Thanks very much for the link BlackRussian!

I have XP working perfectly on my m1330, apart from the NVIDIA issue. Those drivers I will try tonight, if they fix the suspend issues (which I currently workaround by totally disabling suspend and just using Hibernate) I'll be very happy.

    Thanks for the link.

I install Windows XP (Spanish). Everything works great, even audio, but I have one device I can't install... It translate something like "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus", though I installed Microsoft Patch and have "Sigmatel High Definition Audio CODEC" installed correctly.
    Any Ideas?

Another problem is when I chat using the mic, it doesn't filter the audio coming out of the speakers and get and endless loop, until I mute the mic.

    I'd really appreciate any help.

P.S.: I have Dell's Windows Vista and XP Pro in Spanish. Could anyone be so kind to tell me where to get an XP Pro in English? or uploaded it in an ftp or something like that.

I've got my system running on XP with all devices (as far as I know) installed, but I get Windows File Protection dialogs every so often - anyone else run into this? The only strange input on my side were the nlite AHCI XP install and the Nvidia hacked driver - anyone know what's responsible?

Also does anyone know the definite differences between the AHCI install and the ATA install enabling AHCI afterwards?

    i need some help.

i tried dualbooting xp/vista. it worked perfectly before. then i had to reformat cuz something in vista happened that basically didnt allow me to use any programs installed after vista.

so i tried recreating the dual boot. i get xp working perfectly, but when i tried to install dual bootloader via vistabootpro, the screen resolution is too big to be able to do anything in v.b.p. so i install the x3100 driver, but once i do that, and install the necessary bootloader, upon reboot, it says xp is corrupted, leaving me with just vista. help?

    Just FYI.

I tried SO many different drivers, but they all gave me suspends problems.
    Until I installed this driver.

Make sure you run the setup from the DELL folder. This is an OFFICAL 8400M GS supported driver so you do not need to install the patched inf. In fact, DON'T install it, that seems to cause problems with suspend.

I'm 100% happy with my laptop running XP now, finally I have a stable NVIDIA driver that properly supports suspend.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi

Great thread, just what I needed. We have just purchaeed 2 pcs. XPS 1330's, but need to get rid of Vista.

I've been trying to boot from the XP Pro CD-ROM, but keep running into the same issue. Installation program begins to load (blue screen where drivers and stuff are loaded), but suddenly it stops with a critical error (STOP:0x00000007E........pci.sys - adress F748E0Bf....)

I've called Dell support, but they just cliamed it was a faulty XP CD-ROM. So I tried 3 different CD's, and they all had the same problem.

Do you have any advise of how I get 1330 booted so I can delete the partitions?

    Carsten

This might just be luck of the draw, but following kent1146's instructions on getting AHCI working, I got XP booting up under AHCI just fine and was squealing for joy (boot times on my drive were noticeably quicker).

Alas, in performing some large file transfers as tests (150GB transfer of media files) I consistently was getting page fault errors (google Event ID 51). Tried disabling disk write cache to no avail. Thought perhaps it was bad memory, but after numerous memtest runs, I've ruled that out as well.

Performed a fresh install of XP again onto my Samsung 250GB drive (25/225 GB partitions) and am performing the disk transfer testing again and so far all is well.

It seems others have had better luck than I, but for now I'm running sans AHCI until there's another update or further success stories with it.

Laptopvideo2go.com is the only web site I can find that has this driver, but they're currently down and don't look like they're coming back soon. Does anyone have a different site or a copy of the file?

    Thanks.

You need to have SATA drivers slipstreamed into the XP Pro CD OR turn off AHCI and run it in ATA mode via BIOS.

I installed everything according to the guide and my M1330 with XP works fine.

When I turn on the Wifi/Bluetooth switch though, I get an "unknown device" under keyoboards. It prompts me to install drivers and when I click next it says "HID keyboard device". What's this??

If I turn off the wifi switch it dissapears.

    Edit:
Seemed like some things were not installed by the bluetooth driver.. after updating the drivers again they dissappeared

Quickset INstalls easily with DOS - Silent mode (setup.exe -s)
I just used the 1330 drivers for the 1530, everything worked except the dell touch drivers, they locked up windows when it was right before the login screen.

I got Curious as to why i could not install quckset on my 1530, i think some peeps on the 1330 has problems as well. So i went searching, and read this in the Readme.txt File.

