My bro brought me U6S from Taiwan's computer show. The quality is exceptional. The leather texture is nice and durable. I can't believe the nb is so light even with 3-cell battery attached. A 6 cell battery also comes with the nb which is a very thoughtful from Asus.

I know exactly what you are saying, with the 3-cell (leather) which is not offered in the states at this time, the notebook is pure stylish. The 6-cell is certainly more practical with 2+ hour battery time. How do you guys like the screen quality?

Teeny tiny BackSpace, Enter and Shift keys :)

Does the second picture contain a hidden advertisement for Sony cameras? :D

Third, I don't like the large bezel. Looks like wasted space to me... But I suppose it's complicated to make it smaller -- even so the keys are so small.

The large bezel bothers me too, but I guess it provides space for the camera in a manner that is uniform and balanced (i.e. bezel width is equal on all sides).

They aren't that small - you get used to them pretty quickly. The W7S has the same keyboard, except in a different colour, and I didn't have much problems with it.

And nice pics! The U6S is one of the sexiest notebooks on the market atm, it just looks so hot....The chrome is a nice touch, though I do agree about the thicker bezel. Thankfully that isn't as noticeable on the U6 as it is on the F9, due to the lighter colour of the bezel (silver as opposed to matte black).

Since it's my first nb.... I dont realize the bezel is that large.

To EXcaliberPC, -I have been using this nb at least 2 hours per day and I feel the screen is clear and bright. it does not hurt my eyes.

I received mine, I like it. All the Pros have been mentioned but the cons haven't mentioned much. Since you asked about the quality of the screen, here is what I think:

I think the screen has too much white and not enough black and thus I see too much gray. I have toshiba Tecra M9 and Toshiba Satellite A105-S4364 and both of the screens produce absolute true black color and thus the movies are much nicer on the toshiba screen. I played with the splendid color technology and all it did is increase the hue color. I saw a sony 11.1" with back led display and it produces true black color and I was hoping the back led display on the U6S is gonna be as good. Asus is known to increase the contrast ratio by increasing the whiteness and thus the screen is too much white. All the windows toolbar and other icons, I see grayish whereas on the toshiba, I see black color. Wish Asus screen should produce more black color.

Other things: the buttons on the touchpad is too stiff. Asus installed too many stuffs in there especially stupid Norton Suite, I hate Norton, it sucks all my system resource. And for the Hard drive, it splits into 2 partitions, I hated it. I am gonna redo the whole installation the way I wanted but first I gotta go download all the drivers to make sure all the XP drivers are available.

Thank you for your input, we agree the touchpad is pretty but very stiff. The Sony 11.1" you mentioned, that's the TZ series, which we didn't think the screen looks as sharp as the U6.

The Sony 11.1" back led might not be as sharp, but it produces black background. The Asus U6S has grayish background and thus not so appealing to the eyes. Because the Sony was able to produce black color and thus it has better color production. Any1 has a customized color profile on the asus splendid color for the U6S?? I am too lazy to play with it. Currently I am toning down the brightness to 7800K, but I haveen't played with the RPG settings yet. The whiteness is too much and thus the color looks washed out. Any1 has the XP drivers for all the hardware for the U6S??? All I saw on Asus is the Vista Driver. My school wireless print server only works on XP and older, it doesn't work with Vista.

BTW, I hooked up the laptop to my 58" plasma screen and play an HD clip that I captured at 1080i, it looks so much better than the Asus Back Led light. The Asus screen is too whitish and because of too much white, the color looked washed out. On the plasma screen, it looks so much better because plasma can produce black color and no grayish color seen on the plasma screen.

And Of course no sound out of HDMI port, oh well. The speakers on the laptop is kinda weak, not even near those harmon kardon on my Toshiba, and not as good as those Altec Lansing on those HP. But when connecting to external speakers, they produce decent sounds. So the sound quality out of the sound card is decent. I will write more about it as I go along.

