do all NA u6s have 3.5g cards?

installed 3g watcher from the driver disk and it says no device found.
is that because i dont have the sim in there or is that because I dont have the 3.5g card in the computer?

this is pretty disappointing as i thoguht it had it

Hey I was about to reformat this computer, until i noticed someone mentioned this thing has a hybrid drive. Does that mean flash & a regular spinning HD? Also I noticed 3 partitions, the primary (unnamed), the VISTA OS, and Data. Usually the 1st partition has the "restore" data (basically a ghost image of what the computer came with from the factory). I usually delete all the partitions and creat one big one w/the OS. Is there a special way to handle the hybrid drive?

I am still bothered by the screen, too much white and not enough black color. Today is the first day back to school and my friend's sony looks a lot blacker than this Asus. My old toshiba looks even darker than my friend Sony, dark and glossy.

was at CES show yesterday, the Asus Lamborghini Mini, I drooled over it, looks exactly like the U6 but with better leather quality and better screen, the screen is darker than the U6.

heh, I can't remember, the graphics were so pretty but lagged so bad. I'm not really all that worried about that since I'm not using this as a gaming system like I did with my dell.

btw, do you have the X1 from bb as well?

    Hey fellas,

The camera on XP is an easy one. Just manually install the vista cam driver. The driver is NOT ONLY for vista. If the one off the DVD doesnt work, go to the u6 download area at support.asus.com.tw and just get the current vista cam driver. (certified with chicony cam, can't speak for the MVI cam)

    Best of luck

Does anyone know how to get XP to install on the U6? Setup blue screens - I'm guessing it doesn't like the SATA drive, and likewise it will not detect a HDD in the machine. How did people get around that without a Floppy drive? Any tips would be most helpful.

Edit: Nevermind, I just found the BIOS setting "SATA Operation Mode" to "Compatible". Doh. Hope this post helps anyone else like me.

Any1 knows where are the memory slots are?? Are both slots underneath the laptop?? Since 4gb of ram is relatively cheap, I wanted to upgrade to good high quality 4gb of ram and just wanna to know if both slots are accessible from the bottom panel? 2gb under vista is kinda sluggish. I will run 64-bit once I can upgrade to 4gb

For some reasons, I cannot get the bluetooth stack software to install under windows xp pro with SP2. I installed it after wireless console software but it keeps asking to plug the device in. Any1 has any ideas how to get this to install??

    EDIT: NVM
I got it to install by toggling on the wireless console switch. Now what I really need is the crack to patch the trial period.

OK, I have sucessfully installed Windows XP without a hickup
I will give you guys a summary: Download all the drivers posted in this thread on page 5: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=2817084&postcount=42

When done installing with XP, install Intel Chipset driver immediately, then NVIDIA VGA right away so you dont have a slow frame by frame lag while you are going to install other stuffs
Then you can install ATK drivers by directly the hardware installation to the ATK_DRV folder. After that, install all the ATK utilities. Install Wireless Console 2 before installing bluetooth stack. And when installing bluetooth stack software, at the point when it asks for plugging in the device, toggle with the wireless control function to turn on and turn off bluetooth by pressing Fn and F2 buttons. Keep pressing those 2 buttons till it detects the hardware. And install Realtek HD audio driver before installing Motorolla modem or else the sound will not work. For TMP driver, just direct it to the driver folder instead of running setup file. The fingerprint driver, I just let windows find it online and it found the driver for it. Then you can install the rest of the drivers such as realtek ethernet, Intel wireless driver, etc....Now I dont have any exclaimation marks on my device manager at all. All drivers are installed correctly. Good luck guys, it runs much faster under XP and you can leave the rest of junkie softwares out as well when you are doing this. I dont have to install splendid color, no tmp trusted software, no crappy norton internet security, no asus liveupdate etc......You guys get the point. Anyway, good luck

    Cool!
Just 2 questions: did you get the camera to work alright?
And, mind getting some benches for comparison (trying to see if it's worth it to switch OSes). I found benches between vista and xp on higher end machines, but nothing on a system similar to ours...

oh sorry about that, was busy. I just checked, the driver was a default driver from XP with SP2, so the image is inverted. But I dont really need the webcam anyway. So everything is working great under XP. My bluetooth mouse works great, Video Card is fast for some light gaming and now I can use it to print lecture using school wireless print server since the school only supports XP and not Vista. I think I am set with this laptop for a while until I feel the urge for the newer Penryn processor and darker LCD screen.

did you guys see if your sim card slot actually works?

mine doesnt have the hardware because i check under hardware management and nothing is there. but the slot is there and the card goes in and out

ALSO!!! my laptop shut down after booting up due to overheating.... i had to tap the computer sideways couple times for the fan to work...
has anyone else had the fan stop working???

