So it was suppose to be next day and it went ground. It was suppose to be delivered by the 17th and then UPS changed it to the 18th, and then changed it to the 17th again. Now they dont even know where the package is located. Its due for delivery today but its not on a truck according to the rep or the tracking system

I got it. Two days earlier then the estimated ship date. It would have been 4 days earlier but a snow storm stopped it on Friday so I got it on Monday.
Dell XPS M1710, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33ghz, 2G memory, 512mb Nvidia GeForce 7900GTX, 150GB Sata Hard drive, Windows XP Media, 1500 draft 802.11n Wireless (Mistake)

All I can say is WOW. This is the first and only time I am probably going to post on this so here it goes.

After I got it and went through all the Dell crap and installed what I wanted and removed what I did not want (which was allot of stuff. I was thinking why did I not get a MAC) but anyways. It would not connect to the internet wireless. So called dell and it turns out that it is not compatible with my Belkin Pre-N router so they are sending me a new wireless card.
Then I ran 3Dmark06 score 4850 something. that is with nothing turned off just a stock run.
    Then I played Oblivion. WOW.
Then I did a experiment. My Desktop pc is a P43.2ee with a Terrabyte of hard drive space in a Raid 5 with a x800xt, ASUS MB and 2G of Kingston Hyper X Memory. 2 years ago when I upgraded that pc it was basically the best I could get.
Back to the Experiment. Using the same program (Nero) on each machine I transcoded a 180mb video from avi to DVD format. This blew me away. The old powerhouse PC took 5 minutes and 30 seconds to do this. The XPS M1710 took 1 Minute 12 seconds. Welcome my new video editing machine.
I am going to turn my pc into a external hard drive basically. With a 1G ethernet switch I will get faster speeds then a external hard drive on firewire.
So far I have noticed very little heat. My old laptop is a ACER Ferrari 3000 and that thing would cook my legs off, make my hands sweat.
I have one problem that I can not figure out yet. The Direct media will not play or see sometimes my videos. I am going to have to work on that to see why and what format they have to be in for it to work. I think the interface on that kind of sucks. Could have been better. UP one Level down one lever. I feel like I am using a FTP for sending files not a media center.
They did not offer the option of a carrying case so I got the back pack. Very well made etc but really I do not think it is my cup of tea. Plus the bix XPS logo on it is a good invite for someone to steal it. But it is cool looking and probably for most people that do buy this machine they will like it.

The Keyboard is really cool. Almost looks like it is painted on. Very neat looking they way it blends togeather. Very good rest space for your hands while typing. All the lights are very cool!!!
The Screen is awsome. I am a widescreen person now.
Sound is ok. No it is not my 5.1 logitech speaker system but it is acceptable. Can still sound a little bit like a tin can.
Thats all I have to say about that.

Hi everyone, a new member here.
My wife has recently bought me a Dell Inspiron 6400.
The timing was perfect because 2 days after my Laprtop arrived my Desktop died so this will be my primary PC for a while. :(

Did the Inspiron decide to kill my Desktop for more attention? Who knows but I'm impressed with it so far. I got a 512MB stick of ram from a friend for £25 and got the GFX upgraded to the Radeon X1300 Hypermemory as it worked out the same as the base model costs now with the money off at the time.

I'm having to do my gaming on this thing at the moment and Civilization 4, UT2003 and Far cry run fine so it's not too bad.

I do miss my A64 3700+, my 2GB's of ram and my 7800GT but I'll just builld a new PC after xmas...... :D

I know it's my first post, just wanted to say thanks for the information. I ended up getting a XPS M1710 through Outlet after reading all of the information provided here. It's loaded, 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB ram, 512 7900 GTX, and with the 3 year + complete care I got it for $2800. I did a config on Dell Home and it came to almost $4000. Hopefully my certified refurb will work as well as everyone else's that posts here.

I'd been checking the outlet site for about a week before this deal popped up. Was actually hunting a M90 since they look more professional but I just couldn't pass this one up.

Probably no on Vista, does anyone even know if they're offering it in Outlet sales? With Outlet inventory changing by the hour I couldn't hold off on this one waiting to see if I would get Vista.

