why might i be getting such high temperatures then? i get ~66 when just surfing the net and i get 70 when playing command and conquer generals and when i ran the counterstrike source video stress test i got ~80 (temperatures in degrees celcius)
now according to NHC my cpu is at somewhere between 45 and 50
i think that the rivatuner was monitoring the gpu temperature right? so are those normal temperatures for the gpu?
if anyone wants to help with the command and conquer problem, its probably just going to crowd this thread so i made a diferent one:

Yep normally for a CPU around 40-50 is good, when your are doing stuff, and unless your GPU has a different cooling architecture then ya around 40-50. For the F3SV it seems reasonable. Use PCWizard 2007 from cpuid.com. It will give better readings becuase it directly accesses the BIOS.
-
pc wizard said my temp was 49 and the nhc said 46 so thats pretty close, but where does pc wizard say the gpu temp? all i had was fan speed or something along those lines.
o yeah, and rivatuner said its like 66 -
-
just a note. after installing the 158.45 driver, the temp of the gpu while using the internet only, is now around 80c. up from the normal 70-75c using asus drivers. maybe thats the strenght of asus drivers for general use only and not for gaming. temps ataken at the same time of the day/night.
cpu temp seems to have increased by 5c also. from 50-55 using asus drivers. to 55-60 with v158.45
switching to the battery saver profile even when plugged in, seems to help lower the temp by up to 5c for both cpu and gpu.
ps; the fan went into high gear at about 82c. and it kept spinning at that fast speed stabilizing the temp of the cpu and gpu to about 80c. -
yeah i doubt that my problem is actually caused by overheating, i just cant see that being the problem, this machine is so cool even when it says its hot.
i think its a problem with generals cuz when i am playing css it says that my temp is 73 celcius but it never shuts that game down.
i would really like to fix this problem though, that is my favorite game so far. -

I wondering about If F3SV-A1
Really can do turbo cache or not
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16834220181
So if any of you F3Sv-A1 owners can go into the bios and check for me
I still debating between the 8600GS or The 8600 GT -
-
how do you tell if its working or not? cuz im pretty sure mine has it but i dont know if its doing anything because i have nothing to compare it to
and another question, the dvd drive can use both dvd-r and dvd+r right? -
silentnite2608 Notebook Evangelist
No not intel turbo cache Nvidia Turbo cache
http://www.nvidia.com/page/turbocache.html
I wonder if it has that. -
-
-
silentnite2608 Notebook Evangelist
Ok since it has that
can you run some test for me and see if any better with more memory to it? -
-
hey gautam, you said you had installed ubuntu right? its not working for me for some reason, i boot from the cd then i select the default option (something like boot and install ubuntu) but then my screen just goes black. I then tried the check disk for errors option but the screen went black too. and then i tried boot in safe graphics mode but the same thing happened. Did you use the 64bit version of ubuntu when you installed or did you use the 32 bit version? or did i overlook something else...
and i seem to have another problem. I am playing counter strike and it kinda freezes but the sounds play in a quick loop (about 1second of a loop) and then when i press ctrl alt del and bring up task manager there is a little bubble in the bottom corner that says the display driver has succesfully recovered from something (i dont remember what) ill see if i can get the exact error message if it does it again though.
alright it happened again, here is the error message "failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer"
how do you know what driver version to get? im at http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/vista and i dont know what version to pick, i want to see if getting a new driver will fix the problem.
im really starting to worry about my computer, i just got a blue screen with white writing that said stuff but i didnt have time to read it before it shut down. I got this scren just as i was entering a game in command and conquer generals online. im starting to think there might be something seriously wrong with my computer...
the only thing i can think of that might have done this would have been me shutting it off while windows was trying to load, is that a bad thing to do? -
You have to use the alternate cd fittersman.
-
really? that bites... now i gotta download another 700 megs :'(
-
-
i didnt do anything to the driver yet, thats what is confusing me. But i reinstalled vista using the recovery disk (i always have to do this right away when i get a new OS, i like to tinker with things ) so hopefully that will fix the driver issue, even though i didnt play with that, maybe it got affected somehow.
I would like to try these modded drivers though, does anyone know what version i need? (the ones from laptopvideo2go)
EDIT: nope, still get the BSOD even after the reinstall http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=2141723#post2141723 -

Will be waiting On results of Turbo cache.

