I did that months ago and my wireless still kept dropping. Having to fix ASUS's bad quality control myself jsut shows how bad their standards are.

I bought an F8VA-B1 in August. It's now April so I feel I've had enough time to pass judgement on both that laptop and ASUS - here it goes! I was pretty happy with my purchase at first - until I realized how shoddy the build quality is, how bad the driver support is and how badly designed the laptop itself is.

Vista was unstable so the first thing I did is get rid of it to replace it with XP Pro 32bit. I'm pretty serious about music production and it's one of the main reasons I bought this laptop: it had the fastest CPU I could afford at the time, and CPU is what matters to run VST instruments. Vista is still pretty unsupported when it comes to music software/high speed audio so I HAD to install XP.

It was a nightmare. Despite the (pretty good) guides I found on here, it never really got EVERYTHING working "well". For example, some of the hotkeys don't work (wireless on/off, etc.), the fingerprint scanner doesn't work properly, etc.

Once that was done, the laptop couldn't even do what I bought it to do. The widely used M-Audio FireWire sound card I had didn't work properly with it. Even with the best TI chipset FW expresscard out there, it messed up after a minute of ASIO use. I bought a new soundcard from another brand at a cost of 300$+ to solve this. This soundcard worked, but I had audible glitches/stuttering every minute or so. This was due to HUGE DPC latency spikes because ASUS put the FW and Expresscard slots on the same IRQ (which cannot be changed) as a bunch of other stuff. Turning off the wireless connection (whcih I can't do with hotkeys) alleviated this problem. However, that's hardly a proper fix. That was my first sign of a poorly designed/built laptop.

I could list a hundred poorly designed things on this laptop. For example, the network jack in the back is placed under the hinge, which makes it near-impossible to press the plastic thingy on network cables to pull them out. So I can't use wireless AND using network cables is a painful process! The LCD panel has the worst viewing angles, backlighting, colour reproduction and brightness I have EVER seen on a laptop. It looks bad from nearly every angle, and the black is FAR from black. If I didn't have an external I would never be able to do any graphic design. It looks worse than my dad's 550$ Lenovo laptop.

In fact, that Lenovo laptop is what made me realize how crappy this ASUS is. His laptop cost 550$ and the build quality is probably 50 times better than the F8VA-B1. The hinge is solid whereas my F8VA's hinge is REALLY wobbly now (probably 3mm of play).

Let's see what other design flaws I can think of after this time:
-The click on the F8VA's trackpad is HORRIBLE. WAY too loud.
-The trackpad is too close to the keyboard and it's easy to touch by mistake.
-The webcam requires incredible dexterity to flip around
-The rubber feet under the laptop are held with cheap glue and one of them has fallen off
    -etc.

At some point, this computer started getting really sketchy:
-The keyboard only responds to one key press at a time (no gaming for me, more than 1 arrow doesn't wrok...only responds to the first one pressed).
-The CPU temperature passes 100 degrees C during gaming
-The HD temperature passes 55 degrees C while I render stuff...or even watch streaming video in bed
-The CPU idles at 85 degrees if the computer is on my bed (fan not blocked)
    -Fans are loud
-E-SATA is slower than USB2.0 on this laptop
-Freezes (complete lock up) randomly during low-CPU tasks

Recently, it stopped booting at times (pressed power, then battery light would go on and it wouldn't start). After 20+ presses it eventually worked.

The wireless no longer works properly. I'll be connected to the network and then any web browsing will no longer work (but MSN might for a while, then drop). This is on any network. The connection strength also varies seemingly randomly, and often drops where other laptops don't.

Basically, I can't think of ANY redeeming features on this laptop, other than price. It's poorly built, poorly designed, badly supported and ugly.

In case you're wondering, my laptop has been shipped to ASUS for warranty service. When it comes back, the first thing I"m gonna do is get rid of it. The second is to buy a Macbook Pro.

I used to like ASUS but after 4 TERRIBLE motherboards and this laptop, they've lost me forever.

I've had my F8Va for about 6 months now. Its the best laptop I ever owned. Although my Dell XPS lappy is so much more powerful it wasnt a viable instrument for traveling since Im on a plane quite often for work.

14inches is the perfect size. Although I would opt for a 13, but not enough power. I heard of the little monster F6Ve but the screen rez just kills it for the power it has. Once it has a 14x9 screen I will definately cave.

