it's right... but if you wanna get all drivers, just take a look into your system and download from every devices site... or try torrents...

btw, my dell didn't work with iata78_enu.exe drive controller so I use iata76_enu.exe instead and works fine, no more BSOD (I'd got 4 BSOD running Vista and 3 times times just turned off itself!!!)

A 320GB 5400 rpm SATA Hard Drive will keep up and at times out perform a 170 or 200 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive.

The reason being a more dense, thus bigger HD moves much faster than the same read, write movements of a faster rpm drive that is half the capacity.

This is a physical fact. It is not disputable.

No doubt you being a Deity, will laugh, roll on the ground and turn green over this. :)

If this is confusing let's put it in another light.

You and I each have a bag of 10,000 jelly beans with 5 different colors.

-->I have one big desk in front of me that I can lay them all out on and easily reach without much movement of my arm.

-->You have the bag split up on top of five different desks that are a distance apart. But, you move very fast. In fact you move so much faster than me, that you are almost a blur if I look at you. You also heat up the atmosphere around you, like Flash!

-->However slow my arm moves, it doesn't have to move very far at all, and I can assemble the 5 different colors into their different piles seconds before you can.

A child could understand the dynamics that are discussed above. :p

    Fact: 320GB 5400 rpm drive is faster than a 170/200 7200 rpm.

Question: If you are a Deity and know everything, why did you buy small, hot, slower SATA drives?

We are all wondering what you're answer will be.

    Blessings,
    Chetanji

    snowbro and all,

Just succesfully upgraded my m1530 to XP. Thanks for all the research. It was really easy with a Dell OEM XP cd, dated 2007. Had the SATA drivers on it and SP2. If you can get your hands on one, I highly recommend it.

On a positive note, have you or anyone checked out "System Information" in the Nvidia Control Panel in XP? It reports the video memory to be 512Mb (256Mb Shared)! The largest Dell lists on their website is 256Mb. Maybe Vista reports 512Mb also. Can you verify?

Maybe another reason to upgrade to XP.

    Regards,

    Livius

I just completed a full install of XP on my new 1330. All the XP drivers are available for download on the dell site, just they're under other laptops now, that still support XP, like 1520, 6300, etc.

I'm also getting 256MB reported, when actually I have only 128. I've heard things like this happen to other people too. Nothing to worry about, everything works fine.

I have a 250GB 5400 RPM HDD and it feels very fast, especially compared to my old laptop's 60GB 5400 RPM. So I completely agree with Chetanji's theory.

I have to say though I wouldn't have gotten here, having to install a hacked XP instead of keeping the licensed Vista Home Premium, if the input devices (both keyboard and mouse) didn't lag so much, hurting my game experience horribly. I really like Vista! I would never go back to XP if it worked properly...
--> In Vista it's like my commands happen ,from time to time, 1-2 seconds after i do them, including mouse movement and clicks. I've installed all the newest drivers and patches there are! I have found no way to fix this. This doesn't happen in XP, so it's not hardware. The cursors in Vista and all programs moves naturally, but apparently the service that tracks it's position and actions lags though.

If anyone knows of a fix, please let me know [email protected]. I'll switch back to Vista in the blink of an eye. I couldn't care less about 5fps considering all the other improvements.

    Thanks!

no, it is rly only worth it if u 4 gb or higher of ram. it allows apps to run faster, but the downside is driver, and software as well hardware issues. at least till alot of people jump onto the 64bit band wagon.

the card has 256mb of ram on board but another 256 from system resources. but only regard the 256 because the other half doesn't do much.

been reading thread but dont really see anyone with my distinct problem....only exclamation points I have are SM Bus Controller and an unknown device under audio. audio doesn't work but i'm not too worried with that yet....When i try to install the chipset driver from dell, I get an error asking me to find the pci.sys file, something about the windows cabinet....any ideas why this won't update? and when i boot up, there are a few "fo9und new hardware" installs, one for a pnp monitor, and one for a HID compliant mouse....when i try to install then, it does the exact same thing as far as starts the installation, and then asks me to find a *.sys file that is supposed to be in windows/driver cache....any ideas i'm goin nuts over here.

If you're having those problems then you definitely aren't doing it properly.