I recently bought my laptop and one thing i've noticed that happens in many games no matter the graphic complexity is that there is a kind of skipping. It is not a drop in fps, rivatuner shows no drops, but sort of a rubbery stretch. I've read that 8600gs uses turbocache and i was wondering if that's the culprit. I'm running 158.45 laptopvideo2go drivers.
Also, my unit seems to be heating up a lot more than anyone's on this thread.
Overclocking pushes into 90s and i can overclock to 600/550. Anymore and the system locks up.
GPU:71c idle, 84-86c load.
OC'd to 600 550: 72 idle, 90c load -
and how is that driver working for you? i just installed the 165.01 and im going to go see how that works, see if it fixes my problems. -
PCMark05 comes from Futuremark, try it in google. ITs a free download.
-
Gautam, what is the exact driver version you are using? i just tried the 165.01 and i still got that serious error when playing c&c generals zero hour. Im going to try a new driver
im trying 158.45 right now, well downloading it
and does anyone else use firefox? it seems to be unresponsive alot on this machine along with a few other programs, im hoping this is just vista and not my computer because im going to try ubuntu soon and i hope that will work well.
and i cant find pcmarks05 using google, all i get is a bunch of pages that say "pcmarks05 took forever to download" and such, but ill look for futuremark
EDIT: yeah, futuremark sure found what i was looking for -
well, i think that the 158.45 just made it worse, i got the blue screen of death again and the game was kinda choppy but there was no actual lag, almost like it lost random frames or something, im going to try the 165.01 again but im going to go play css this time.
if anyone has a solution feel free to pitch in here
nhc wouldnt have anything to do with this would it? -
@Fittersman - I run the 158 drivers perfectly, as I noted before. You need to make sure to use the modded INF file.
-
i followed the guide step by step, the modded inf file is right beside the driver download link right? have you tried any games on it yet?
and im having problems with ubuntu again, i used the alternate install cd but after the install and i tried booting the OS up it showed me nothing again, how did you get this to work? is there a potential problem with screen resolution? i made a thread about this in the linux area, so hopefully someone there can get me an answer to this problem, vista is starting to get to me... -
-
-
I will tell you something. The 158 drivers really don't give a huge advantage over the 101 drivers. I suggest getting the latest 101 drivers and using them since they are more or less designed for the 8600M from the ground up. I know that the 158 drivers do well in gaming, but they are not a great overall solution. Using them I saw a drop in the already terrible battery life by about 20 minutes. They are modded by individual programers not affiliated with Nvidia, so even though they are good in some cases, more often than not you will run into trouble with them. The first time I installed them with the modded INF I got a BSOD until I adjusted some settings. The 158 drivers really only give you one or two extra frames when it comes down to it. So my suggestion is to download the most recent 101 drivers supporting the 8600m gs. For me they work great. And RivaTuner is good but I wil look for something better.

is this the proper driver that i am looking for?
[+] VGA
->Vista 32bit
Version V7.15.11.0119 2007/05/17 update
Description Graphics Driver
Graphics Driver for Vista
File Size 56.52 (MBytes)
i found it on the asus website, (i think this is the driver you are talking about) http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
ill download it and give it a shot, as it is newer than the one i have installed on my machine. right now i have driver version 7.15.11.108 -
Those are the drivers Im using I know they are not the newest but I naturally assume they are the best suited for my computer since they are desingned for both gaming and functionallity.

