Okay, I'm having a really irritating problem which I believe resulted from a Windows update. For whatever reason, about a half hour after I reboot, my computer freezes. I can still move the mouse, but I can't click anything, use Ctrl + Alt + Delete, and the light above the power button stops blinking. I have to hard crash the machine and restart, only to be greeted with another crash a half hour or so later. These crashes are seemingly random, occurring when I'm browsing the internet, playing a game, or simply idling on the desktop. Anyone have a solution?

could be faulty memory. Lots of f3sv owners have purchased the laptop and installed an additional stick of memory. Sometimes it can be the case that the second stick is faulty, in which case it affects your computer in ever possible frustrating way.

    http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1565&page=1

page 2 will be of particular interest to you....use memtest 86+

hopefully..you will have a faulty stick of ram. that way its an easy fix..as compared to having to deal with asus tech support

faulty memory always gave me the blue screen error... this doesnt sound like faulty memory, this sounds like something else, but running memtest 86+ cant hurt, so you might still want to try that.

did this problem only start happening right after an update? maybe make a post in the windows section of the forum, someone there might be able to help you better.

Wanted to know if anyones tryed connecting the F3SV to a HD TV....

    DVI-HDMI cable

Any success let me know.... also I couldn't get my S-Video working, which I contacted ASUS about because I read on this forum that certain cables shipped don't work, but they just said "the cable was correct".

Just thought I'd pop back into the thread. I ended up purchasing an F3SA-1 with a free extra GB of RAM from NCIX, and picked it up yesterday. So far I'm pretty happy with everything, though installing the RAM was a bit nervewracking. I always seem to have to try a few times before I can bring myself to use the necessary force to properly seat the things.

Now I'll have to go about figuring out all the ASUS software and what to ditch.

Edit: Suppose I should put the stats in my sig.

To Fittersman: I also don't believe it to be faulty memory, as I can go for hours doing memory intensive tasks (like playing HL2, running multiple Firefox windows, whatever) and still not freeze, but probably twice a day if I leave it idol for like 15 minutes, it might freeze. I figured out that putting it to sleep usually helps, but once and a while it freezes in sleep also.

I just want to install XP and get rid of Vista to see if that is the problem, but I can't seem to find a guide for the F3Sv that I can make heads-or-tails of. If anyone can just direct me towards a straightforward, fool-proof step-by-step guide, I would be much obliged.

Coming from a zv6000 pavilion with an altec lansing speaker. I was disappointed that the speakers on my F3SV sounded like tin can. :( It lacked bass but the free Steelsound Headphones made the purchase worthwhile..

I was just wondering how to enable the SRS Wow Settings on Windows Media Player... Everytime I enable that feature, the sound/music stops playing and just plays jitter sounds... Any idea? Driver issue?

Hey guys, just got my F3SA over the weekend. So far i love it.
But i got a problem. I can't get the video to display 1680X1050 through DVI on my 22" external lcd. The max i can get it 1440X900! However I can get to that resolution on my analog connection. Any ideas???

I have updated to the latest bios on ASUS, as well i have updated to 7.11 catalist. ( this is all new to me!)

If anybody as any ideas that would be great.
And also the lappy came loaded with bunch of applications that seems to be slowing the system down, what can i get rid of to free up the system?? I don't want to un install anything important.

    thanks!

Mine (or should I say, my wife's) had a faulty memory stick. Found that out after running memtest 86+, my wife had been complaining about general instability on the notebook. Luckily I had already added a gig of memory, so I pulled out the crappy memory that ASUS had installed, bought a second stick of the hight quality stick that I found over at Newegg and everything ran fine again.

    Yeah. In fact, you should

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=91846

That's the go to thread for battery advice. I asked the same question back when I bought mine (First laptop). That thread should answer your questions. It's a little overboard for me (I'm not going to put my battery in the fridge every night) but adaptable and useful nonetheless.

Anyone got the built-in AverMedia A301 TV card working in Windows XP MCE?

I've already tried different versions of drivers and the MainConcept encoders that came with them, as well as installing InterVideo WinDVD 6 for its MCE-compatible codec. Even tried a fresh copy of MCE but real time TV is still choppy and unwatchable. System was so blogged down that moving the mouse to the "X" to close the MCE window took patience and skills.

Recorded TV playpack is fine and watching TV was fine in Vista. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey everyone.... I just downloaded the most recent graphics driver update from the Asus site and for some reason it won't let me unzip all the files to install it. When I try to I get the error:

An unexpected error is preventing the operation. Make a note of this error code, which might be useful if you get additional help to resolve this problem:

    Error 0x80004005: Unspecified error

    data1.cab
    Type: WinRAR archive
    Date modified: 22/05/2007 10:35 PM
    Size: 4.71 MB

It then gives me the options to try again, skip or cancel. Trying again does nothing, and if I skip I get the same error for the files nv3dHEB.chm and nv3dHUN.chm.

I tried to update the driver after skipping for the 3 files, and unsurprisingly it didn't work.

    Anyone have any ideas?!?

Thanks for anyone who tries to help! :)

for anyone installing XP on this laptop...the guide on page 21 caused some problems with my install, its the order in which you do things.

Just update your bios, and stick in the XP cd. You can grab all the drivers from asus's site, just get it for SJ, or some order model thats listed on page 21.

If you run into driver errors, for example: a driver that looks installed but doesnt work, you need to uninstall NAT or sounddriver.

I wasted A LOT of time trying to figure out my problem, thought i'd save anyone else the trouble!

