It almost sounds like a connection/power issue. RMAing it is the best idea, if still under warranty. They will hopefully fix the problem ;) Not like when I sent mine in and they took an airbrush to clean out dust and said it solved both driver, software, and 8600M GT overheating...but that's another story.

It sounds like the inverter or the backlight has a problem. A weird problem, at that. But yeah, if the machine is under warranty, RMA, rather than investing time into solving it yourself (would require disassembly and some cable tossing around / replacement, at least).

Unfornatelly the warranty is over... :(
Today I wrote Asus Support and they instructed me to update my BIOS, I did it and for some time it worked, but as soon as I turned the laptop off and turned it on again, the problem returned.
That's why I don't think it's hardware related, or else it wouldn't turn on when I press FN+F7, or am I thinkink wrong?

The only way to rule out hardware issues is to restore the laptop to a factory default fresh install and test it out. This would be a major pain, but could save you some money.

Yeah I had to RMA that machine and it came back just fine. Apparently in my case it was a hardware issue since I was already on the latest of drivers and bios.

If the problem appears in the BIOS, then RayanMX's suggestion would not work. Since if it appears in BIOS, it is definitely not connected to the OS.

So it is either a BIOS bug, or really the hardware (inverter, backlight, or cables) are malfunctioning. It seems weird though: when it's the cables, problem usually changes with the tilt of the screen; when it's inverter, it usually doesn't come on for a while after it's gone off. Not sure how backlight problems would manifest themselves.

I would suggest trying different BIOS versions, reset BIOS to defaults etc. If nothing works, assume it's hardware, contact them back with this information, and ask them to send you a set of cables and inverter to you. Or buy some off ASUS eStore -- they are cheap. You'd need a bit of disassembly to replace them but it's not exceedingly difficult.

If it's backlight problem is more complicated, usually backlight cannot be removed from LCD so you would need the entire LCD replaced, which is expensive.

Can you give me the instructions?

See my post above as to why I don't think this is unlikely to be of any use. But it's something to try, of course.

I live in Brazil, and I don't believe there is an Asus technical center, that's why I'm trying so hard to fix it on my own.
I didn't want to take my laptop to an generic technician. But I think it'll be the only alternative. :(

    Tks again,

Intel Robson has been a failed idea to this date. There is no noticeable difference with or without it. I would just leave it enabled and foregt abou getting performance boost from this feature.

Have you uninstalled 'ADSM' Asus Data Security Manager. I believe your Deferred Procedure Calls are linked to that. I myself have DPC issues not with sound but with graphic drivers from laptopvideo2go's site.

Just a FYI for G2S owners, just want to pass on some information because I tested out some new drivers from laptopvideo2go.com. The 177.66 driver with modified inf file seem to be pretty good. They enable powermizer, allow the computer to go to sleep (and stay asleep), do not get too hot, and have some awesome benchmarks, in-game quality, and stability. If you want to try some out, I would suggest starting here. I did some testing with the 16x series and they were decent, but this gets another 100 or so point on 3dmark and it awesome in-game. Good luck.

    Hi All!
    I own a G2S - 2.2 laptop.
    Using vista home premium.
When i select full details and 32bit color depth the menus and icons are like "unstable" like slowly moving....it's a bit bad for the eye.
If i see big images no problems, just full details and 32 bit.Watching 16 bit color depth fix that.
Anyone can help? I'm just curious to know if it's an hardware or a software problem :((
New drivers updated too so...dunno really what to think of!
    Thanks anyone!
    Fabrizio

That sounds really odd. Have you tweaked any performance check boxes for animation, appearance, etc.? Also, have you installed any 3rd party themes?

thanks for answering.Nothing special to be honest installed, i also tried to remove SPLENDID with no improvement.I'm a bit lost really...today i tried to connect an external monitor with 32bit color and no problem shows.I think it should be a software issue...but dunno what to do :(

Try reinstall your GPU drivers or roll back to your previous driver. It definitely sounds like a software issue to me

    Hey gang,
Just got a G50vA2 and was fiddling around in bios... I saw an option to turn on some sort of temperature sensitive fan controller (or something to that effect)... Any input as to what this is? It sounds legit why do you think it was off?...

