, and a warranty is always good. And considering that by putting it you can maybe hava more discount... My agent was putting things I never asked for. I asked why, she told me that if she would have not put them, i would have paid more. So, as you see, I paid less and had more....
No man, me too... I am expecting it just tomorrow, the last of the year!
I hope, at this point, that all will be ok, so at least I will spend the first of the year enjoying it... :)

Have you bought it by internet or by phone? By phone with consumer line or with buisiness line? With a VAT code (I do not know how do you call in your country, in italy all buisiness have a VAT code. Buying with VAT code is usefull to have a better treatment, generally, and also because you can then have back the VAT... I used the VAT code of my uncle enterprise, and I saved 240 euro.... Buying with VAT has got the only disadvantage that only consumers can have, for law, the right to give back something bought by phone, mail, or internet, just because "they do not like it" or the product is not as expected. WIth VAT, you can give it back only if it does not function well, but I guess they will change it only with the same model.)...

    amazing notebook.
    Crappy support.

Ah well, maybe Sigmatel is hiding the driver that the dell website and tech support don't know about :(

    As in the signature...
    Received the 31/12/07...
    Still testing it...
First impression is a not very good display. There is a darker zone at the center, more precisely in 2/5 or 2/4 from the bottom, which arrives till the borders, where it is even darker and a bit yellow.
With certain colours as desktom you can't notice it really (as with red), but with white, white/light-blu, and othere light colours you can. It does not changes depending on how I moove.
Also, it is a bit grainy, but I do not think it is the Nvidia, or the LCD itself, but more the outside panel which protects the LCD. It is not completely transparent, it is like, those glasses you can put in bathroom windows to not let people look inside? Well, not so much, but, just to let you understand.
I saw the Asus of my syster, it have it too but much less. Also the old Satellite I am using now has got it, but even lesser.
So, I am planning to ask for a change of display. I do not know if I can, as it is not exactly a faulty display, and by buying not as private but with VAT code I lost the right of giving back without reasons.
The technician at the phone told me that he sees that in the D830 Dell uses only one kind of WSXGA+, so even changing it I would have the same type. i could ask for the WUXGA but I really fear it would be too little text in a 15.4" screen.
Also there is a problem in the keyboard: the spanish keyboard I have has got the @ in the 2 key, it should be available with ALT GR + 2 but there is no way...
The Dell technician made me try anything, and finally want to send me a new keyboard.
And, to finish, when windows starts or closes, the speakers do a click/crack or something like that.

I had 3 OS's on my HD, decided to dump vista and just stick with XP and Ubuntu.

I love how I people tell me about how they like vista for the pretty aero glass interface, then I show them my pretty compiz configured ubuntu desktop. It's the cube that's always the clencher :) oh, and I DO have a desktop cube for XP too, yod'm 3d.

wheeee! ordered mine New Year's Eve and it shipped today! free next business day shipping, so that means Monday, I guess. bit of a bummer that I'll have to wait with anticipation all weekend, but I guess I can't complain when I was expecting more toward the end of next week rather than the beginning, even expecting that it would be earlier than the estimated ship date of 1/16.

so here's what I'm waiting for:

    XPS M1530 Crimson Red
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2GHz processor
1440x900 screen (I think the only upgrade I made to their "Best" option, apart from adding Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 Software)
    3GB memory
    250GB 5400rpm hard drive
    256MB nvidia GeForce 8600M GT

am wondering whether I should have opted for the 9 cell battery or even the 6 plus 9 backup, but I don't know that I'll often be taking it places I can't plug it in anyway. and I'll probably regret not getting the accident coverage, but I'm pretty careful *knock on wood*

    *waits*

Hi. When did you order? and when did you receive your laptop? I ordered mine on the 31st december, and i received an email from dell today showing that my estimated delivery date is on th second of february. I was simply disappointed... How could they take so much time???????????

    the spec is as follows.

    Dell vostro 1700 17" display + truelife
    Intel core 2 duo t5250
    2GB ram
    160Gb HDD
    geforce 8600mGT 256MB

and by the way, is the graphics card integrated? or i will be able to install a more powerful one in the future

    yay! got mine today!! :)

lovin' it so far, except for the damn touchpad, but that was expected. gonna have to get a real mouse pronto.

still slowly feeling my way around the machine. setup was a PITA. hate reading all those stupid agreements and trying to figure out what the heck I'm supposed to do next.

ETA: have noticed a slight "clicking" sound from the hard drive on occasion, but its not too frequent or annoying. also, after a few hours being on, no intense programs or multitasking yet, there is a bit of warmth, but nothing uncomfortable, so we'll see when I push it a little harder over the next couple days how the temps feel. again, overall so far so good. think this machine will be a good fit.

    as stated above, it's an
    XPS M1530 Crimson Red
    T7500 2.2 GHz
    1440x900
    3GB RAM
    250 GB HD

I went with the screen I wanted (resolution wise... quality remains to be seen). I also went with the 8600M GT.

Dell just wanted too much for the processor and especially memory... with Penryn here today, it should drive Merom prices down, and perhaps we will get lucky with a BIOS upgrade... and be able to install a early Penryn...

Ordered January 2nd, supposed to arrive today.

Now... I understand the new revision motherboards are going out on builds after the 1st, which supposedly fixes the headphone jack noise, and as far as screens go.. I think that sight unseen you may end up with a grainy screen on any laptop from 14" to 15" these days.. Sounds like I'm making excuses, but I'm not. The MacBook Pro has the exact same issues. Probably uses the same screen(s).

So... anyway, way I see it, if my screen arrives and it sucks, I'll be chatting with tech support that day, and getting a replacement out of them... and using my first day anger (fake) to explain why they need to compensate me for my time... in dollars. Dell or otherwise. Or they can have it back right now.
I fully expect to be successful.

Guess what happens to the MacBook Pro folks? They get ragged on by the 'rogue geniuses' (their tech guys) for being to picky, don't get anything fixed, or even an option to replace it, and charged a $200 restocking fee if they want to return it in the first 30 days, unless they get it waived... and that usually means contesting the credit card charge, and playing it heavy handed. Nice. And they say Dell sucks. Guess what happens when they bring it up on the Mac official site? Threads locked and deleted. Nice.

I think my $800 buys quite alot.

I'll upgrade memory to 4gb as soon as I know I'm keeping it. $70 for 4GB.

I'll see if I need to upgrade the processor for any of my apps... though the longer I hold off, the better and cheaper the new one will be at around $200, and finally, I plan to switch out the HD to an external case, and buy a new one.. Also when and if I need it. $117 for 250GB.

    So folks... thats the $1100, 2.4ghz core 2 duo (or faster),4gb ram,250gb HD,8600M GT, 15" laptop plan.
