Proturbo and Sunday Ironfoot, how do you find the performance of the laptop with the T9500 processor now? does it run hotter? is the fan on more?
WHere did you manage to find the chip from, they seem to be hard to come by?
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

I never updated the CPU. I think the cost is too high. All I found was a reasonable priced T9300 in a norwegian web shop and some T9500 on ebay. The T9500's on ebay are usually enigneering samples (ES), so you have to do some research and consider if you will go for one of those.
The only reason to upgrade to a T9300 would be to get less fan noise if it runs cooler. The performance increase should not be that much compared to switching the internal drive to an SSD, which has been awesome upgrade in my case. It all comes down to what you are using your laptop for.

The temperature is actually less because the T9500 is a 45nm chip compared to the T7X00 that comes with it which is a 65nm chip (basically smaller). And because it runs cooler, it also runs quieter and gives you slightly longer battery life.

Also there was a noticable performance improvement with certain tasks, compiling large Visual Studio projects for instance, in fact the CPU upgrade had a bigger impact in VS project compile times than upgrading to the intel SSD (I benched them separately). The performance isn't dramatic but it's noticable. Remember with this upgrade you're increasing clock speed from 2.2GHz to 2.6GHz but also boosting L2 cache from 4MB to 6MB, also I believe the T9500 has extra instructions.

I found mine on ebay, they're not cheap but not too pricey either, mine was around £180. I basically did it to improve the longevity of my laptop so I can hold onto it for a couple more years, beats spending £1000 on a brand new laptop. :)

That's very interesting. My biggest concern about this laptop is the fan making too much noise. I'm now running Windows 7 64-bit, with balanced power settings. Compiling a pretty large Visual Studio project makes the fan run at full speed and slowing down again when done. Is that the case with the T9500 CPU as well ?
Using HW monitor, the tempratures reach more than 70 degrees C, when compiling.
I will definetely change the CPU if it runs cooler.

I´ve managed to get everything working in Windows 7 x32. The AMT ME driver was the last one to find. I actually used the one on the ASUS Driver CD. It didn´t complain. There are some new AMT drivers for Windows 7 on the ASUS support site. AMT ME wasn´t one of them.
I´m having problem with Hibernation though. When trying to hibernate or close the lid it hangs. Same problem when I was using Windows 7 RC. Otherwise everything seems to be working. I even got the Fingerprint sensor to work with ASPM. New drivers didn´t work but some of the old ones did. Now I just have to figure out the Hibernation problem.

    Regards

Thanks for the replies, very useful I might give it a go it as well.
I found on another forum the updated utilities for VX2S for Win 7 can be downloaded from other notebook models in Asus download pages. I downloaded the following from the VX5 download page:
    ATKOSD2
    ATK Generic Function Service Utility
    ATK Hotkey
    ATKACPI Driver
ASUS Wireless Switch (Wireless Console3) Utility
    Power4Gear Hybrid Utility
    Intel Turbo Memory Technology
    Intel Matrix Storage Manager

Also there are some additional drivers on the N61Vn page as well:
    http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=N61Vn

    Hope it helps!

I have the same problem with XP. This mostly happens on a cold start like when the notebook is first turned on and can happen on boot as well as resume from hibernation. I have the latest 301 Bios. It will do this a couple of times until I remove the battery for 15 seconds or so and then put it back on and then it boots normally. No problem on warm restarts from xp shutdown menu. It only seems to happen on resume or fresh boot while it has been off for a while. Any ideas?

Solved! Since the fan shutdown issue logically seemed like a cpu heat shutdown I removed the heatsinks and found the thermal paste hard as a rock. It probably did not make contact until the laptop had run for a minute or so and expanded from the heat. In any case, cleaning off and applying new thermal compound to both the CPU and Graphics chip seems to have solved the problem. No more high fan then shutdown on cold boots! Just as a FYI I now have a blu-ray burner and HD-DVD drive for my VX2S. I searched all over the net thru different forums to find out what model works with this Lambo. It is very nice to be able to play everything. The HD-DVD is a Toshiba TS-L802A and the Blu-ray burner is a Panasonic UJ-210. Playback is done with 163.76 custumized Laptoptogo drivers. The newer drivers do not handle video overlay and will not playback Blu-ray discs. Just so you know...

Ok so maybe my fix didn't work so well. It lasted about a week but now the cold start high fan shutdown issue has reared it's ugly head again. It seems to occur in the first 20 seconds of first boot. Maybe I'll try Artic Silver since I just used generic thermal paste.

Just wanted to tell you that i've removed the plastic cover under the "wheel" the covers the fan. Great succes!! no more noise and lower temps.
I recommend this to anyone tired of the EXTREAMLY noisy fan  .