I would have bought an Inspiron but 15.4" UXGA was not available on Inspiron. I'm annoyed I couldn't get built-in Audigy sound, an affordable 4 year warranty or a 160GB hard drive. I would have bought a more powerful graphics card if it were available. The Intel wifi management software wouldn't connect to my wireless access point. I switched to XP's wireless management--no more problems. The rig cost $2000 including tax (see specs below). I'd have spent more if a 160GB hard drive and more powerful graphics card had been available. I'll rate myself satisfied, not deleriously happy. I'd buy the machine today for the same money.

Dell should design for owner-operators and institutional buyers, not business vs. consumer. I might prefer the alleged build quality of the "business" machine and the extra features of the "consumer" machine. I mighth use the machine for work and play and be equally serious about both.

I found the notebook section of the Dell website confusing and frustrating. I don't want to search each model separately for its features. Annoying.

If the build quality of the Latitude is superior to the Inspiron I don't see it. I've handled both and they seem equally well built. I've read a few people saying the latitude has metal in the shell. My Latitude shell appears to be all plastic. Metal shell peices is a gimick IMO. Better to spend the money in other places.

The machine is noticeably cooler all the time than the Toshiba 5105 S607 it's replacing. There appears to be an exhaust port on the back and bottom so setting the machine on apolstery hopefully isn't a problem. I put a utility called speedfan on the machine and it tells me the internal temperature is maintained at 96 degrees. The fans waited until 158 degrees on the Toshiba. The toshiba required a video card replacement and now the display is dead--otherwise I'd have waited for Vista.

The Latitude seems a bit less weight than my 15" Toshiba so it can be handled the same way.

The Dell power supply is noticeably bigger and clunkier than what came with my Toshiba but I suppose I'll get used to that. The AC cord is about a foot shorter than I would like but it appears the connector is standard so I can find a longer cord to take its place if I don't get used to it.

I think the 15.4 inch UXGA (1200 X 1920) screen is at least as good as the 1200 x 1600 screen in my 4 1/2 year old Toshiba. The pixels seem to be a little sharper but the colors might be a little less brilliant compared to the old Toshiba. (I prefer hi res UXGA but don't get it unless you don't mind small text.)

The 2.0 Mhz Core 2 Duo processor with 2GB of ram is noticeably faster than the old Toshiba with 1.7 MHz Pentium M processor and 1GB of ram on the Toshiba. (So far I haven't seen the Duo demand more than 1GB of RAM though things could change with Vista.) Everything happens a little faster or a lot faster. Part of that may be the fresh install of XP. Boot and shutdown time are dramatically shorter compared to my choked up Toshiba. Jobs like compressing and decompressing mp3's seem twice as fast. I have some big 3D files to render. The Latitude is doing an adequate job, the old Toshiba was altogether too slow.

I like the looks of the Latitude a tiny bit more than the Inspiron because I'm a boring guy but either one would have been fine.

It's a shame the empty battery bay can't be used for a second hard drive. I have a spare hard drive and that would have satisfied my desire for more onboard storage.

I haven't tested battery life. I got got the 9 cell battery but I only use the battery to go between AC outlets. If this battery has enough hours in it I might rely on battery more often. I avoided a second battery because of weight and cost to replace two batteries down the road.

    Again, satisfied customer.

    Charlie

Just got a new M1210 from the Dell Outlet.

    Core Duo 1.6GHz
    1GB DDR2 667MHz RAM
    60GB 5400RPM HDD
    GeForce Go 7400 Video
    CD-RW/DVD-ROM

$850. I was gonna buy a slightly higher-end config... but for half price, I don't mind a minor step down in CPU!!

Benchmarks, with both cores enabled and the video card overclocked to 503MHz/1.03GHz:

    3DMark05: 2249
    3DMark06: 921

Quite respectable for the little pipsqueak.

