Well anywho, the computer store phoned me today, the swapped the drives with another asus g2s and concluded that it was a hardware failure. So I got brand spanking new replacement today :) < 24 hour turnaround isnt all to shabby if i must say.

Sounds good Kryptic. Thats an awesome support.

Vista 64 i have posted detailed info on it and G2S in this thread you will have to dig for it. But in short Vista 64 is very stable and reliable on G2S. I see it running more efficient than 32 bit. My only problem so far has been the Alps Touch Pad driver for 64 bit wont turn the Hot Key next to power button on/off for the mouse track pad.

Very few softwares have issues with vista 64. Now talk about service pack 1 and 64 bit. Microsoft fixed the slow transfers vis flash drives. But i do see 'memory leaks' with firefox and few other applications that were fine before but with SP1 they are less efficient.
All in all i do like 64bit.

I'm pretty sure the G70 has been announced on this forum somewhere -- but since the search has been disabled I can't look it up now...

What do you guys think about creating a FAQ for ASUS Softwares? I'm having some difficult to find good descriptions about some asus softwares and i saw i'm not the only one with this "problem".

It would be a good idea, but truly I find myself only using Power App and the OLED App, everything else is either upgraded or disabled. Just reinstalled my os and boy I wish I did not. I had so many little tweaks that I was comfortable with, now I have to learn it all over again :p

Oh yeah, i know what you mean.. but that's my point, it's so hard to decide which things to use, what apps, what utilities.. i was hoping doing the faq to help other people.. i've search a lot about asus utilities and still missing "keyboard device filter", but i'm gonna install it. Yesterday i found out what "nb software kit" is: a roll up update package from microsoft and has something to do with usb. This is my first contact with vista, it's not that bad but...

I just finished an intense hour of driver installation on another fresh install. Asus has made it difficult to follow how each should be installed. A bit of trial and error has worked out, but that is after a couple of restarts. It would be nice if they gave an option to compile a driver cd to update the whole system in a live cd environment and to be able to choose what we want. Well, after learning my lesson of uninstalling an intel matrix manager (guess its important :D) my little guy is back up and running. Now to finish figuring out this startup mess...BTW I have found a new attansic driver that works great so far and is a couple light years ahead of the version on the asus site/cd. Also, realtek audio has a new driver out.

That's a good news! I'm going to get drivers from manufactors (am i speeling correctly?) and i hope everything works fine. What was your problem with Intel Matrix Storage Manager?

Apprently it does not like to be uninstalled; you have to do an inplace reinstall. What I did the second time was download the Turbo Memory exe and the matrix manager exe. Install Turbo Memory first, restart. Then since the version of the matrix manager included int eh turbo exe is outdated, use the standalone matrix exe and reinstall that. Bam, all up to date and working great.

BTW: Has anyone successfully restored from the recovery partition via F9? I get it to go through the recovery options, then it "recovers" then asks to reboot. I ended up using the the discs that came with the nb, but I vaguely remember the recovery partition's job to RECOVER the nb. Knowing my luck, I have corrupted it...

Ok, i'll do what you say. I'm installing my system right now, i'll install Turbo Memory first then Matrix Storage Manager, is that it?

Yep, you got it. I am posting from a palm, so when I get on I will post up where to get the new LAN driver, as it is way trickier to find than all of the others. I experience BSOD's due to the LAN card, so I hope this new driver is the ticket.

I was wondering wheather it is possible to upgrade my G2s with the Geforce 8700m. In theory it is, because it is sold now as the G2sn with the 8700 which is the same housing. Anybody can confirm this?

No, the card is soldered in and will not be able to take it. The only way to upgrade is to buy a G2SG or buy a Sager (preferable choice). The only laptop gpus that can be upgraded are MXM versions.

Well, I finally submitted my recurring BSOD to Asus and they claim that it is a video driver error. So I changed from 174.31 modded to non modded inf, now I have a locked clock, thus my temps will, or should, skyrocket...I am contemplating switching to another 174 series driver.