So far I am impressed with the design, sleek and elegant/classy looking laptop, light weight

This laptop is good for multimedia if connected to an external display since the 12" is kinda small for watching movies and it doesn't produce vivid color as I would expected from a back led screen. Too much white and not enough black as the only problem. My future screen is gonna be the New Dell 3008 30" LCD since it has HDMI out and 100% color gamut and uses S-IPS panel as oppose to TN or S-PVA panel. I love S-IPS panel. My next project is to look for a USB tuner that has Clear QAM built in so I can watch digital cable on this laptop connected to the Dell 30" LCD. But for portability usage and business, you cannot ask more for this laptop.

Any1 has custom setting for splendid color?? I dont want to spend time to calibrate the display. If you've been playing with the custom settings, please let me know your RBG settings. Thank you

Which software did you use?? I use the Asustek AsusDVD, a strip down version of PowerDVD. I am gonna install Purevideo and PowerDVD Deluxe Ultra tomorrow and retest it.

As far as the color washed out screen, I lower the color temperature to 7500K and increase the RBG to 4, Now I can see it a bit better, I get a bit more black color by lowering the color temperature.

In asus pre-installed software, Realtek HD Audio, set the default to HDMI output. You will hear the sound from your TV.

My power adapter is gigantic.... can you post a picture of your? i think they exchanged it at the store... It's 19v 4.74A.
I'm going to attach a picture of mine on the side of the old from a asus s5n adapter.
I'm crazy with this power adapter... It looks like it's from those old laptops that had desktop processors...

yeah, the setting is in Realtek audio manager, make sure you use HDMI as default audio out to get audio out from HDMI port.

Arggg, I still play with the screen setting. I might have to invest in a hardware calibrator. This back led display is as worse as a dell inspiron screen, too much white. I used my friend Sony 11.1" TX series last night, the color is much more vivid because the screen can produce black color. You see vibrant color where as the U6S color is washed out because the background over flooded with grayish background. If you guys do not know what I am talking about, I am not complaining about the sharpness of the screen, the screen is sharp. Just that the color is faded because it produces too much white on the screen for high contrast ratio, pseudo contrast ratio. Asus use pseudo contrast ratio by increasing the whiteness and thus the ratio of white to black is high and thus having high contrast ratio, but paid at a great price by doing this. I see everything is Grayish. And the Sony SZ 13.3" back led is also much more vivid than this 12" back led because it is so important that LCD screen can produce black color. Everything I watch on this screen, the color seems to be washed out because the screen is too grayish.

Tried to installed XP last night on one partition of the drive and do a dual boot. But did not realize that U6S only comes with the recovery disc and no stand-alone vista. So I have no control over the vista installation when using the recovery disc. Now I am really frustrated and took over 2 hours to run the recovery disc. I uninstalled all the junks like Asus Protector manager, Asus Live Update, All the Asus Accessorizing softwares including Splendid color and everything else except the drivers. I am gonna uninstall Norton next, POS, drains too much system resource and load Kaspersky on it. So I guess I am gonna be stucked with Vista on this laptop for a while till I get myself a retail copy of Vista if I want to do dual boot.

I guess I have to go back to desktop Realm. Just have to wait till Intel Launches their Q95XX Quad Core processors. I sold my Desktop with E6400 Overclocked to 3.7Ghz air cooled and Dell 3007FPW-HC screen

Well although I have no problem with the screen myself except for a bright dot (which Asus is going to replace completely free of charge), I guess you get what you pay for.

Gonna install XP on mine when I get it back... can we use any ATK drivers or are they laptop specific? Also, did you need to install any XP hotfixes that are not found on windows update?

I have SP3 Candidate release so I don't have to do any of those. I just installed XP and leave all the drivers not installed till more drivers released. I did not try any other ATK and stuffs. I know you can get the video card driver easily. Don't know about blu-tooth and wireless card driver. Sound card is easy, Mass storage driver, just download intel chipset driver. I don't even care about touch pad and fingerprint drivers. So lemme know where you get those drivers and if it works. Of course I would rather to be on XP and if I ever need vista, I will do dual boots but I have no use for vista at the moment. My school wireless print server only works with XP and win2k

I woulnd't complain about the screen if I haven't used other latpops before, but I have used so many laptops before this one and thus I see a big difference and thus the whining. I have high expectation for back led display since I saw how good it looks on other manufacture screens and the one on U6S is not even near it.

