Is there any problem wiping a new G1S and putting XP on it? Is there any step by step process posted on how to do something like this? Guess I'd be interested in viewing a process for wiping and re-installing Vista too, just in case. I'm not exactly computer savy when it comes to this stuff....
Thanks!!

Well you would have to create a new XP CD with nLite and integrate the S-Ata drivers. Else you won't be able to install it.
Fortunately i've got almost all XP-Drivers for the G1S. I will upload them now. They're probably up in a hour.
Edit: Here you go:

If you need further assistance, don't hesitate to ask. -
ColdSoul,
THANK YOU for the XP driver post! This will help me greatly in my quest to quell the Vista beast and keep XP! I will post my results soon from these drivers. -
Resistance is futile. Vista is inevitable.
-
Lol. Why is everyone hating Vista? i thought it only had problems for the people that updated to it, not when it was the first OS installed on the computer.

Too flashy

Aero grows on you. Put all those 3Dmarks to work when you're not in a game.
-
I'm getting used to vista, is there a way to turn off the "windows needs your permission to do this" prompts?

Coldsoul is that avatar from Crysis? I cant wait for that game. Vista... I dont know about that one.

Hey I just joined this forum since I just started looking for a laptop for college. I've always been a desktop guy and enjoy building 'em so I thought I'd check in and see what was up in the laptop world. Anyways I just thought I'd say this forum is great and I'll def stay an active member. The point of this is I was wondering if you included the s-ata drivers in that pack u posted? and if not where i could get them since once I have em I'm gonna order my G1S-A1!
-
but with xp...we cant use dx10 right (for when dx10 games come out)?
-
Download them separately if you want:

XP is faster on G1S than Vista or not ?
And for the games ? -
As for the games: Meanwhile it's proven that many benchmarks (such as 3DMark) and many games gain performance if they're run on XP. In 3DMark there is a average difference of 200 to 300 points (G1S)
I don't have any XP real world benchmarks at hand, but i'm sure there are many threads where you can get some information on this... -
How do you install the SATA driver? Or do you just put the contents on a disk and load them at the beginning of the installation? Also, would this work to dual boot with XP?
-
You have to slipstream the drivers with the XP install disk using Nlite. Yes, you can dual boot XP.
-
I need to switch to XP as well. Where can I find more details on Nlite and slipstreaming?
-
Everything works with those XP drivers! There is one system device not detected in DM, but it doesnt seem to effect anything. Also the G1S will not return from a suspend correctly in XP, the monitor doesnt turn back on. OH WELL, I will just use XP untill I HAVE to go to Vista for some future game.
Thanks Again Coldsoul!!! -
Thx for the link coldsoul, I can't wait for my G1S! Also I found a link to a guide for installing xp on an HP, it has the same chipset as the G1s so while the components such as the GPU and others may differ it should be basically the same, but Its on my other computer so I'll post it once I get a chance. Also, it explains how to use NLite to slipstream the SATA drivers into the XP disk for anyone who does'nt know. Look for it in about 10 hrs.
-
what device doesn't work in xp with the drivers Jackal_49? I'll look around for it.
-
it does not come from suspend on vista too... also test and see if your cpu speedsteps when on ac we need bios updates
-
um.. I am having xp on G1s, all devices are installed and "working" (no yellow ? in device manager"
so i can safely say that the G1S cannot go into/out of standby properly is a well-known issue? also that the cpu does not go have speedstep when on ac is also a known issue?
how about the problem of asus's wireless console 2 inability to disable the wireless (Fn+F2)? i can enable & disable the bluetooth but not the wireless. I am using the G1 version of the wireless console.
i also noticed one more problem, the top right hand usb port (posterior view) does not seem to power down after shutting down windows. it only turns off after i switch off the adapter. I had my cooler plugged into that port and it was spinning non-stop even after i shutdown. I tried the usb mouse on that particular port and the red led was on for a while before it switched off itself. all other ports are ok with the cooler except that particular one. anybody have tt problem too? -
what does it mean by having a "lemon"?
i have one more concern regarding temperatures. My G1S runs at
no loads loads
HDD - 51 oC 54 oC
GPU - 69 oC 89 oC
CPU - 61 oC 83 oC
Is this normal? it seems awfully hot. no loads means just surfing the net and nothing else and loads means playing games. And i am already using a notebook cooler. And the vent at the back is not blocked. -
The HDD temps are fine, but the CPU and GPU temps are a little hot. Mine at idle are at about 50C, and under intense CPU use it gets up to 66-70C.
-
-
how do i check if its working?
is there any recommended programs to accurately check the temperatures? Is everest ultimate ok? it seems inacurate. or what should i use? -
Basically all the temperatures these softwares tell you come from the same source (BIOS via ACPI) so installing new software cannot make them more accurate. How do you mean Everest is inaccurate?
Use RMClock to monitor the speed of your CPU. Do not enable CPU management (leave it on No Management). To check if the CPU clocks down and up dynamically, e.g., run SuperPI; it should clock at its max speed; then stop it and if nothing else CPU-intensive is running on the system, it should clock down to its minimum speed. -
The link at msfn.org isn't working. Can someone quickly give me the scoop on how to slipstream XP for my G1S?
I downloaded the drivers and nLite. I am just not sure if I need every driver he posted. Also, do I need to format before I install XP or will I get that option from the disk I am creating? -
You should get the option to format if it's just a modified XP installation disk.
-
When I insert drivers using nLite. Can I select the PNP option or should I use the text option?
-
Re-up! Really need these drivers.
-
-
The drivers link doesn't work anymore.
Can somebody mail it to me, or give a another link.
Where did they found the xp drivers anyway?
I can't find anything. -
http://nsa.f28.us/G1S/Asus_G1S_XP_Driver_Pack.zip
I used that to install XP on my G1S. Works beautifully. The Camera's image is upside down for me, and I haven't had chance to test the wired LAN yet, but everything else is glorious. I get 5-15 more FPS in some games than I did in Vista, too. -
coldsoul, you said you had most of the drivers in that .rar...whats missing? im looking for the best possible driver set to make my custom windows xp cd. also, someone else said they found a good set of drivers but with camera flaws??
im realy confused. Im just trying to find the one that will work properly -
I have a question. Do I use Nlite to slipstream ALL the drivers from the driver pack or just the SATA drivers. The way I understand it, you slipstream sata drivers then install drivers from the pack AFTER xp is installed. is this correct?
-
And to those who want me to upload that driver pack again: I don't have it anymore. Since i bought the Toshiba X205 i didn't need the drivers anymore so i deleted them (or i forgot where i've stored the drivers).
I uploaded the S-Ata drivers in case someone needs them (they need to be slipstreamed via nLite into XP):

