Dell XPS 15 1080p Screen no longer available

Any reasons why Dell removed the option for buying the 1080p display with the XPS 14/15 series? I see they now sell only the 720p display.

 

Rumor is that it is due to shortage of the 1080P screens. Hopefully it will be back as an option after the first of the year for the XPS 15.

 

On Dell Singapore's website, the 1920x180 res option is back again.

Dell UK never lost the option...

Sucks - US company, and they don't provide the best here.

It's out of stock still. Just asked again about 10mins ago. It's the only thing holding me back from ordering.

 

I spoke to Dell a couple of weeks ago when the FHD option disappeared for the XPS 15. The information I was given was that Dell currently expects up to a six month delay in availability of the 1920x1080 screens, but there is some hope they may be available (in the US) as early as March, 2011.

When I asked about the XPS 17, the word was that it would get a full HD option at some point but without a date.

All of this is subject to change, of course, but take it for what it's worth.

 

Wow. I've decided not to wait until that screen becomes available yet and opted to get the 720p option. If I want to I can always upgrade to the 1080p screen myself.

 

I'm waffling on whether to order with the 720 screen and get the 1080 later. What concerns me is how long it will be before aftermarket screens become available. That 720 screen has the same resolution as my netbook for cryin' out loud. My E6500 that I have for work has a great screen on it. I wish I could get resolution at least equal to that on a 15" XPS!

 

Yea. I'm hoping they will have some in Dell Spare Parts after they come back in stock and I'll try to pull one from there.

 

Dell UK did lose the option for a while (I wanted one, but it wasn't there), but regained it on the 14th December and has been there ever since.

 

Well, I pulled the trigger on one with the 720p screen and ordered a replacement screen from ScreenTek. They supposedly have the original AUO17ED part in stock for $167 plus tax and shipping. Crossing fingers this turns out OK...

I also bought 8GB Kingston RAM from New Egg for $100 shipped. Dell's RAM prices are silly high.

 

Be sure to tell me how that replacement screen stacks up! I got stuck with a 720p screen and would love to upgrade!

 

I think some of us need to go on ahead and open up a "screen" thread that features all the possible alternative screens for others to follow since the currently offered screen are pretty bad...anyone?

 

Will do, but you really have to question the wisdom of my approach here since the first thing I'm going to do when I get my new lappy is void its warranty.

At first I thought I would try to sell the old screen on eBay to recoup some of the extra cost (which isn't really much more than Dell was charging anyway), but now I think I might have to keep it in case I need to swap it out to have it serviced...

 

It will not void your warranty, so long as you dont damage anything whilst doing it.
Dell provides the manuals for replacing the display, and only state that if you cause any damage it wont be covered under warranty.

Also they wont provide support for the replacement part unless its a Dell part

 

My 720p display does look great compared to my 1680x1050 screen on my 1520, however I need the 1080p badly. I love the contrast and colors but the lack of resolution is killing me.

 

Since folks here are talking Jan-Mar for 1080p availability, I'm just going to hold off and see what pops up new in 1H2011.

For toying around, I ordered a ThinkPad Edge 15", to drop a Phenom II x920 Black Edition into, already ordered 8GB 1333 RAM + AS5 from NewEgg.

Should be a decent toy to play with for under $700 total investment.

 

I must be a bit confused -- what is the actual, maximum resolution of the 720P screen? I also have an Inspiron E1505 (that is about 3 years old) that shows a maximum resolution of 1680x1050 and an Inspiron 1525 (about a 1 1/2 years old) that shows a maximum resolution of 1440x900 -- I can't believe that the older models have a better resolution than what is available for the current XPS.

 

I believe the 720p resolution on the XPS 15 is 1366 x 768, which is actually the standard when it comes to 720p res these days.

As to why your older notebook as a 'better' resolution, I believe it has got to do with aspect ratio.

Newer notebooks are moving away from the 16:10 aspect ratio, and towards the 16:9 one instead, which explains the 'lousier' resolution. The next best resolution that you can get would be the 1600x900 I think.

 

So will the graphics card/screen actually support more lines than the 768? Similar to how a 720p plasma TV will support 1080i resolution?

 

notebooks are moving from 1440*900 and 1680*1050 (standard on many notebooks above €900) to 1388*768 (standard on.. almost everything), i can hardly believe this.

of course, the graphics card supports a minimum of 2x 2560*1600

 

The laptop supports 1366x768 as it's maximum resolution. My last 17" was 1440x900 for it's max.

 

But my last 15" (the 1525) was 1440x900 and I don't remember upgrading the monitor, so why have less resolution now with a higher end laptop?

 

I guess we all have to do away with the idea that higher-end notebooks must come with high resolutions... We have seen far too many powerful notebooks coming with the 1388x768 resolution, the Asus' notebooks especially.

 

Does it really make much difference?

I'm a programmer myself, so yes I really do appreciate more vertical real-estate however at the same time I hate my code wrapping all the time when I have property panes on both sides of my IDE eating up lots of horizontal real estate.