To find the right drivers that won't give any errors and work perfectly under XP, you need to look at the drivers section of OTHER laptops of the same generation that incorporate the same devices.

For example I suggest trying Inspiron 1520 first, then if you're missing something see some others.

Dell M1330 XPS with xp, wireless network problem: connection tray stops responding:

    Hi,
I have installed XP on my dell xps m1330 and installed the drivers according to the thread below:
    http://www.dellcommunity.com/suppor...hread.id=253132&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

I have installed wireless network driver that is available in dell support site (for m1330 xps:xp):
    R164255.EXE: Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN-driver : http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R164255.EXE

Everything works properly except for the wireless network. I can use the wireless network, It does not give an error. But if the signal strength is not excellent (it is normal), after sometime the driver stops responding and I can not use the internet anymore(with other notebooks it reconnects from time to time). The details of the problem are:

1-even if it I turn wireless button off and on again, the problem persist. When I turn off internet, it does not update the wireless network icon on the task bar to indicate that wireless is off. It shows an icon indicating that internet is connected (while internet is not connected)
2-when I try to standby my notebook; it gives an error that the driver for wireless network Is not responding so it cannot standby.
3-the only way to solve the problem is to restart the notebook. When I do that, it says connection tray is not responding and I have to end the task to proceed with restart
4-the wireless network is my university wireless network. Other notebooks when they are connected to the network, after sometime disconnect and reconnect to internet; but mine stops responding instead :-(.

Please help me to solve this problem. If there is any ambiguity in my writing please let me know, I have great trouble with this thing and I really need to get it to work!
    With thanks
    Kian
(PS: I know I should ask it in the tread I referred to, but every time it deletes my message and I don’t know why.)

Hello, sorry for reposting, but i've searched and searched, installed many different drivers (including UAA) and the problems are still there:

*Sounds hangs during boot (windows startup sound stutters, after boot everything works fine). I habe the sigmatel audio.

*Bluetooth is installed and works perfect, only when i disable it with the software (tray icon) and I restart the laptop, the blue light of bluetooth is turned on, while the software tells me that it is disabled???

In vista 32/64 bits I have none of the above metioned problems...

I just use the nvidia driver for the Vostro 1500. Just go to the Dell driver download webside and choose XP drivers for the Vostro 1500. It's the same card, and it work's perfectly on the XPS M1530!

@Hasteveha: I suggest you to simply install XP SP2, then install SP3 and make a disk image with acronis true image. Then the XP reinstallation would be about 10 minutes!, then burn an bootable rescue disk from acronis true image 11. Boot with that, backup the XP partition, and it will compress it very well.

For example, my XP partition with all drivers and SP3 installed, was about 4.4GB, and acronis compressed it to amazing 1.46GB!!!

And yes, XP runs PERFECTLY on my M1330.

    Repped, thanks!

Please just update your Windows XP - this sounds like the old Intel cpu/core(/2)duo powersaving bug, also affects battery life and most likely your usb-devices too.. Microsoft released a (buggy)patch in 2006 I seem to recall - it's solved in later releases ;)

I've done the XP reinstall from a XP SP2 OS disk (switched to ATA in the BIOS set-up instead of using the Lastxp route), and updated all the drivers (as far as I know) to the point where everything seems to be working great...

My question is (...and I know this question was asked previously, but I never found an answer for it...): how do I know if I have the SATA drivers installed on my system? I am under the impression that I need to install the SATA drivers to boost the performance of my system, but I have no idea if that's correct (kinda a newbie at this).

    Please help :)

    Hi,

I got new M1330 Laptop and installed Windows XP with SP3 slipstreamed.

Installed ALL drivers and all good except for Audio.

There is an ! by one of the audio devices in the control panel.

The audio worked great on my last install of XP with SP2 - just in this fresh install of XP SP3 it is not working. I am dying over here. Please advise how to fix the issue. I would definitely opt for not doing a fresh rebuild with SP2.

    Thanks

Here is more to my story:

I do have the Dell XPS M1330 driver dell had posted at the beginning of the year for XP. It is R171789.

Here is my short story: I installed XP SP2 and all the drivers worked with no problems including the audio driver - I had to do nothing weird or special - ran the driver and it worked great.