I just used the Latitude D830 R165094.EXE that someone mentioned however i am sure it would work with the m1330 driver.

    m1330 driver http://ftp.us.dell.com/app/R163012.EXE

Basically this will skip all checks windows version does & install it anyways behind everything.

    For Advanced Users Only:
    ------------------------

    Silent Install Option

QuickSet is installed via an InstallShield installation program and thus has the ability to be "silently" installed through the "-S" command-line switch. QuickSet includes an .ISS file in the distribution package for customers who wish to perform silent installs. Example: "SETUP.EXE -S".

    Custom Installation

QuickSet can be installed with a subset of features by choosing the "Custom" Setup type and then selecting only those features you require. For silent installation, a custom .ISS can be generated by using the "-R" command-line switch. This option will launch Setup, allow you to choose your preferred installation options, and will store your selections in a new SETUP.ISS, created inside the system's Windows folder. You may then replace the SETUP.ISS file included with the distribution package with the new customized version and use it to repeat that installation on other machines. Example: "SETUP.EXE -R".

hi. I am a bit of a beginner and want to get my machine working on XP. I have been reluctant to use unsupported drivers, but have seen that Dell have now put some XP and XP64 bit drivers on their XPS1330 support page at:

    http://support.euro.dell.com/suppor...ystemID=XPS_M1330&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid=

I am not sure if this is all that are required. Can anyone help
My question is how do i get these drivers onto an XPPro install disk or can i load them onto a USB stick?

    regards,
    Zonker.

    I've got this partially done.

I installed XP using the SATA drivers slipstreamed into a XP cd - so I did not have to deactivate the AHCI setting in the Bios.

I fought with the video drivers until I saw on the dellcommunity board that someone else had the integrated Intel video chipset - not the nVidia one. Using that driver solved my video issues.

So now I am left with these issues that I cannot figure out.

    * Bluetooth - the program installed, but it *immeadiately* tells me it can't find any devices (despite this bluetooth mouse that came with the m1330).

    * Sound - still no sound. I have tried the Sigma driver pointed to before and it fails everytime. Maybe I have a different integrated sound card too?

    * misc yellow flagged items in Device Manager:
** under System Devices, there is an unknown "PCI Device"
** under Universal Serial Bus controllers, there are 7 "USB Root Hub" flagged

    - - -
    Update:
On a whim, I decided to delete all of the flagged items in Device Manager and let Windows "rediscover" them. This actually worked MUCH better than I could have hoped.

    * All of the USB Root Hubs as well as the PCI Device were discovered.

    * One of the devices that was discovered was the Bluetooth "network controller" ? At any rate, it installed and now it is discovering and using BT devices correctly.

    * Two of the devices turned out to be the Microsoft High-Definition stuff, which was automagically dl'd and installed from MS's site. This made 2 new items appear as "yellow flagged", but this time as Audio devices.

I now ran the Sigma driver pointed to above, and it installed perfectly.

    Well... mostly.
I DO now have sound, but only 1 of the flagged "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" was removed. As I said, sound works now - so this remaining flagged item is more of just a nuicance than a real problem.

I've read the messages above, but I don't think I came across this. Did anyone have to flash the bios for the XP install?

    --

I got my m1330 2 days ago and w/i the last 24 hours I have gotten the BSOD twice! .. while not even using the machine. And I can't connect to my wireless network either (linksys wrt54g) - I get "limited connectivity". All under Vista of course.

Now I am on the phone with Dell -- this started 5 hours ago!!! I spent $2600 for this?? The tech now is downloading and installing every single driver from the dell site ... it's taking forever.

I am going to give XP a try with this machine, but if not, back it goes and hello again Thinkpad. Unbelievably frustrating. (nice screen .. too bad crapy OS software)

    ----------

I am sending it back today.

2 BSODs w/i a 24 hour period for a system fresh out of the box (w/o any hardware addition or complext software added/running) is not good.

Nor is the inability to connect to my wiresless network.

The dell tech was futzing around with my wireless router settings and said that I had to change my 128 bit encryption to 64 since Dell did not (!!) support 128 encryption -- sounds like BS to me (but even worse if it was true).

Oh, re Vista he told me that Vista wasn't ready for prime time, and that many of the drivers were causing crashes etc, but it was the same for everyone. My response? Sounds like saying "everyone else is beating their kids" - that doesn't make this right. What a disappointment.

