No updates have been released yet, check asus.com for updates.

One of the Asus "bloatware" tools turns it off. I turned it off then uninstalled the app that controls it. Can't remember the name of it, sorry.

Asus posted new drivers for the 8600M GT on their site. Asus is decent at keeping up with newest drivers, and the ones they have work well for me in several new games.

Hello I just bought the G1S and already having problems. THe green side lights keep blinking even with no programs on. Also when I boot up the computer it says CMOS time and date not set and tells me to press f2 to setup and f1 to proceed. Whenever I restart or put my computer on standby the time and date resets.....does anyone know how to fix this?

Well, this is not really bloatware so i wouldnt delete it

find and click on "ASUS Direct Console"

There you will have 2 options that you can adjust
    ASUS Direct Flash
    ASUS Direct Messenger

Both have on and off options

Ive played around with the side lights extensively and i think the lights are more vram influenced than dx9/10.
I think cpu load plays a fair bit too

They blink soooo slowwwly though. I wish it were faster. Like a rapid blinking then fading out then fading in rapid blinking, etc. That would give more of a feeling of speed. Or at least we should be able to customise the speed and frequency of the flashes.

So when most of you got your G1s what's the first thing you all did? Installed your own Windows or OSs? Or did you just stick with Vista and get ride of some of the bloatware? I was under the impression Vista wasn't 'great' for games ...

This the tricky part, try avoid brand names such as Kingston, because you never know which module they use on that batch.

So far only Micron module works, but the first Micron module we tested does not work so we special order a different Micron module, both Micron looks identical even the numbers on the chip.

My plan was to repartition so there is only one large one, and install XP on it. However due to time constraints I've left Vista on, and everything I need is working, so I am happy. I did uninstall a lot of the crap it came with though, but spent much more time installing and downloading stuff I do want.

What's the bloatware like isn't like super bloat is it? I rather not loose too much performance in games because of it.

Micron is the best, its like the NF4 DFI board all over again. It only liked "good" ram if you tried to put cheap stuff in it, it didnt boot (untill much later when they had multiple bios for it that let it run with other ram types)

mryerse, how would you go about reinstalling XP on the G1S? I've tried, but it didn't detect any hard disks during windows setup. Also, will the drivers for the G1S at Asus' site work under XP?

    Check this guide out.
    http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp

I think your problem is that there is only one partition so resize your vista partition and boot your xp disk again.

It has two partitions with lots of extra space on both; I just can't get to the screen that shows the partitions because windows setup says it doesn't detect and hard disks and forces me to restart.

Anyone had any luck nuking Vista completely and running XP only? I read that the best way to go about this was to get the Intel Chipset and Wireless drivers from the Intel site - and use the G1 drivers/ programs for everything else.

Anyone done this? Does everything work using this method?

(Otherwise I'll probably just nuke the recovery partition and install a copy of Vista Ultimate on my G1S when it arrives (in country - hopefully have it tomorrow!!))

Nuking Vista will nuke DX10, and consequently the 8600M's main point.

In case you missed the edit to my post about first impressions on page 15.

Uninstall Asus Splendid and go to zero gamma, 50% brightness, and 50% contrast in nVidia CPnl if you want a GREAT IMPROVEMENT in clarity of text, being able to see fill-in boxes on webpages, and color saturation. That leaves nVidia CPnl, Power Mgmt, and Mobility Ctr as controlling the screen. With Splendid (published by Macrovision, so it's an add-on), my screen lost settings even in a simple launch of Splendid.... without touching settings... so I uninstalled it and PRESTO, text is sharp and easy to read, looks like a Vaio notebook screen now.

    http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

has the latest drivers. Use the Download box in the upper left, input G1S and All. Click on G1S in the results screen.

Note that you can limit the list, once displayed, to Vista 32-bit (but all the current list is for 32-bit Vista). Some of the 32-bit Vista drivers work with Vista 64-bit, and others don't.... Vista will tell you. Some 32-bit drivers, like Asus Live Update, will load under 64-bit, but do nothing when you launch them.

Unfortunately, the current Vista 32-bit graphics driver update will not work with 64-bit Vista.

Im going for the first way, since I just ordered the acedemic vista premium last night. It has the x64 vista on it wich I plan to run.

Eather should work, in XP if you uninstall programs it usually leaves some small stuff behind like registry entries. I think vista is supposed to be diffrent tho.

    1. bloatwarre is all the extra software that comes with the laptop (eg. norton 60 day trial)
    2. 32bit is fine (some programs don't work on 64bit)
    3. Get rid of the crap software you don't need

    What?
Why would you advice to avoid kingston? they are not any better then any other major brand but also they do not manufacture the actual wafers neither do most brands. you can hit or miss with micron just as well with any other. The point it if you want a quality module and you want advanced replacement option directly from the manufacturer not just the vendor GO with kingston.

Kingston is hit and miss on picky mobo's it was like this with some DFI boards back in the day.

They are a good generic brand ram for running stock speeds. Definitly stay way from them for any kind of overclocking tho.

There is a good chance that future bios will allow kingston ram to work well with the chipset/mobo.

I think new PC's are slow to start up and shut down at first. After a week or so, it should speed up.

I am not positive though. Anyone else back me up? Or am I just wrong?

Time shouldnt change unless its running some sort of auto update program and each time your running the machine its installing updates it downloaded.

In most cases they slowdown over time because people tend to isntall to much stuff on there machines and its all running in the background.

Someone asked about the VGA drivers on Asus website... those are for the 8600M GT. Asus calls them VGA, but they include nvidia's latest release for this card, which is hopefully going to be updated soon.