Simple fix that can be undone without problems :)

Wow, can't believe it has been almost 2 and a half years with my VX2S. Gotta say... worth every single cent =)

I do have a problem though:

    //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// PROBLEM: "ME Error..." during boot up
    //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I recently upgraded the BIOS to 301. I am still using Vista 32 (I know...). And after the lamborghini logo screen I started to see the "ME Error..." appear in red. I am guessing it has something to do with the Intel Active Management Technology.

So when I checked in device manager I saw this:

    Under "Ports (COM & LPT)":
    (!) Intel(R) Active Management Technology - SOL (COM6)
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

    Under "System devices":
    (!) Intel(R) Management Engine Interface
This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I don't really use AMT so I tried disabling the above two mentioned devices via the device manager but the "ME Error..." still shows up. In the previous BIOS versions, AMT could be disabled via the BIOS Setup, but I can't find that option for 301.

The only hardware change I have made is replaced one of the stock 1GB RAMs to a new Kingston 2GB DDR2 667Mhz PC2-5300 RAM.

Once I get this fixed I'm gonna get a Hitachi 500GB 7200RPM and do a clean reinstall.

    //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Here are some of the problems I have solved in the past (hope my solutions help):

    1) Screen not starting during boot up but HDD LED shows activity: Need to change Motherboard and/or GPU.

    2) Power Calibration Errors while burning DVDs: Need to change BluRay Burner.

    3) Heating Problems: Open up your VX2S. Use a vacuum cleaner and a paint brush. Use the paint brush to get the dust off and let the vacuum cleaner suck it up. At least that's what I did =P. Remember to remove the fan (need to unscrew 3 screws) and clean that thoroughly too. I had to use a little bit of water and cloth for the fan as the dust was really hard to get off. (12+ hours X 800 Days) = 10,000 Hours of total uptime. Whad did you expect? -> Result: Average temperature dropped from 86C to 72C. (That is a tonne of less fan noise)

    Hello

I migrated my vx2s to seven-64 and I find it pretty slow also, slower than using vista ! I have 4 Gigs RAM and no SSD. DPC Latency checker reports high figures and I could not figure out why. I tryed with less memory (2*1Gig, 1*2Gig), did not see any improvement.

    any clue ???

I tried the same Kador, and ended up rolling back to Winxp 32-bit. So far that's been the quickest out of the three (xp 32, vista 32, 7 64)

    Dear all,
Great for keeping this thread alive for all of us lambo owner. I'm having a definite nagging issue on my recent upgrade to win7-ultimate (32bits). I can't seems to find the drivers for two (2) devices which is listed in the device manager:
    a) PCI Serial Port
    b) PCI Simple Communications Controller

I really needed all your advice on where or what these two devices are? and hopefully can point me to where I can get their drivers downloaded and install.

I've been going on this for the past 2 months on Google and tonnes of other forums, even trying out all the suggestions I can find here but no luck.

Please if anyone can help me resolves this issue, your help is greatly appreciated and a million thanks to you.

I have these same devices listed in my Win7 64-bit device manager and I decided simply to not install a driver. In device manager, the properties, detail tab shows the Hardware IDs are the following:

    PCI Serial Port = VEN_8086&DEV_2A07

Not sure, but this one is related to Intel AMT. Possibly Intel AMT SOL.

PCI Simple Communications Controller = VEN_8086&DEV_2A04

This one is Intel AMT MEI

i got my VX2S in November 2007 and i have to say i'm really disappointed with it. the right speaker blew out in less than 6 months. granted i had a habit of listening to music loudly, but not even 6 months? the left one is still going strong!

it also heats up quickly and is very loud, the fan seems to get clogged up with junk very quickly.

the worst is what happened yesterday, though. i left the computer asleep for 3-4 hours and when i came back i went to Hotmail... shortly afterwards the screen turned pink, i could see lines all over the place, and in a few seconds it went black. not "off" black, "screen saver" black, and has been so since then, no matter how many times i start it.

i had that annoying double accent virus, but that was it, so i really think it was some hardware failure. i for one am not buying another Asus computer ever again.

    Hi!
I'm struggling to find the right camera driver for my VX2S for Win7 x64...actually I cannot find my PID in the ASUS drivers page for cameras:

    USB\VID_05E3&PID_F191

I believe under vista it displayed as Genesys Logic camera....anyone knows if the driver exists?

    Thanks in advance!

I got the same issue with the right speaker. Then, I took the VX2S for a warrant; and the speaker worked fine. However, the CPU's sensor is always about 70+ celcius in average at the moment. I had opened the case and use thermal paste (AS5) to fix the heat issue but the sensor still remained the same...

    Hello
I am trying to revive a Lamborghini struck by lightning
Changed the motherboard, DC board, video card, CPU and RAM
Now when pressing the power button the LEDs light up for 2 seconds and then it shuts off.
Nothing from the speakers and nothing on the screen
Could there something that I have missed while changing all the parts (BIOS related?)
Should a new motherboard just fire up after being installes in the old unit?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    @ok_simpson

That kind of sounds like either the CPU or GPU isn't seated well, a RAM problem, or maybe a bad hard drive connection. It could be a short somewhere, but it'd usually stay on less than 2 seconds in that case.