I'm using 174.93 btw, it's running fine. Only thing i have notice is that when i put the notebook to sleep it will turn off after a day or two, but i guess this is normal. I don't know much about Vista..

I wish I could keep running the 174 series, but apparently there are issues with it stuttering after a game or such. But thank you, I will keep it in mind incase I do just revert. One series won't go to auto sleep, another stutters, ....

No idea, sorry. Maybe try searching using the older driver numbers or something and get a 64 version. I decided to not tangle with 64 as I would spend way to much time tinkering, as if I do not already.

Do not worry, the english version, to my understanding did not explain it either. I know they gave us the little cable, but other than that, you are better off using the instructions from a capturing program.

    Recent issues and updates:

    1) BSOD:
If you are using modded drivers from laptopvideo2go some of the recent updated versions are causing Kernel Failures which result in a BSOD. I am using 177.41 with System Bios Version 300. I am getting occasional BSOD while using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Elements.

    2) Laptop's internal speakers:
Problem occurs when you plugin head phones and take them out at an angle or pull hard on it. There is a pin inside the Headphone Jack that is pressed and unpressed while inserting the headphone jacks. That is what triggers the Task Bar pop up message 'headphone jacks detected'. This pin is pressed permanently sometimes. One can try reinserting the headphone jacks and taking them out real slow. This might depress the pin.
Other cause is a failure of some module on the Mother Board itself. If thats the case then only solution is to get the mother board replaced through ASUS.
I recently had the internal speakers problem and got my motherboard replaced with ASUS.
PS: I am using OEM version of Vista 64 bit. Which means it is bound to internal hardware burn in addresses for Windows Genuine Verification process. for e.g. if you are using a Vista 64 bit OEM version and you disable your Wireless Lan card under device manager you will see a message after reboot windows is deactivated. You will need to re-enable your Wireless Lan card to reactivate the windows after reboot. I asked ASUS whether the installation of new motherboard deactivates the Windows Registration to my surprise he said NO "Vista does not use Nforce 4 or other motherboard based chipset to issue a Activation code." So getting new motherboard DID not De-Activate my Vista.

    3) ASUS Touch pad LOCK and EYE GLOW:
While at ASUS Canadian headquarters in Ontario i was getting my motherboard replaced. I asked the official ASUS tech to see if they can fix the Touch Pad lock button and Eye Glow. I told them that i am using Vista 64 which might be the problem (DRIVER).
2 days later motherboard was replaced and internal speakers were working. I will quote the Asus Tech "We hooked up our Vista 32 bit hard disk to your laptop. Touch Pad lock and eye glow both works. Problem is the Synaptics driver for Vista 64".

    Recommendations:

    1) Got to find a stable driver release (if using modded drivers)

2)Do not bother uninstalling Realtek drivers time and again cause this will not fix the internal speakers problem. It is a HARDWARE issue as mentioned above.

3)I have given up messing with Touch Pad lock and eye glow. Unless new Synaptics driver fix this there is no point in trying different ALPS or Synaptics driver...waste of time.

I suspect it's firmware version/HDD generation, but I'm not sure. Google should help (or another user). If it's firmware version, then probably the .3 will be somewhat faster, but that would be by no means guaranteed.

Hey all, I need to do some overall updating and maintenance on my G2S-A1 so I was hoping someone could let me know which graphics driver they believe to be the best to use right now. I know that I should go to laptopvideo2go.com but I'm just not sure which one to go for. Thanks in advance.

I use a 3.5 MM Cable to Red+White AV Plugs cable along with an option 2 plug to single stereo av plug (for old tvs) for my audio to tv applications, not what you asked but an alternate solution.

I took the plunge and installed Vista x64. System has remained rock solid.
So I have a 1gb turbo memory card installed and working. I also have a 150x 4gb SD memory card but when I go to the ReadyBoost tab i'm told another cache exists. Has anybody experimented at all to see which might be faster?