Hello everyone, just a quick update:

I have been playing games a bit more, so I have refreshed my drivers. The 177.66 Mod Inf was great...the only problem was Far Cry 2 graphics issues. So I went to 180.7 and were they great. My highest stock driver score ever, the only issue is that it has sleep issue. Mainly, a BSOD every time my laptop goes to sleep. Now, I am on 178.13, similar results as .66 but FC2 works. The 180 series is promising and more info to come.

On a separate note, I am considering an internal/external hard drive upgrade. Possibly a WD Black 7.2k320 or 500 (if it ever comes out) as well as an external hard drive at 1TB(3.5") or a 7.2k500(2.5"). Not sure what case to get for the 1TB, as a 2.5" 7.2k 500GB drive is probably another quarter or two away. If anyone is using a good esata case, please post :D

I am also going to call Asus and get my mobo replaced. Temps hover at 95C or so and I am getting tired of using a cooling pad at stock clocks. Will keep this updated, thanks for reading.

I find that Vantec Nexstar HDD enclosures are quite good. I assume they make some in the 3.5" format, too.

Well, just had a major let down this evening. I wanted to watch a movie on the family's new HDTV, so I grabbed my HDMI cable and hooked up to be faced with an immediate BSOD. I uninstalled the drivers and installed an old Asus version (176.10). To my surprise, they ran the HDMI flawlessly along with a bit of gaming after. I then enabled powermizer and ran 3DMark06, scoring in the 3900 bracket, with a peak temp of 85C. I realize now that this will be of less use, as many do not use PM. I use it because I don't like my graphics card going over 85C...which with 177.66 would still go over by 10C with PM enabled. Well, I am back on the hunt for a set and hopefully I can find one within the first 5 drivers I try. At this point, I feel that the stability and utility of the drivers are so much more useful than the performance. It is great to squeeze an extra 10 frames, but only at a cost of thermal issues and lack of other additional functions. I play CS 1.6 religiously, then some HL2 source stuff as well...and GRID occasionally. I am not a new-age gamer, so I find that the better drivers do not boost me very much due to their latest optimization. I missed ordering my external backup setup, but I am going to use an old external to get this RMA process started. I will keep this post updated with what I get in the next couple days...hopefully a better suggestion for yall. Thanks for listening - GenG

Folks. Not sure if this is of value or not, but I have Vista x64 and my touchpad key works, and it also toggles the eyeglow. I used the Touchpad drivers from the G2Sg x64 driver disc (borrowed from a friend). Here is the driver from ASUS (I have not verified if it is the same from the disc I borrowed) http://dlsvr.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers/Touchpad/VT64/V7.100.1301.2.1/Touchpad_vt64.zip

On another note. I have began to monitor my GPU temps using Speedfan, they are around 69ºC with minimal load (internet surfing). Should I be alarmed? I am using a Zalman NC2000 cooler and still getting a temp this high.

My temps are very similar to yours at minimal load. I always enable PowerMizer btw. Thanks for the info on the 64 bit driver, I am sure many will find it useful. It is great to see another G2S owner in here, welcome to the party.

Graingd 69C with Zalman might be few Celcius too high. No you shouldnt be concerned with a temp of 69C. Now if gaming you go over 90 or something i will be alarmed. Zalman cooler and 69C is satisfactory. What else you wana do man? Move to Antartica :)

Graingd i am about to test your 64 Bit driver. It better work man. Cause i had given up on the touch pad on/off feature after trying 10 different drivers.
    Update:
Ok I just tested the ALPS driver Version V7.100.1301.2.1 from the link that you provided. It is not working for me. Infact the entire KEYPAD does not work. Could you also post the Version that you are using?
Will you please email the driver that you have from the CD to my email. I sent you a private message. I would sure appreciate it.

Go to Device Manager >> Mice and Other Pointing Device >> Alps Pointing Device >> Right Click Properties >> Driver >> post the Version number & Date.

    Gengerald
sorry to hear your BSOD and HDMI deal. I played UT3 when i was home on an HDMI hook up to my 60 in Panasonic Plasma i had a blast and no hickups. Hope you can get this resolved.