1 more question, does running sata in compatible mode reduce performance?

Ouch, something must be logged in your fan or it's just a bad fan. Mine runs fine without a problem and never even gets hot. Kinda surprised about it too. You should be able to get Asus to replace the fan if you complain enough.

From my understanding of Sata in compatible mode (PATA) there is therotically a speed boost but it's not a huge thing.

I think he means the speed boost is in enhanced mode.

About the fan, I would get it replaced... running with a bad fan is very dangerous.

Dose the all U6S models have an included HSDPA modem/card? I have installed 3G Watcher from the driver disk and it says no device found!? As I have the SIM card in there I guess it is because I don’t have the 3.5g modem build in? If it is the case than it is pretty disappointing as I thought it had it :(

Maybe if you have an option to disable it in the BIOS, you might be able to tell that it is there.

Or someone with that hardware on their machine could tell you how it looks in the Control Panel.

What I meant is that if there is an option in the BIOS to disable it, then you can be sure you have it. :) If you don't find it, you might have it or you might not have it.

If you have installed the drivers for all the devices (you have no yellow exclamation marks in your Control Panel) and none of them is HSDPA then you probably do not have the hardware in your configuration.

I have now tried with a 3g sim card on my XP pro install, everything worked without problems right from start.
(I used drivers from my post on page 5)
Check that Sierra adapter is installed and working (se attached picture) and that the wireless switch is on.

One question about spdif (digital audio).
When I connect optical cable it feels like the U6s (Realtek HD Audio Manager) thinks that it's a analog cable and I can only chose between speakers, line out and headphones. Sholdn't it be a spdif symbol (se attached pic)

Also S/Pdif isn't shown in "Windows volyme" (you know the speaker symbol)
Strange thing is that I get 48 Hz sound anyway (optical) but how can I change to 96Hz?

Om my old ASUS W5 the spdif is shown in "windows volyme manager" and in Realtek Audio manager i could choose between 48 Hz and 96 Hz spdif digital out.
Same cable and reciver is used..

mikaelnilsson Which 3G provider do you use? A try to found only SIM card or modem with it at Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile offices, but everywere for selling only solid 3G modems (usb, pcmcia, express-card) without removable sim-card.

Your only choice will be AT&T, since T-Mobile still doesn't have a 3G network up yet and all the other players are not on GSM. All AT&T sims on a monthly plan should allow access to their 3G network, but you'll pay a ridiculous rate if you don't subscribe to an actual data plan.

The last time I went into an AT&T store, they rep couldn't figure out how to just sell me a sim. That may have changed. The alternative is to buy a Blackberry or smartphone with a data plan and just put that sim card into your U6. You'll want to be really careful, since I don't know if using the sim card in your U6 counts as "tethering" your phone to a computer. That's going to cost extra.

Where are the updates?? Seems like Asus is so slow on updating this lappy comparing to their other product lines. No updates doesn't mean this lappy is perfect. I constantly check asus website and all I found in the latest updates are those manuals.

No kidding, I haven't seen any updates either and their Asus Update software doesn't even work either. Lol, lame. Oh well, why do you need updates anyways? Everything should be working fine.

My only complain about the laptop is when I watch a movie the quality isn't very good. I don't think the LCD can keep up with the video card's refresh rate.

I feel the laptop is kinda slow even I am running XP with the latest drivers. Slower than my old Toshiba Tecra with T5500 processor and 2gb of ram with dedicated video card. I always get the hard drive lag even I disable sleep mode on hard drive and monitor. I am not even running resource hog system security softwares. I only run Kaspersky. Defrag hard drive weekly and I keep everything minimal. My OS Hard drive has 95% free space so I dont load much softwares on it and I removed all the startup programs as well. And this is plugged in not even running on battery and I use the performance setting instead of power saving mode. I doubt I have any spywares since I dont install any freewares. I also see my hard drive light flashing even I am not doing anything and kaspersky is not even scanning the system. Oh well

OMG that kind of defeats the purpose of a kensignton lock, right? :)

ghettocowboy, maybe the indexing service is indexing the HDD? You might want to have a look at my XP Install guide and/or Vista optimization guide for how to streamline your installation. I suspect many of your problems are due to bloatware and too many services running.

Edit: I see you've done quite some streamlining yourself... maybe look into a faster HDD?

I personally think this laptop is as fast as my G1S-A1 was, save for 3D performance....
