Hi Snowman. How do you update your XP SP2 to the version w/ the SATA drivers? How can I tell if the SP2 on my XP already has it? I tried to install the Nvidia driver and keeps getting a message saying that the hardware device is not found or recognized, I presume this is because my SP2 doesn't have the SATA driver?

    Thanks for your help.

The nVidia driver has nothing to do with the SATA driver...

To get the laptopvideo2go drivers, please READ THE INSTRUCTIONS on their website.... You have to extract the driver file, THEN copy over the modded .inf file, THEN you can run setup... If you don't do this, you will get a hardware device not recognized error...

You can always go into the BIOS and let your computer run in ATA mode during install of Windows and install the SATA drivers later...

Snowbro, thanks for all the info, I got the Nvidia drivers to work and now I'm almost home free. 3 more issues remain and I hoping you have answers for me.

1st, I have downloaded and extracted the SATA driver R154200.exe. But since there isn't a installation file, how do I install it? Right now, there aren't any devices with exclamation marks, so I'm not sure which device I need to update the driver for this SATA driver. Current under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" in my Device Manager, there are 2 drive related devices already showing: "Intel ICH8M 3 port Serial ATA Storage Controller - 2828" and "Intel ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2850". Are these the same as the SATA driver you're talking about?

2nd, also in the Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus controllers, I have 7 items called "USB Root Hub" with exclamation marks next to them. And right now when I plug in anything USB device like a printer or as simple as a mouse, the laptop doesn't detect it. Where do I get the driver for the "USB Root Hub" and fix this problem?

3rd, I downloaded the "Bluetooth" driver from the link you provided in your initial posting. When I tried to run the executable at the root folder, a small prompt labeled "Bluetooth Software" comes up and asks to "Activate Bluetooth using Fn+F2 or Radio On/Off switch, and has a Cancel button. I've tried both Fn+F2 and the switch on the side, nothing happens, and I'll just need to click Cancel. I then tried to install from the /win32 directory and ran "setup.exe", nothing happens. In the same directory, I ran "Inst.exe" and this installed the software, but now it's telling me that there aren't any Bluetooth devices found, and again, Fn+F2 or the switch does nothing. Is this a hardware problem, or do I need to update some other driver somewhere else first?

I thank you in advance for your kind assistance.

    George

Well, looks like you've already got your SATA driver installed... try running HD Tune and see how your harddrive speeds are doing... You could always follow the simple instructions in the R154200.exe extracted directory and install the SATA drivers again... (pretty straightforward)

USB device hub should have been automatically detected... very odd... it did it on mine...

Are you sure you have bluetooth in your machine? Also, make sure its activated... make sure the button for the wifi is in the on position, this button also controls bluetooth... it's located in the lower right portion of your laptop near the Windows Vista sticker...

    Hope this helps...

BTW, its much easier to have a version of Windows XP thats pre-setup with all the updates rolled up and SATA drivers included...

Ok this has probably been asked, and I apologise, I just lack the power left to keep my eyes open and read all the posts!

I have a genuine windows XP Pro service pack 2 cd, is this OK to use instead of LastXP and does it have the SATA drivers on it?

Okay, I reformatted, installed it, got all the drivers installed, everything's good. Except one thing. Sleep/resume is totally screwed up. When I close the lid, it goes to sleep okay, but then it doesn't resume. When I open the lid again, press Enter, Esc, Ctrl + Alt + Delete, anything, it doesn't resume. I can disable sleep, but then what, do I just leave it on full power when I have the lid closed?

Yeah, this is a problem with XP and nVidia drivers... (there is another good thread on this RESUME and SLEEP issue...)

This same problem occurs in Vista using nVidia drivers.... Apparently only the stock nVidia drivers from Dell work with RESUME and SLEEP.

Nothing much you can do about it, however I have my laptop set to Hibernate on lid-close...

I did use Dell's nVidia drivers. I didn't use the modded .inf stuff. So I dunno why it'd be doing that...

    Hi all,

Thanks for all the useful info so far. I have a problem that I don't think has been posted before. Took delivery of an M1330 today but when trying to install Windows XP with HDD's set in ATA mode I get a BSOD just after the 'Starting Windows Setup' text. The error is with the pci.sys file. I have also tried putting the SATA drivers on at install but that didn't help either. I haven't managed to try with LastXP yet but do you have any ideas?

    Thanks...

Ok, I just registered so I can make this post!!!

    Thanks for this thread!!!

Snowbro your walk through is great.

I had to search around for SATA fix, but Kent1146's post #80 worked great.

I just wanted to say thanks!

Now I can use my new M1330 with Solidworks!

Just out of curiosity, what's the problem with leaving the system in ATA mode as opposed to ACHI?

    Hi Snowbro,

Thanks for you great guide. But could you say a little more about burning the recovery partition into a DVD? How do I do it and how do I restore the machine with this DVD in case anything goes wrong?

    Thanks,
    George

    Cool thread guys.