Good to hear Raikay. I just called the NB support hotline and got an RMA number + hang up then a so-called department manager. Both denied any defect in the 8400M/8600M in any model. Nvidia has not alerted them to any issue and as a company they have not released any release...the usual. I tried to squeeze all the information I could get, but I settled for a call from the next manager up, 3rd tier. Who knows if he/she will ever call, but I suppose I will send in my laptop on the 27th, after a quick snowboard trip. After they clean my vents, I will call them back and send it in again. I have started to assemble a small claims court case which should be a slam dunk for the price that I paid for the laptop ($2400+). I don't expect Asus to replace the motherboard with something that will not overheat, but seeing this is my 3rd/4th RMA, I just don't want to deal with them anymore. So, they can pay for a new Clevo :) Just a quick update and when/if this administrator calls, I will post up again. I will start a new thread for the RMA process, just as a resource for other users. Happy holidays everyone!

Really? Now that just ticks me off. After talking to both a representative (overseas possibly) and self proclaimed department head(definitely local), the word recall or defect was denied and referred to as an unknown issue. I wonder if Canada and US share the technical support hot line. I will call them back on the 27th for another discussion as I am not gearing up for the holidays. Hmm, this should be interesting :) Thanks for that info sim.

Ok after install/uninstall reinstall and multiple tries i have the G2S A1 Touchpad working. By working i mean. They keypad works, it can be enabled and disabled with the Touch Pad Lock/Unlock Button for VISTA 64 Bit. I had to wait a year to get a fix for this thing...unbelievable.
This is what you need for it to work:
Goto Asus Support site G2SG Downloads and download the Touch Pad driver for Vista 64 bit version 7.100.1301.2 dated 9/12/2006
Use ATK DRIVERS from G2SG as well. If you do not update your ATK drivers with those available under G2SG download, the keypad won't work.
BTW: Touchpad manufacturer is ALPS and not Synaptics as we have debated before.
My thanks to the Original Poster of the solution GRAINGD

    hey guys
great thread - ive had my g2s for a year now and reading this stuff has finally given me the confidence to try and upgrade!
putting 2 gb of ram in the dedicated slot was a sinch, so now im gearing up for the tricky one
thanks to the fab guide on the thread, i was able to lift off the keyboard no problem
however, i cant seem to unscrew the screw on the silver plate.
i have a precision phillips screwdriver - 3 in fact, but im getting nowhere!
do i need a special screwdriver - i do see a reference to "m2x3" next to the panel
    is that something fancy?
or have i just got a duff screw?
    thanks!

Hey heavy. Unfortunately I have not gotten that far to upgrade my G2S yet, so I can not be of much help. I do not think it is a special head...can you describe it? It may be a torx.

An update on my B1's saga. My laptop should be in the shop, but I had another website design job so I had to let it run out. Had the RAM number and everything ready. I am working on a vlite iso at the moment and I now have a 1TB drive so I can make the necessary backup images. I should hopefully get it sent in soon, as long as I have no business going on. The support manager has not emailed me back. Last update was he was still waiting on any new information from his engineers.

Anybody tried putting Windows 7 on their G2S yet? I installed the 32-bit version of the beta (just read the post about how we finally found a 64-bit touchpad driver for this thing) it auto installed all the drivers except for an unknown device that I believe is related to the chipset driver and the touchpad, which installed fine with my vista 32 driver.

The only problem I have realized so far is when I use the FN + audio controls keys (f10, f11, f12) that the slider comes up on screen and moves around, but it doesn't actually control the audio in windows, it stays at the same setting.

    Any thoughts?

Raikay, can you post a link to the touchpad driver, or host it up on rapidshare or something, it doesn't seem to be on Asus' website anymore.

    Hi heavydrinking,

I would like to share my experience.

I also used my Precision Philips screwdrivers (a couple of) to try to open the "silver box", but unfortunately one of the little screwdriver broke on its screw thread. So I carried my G2S-B3 to a computer repair store nearby, where the guy helped to open the box. The only difference is that he used a pretty stronger (at least in appearance) screw driver, which I think is a common home-use one, with a couple of interchangeable screwdriver-heads.

You may try another bigger screwdriver. But be careful, just stop unscrewing in case you get stuck. Better turn to some professionals to avoid tragedy (I have already broken one plastic tab when upgrading the RAM).

I also have some questions about the ASUS G2S LCD screen.