I just got my G1S, was going to install xp pro until SP1 comes out for vista, then I realized there just aren't drivers out there for XP. While it's possible to get the drivers, but many of them are customized or modified, and that just does not sit well with me. Why? Who is to guarantee the safety and integrity of these drivers? Could they be tainted with malicious code? Who knows. But one thing I definitely do know is that I'm not taking a chance with them.
So what am I going to do? going to Vista, still haven't decided if I'm going to do 32 or 64 bit yet. -
http://nsa.f28.us/G1S/Asus_G1S_XP_Driver_Pack.zip
They aren't modified or customised in any regard. I tried the driver pack (when i had the G1S to test) i posted on page 1 and the one on page 4 and there aren't any differences at all if i remember correctly. -
Think you for your kind reference to that link. But I think I'm going with Vista-64. After spending the whole weekend trying to get this bad boy to work with XP, I read quite some materials on installing XP and I honestly don't think there are a complete set of drivers for this system for XP-32 that has not been in the hands out "enthusaist," "crackers" or "hackers." The video driver is certain been modified, b/c only Asus has the driver for this video card and they only have it for vista (not even nvidia makes this driver, believe it or not).
Hopefully, SP1 for Vista is release sooner rather than later. -
alright, i'm on the verge of giving up. vista64 is super duper buggy, AIM Pro doesn't even work!!! Maybe I'll have better luck with vista32, it's been close to 5 years since the first release of x86-64 hardware (or was it longer) and we're still on majority 32bit software. What a waste of hardware power!!!!!
What MS should have done was made Vista default 64-bit with 32-bit was an hard to come by option (maybe charge an extra 20%), this way it will force the industry to speed things up. I know i'm talking out my @$$, but I'm just fustrated, a whole weekend filled with RAM problems and unstable windows vista to add to that. [sigh] -
That Problem with ASUS BIOS (IMHO).
You can just unplug from 4Gb to 2Gb - and you will receive good result.

It problem not depend from some one model - it problem has all SantaRosa notebook. -

Try here, not sure if the drivers mentioned are newer or older or even the same, but they seemed to work at one time or another.

I've been researching this lately as I need XP to run some audio engineering software.
It appears that bios 205 offers the option to run a SATA drive in either Enhanced or Compatable mode. I've read that Compatable mode emulates a PATA connection, thus bypassing the SATA driver requirement at OS installation level.
Once XP is installed you can install the Asus Matrix drivers in Windows and reboot and change back to Enhanced mode and everything should be ok.
I will test this theory on my train ride home tonight and report back. -
I finally managed to install xp on my asus g1s.
The new XP drivers for G1s can be found here

As per my above post, I am reporting back 100% success using this method.
If slipstreaming is a bothersome concept for you the solution is simple.
1. Download bios 205.
2. Extract zip file to the root directory of a usb key drive.
3. Restart computer and press F2 to enter bios.
4. From first menu select Easy Flash.
5. Browse the xtree style GUI that appears to drive B:\ and press enter.
6. Your usb drive contents will be visible now - execute the program and confirm the flashing process. (Make sure you have plenty of battery power, as a power failure will result in your bios being permanently damaged).
7. Reboot and re-enter your newly updated BIOS.
8. Browse to the IDE section and change the mode from Enhanced to Optimised.
9a. Set the boot order to CD first and reboot into your Windows XP installation CD. Do not hit F6. (9b Install windows)
10. Install Asus Matrix drivers and reboot.
11. Enter into Bios again and return the IDE mode to Enhanced, reboot and you're ready to install the remaining drivers.
Hope this is helpful to someone. Cheers