Hi all - I really appreciate this board as I think it will be an invaluable resource when I get my new E1505. I'm replacing a Presario that just got stolen :( Thanks to you guys, I ordered through Dell instead of getting the flavor of the week at Circuit City. With 30% off Inspirons and the EPP discount, I got this for $1100:

    Core 2 Duo T5500 1.66GHz/667MHz
    15.4 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WXGA+ Display with TrueLife™
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 DIMM
    256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory™
    80GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive
    8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
    Integrated Audio
    Dell Wireless 1390b/g (54Mbps)
3Yr Ltd Warranty and At-Home Service

It's still in pre-production and I'm already having a little buyer's regret. I plan to do some video work - should I have upgraded to the T7200 2GHz/4 MB cache processor? If so, can I call Dell and upgrade my order? I'd imagine they wouldn't mind a little more money.

The T7200 will have a 4MB cache, and that definitely will help in doing video work.

Newbie here, waiting on a Latitude D420 from the outlet for right at $1000. Ordered Sat night, expecting delivery on Thursday! Got my tracking online after chatting with a cust serv rep. Going through this list, it looks as though I may have ended up with an extra 512 of Ram...the unit I ordered only listed 1 Gb??? Also, has anybody seen the "Dell Hardware Warranty Plus Return to Depot, Inital Year" charge of 109.00 before? It wasn't tacked on after the order as the total price stayed the same from outlet inventory list through checkout.

    Just arrived.

    E1505
    Core2Duo 2GHz T72000
    2GB ram
    160GB Hard drive
    X1400 256 video (128MB dedicated, 128MB shared)

    Intel Wireless, Bluetooth
    3 year warranty

    $1246 with 30% off coupon.

I'm working on what I hope will be a sweet review comparing this laptop to my desktop dualcore Athlon64 X2 3800+ (2GHz).

For now, I will give you my 1 hour review. :)

    1. I would say that I am happier with the laptop in real life, compared to the vision I had in my mind's eye. ie, first impressions are better than expected. It's a LOT lighter than my last 15.4" Dell Inspirion 5150. The white bumpers are, meh, but, overall it's not a bad looking laptop. The keyboard is much better than I thought it would be. Quality seems good, touch and feel is good.

    2. The screen is an interesting mixed bag. One the one hand, the vertical viewing angle seems kinda fussy. Nothing close to a show stopper, but, tilting the screen back and forth will be required to ensure that you're getting a good viewing angle. On the other hand, wow. I was not sure I was going to like the TrueLife thing. It's shiny, but, in a room, it's fine. The colors are SWEET. Really makes the LCD seem deeply saturated like good CRTs used to be. Overall, the screen is really nice.

2a. If you were worried about getting the WSXGA+ since it would be hard on the eyes. Don't worry. It came configured at 120dpi, and the desktop icon text was set to 12pt. All the fonts and lettering were huge. I had to spend a few minutes tweaking down the screen to 96dpi, and setting the icon fonts to 10pt and so forth. Out of the box, the WXSGA+ will not be hard on the eyes, all the fonts were large. I like them small, so, that's what I went for.

    3. Dell sent me a Windows XP Media Center DVD! Hooray! And it's a good thing. I found the level of "bloatware" to be instantly unacceptable. I had a trial of Office 2003 on there, it's running some sort of SQL Server, AOL this, Earthlink that, trial of McAfee that. Argh. It was yucky right away. I'm typing this on my desktop while the E1505 is undergoing it's first HD format and clean install. :)

    So far, I'm pretty happy.

So, far I'm impressed with my E1505. I had mediocre expectations, but so far, it's far exceeding them.

Got mine in yesterday as well.

    E1505
    Core 2 Duo T7200 (2 GHz, 4MB Cache, 667MHz FSB)
    1 GB RAM (2x512, I'll upgrade to 2 GB if/when I need it)
80 gig 5400 RPM HD (already have a 160 external)
    X1400 Mobility
9 Cell Battery (I couldn't believe how good the battery life was when I used it yesterday)
    WSXGA Screen
Backpack (don't really remember which one, but it looks like a normal backpack but has a separate pocket for the notebook itself)

All this for $928, including tax and shipping!!! Awesome!

The only thing I have to get used to is the screen size. I went from a 19" 1440x900 screen to a 15.4" 1680x1050 screen. So, not only did I move to a smaller screen, but it has a much higher resolution. Text is outstandingly small, but I love the screen real estate. Very happy thus far.

