The screen is a 15.4" screen. But are you talking about like the actual Height and Width of the LCD panel itself?

Yep, i was wondering about it's width and hight. I'm trying to work out if 1680 x 1050 will be too high for me, small text in particular.

it also has a 2.20gh processor, i believe gentech only offered 2.oo, 2.13, and 2.33 and replacing the cpu voids ASUS's warranty.

I ordered mine from Newegg, should be here in 3 days.

I have some questions about the bloatware on my new G1S and what the programs are for.

What is the ASUS Data Security Manager and what does it do?? Same for ASUS MultiFrame, Net4Switch, Splendid and Lifeframe.

yeah the egg is huge, they price gouge like crazy. After they got all there buys from there loyal customers and the people that dont know about smaller etailers like gentech ect.... they lowered the price down to compete.

Saw it for like 1800$ on a canadian site, but its sold out. I think they may have lowererd the price just to get hits on there site while its sold out and will raise it back up when they have some in stock....

You guys almost sound as if your complaning about a price drop :p

After extensive testing your g1s will never get full use out of 4gb of ram under vista 32 bit. There are articles all over the net about this. The notebook does post with 4gb however vista will never utilize more then 3gb. Price drop happen becuase asus are idiots and obviosly dont want dedicated dealers stocking their product. They rather have drop shippers who know nothing about any of their product. Morons. I am so pissed right now. Sitting on 30 units which are now worth 3000$ less. About to send them all back

Although it may be possible microsoft will or already has put a fix out for the 3gb limitation from the articles i read out there it seems to be an inherent issue with any 32bit o.s. The good news is that 64bit will have support for 4gb or more however i still dont know if your existing product key will ever work with 64bit if you manage to download or purchase a disk with 64bit os separately. i have heard yes

Yes this is true, the most I have ever seen anyone with 4GB been able to use with a 32Bit OS is 3.86GB. Using a 64Bit OS such as Windows Vista Business, Home Premium or Ultimate 64Bit or Windows XP Professional 64Bit will show and use the full 4GB, if I remember correctly, a 64Bit OS can recognize and use up to 16EiB (that's a whole lot of ram!). But I don't think any consumer PC on the market today can use that sort of ram ;).

Its amazing how every manuf and intel claimed inherent 4gb support on santa rosa. Nobody ever mentioned that microsoft may or may not comply

well 4gb is supported on santa rosa (thus why you see it on the bios) its the OS that has to USE the ram. You said it yourself 32bit has a limit on the amount of ram it can use.

the cure is a 64bit os. This is why I am ordering my OS seperate from my asus notebook, so that I can get x64. I dont plan on using 4gb anyways tho, 2gb will be fine.

As for what you said on the prior page, I heard word that NO the key is only for the os on that drivers disk, its not the same as a retail key that has privledges of both x86 and x64. Also you dont get the slip to send in to MS to get a free copy of x64 like you do with retail.

Its Asus way of forcing you to get Vista Ultimate for x64 is what it looks like.

Yes, it has Turbomemory. In fact, there's a patch for Turbomemory on the G1S download site. Intel Matrix Manager, or something like that.

TurboMemory is Intel's Robson technology. I was not able to find any spec sheet that confirms that the G1S has support for TurboMemory. (Support for nVidia TurboCache, yes, but that's a different matter entirely.) Can you give a reference that confirms that the G1S has support for TurboMemory?

    Thanks.

But even if a laptop has a Santa Rosa chipset, it can be sold without TurboMemory. It is optional on Compal's IFL90 for instance and is unavailable on the Lenovo T61 if you require a wlan interface. (No space for both.) Because TurboMemory does not come automatically just because a laptop has a Santa Rosa chipset, you'd expect a manufacturer and resellers to clearly show in the spec sheet that a laptop does indeed have TurboMemory.

Now can someone show something from Asus or a reputable reseller that specifically shows that the G1S has TurboMemory or not?

That's also what I think. I think the G1S does not have Robson and that Robson is not that advantageous. By the way, there's a discussion about the possible merits of Robson going on in this thread:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=127623

As you can see there, I'm pretty skeptical about the benefits.

yes, atfirst I was quite dissapointed as it sounded somewhat important as I fell into the marketing in Intels page, but reading from more experienced laptop owners around here, I gather its not a deal breaker.

If you have references with some hard stats please post them to that other thread I mentioned earlier. That would be helpful. I've written OS modules in my earlier life (but now I'm a Ph.D. student in religious studies... go figure!) so it is utterly clear to me that between adding 1GB of TurboMemory or adding 1GB of RAM, the latter is much preferable but I'm having a hard time explaining it.

I ordered an iRocks 9410-ES-B eSATA to eSATA/USB enclosure and a Seagate 3750640AS 750GB SATA II drive (total under $300) from eWiz. Insert the drive into the enclosure tray, power up enclosure, connect the included eSATA cable, go to Computer Management|Storage|Disk Management in Vista, assign drive letter F:, and format in NTFS. Works perfectly. 300 MB/s transfer speed. Backups, video, photos, etc., now live on the F: drive.

Nice to see something install without problems on Vista 64-bit.

Beware the current "fire sale" prices on Seagate FreeAgent external drives. They are SATA I.

Edit: Do NOT use the driver included with the enclosure. Vista has integral eSATA drivers.

Can you boot from the eSATA drive? Is there an option in the BIOS to boot from there? I'm intending to put FreeBSD on a eSATA drive so that would be a nice feature.

    Thanks!

Vista allows either MBR or GUID. I elected MBR. Haven't tried to load an OS, but Vista shows the eSATA drive as simply a "removable drive", so I think you will be able to boot from it.

Update 1: moved a 1.54 GB folder of docs and pdfs over eSATA II in less than 3 minutes to the external 750 GB drive.

Update 2: moved a 2.4 GB folder of .jpg photos over eSATA II in less than 2 minutes to the external 750 GB drive.

The 300MB/s thing is a joke. The 750GB HD would be lucky to get burst speeds in HD tune of 100MB/s. If you moved a 1.54GB folder over in less than 3 minutes you were getting 8-9MB/s transfer speeds.

Does anyone know if there are any 2.5" eSATA enclosures out on the market? A friend of mine was interested in getting one for his G1s.