I think the LCD is breaking in, the color is a bit better. I left it on for the last 3 days. But I have to lower the color temperature to a warmer lower temperature: 7800K

I'm thinking about buying the U6S-A1, but a few things holding me back just slightly:

    1. Glossy LCD - I've gotten used to the 'brightview' type displays, so I wonder if the U6 screen will be bright and brilliant enough, to what I'm used to. Is this an issue for anyone?

    2. Thinking of buying from btotech.com, as they can upgrade memory and HD. Any concerns there? What other resellers should I consider?

    3. I understand the default config has a hybrid 160GB HD, if I upgrade to the 200GB 7200 RPM Drive, would it also be hybrid? My assuption is "no", so will there be any noticeable difference in performance, better or worse?

    4. If I upgrade to 4GB RAM, selecting Vista Ultimate 64Bit, what is everyone's experience with 64bit Vista? Will I wish I had stuck with 32bit?

    Thanks all.

    2. I find that it is usually best to buy ensemble notebooks without any upgrades from the cheapest place possible and upgrade yourself. Unless you want a CPU upgrade which will be useless in this case. Barebones are another story.

    3. My guess is that it would be faster but I'm not sure.

    4. I don't feel like Vista Ultimate 64 is ready for mainstream use yet. Keep in mind that also buying ram later will always be cheaper and it has been dropping in price like hell. Also, I wouldn't use x64 until more apps are x64 exclusivelly cause I hate managing 32bit and 64bit directories and registry entries

I tried to decode a 2gb VC-1 hi-def file, the system was struggle playing it, I get frame by frame play back using PowerDVD Ultra Deluxe with NVIDIA PureVideo Installed. But I updated the video card driver to 169.28, it plays much smoother. So if you have the stock video card driver out there, go to Laptopvideo2go.com and download the latest drivers for your video card

I have now installed Win XP. And used drivers from my post on page 2.
    I got everything working exept:
    1) Fn + F9 (dissable touchpad) doesnt work
    2) Camera and Power4 gear button doesent work
    3) Only got 3 of 4 GB ram shown in WinXP, on startup 4 GB is found (I think this is a limitation in WinXP)

PS's are rated for amps and wattage, and tend to be specific per model/manufacturer. I'd be wary of 3rd party PS that might even look like they have same specs, as using one with non-OEM specs could cook your battery or MB and the latter is expensive to replace (plus not covered by warranty if you cook it that way).

Grr, damn those small screens with tiny pixels! I sent my screen in for a bright dot and it's so small the techs say they can't see it and they won't replace the screen... Looks like I'll have to sent them a damn magnified picture. Do you guys think they'll send a screen in or do I have to send the laptop over there again -.-?

    mikaelnilsson,
    1) Fn + F9 requires that you have installed all ATK drivers and utilities. There are like 3 I think + synaptics driver.
    2) The camera doesn't work at all?
    3) 3GB is a limitation in any 32bit OS.

after i log onto my vista and splendid loads, the screen turns off and tursn back on. also when i close the lid (i set the action to do nothing) and i open the lid, the screen turns on but then it blinks after (goes black and comes on again)

also, when i start the computer and log in, the resolution is 1024 X 768 not 1280 X 800

how do i fix these 2 problems?

(also, when i tried to instal xp sp2 cd, it cant find any harddrive, is this because of the sata drive?)

Are you on the latest NVIDIA driver?? Seems like Video card driver issue/setting
For the XP installation, go into the CMOS and on the IDE setting, switch from enhance to compatability. I dont know if it works for XP installation because I have a custom made XP where I slip stream intel matrix mass storage driver into my XP Pro Disc with SP2. But give it a try

btw, what is other ppl's 3dmark06 scores?