    --
So I am looking for a machine that's got XP installed, dual core, and <= 5lbs. Reliable. (Maybe Thinkpad - I've had two in the past and overall been happy with them).

Any other suggestions? I really wanted the m1330 to work out, but I need a machine I can *use*, not try to fix so that I can use it.

Well, I got my m1330 two days ago. Out of the box, no wireless. Wrtg4gs. I had to reset the router in order to have vista wireless find signal and connect. I was getting "local access" only. I lost my mind and reverted back to xp pro sp2. Everything is now working. All drivers fine, no yellow exclamations in device manager :) I did have to make the bios setting change to ata. At first I did try the usb floppy option, it seemed fine, but then after windows got to the end of the install, it asked to put the floppy back in, but it was. It would not recognize it so only option was to F3 to quit the install. Very happy on this end. All the drivers are out there so if you want to roll back to xp. It works just fine.

    Hi.
sure you have a sony 4925 DVD drive? The UK Dell site now has XP drivers and the internal drive is listed as: - this is the one in my device manager too....

Removable Storage: HLDS GSA-S10N DVDRW 8X ultraslim IDE slot load, Firmware, Multi OS, Multi Language, XPS M1330, v.A101, A01XP

are you in USA and is it a different DVD drive they supply there? if so try driver support on dell.com

Sorry to beat a dead horse but....

I would really like to COMPLETELY WIPE OFF the Mediadirect partitions, software, etc. Why do you ask ? Well, I have had to reinstall XP TWICE because I inadvertently hit the media direct button on the laptop. Please, tell me how to make it so pressing this button does absolutely NOTHING when I am booting it OR when in XP. How do I get rid of the HPA partitions ?

    Hi Guys,
I have got a new xps 1330 and i am very much interested to install xp pro instead of vista.
I have followed this thread for quite a bit, but have few questions,
    1. what do you do with the SATA driver (i think it is now available at dell's website for xp right). Should i have to driver in a usb when installing xp? should i change my hard drive from sata to ata
    2. If i want media direct, should i install the media direct dvd before installing the OS?
    3. Any recent success stories of complete installation of xp with all the devices working on 1330?

    1. Either you use nLite and add the SATA drivers to your XP installation CD (easier than it sounds. install nlite, its selfexplaining) or you could set the drive to ATA mode in BIOS, install XP and then install the SATA driver afterwards. ive done both and they work just as good. Theres a lot of info on how to do this on the forum. (you could use a floppy drive but who owns onw of them these days?)

If you decide to install the SATA drivers after you have installed XP, read this thread:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/archive/index.php/t-164159.html
(the sata drivers from dells webiste will do just fine too, although the ones available at intels website are newer)

    2. Yes (its not much to have though. use those 2GB for something useful)

    3. Dell have all the necessary drivers on their website now. There isnt really much to it. Download all of them and install them. I use XP on my M1330 and its working beautifully with all devices detected. The only "difficulty" is the ATA/SATA thing.

I had quite some problems getting the sound card drivers to work. If you get a message saying "Not compatible with this OS" do like this:
    1. Download and install the latest soundcard driver from dells website. (it only installs halfway..)
    2. Reboot XP
    3. The soundcard driver will start automatically (i believe it did) and finish off the installation. The trick is to do the following:
As soon as the driver installation starts up, go to the device manager and remove the sound card device. Then continue with the installation. (its hard to tell which one is the sound card so make sure to install all other devices first and the only one left should be the sound card..)

This will install the driver completely with all its drivers. At first I just unpacked the dell sound card drivers and in the device manager i chose "update driver" for the sound device and selected the directory that hold the drivers.. this will work fine, BUT this wont install all the extra stuff that comes with the driver, like amplifying the microphone to get decent input. So id recommend restarting XP and doing it the way I explained above

hi. haven't tried in Xp yet, but in Vista both wifi and bluetooth turn on with the harware switch bottom right corner of the machine. doesnt seem to be any way to turn them on/off independently which must waste some battery life...