I'm wondering though... is XP any faster than Vista in a more real-world sense? Anybody got some benchmarking differences? I would probably only switch down to XP if it offered some sort of better gaming performance or a HUGE desktop-performance boost.

How many partitions do you have? I know that I cannot have any more than 4 partitions at a time, or it gives me an error

Yes, I have tried it. Hooked up to my LCD TV, played a DVD, not the greatest picture, but the sound came out of the TV automatically.

Ok, I just tried to expand one of my partitions (I only have 3 now) but you apparently cannot do it through Windows Disk Management. You are going to need to get a partitioning program like Partition Magic 8 or something like that. I'm not sure about any free ones that are out there

NO! Reformatting by definition gets rid of your data. If you say "Delete Partition", you will LOSE all your data on that partition. There is no way, in Windows Disk Management, to do like you want to, "reformat, but not have to delete my files." You need to get some partitioning program that can simply resize partitions without deleting your data.

Try a search for "partition managers" or something on someplace like www.download.com. There may very well be some free programs, or at least some programs that allow you to do a "trial version" and you can make your changes, then uninstall the program.

I just realized something... in XP, Windows Disk Management does not allow you to change partition sizes (I was in XP during the writing of my previous messages). However, in Vista, you can delete a partition (which deletes your files on that partition), then you can use the "Extend Volume" to take in all that free space you just created. This only works if you have free space--not if the that space is tied up in a different partition.

You can also say "Shrink Volume" which should allow you to create some free space from one of your bigger partitions, say your Vista partition. Then, you can use "Expand Volume" on your XP partition to take in that free space you just created. I have not tried this, but it should work.

    Nevermind. Wi-fi catcher works.

Does anyone know how to turn OFF bluetooth? On Vista, you simply right click and turn it off. Now, I don't have this option on XP. When I right click, there is only one option and that is "start using bluetooth". Then it proceeds to install a bunch of Bluetooth related drivers WTH.

I'm sorry, but couldn't help but chuckle a bit when seeing that title, like it's some big revelation or something.
Of course it's possible to install ANY OS on a computer if you have the drivers.
Unfortunately we're just at the mercy of the manufacturer's to decide if they wish to write drivers for any given OS or not. Hell, I could install Windows 2000 on my E1705 if I wanted to, there's drivers for it. :)

If you don't have a 1330, you don't realize why it's a big deal, so STFU and go do whatever you want with your E1705.

I gather the fingerprint issue is unresolved, the "won't hibernate" issue is unresolved and no one has testimonials on XP64?

hi, i have a problem. after installing xp (thanks to nlite) i was quite surprised to see that my bluetooth mouse and keyboard were working already, without any kind of installation (neither logitech drivers nor bluetooth drivers).

so, following the advice on the first post, i installed the chipset drivers.

right after that both the bluetooth mouse and keyboard stopped working, but the most worrying thing is that usb ports have stopped working too.

so i installed every XP official dell driver and still havent been able to make usb ports to work.

also, i downloaded the bluetooth driver that was advised on the first post, and it doesnt install. it asks me to turn the bluetooth on, but it is already on. i tried turning it off and on again, and even starting the installation with the bluetooth turned off, and then, when promted, turn it on. but it doesnt seem to recognise it, because the installation doesnt goes on.

what is more strange is that dell quick set indeed does recognize the bluetooth state changes, but the installation program does not.

so, after many hours, it seems everything but usb ports and bluetooth is working fine.

can anybody help with those 2 issues?

    thanks a lot

ps: i saw the bt fix on page 10, but it doesnt work for me. even after installing that file the installing program keeps asking endlesly to turn bluetooth on

I'm using 163.44 (as listed on the giude). Hibernation works on my XP Pro/Vista dualboot. I never tested sleep but I have not experienced any wake up problems.

Dont know if any of this is related, Dell always recommends installing the System software before any other drivers. I also used the XP drivers of my D630 on my XPS instead of those on this guide. The only different driver was the Nvidia 163.44, bluetooth and card reader.

I didnt get a graphics card for mine, since I boght my m1330 for work only and everything else I can do on my home PC. and didnt find any reference to the graphics drivers then, which I found finally on the Intel website:
Mobile Intel® 965 Express Chipset Family

I've had a few probs with BSD-s(blue screens of death) with xp lately and had to reinstall it a few times. Hope this time it will be fine thou. Will try installing lastxp the next time somethin happens. Any1 else havin trouble with windows Stop fatal errors? also Partition magic sais somethin fishy is goin on as well.

have u tried 153908 in extracted state?

only extract the contents, don't run it.

remove all existing sound drivers u might have used. (this can be a big problem)

open device manager and find the sound card and load the extracted drivers from the location. i think it was the wdm folder. cant remember now.

hdmi also works.. its another file R156712.EXE

As far as I am concerned, all my hardware is working in both XP and Vista, except perhaps Turbo Memory.

Does anyone know if Turbo Memory can be enabled in XP?