Then I downloaded RC3 of XP SP3. Installed a fresh install of XP with SP3 - all drivers worked great but the audio driver had a problem. The ONLY thing different was I installed SP3. I did not want the hassle so I reloaded and stuck with SP2.

When SP3 was released as a final I really wanted to run it for the security updates. So I did a slipstream CD of XP SP3 - installed from scratch again and again all the drivers work great except the audio.

I never had the issue of the install hanging part way through so I am sure that is not the issue.

If you have any ideas please let me know.

    Thanks

I had installed xp sp2 on my m1330 early in the year and then updated (almost said upgraded) to sp3. Audio and everything else work fine.

You may have already tried this but the following had worked for me on another Dell model laptop where I had a similar problem as yours after installing a slip streamed sp3. I fixed it by downloading an extracting the drivers, uninstalling the previous ones and re-installing the drivers.

Many thanks to snowbro and the other contributors here for the great info!! After following the steps in the first note I have fully-working XP on my 1330 and the hardest part about removing Vista was getting the sticker off of my keyboard which required Goof-off solvent, a single-edged razor blade and needlenose pliers!

I followed the path of using nLite to add the SATA drivers to an XP kit. It didn't work at first, but I was trying to use an old pre-SP2 kit. With a newer SP3 XP install it was smooth sailing.

But... for the love of god, after following this procedure, do not press the MediaDirect button, or you may need the Dell MediaDirect Repair Utility:

    Dell MediaCenter Repair Utility

    **********************************************************

Any idea on how to solve this?

I just recently purchased the m1330, it will be shipping soon. I was wondering if all these drivers would work with the version that comes now? I noticed a few differences such as the wireless driver being a lower number (1390 compared to 1395), would it still work?

Also, would the best way for me to install be to switch the drive to ATA, install xp, install the SATA driver, switch back to SATA, then finish installing the other drivers?

    Ok, it's official..
Bluetooth's not working on my system after I installed XP...

I tried installing the drivers that's posted on the first post, but it gives me 'Bluetooth device not found. Press Fn+F2 or switch On/Off key to activate'.

I've activated the side switch that controls the wireless. It also shows symbols of WiFi and BT onscreen. But the BT light doesn't light up on the panel near the speakers.

I've installed the Intel drivers for wireless because I've got the Intel 4965 AGN Wireless Mini-card.

On the dell config page it says "DELL Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module".

    Can someone please help??

    Thanks, snowbro!

With the help of your guide and this other guide and this other guide, I was able to install XP Pro SP3 on my new M1330 smoothly (no single ! in my Device Manager).

I'm installing MS Office 2003, Photoshop CS3, Kaspersky AV, and other apps in it right now... I'll post a video of it in action by the end of this week.

    Thanks again!

    My QuickSet doesn't install. It tells me;

I have treid several different versions, including the one posted on the first post of this thread! Any idea? Could it be because I installed Windows XP Pro SP3?

I'm having a small problem with the microphone.
I have to install the Sigmatel drivers each time I want to use the mic.. Otherwise it doesn't work..

Audio works fine, no probs.. What can I do??

Well, since I have same problem, i was looking for a solution. And the only one I could find is using an 3rd party application for controlling audio. I've been using it for 2 weeks now, and so far my mic is working and I didn't have to reinstall the drivers. You can try it if you wish, it is a free program. Here is the link:

As of wifi, I wnder if an updated version of the driver could solve the problem. I am sure I could get the most up to date version at Intel's web site (since I have intel's wi-fi card), but they wouldn't install to my machine since I requires drivers only from dell. So, I am looking for a way getting around Window's validation of driver manufacturer during the install.

I'm using the Wireless Pro from Intel and having no probs.. This could be your solution..

Still looking for a non-3rd party solution to the mic thing.. :D

Well, I still got my wi-fi hanging after installing Wireless Pro :( So that is snot solution for it...

Concerning Audio, I decided to try an older audio driver which I found on dell's website as well. The only problem with it is that you have to uninstall your current driver then install that drive, reboot, and after reboot you have to manually go to device manager right-click on the audio device and chose the update driver option.
I did that to my notebook, and so so good. I've been running it with this older audio driver for a day or so. Gotta wait more to make sure that the problem is gone.