Hey Gautum I know you did praise this notebooks speakers in your review but you forgot to mention something about them...
THEY ARE FREEKIN AWESOME!
Dude these are the loudest and clearest notebook speakers I have ever heard. -
-
sesshomaru Suspended Disbelief!
I understand what Gautam says.. I have an extremely bad habit of dissing speakers bought by friends, who primarily focus on loudness, while I prefer clarity...
Of all the nbs I've seen in person, I find the pavillions' speakers the most acceptable.. -
-
I guess there is a problem with the sound card. The sounds are brilliant during the games.. but when I play any songs, the quality is soo awful (I use headphones most of the time). I definitely dont expect the quality of my walkman phone.. but its worse than my 2 yr old desktop PC

I've became a proud owner of the F3Sv-A1.
Fed up w/ Vista in a day, I decided to install XP on it, I mostly found all the instructions on this forum.
But I don't remember seeing if anyone Successfully installed XP w/ all the devices working properly.
I just need hope that there are XP drivers out there which fit this laptop, I don't want to revert to Vista because of missing device drivers.
Thanks -
i think i should be good once my internet gets better though, i need to get the new drivers on here so i can play some games -
Hi Max Damage. I managed to get windows xp working perfectly on my F3SV. It was a little tricky to find the right drivers and install them in the proper order though. I'll see if I can find time tomorrow to compile a list of the drivers and their download locations needed. I'll tell you now where to find ethernet drivers as I was unsuccessful looking online; they're on your drivers dvd that came with the system. The drivers (in the LAN folder) are compatible with xp =D.
Cheers -
Thanks dude, the list would be greatly appreciated. =

I just did some OC tests on the A1 stock hardware, but with partial XP, here are my results.
I used Counter-Strike Source Video Test
Res: 1280x800
Default CSS settings.

Texture Detail: High *
Shader Detail: High *
Water Detail: Simple reflections *
Shadow Detail: High *
Color Correction: Enabled *

100 FPS Core 500/Memory 400 (default)
126 FPS Core 620/Memory 400
135 FPS Core 620/Memory 500
According to RivaTuner
My Idle GFX temp seems to be ~73*C
During the last Video Test, the temp reached 92*C
Is the temperature within safe operations of this video card?
I do not want to kill it. -
well, that sounds a bit hot, personally i would lower it but im not sure if its within the range or not...
and, do you think you could do something for me? try playing the game (without overclocking or anything else) and see if it crashes on you. everytime i try to play counterstrike source it crashes within about 5minutes of starting a game, i dont know what the problem could be. I have tried 4 or 5 different drivers for the video card but none of them allow me to play for over ten minutes, it really sucks...
i think im going to phone asus tomorrow and see if they can do anything for me. -
I've played CSS and Garry's Mod for a bit, it didn't crash.
Only crashed when i OCed to 650/550
----
I'm on 101.34
http://www.opendrivers.com/freedown...ver-101.34-whql-windows-2000-xp-download.html
----
My FPS increased by ~50 from when i first played CSS on Vista on a stock driver.
Now it's the driver above on XPish -
-
i'm trying to buy either f3sv-a1 or b1 but i've heard news that due to its plastic exterior cover it has a heat dissipating problem and in the long run the computer tend to crash and get unstable a lot. Does anyone find these kind of problems with laptops with plastic covers? is metal cover laptops generally better than plastic ones?
-
There are drivers for both Vista and XP, I'm not sure the one I posted is compatible w/ Vista. http://laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/vista if it doesen't work, try lower 101 versions instead of the 150's 160's
-
We need to do a community based review of this series of notebooks, as I believe they are being overshadowed by the C90s and the G series notebooks.
As for video card drivers, I would also like to see a side by side comparison, say of the newer 101 drivers for vista and the modded 158 drivers for Vista.
I have not had any heat issues with my notebook, but take that with a grain of salt as I have only used it for Word and for Internet work, no gaming...yet. -
just a question for everyone, what video driver version are you running and how does it run games? (preferably command and conquer generals/ zero hour and counterstrike source)