I've looked at a few sites for info including
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReadyBoost

    Any thoughts?

Actually I do have the same issue that raikey has pointed out with touchpad eye glow. I'm pretty sure I got all my drivers from Asus except the video card which I obtained here http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showforum=94

Hopefully we'll see a synaptics driver someday. My touchpad does seem to work though...... just no light.
[edit]I just installed the x64 driver at http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm and now I have an eye glow![/edit]

Having installed that latest driver as mentioned above by MKINASZ. The eye glow will work but the touch pad button next to POWER button in top far right corner still doenst work :-( plust you will have to disable the touch pad manually to turn off the eye glow.

After a year with the G2S I'm extremely disappointed.

One screen has already gone kaput (burnout into a white "bloom")
The new screen sometimes doesn't turn on, or it artifacts like crazy for awhile
The fan roars like crazy, even if I'm just on the internet or idling
    It's hot as hell
The GPU downclocks itself if I play too long

Now that I'm settled at home I think I'll give ASUS a call tomorrow, but I wonder what my chances are of getting a real fix instead of another stopgap. When I went to get the screen fixed, I told them about my GPU/heat problems and they just said it was the drivers. But now I know differently - the 8600M is faulty!

I would like to get a different but comparable laptop, but I doubt ASUS will do that. -_-

I sent back my G2S for some assistance on similar issues, cept the screen, and all they did was blow it out with compressed air...despite being already cleaned. They wrangled me on the phone but I kept at them to fix overheating, LAN error, etc...but no actual solution was found. I have learned to accept what I have and soon to move on. Good luck with your issues.

How much improvement with the 1GB Turbo Memory Card installed?
I have a 512MB turbo mem card, where's the socket located on G2S?

Raikay~ I try to installed the V64 with SP1 bundled together on my newly purchased Hitachi 200GB/7200rpm drive. Look at your post, seems SP-1 causes big trouble. Do you think it's better to have V64 without SP1?
Also it sounds like the drivers are another unknown for V64. Geez~
Maybe Mac is a better solution?

Windows should go for a simple architect eventually.
Vista is too bulky to run fast.

    Thanks!

Turbo memory makes no noticeable difference. Its purpose is to make up for slower systems (HDD, RAM). With 2+ GB of ram and a 7.2k drive, you will see nothing changed.

Vista is not too bulky to run fast. Please, do not generalize.

There are numerous guides on these forums to let you run Vista with minimal backround. Simply changing some of the Advanced Display settings will show a boost. In my own personal comparison, it pays to make the small changes.

    Hi guys,
I'm stumped. I've had a G2S for over a year now and it was working great with XP 32. I upgraded some hardware (4GB ram and a 320gb hd @ 7200rpm) and installed vista64. I have spent weeks tweaking the machine and I can't get rid of the **** DPC latency issues. I have all the latest drivers (via driveragent.com), the latest BIOS (300), I've tried 4 different nVidia drivers and seem to have the most success so far with 177.66. I've tried disabling everything I could in the device manager to no avail. I'm wondering if anyone else is having trouble? BTW, my machine is able to get a 4.8 game rating but it'll lag from time to time. The process explorer shows some big hickups for the DPC and the DPC checker will peak out from time to time. I also produce music and sometimes it'll crap out and show constant yellow bars in the DPC latency checker (you can just imagine what it sounds like...). Ugh... I was so happy with the machine until recently. I have no idea where the problem might be. Is it Vista, the graphics card, BIOS issues, chip issues? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    a.

    UPDATE:
I just installed the new nVidia drivers (178.15) for Vista 64 and there seems to be a slight improvement with DPC latency. But not that much. I'll get some huge spikes when I scale windows and move things around on the desktop. Seems to be a graphics driver issue or conflict. Grrr....