1, The refresh rate is just 62 Hz, which is supposed to be a little bit higher to make your eyes comfortable. The windows suggest a 75 Hz at least. However, I can't find any options to adjust the refresh rate. The ASUS technical support representative told me that the refresh rate can be upgraded to a higher one via upgrading the monitor driver from the official site. However, I can't find this one on the Asus website. Does anybody know this issue?

2, The screen is gorgeous. But the color doesn't look as accurate as my previous TOSHIBA Satellite laptop (once calibrated by my digital design buddy). I know it is really complicated to calibrate the LCD screen. Anyway, did anybody has adjusted/calibrated his screen to a satisfactory level? Thank you.

This reasoning applied to older CRT screens. LCDs do not suffer from this. Since they only refresh the state of the pixels when needed (rather than once per refresh clock as CRT screens do) they can get away with slower refresh rates without causing discomfort.

There also exist automatic color calibration tools (e.g., Spyder I think is one such device) but I am not sure they are worth the investment for us "regular" users (as opposed to graphical artists etc)

Due to forum rules, I will not post the email, but I have recieved a response from the West Coast Asus repair center manager. Here is a summary of the emails:

Me: So, Asus has acknowledged the G1S has defective 8600M's and is replacing the laptop or upgrading the motherboard. Has Asus recognized the same issue with the G2S?

Asus: I currently do not have any information regarding this issue, please wait for information as I will contact HQ.

Me: I will wait for your response and I appreciate your help.

Asus: Yes, Asus is replacing the G1S with the G1SN motherboards. There is a thermal issue with selected 8600M's. (And further dancing around the G2S...)

These emails total a page each and the final response completely ignores the G2S...not even referencing them in his conclusion despite my direct inquiry.

I will be imaging, dbaning, and reinstalling Vista this weekend then I will request an RMA and keep yall posted. I just finished my project, so I should have two weeks to be yanked around and bs'd. The nice thing is that this will be my second RMA and I have many documented records in relation to this issue...thus small claims is always an issue.

I found the touchpad driver in the suggested location. Also the ATK driver. But both match existing versions on my machine (i.e. v7.100.1301.2 and 1043.2.15.66 (10/23/2006).

I force-updated the touchpad drivers, just in case. But after a reboot, behaviour is no different - my touchpad on-off key has no effect.

Is there another Asus util or driver I should be loading to help make it work? I disabled quite a few of the Run key ones over the past year. Direct Console is running, and HControl, and several of the Apoint2 ones, of course.

g8m3rtag & PeterWeb I have been on international travel and out of touch with internet. Once i get back i will send you guys the drivers i used. g8m3rtag i know you sent me a PM with your email. I apologize for a late response.

As far as your audio keys working with Windows 7 Good Luck. Its a Beta version and i am surprised that your Audio works at all :) Give them another 2 years to figure out Windows 7. Rumors are though that they might launch it in late 2009. Rumors are backed by critics calling Vista a FLOP.

Hello. I have a G2S-1A that I've been using for the last 1 and a half year and recently the monitor won't even turn on. I've had artifact issues for a while now with red and blue lines popping up occasionally and going away.

I've been reading. My screen remains black when I try to boot up, I hear the boom, but nothing else happens. This happened a few times yesterday and the day before but a few attempts of powering up fixed it. Now it seems I'm SOL.

I've talked to tech support and they've given me a RMA number. The thing is, they also mention that they will most likely just replace the motherboard.

I've read around and noticed that people who owns the G1S that had their motherboard replaced have gotten a newer version with the 9500m GT instead. I heard that it's slower due to the DRR2, has VRAM that it can't even physically use.

I live in the Markham area, and be going to the depot over at Cochrane.
Will my G2S-1A be getting the same motherboard?

If I am, is there anyway for me to argue for a better deal? I'm a gamer, I'm already experiencing less than stellar frame rates in games, I really don't like the idea of getting something 10% slower than something that I had originally paid for, especially due to defects out of my hands, since I don't even OC.

Is it possible to exchange this laptop for a newer model by paying the difference? What choices do I have?

A few other questions as well:
    - I'm getting conflicting answers: Is the G2Sg or G2Sv motherboard compatible with G2S?
    - If it is, has anyone here have or know of anyone who has convinced Asus to make the upgrade?

    Thanks