Hi all, I just purchased a F3SV-A1 from Newegg and I'm quite happy with my purchase, my only concern is that my screen has a noticeably light leakeage coming from the bottom of the display, is this normal in this model or is just mine? I can see it very clearly when the screen is black.

    Thanks for any help.

Hey Fittersman, this is the best photo that I could take, the light transition from bottom to upper part is smoother on reality but the difference between brighter and darker parts is almost the same that you can look on the photo.

That's normal. I think most laptop screens have some light bleeding on the bottom, of course this varies from model to model. For example, My Asus G1s has a similar bleeding issue, however in regular use its not a problem.

Thanks for your answer, so maybe I need to get used to, but I think it's uncomforable when watching movies, playing dark games or things like that.

PS: On the Dell Inspiron 1520 I previously owned and returned (the static sound on headphones) the light was very less noticeable...

i find that it all depends on the angle you have the screen at. try tilting it forward until the bleeding reaches the top of the screen, its just a small adjustment (on mine anyway, maybe 5 degrees or something)

well... since nobody has any problems or anything ill give a tip :)

i find that the drivers on the asus site are not even close to comparable to the ones offered by the companies that actually make the hardware. I updated both my sound driver and my wireless driver from realtek and the intel site, i find that my audio in game is much better and i have slightly lower pings.

just thought some of you might find that useful.

Hey all I am back and ready for action. I have started a smaller thread for common issues. Let's keep this one for solving individual issues. I have taken Fittersman advice and have updated all my hardware drivers except for the video card to maunfacturer drivers, and performance increases vary from what hardware you are using. I find it useful for the wireless especially since the Asus drivers cause random dropped connections. For the Light Leakage on the screen, it is common for a black screen to have that kind of light leakage on an LCD. Whats important is how it looks when you have a picture up. I find that the Lighting is perfect, but I am experiencing some dead pixels which I will get serviced soon.

Well, I finally managed to downgrade (well, upgrade) to XP, and the performance is much, much better. Starting up/shutting down is much faster, and putting the computer to sleep/waking up works with ease.

I'm still very much disappointed with the video performance with this laptop, which was one of the initial reasons I decided upon the f3sv. I know that there are several laptops for under 1000 that outperform this laptop, even though their spec's don't appear better than mine.

I love the F3sv, don't get me wrong, but it's a bit large for me, and I think I want something that is more friendly on the battery life and portable. The m1330 was on a super sale today, I got it pretty much loaded for around ~ $1000 USD.

See what I have in my signature? I got that for $1200, and a free $200 gift card. Once I sell off the gift card, the notebook will cost around $1000.

I got free overnight shipping and 4% off through using Dell credit (which I'll pay off in full). I got 8% off via EPP and Dell was taking $800 off XPS systems. I got a 3 year at home warranty, and I got 1 year of free Lojack. There was also a coupon which stacked, but it shouldn't have, and it took off another $100.

    :) :D

Im using an external lcd monitor connected to my F3SV-B3 laptop, my question is how can this laptop detect on boot up the external lcd display and turn off the asus screen and display it on the external display. I have been clicking the Fn+LCD icon everyday and it's getting tiresome...

Any way around that? thanks in advance!

btw, my old HP pavilion can auto detect the external lcd monitor.

You mean that I am going from a 8600GS (current Asus) to a 8400GS? Yeah, that's a significant downgrade, but I think for my very scant to zero gaming, the 8400GS is fine, and I really need a smaller & lighter notebook rather than a gaming machine.

LOL, I am thinking of selling this Asus F3Sv and going for a smaller notebook with a worse graphics card since my gaming is occasional if at all. I really only need it for programming, web design, extreme downloading, and university, so I am thinking of going 13 inch or smaller. If not I will just wait out the couple of years and sell this one off and buy a smaller one later.

No its a program, just google it and you will find it, pretty popular
i dont know much about other than just fussing arround with it until i got what i wanted. There is an option in there that let you start windows with watever the set up u wanted.

Ya i just saw the dell today, man that thing looks sexy! Ya it is worth it!

FUnny how you say that, cuz i m in the same boat, now that i got my f3sa, kinda wish i have something smaller. The video is just way too overkill since i barelly game

    Hello everyone,

I just recieved an ASUS f3SV for Christmas today and I have to say- It is stunningly gorgeous compared to my old HP here. I'm very proud of it. Anyways... I have one beef with this laptop here... ITS VISTA...it only has 1 gb of ram... which is a slight problem... But I would like to be able to have one of my hard drives have say, 100gb for XP and gaming purposes (I am a very avid gamer)... and have about 60gb on the other hard drive for vista, That side would be my business and work/internet side.. Any suggestions? I have tried to revert the WHOLE thing back to XP from Vista with only having an XP disc and I can say from my experience that that does not work. Asus doesnt make SATA XP drivers for our laptops for some reason ( the F3 Series) Any help or advice would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! I love this laptop alot- it would be great if I could get it to work the way I want it to.

    Thanks,
    Aubrey

howdy, since u guys are all F3 owners....i thought that this would be the best place to get some help!

My F3SV has been shuttin off by itself and the blue screen of death has been poppin up. i restored my whole computer and i still got the same problem. I have TWO RAMs installed, a 1GB with the original ASUS and a 2GB stick which i upgraded. When i remove the 2GB, everything goes fine and my computer doesnt turn off....but when i put the 2GB back in everything screws up again.....

so...are there any programs that'll let me test if my RAM is screwed up? can this possibly be smth else? im sure that its not an OS or software problem...so would it possibly be a hardrive issue? any other suggestions? thanks alot!