The lights are on for 7.5 seconds and I can hear the HDD spinning before the machine shuts off again
No action from the DVD drive
No action from the CPU fan
Could that be it? Is a VX2 smart enough not to power on if the CPU fan is not working or is the fan not working because the computer is not powering up.
    Hmm...

Yeah if the CPU fan is dead it may not power on, it shouldn't. Check the connection and the wires. If it's on for that long, check the hard drive and optical drive, try removing them and booting if you haven't already.

    Thanks for you reply AUG

    I should try replacing it

Would anyone know where I can find a replacement CPU fan for a VX2?

As far as the optical drive it has no effect on the situation, and I can hear the HDD everytime I turn the computer on, so it must be OK, although I do not understand how everything else got fried and the HDD did not.

Your best bet is to try to find a hi-res pic of the fan and find the manufacturer and model number, then search ebay and google for it. Or if you can't find a pic, take it apart... with luck you should be able to find a fan under $20.

    Hi All,

Anyone looking for drivers should try DriverMax. I've had very good luck with it and it's free if you only download 2 drivers in a 24 hr period. It worked for me with Win xp and now 7 64 bit. My vx2s is running great and win 7 actually seems faster to me than xp was. :)

Hi willfitz and welcome to the forums.
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by accessing the memory bank to increase your ram to 4GB, but assuming you have 2GB of ram installed, you will need to physically install 4GB of ram to increase your memory to 4GB.

Looking for a modular battery (the one that goes into the DVD slot).

Anywhere to look from? ASUS doesn't seem to have it in their eStore.

hi there. yesterday my GPU stopped to work.. I'm searching for a mxm module for my VX2S.
I finally found a 8600M GT to replace mine (if you try to do that, pay attention at the side of the chip! because there are also a reversed 8600M GT), but I'm tempted to buy a mxm ii GT 130 M.. what do you think? will it work?

    here there are the pictures:

anyone tried to upgrade the GPU or have info about the temperature, the compatibility, the watt consumption.. both the GPUs are rev 2.0 and the module is the same..

I hope in your help :)

Thank you very much! Looks like a good site for parts. :)

    NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT - Notebookcheck.net Tech
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M - Notebookcheck.net Tech

The 130M consumes 3 more watts of power, but the smaller 55nm structure could mean less heat output.
No idea about compatibility though, the motherboard may not recognize it.

If you find out anything more, let us know! :D

Can anyone confirm if this is the right battery? http://www.asusparts.eu/product_info.php?products_id=18777

3 times? it sounds strange.. maybe you're talking about the mxm III module.. the mxm II is the same as lambo vx5 and it's 23W, against 20W of the 9600M GT. I dont know the power consumption of the 8600 but it's should 20W like the 9600 :)

ok, I found a post where people upgraded 8600M GT first to 9600M GT and then to GT130M.. I'm faithful.. just wondering if I will have to change the way to cool memories (the heatspreader in the bottom, that cover the GPU when is mounted.. what do you think?

I don't think I understand what you mean..

But all the memory chips seem to be in the same place, so it should be a simple switch.

There aren't any heatspreaders for the memory if I remember correctly. Do you mean the white thermal pads?

there are thermal pads in the same side of the core, while on the ither side there is a pice of aluminium that it's in contact with the memories and is fixed with the same bolts that fix the gpu

Oh, now I get it. :p

I don't think you could improve it in any way, unless you make a new one out of copper.
The newer card shouldn't produce much more heat than the 8600GT already does.

    ok, here I am..

    that's the actual situation:

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Special thanks to an italian user from hwupgrade, Dandrake, that helps me with a modded bios version and with the inf file to let the drivers recognise the gpu.
I'm still verifying the stability of the notebook. the fan are ok (not always at max), temperatures are 45-48 idle (52-55 on the 8600) and I saw 81° under stress.
only at the first boot the laptop didnt want to enter windows: when the password screen appeared, it freezed and reboot. after 2 reboot it worked.. we will see..

The image isn't showing, but it sounds good if you got it working.
How much did the upgrade cost?

I can see the image, this is the direct link

    http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/4171/lambogt130m.jpg

the video card costed 175$ shipped. 124€.
I had to pay 30€ more of taxes when it arrived.
but to me it was ok to spend 155€ for it.. moreover now the notebook is really cool :)

from 3300 to 5300 on 3dmark06 on stock and I used the last drivers.. I have to find a better version, I'm sure it can go over..

39-43° in idle, 81° under stress
    better than the 8600!

    I used it..
I didnt remember so much gain.. but maybe they improve the program.. I rember that cpu-z didnt read the voltage I set on RMclock

yes, expensive, but a new laptop would have been 2000€ and it's not worth to me.. for my actual usage..