It seems the amount gained on the sides is more than what's lost from the top and bottom? I'm not an expert on displays but the way I see it is that:

1200x800 - 1366x768 = +166 Pixels gained horizontally, 32 Pixels lost vertically.

 

I'm a coder myself, unlike IDEs I use VIM a lot under linux and have at least 10 to 15 such windows open simultaneously and many a times open two to three side by side or some times 4 of em in each corner while coding... I have a 1440x900 resolution since mine is a 3yr old laptop and I have felt the resolution to be acceptable thought I could use a higher resolution....

I tried to code on my friend's laptop couple of times who has a 1366x768 and I felt the resolution to be way too small for this purpose.... So vertical screen real-estate also matters... It matters when you have some taskbar or dock in the bottom of your screen as well - on today's 720p screens if you have a dock and if you do not see the auto-hide you feel like you've alreay filled up 25% of your screen (which I guess is true)....

1440x900 resolution is a far better resolution and shouldn't have been abandoned that easily.... Apple still uses it for their displays in MacBooks....

 

I do see a valid argument. I would of preferred the 1440x900 resolution myself but I had a need to get a smaller laptop and I didn't want to wait for the availability of the 1080p display or pay the extra cost involved in it. If I must I'll upgrade it to a 1080p screen later or use an external. I used a netbook that had a 1024x600 display and try coding on that sometime. It's kinda painful. I can do with the 1366x768 and the lacking power in the netbook was troublesome for me.

After getting my XPS 17 delayed numerous times after ordering it on Dec. 7, I ended up cancelling the order and ordering an XPS 15 ShipsFast system on Dec. 30.

There were no options to choose in terms of processor, memory, hd, etc. I bought it knowing it came with 720p display. It's listed in the tech specs on the site. When it arrived today, I was surprised to find that I have 1080p display.

 

Maybe I'll get lucky and get one when it shows up today. Probably not. Luck is never really with me but you never know.

EDIT: Got it today and no luck. I ended up with the 720p display.

 

I ordered the standard build XPS 15 on New Years Day - got it today and it came with the AUO17ED 1080p display! Rock on! I know the order said 720p. So, I wonder what else this beast has on it that I didn't order. Can't complain!!!

 

maybe they ran out of "HD" screens, so they just use full-hd panels to avoid long waiting times...

Figures that would happen. I did call Dell about my concern and it would cost $160 to return it. They did give me 2 options though.

1) Order the new one now before doing the return and they would waive the restock fee for the old one.

2) They would apply a $120 refund to the current laptop.

I ended up choosing #2 only because there is not enough room on my finance account to cover #1. The screen is an additional $165 I think to get it.

I'll order the 1080p display when they are available from spare parts.

BTW, Does anyone have a part number for the 1080p screen?

be sure to get v4, v5 is some crap 200:1 contrast screen, and the others are 60% color gamut also found in the studio lines.

I called and they agreed to replace my 720p screen I got with my replacement system to the new 1080p screen for free. I asked the part number for the new screen and they said its #X7C4C

 

If that is a part number usable at dell spare parts then that will be massively useful for a price quote at minimum. Thanks.

Ok. Can anyone confirm if the Dell Studio 1555 1080p display is compatible with the XPS 15? I know it is inferior but if I have to I'll get that revision later on.

 

it'l probably fit.. the model number is B156HW01 v0, and v1 for the xps 16 (15.6") part, they should be indentical in terms of color space and contrast.

Ok. I just submitted a part price request from dell noting the dell part number and also using the AUO17ED given by someone else.

I'm seeing supposed B156HW01 v4 displays on ebay. US market ones for $120 and UK market ones for $156 (when converted to US currency).

 

but watch out, many sellers dont actually have the display in stock, and send you a compatible one.

Anyway, I went to the configurator for the XPS 15 and noticed they brought back the B+RG LED screen. However, I was wondering if this is the same screen as before or are they substituting another panel?

I just received my L501X and the 720p screen (which was the only option available when I placed the order) is a complete piece of junk. The colors/resolution/viewing angle/on-screen text are absolutely inferior in comparison to my 4 year old Inspiron 6400. Therefore I immediately called up Dell sales support and requested an exchange for the 1080p screen. I was then told by Dell that the 1080p isn't available, and won't be till at least 30 days later. Then they accepted my request to return my L501X for a full refund.

 

Aha! I believe that is indeed the awesome 1080p B+RGLED display that everyone loves. Did it also cost $195 for the 1080p upgrade back in November?

 

That's odd. I called this morning and they are overnighting one as a warranty replacement for me. Should be here tomorrow. They did confirm it was the B+RGLED screen too.

 

Did you order the 720p or the 1080p? Does that mean that Dell is giving you a free upgrade to 1080p by sending you a replacement?

 

Just talked to US sales rep and they stated that they do not know when they will recieve FHD-screens again.