How often does Dell do these great coupons. I went to go buy one today and it already expired. I would have gotten it already but I was having configuration trouble and was trying to go through thier online help and that quickly stalled out I have not even gotten a reply back from them anymore in 5 days

Congrats on your M1210 purchase. Is that LCD issue the same one I was hearing about before? Where the screen is touching the laptop and eventually causing the paint to scratch?

I only heard about the paint by the hinges scratching off, not sure about the physical screen part making contact with the keyboard/palm rest paint section.

Most of the lcd issues is the horrible image quality some users received with their m1210 systems, I hope dell sends me a peach.

hi there everyone, anyone out there have the mediadirect 2 installer or iso with them, can anyone pls post it so that people can get it here instead of ordering it from dell,it would really help a lot of people having this same problem of dell not providing the installation cd of media direct 2, i have an inspiron 6400 laptop, just bought it a couple of days ago but it does not have an os and mediadirect 2 the only thing it have is a cd for the drivers, which by the way does not have the md2 installer,so if anyone can really do me a favor here and let me download the md2 installer that would be a grate deal to many

    thanks guys

    cheers

I've had my E1505 for about a day now and spent last night doing the requisite reformat and clean install of XP Pro. It's nice to go from 65 processes to about 35. I can't see myself using MCE at all and I sometimes use the laptop for work. The Media interface thingy with My Videos, My Music, etc. was pretty sweet though.

It's a great machine. The white trim is a little overkill to me; looks like they were trying to add a little Apple styling. I don't have any good games to really test it out and haven't had time to do any benchmark stuff.

I have an LG LCD and it's very nice. The TrueLife doesn't bother me and I don't plan on using it outdoors much, maybe if I find myself at a coffeeshop on a nice day.

Speaking of the screen, I probably set a record for fastest buyer's remorse. After all my research, I felt great about my order, especially after the 30% off coupon. I guess I missed the threads where nearly everyone lauded WSXGA+ for a 15.4 screen. I ended up getting the WXGA+, which looks great and if I didn't know any better, I would be completely satisfied with.

However, I finally read some posts yesterday about WSXGA+ and I swiftly kicked myself for not spending the extra $50 bucks for the upgrade. I'll be doing some photo & video editing, nothing professional - just web and home movie stuff. The WXGA+ should handle it all fine and there's plenty of screen real estate to work with. I just think of what I could've had for a just a little more.

Man, I'm materialistic  - I need to just get over it and be thrilled with the great laptop I have! :)

    lol, yeah.

I have the WXSGA+ and the 1680x1050 is nice. I have the Samsung screen though. It's good, but a wee bit fussy on view angles.

The white bumpers are painted! Which is straight lame. I've also heard the silver will wear out around the palm rests.

Dell, please go back to all black plastic non-painted laptops.

Otherwise though, I'm happy, this is a very capable laptop with Core2Duo and 2GB ram and a 160GB hard drive.

    Hey,

After reading through this forum for a couple a weeks I decided to settle for a Dell E1405 esp. when the coupons came around.

I got the delivery today. Spec is:

    Dell Inspiron E1405

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB Cache/2.00GHz/667MHz FSB)
    2Gb Ram 577Mhz
    80Gb 7200RPM Harddisk
    Intel Pro Wireless card
    DVD Read/Writer

    Total cost was about $1068.

    My thoughts about the machine?

    The plus points...
+Size is exactly what I was looking for 14.1" is good for me
+Intel wireless card is very powerful
    +Errr....

    The minus points...
-Build quality is not the best in the world
-When I close the lid, it does not sit on the laptop, just hangs so can be pressed down still (.5") but is closed (make sense?)
-The screen is bright from the bottom, something I read about in the forum - and is really putting me off!
-Dell put soo much rubbish on it when it arrives that I can not tell the difference from any other machine, despite choosing much more RAM and fast processor (maybe its just Windows??)

In conclusion, I have not yet decided whether I am going to keep this or return it and go for the HP dv2000t with a lesser spec but better screen(!). Let me know your thoughts/advice please!

Until then....will update if anything significant happens...