You can disable them as needed..
If you dont want Bluetooth running once the switch has been turned on right click the bluetooth icon in task bar and Turn off Bluetooth Radio. ;)

    hi all,
thanks for your reply. I am going to install xp into my xps 1330 today!!! going to be a long nite i guess, I have downloaded all my drivers into a USB stick!

just a quick refresh of the steps (in layman terms-read my terms)
    1. slipstream xp SATA driver for xps 1330 into my winxp OS cd (if the CD given is just CD-R will we still be able to do that!!!?)
    2. install media direct and will create a partition of about 60gb for the c-drive
    3. install xp as usual
    4. install all the drivers

i reckon i should keep the bluetooth switch on when i am shutting down with the vista...right...
    guys anyother fine details?

will let you know guys how it goes!!!

    Hello guys.
I perfectly installed xp in my xps 1330....everything working....i was even surprised. All you need is the nlite program to slipstream the sata drivers for xp into winxp OS and install normally.
    For sound,
I installed all the drivers except the sound and followed the method by daniel.....(thanks!!) bang./....it works like a beauty!!!....
here is what i did, after installing all the drivers, i unpacked the .exe file for the sound device. As daniel said it did not finish completely and went off...dont panic...just reboot the system, the driver automatically tries to install. Before you click next, make sure you go to the device manager and delete all which has a yellow ! mark. now click next and bang its working. !!!

Glad to hear you got it to work ;) And thanks for simplifying what I wrote. I was in a hurry and didn't explain how to do it very well.

These are some issues that are still keeping me from a 100% migration to XP:

    1. Audio works fine, but the latest XP Sigmatel drivers from Dell don't seem to have the ability to switch to HDMI audio.
    2. Sleep & Hibernate modes STOP working after switching to Intel SATA drivers.
    3. Fingerprint reader keeps getting "bad quality error" during fingerprint registration. IE, not able to register a fingerprint.
    4. Webcam drivers installed fine from Dell's site, but where has the webcam app gone?

Everything else is working great! Is anyone else able to get these issues to work? If so, then I'm going to keep fiddling with XP, otherwise, I might have to go back to Vista.

Are you able to get HDMI audio to work with this method?

My audio works fine, except HDMI audio.

How do we install the advanced audio? I paid extra for that, it was working fine on Vista, but now I have installed XP and audio works fine - but I want "Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD Audio Software"

Someone please help. I have tried installing the drivers from Dell for other models, and also the driver from the Creative website, but it doesnt seem to work.

    1. Do you follow the exact same steps with regards to installing XP Pro on an XPS1530?

    2. Are there other drivers that are used/needed?

    3. Can I use nLite to update any Windows XP CD, or does it have to be a burned version that I have made?

    4. Is it easier just to turn on ATA mode and install the drivers after XP installs then turn on SATA mode?

    5. Is Media Direct worth saving? What is it for? I would like to clear the whole thing and have one partition (maybe two, if I want Vista on one of them).

I have a lot of programs that will not run on Vista, so it is critical that I can install XP without too many issues.

I managed to install Windows XP + all the drivers including bluetooth. However I have a Samsung A737 and when I try to send a file, it fails.

It manages to pair successfully and even sees the folder structure from within My Bluetooth places, but when I try to explore a folder it says "error establishing connection"

Did anyone here successfully transfer files between a cell phone and a m1330 w/ windows xp yet?

yes, I did it with M1330 and Sony Ericsson S710a on WinXP. Check the driver again. Last time, I have the same problem until I remove the device under device manager and reinstall the driver again.

    1. If your hardware is the same, yes.

    2. See #1

    3. See #4

    4. It's easier to just set your BIOS to ATA mode, then switch to SATA. Although, I'm going to run some tests to see if SATA is *really* worth it. It seems after I installed the SATA drivers as OP instructed, it messes up your SLEEP & HIBERNATE modes. Also, sometimes, XP can't start the Nvidia card after reboot.

    5. Get rid of Media Direct, it's really pointless once we can get XP working properly FOR REAL and can have sleep mode. MD is only useful because it boots faster than XP, so you can get to your stuff quicker...but, resuming from SLEEP mode is even faster than MD. Also, have 2 partitions, one for OS and one for your user data.

EDIT: Actually, after looking at SLEEP & HIBERNATE errors more closely, I think it may be caused by Quickset.

    http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R174191&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=236863

I can get HIBERNATE & SLEEP to work consistently now. Just use the Quickset version above and do a custom install. DO NOT INSTALL the power management feature. That's it.

I have successfully transferred files from my BT Sprint HTC Touch. From what I remember, Sammy's BT implementation always kinda sucked.

Anyone able to get the fingerprint reader to work? That's the only thing I'm missing to get this thing fully functional under XP.