    Here are my specs:
    ASUS F8Va
    14.1" WXGA+ HD 1400x900
    Core2Duo T9400 2.53GHz
    4GB DDR2-800
    ATI HD3650 2GB VRAM w/ Hyper Memory

Still a beast of a computer 6 months down the line and one of the top 3 fastest processors that I know of. Good for gaming, HD videos, and just about anything you throw at it. And love the 2 year warranty which is more than enough if I need to upgrade.

Hey, I've been looking at the F81Se-X1 notebook on newegg but there isn't a thread about it here in the Asus section and it's not talked about on Asus's website. I've read posts about this before but everything will still be the same right, like the warranty and everything? and if anyone has this model, it would be awesome to hear about it. thanks

NewEgg warranty may only be 1 year instead of 2, you need to check. Also from newegg you don't get the accidental damage warranty AFAIK.

The chassis will be the same as the other models, but the internal configuration may vary (screen resolution, CPU, HDD size, RAM).

Sorry for the dig, but anyone has tried Windows Seven in F8 ? (In this case, F8Sn ?)

I have access to MSDNAA and i have already download it, but Asus don't have anything at the moment about Windows 7 drivers.

hey speeddragon, I have been running windows 7 since the beta and have ran into no issues at all (f8sa btw). Most drivers work from the original asus dvd that came with the pc and just run the troubleshooter console for bypassing the "this windows is not supported" dialog. I personally reckon that win 7 is alot faster on the f8sa and battery life is just about the same though. I have had no issues with drivers or anything, as practically all drivers are compatible with win 7. (I also use driver genius to automatically scan and update all my drivers and that works brilliantly as well)

    Hope that helps

My f8sp-x1's battery slider has broken off (the internal portion of it is rattling around in there, but the slider itself is gone) and I'd rather like to get the battery out at some point in the future, maybe start using a spare battery to get more than 2 hours of use. Has anyone had this problem and does anyone know how to trigger the mechanism without the original slider to get the battery out?

    help!

i've had an f8p-c1b for a little under two years now. every once in awhile the screen will go blank, there will be an odd buzzing/clicking noise (thats the best way i can describe it), and the only thing i can do it turn of the computer and start it again. the first time i turn it back on, the mouse won't work at all, and i have to restart again. the 2nd time it restarts, itll work like normal. this usually happens when im doing something like streaming videos, but not exclusively. i've tried reinstalling the os, but that didn't fix anything. i've also been monitoring the processors temperatures (because it seems to correlate to the notebook getting a lot hotter), but it seems to be within an acceptable range (hovering around 70-75 C usually) i also sent it in a couple months ago to get it repaired (reported this problem along with a couple others). they sent it back to me (a month later), but the problem wasn't fixed.

has anyone else had this problem? im kind of at a loss here.

    @ yellow_jacket,

Try connecting your laptop to an external monitor or TV and see if the screen will go blank. If it doesn't it's most likely a faulty inverter board or a loose inverter cable. I'm not sure what could cause the mouse to not work, but you could try reinstalling the touchpad driver and see if that helps.

    Hi guys,

I'm working on upgrading the graphics card on my F8SA/P for some time now. Last year I managed to successfully replace the HD 2600 with a HD 3650 by flashing the laptop with a "Frankenstein" F8SA BIOS with the VBIOS of a F8SP. This year I implemented a DIY Vidock setup using the laptop's expresscard slot (see my sig). It's been pretty successful but the expresscard is the system's bottleneck so I am looking for ways to double the bandwidth. Most F8 models come with one expresscard slot and one mPCIe slot but there is a white connector on the MB that can take a small riser board to add another mPCIe slot. I want to use both mPCIe slots and link them on a x2 port for the DIY Vidock. Unfortunately, my F8S wasn't equipped with this inexpensive board since Asus only used it on Turbo Memory or TV tuner equipped models. Here's what it looks like:

    SV Riser Board R2.1 AI-ASH-36134
    60-NNNRI1000-A01
    90R-NNNRI1000Y

I've been scouring the Web for months looking for a parts supplier that has it on catalogue. It's not on Asus eStore and my order with Asusparts.eu has been waiting for over two months now. Anyone has any particular idea where I can find one? Any pointers would be really appreciated!

    Hey

I'm in the same boat as you, i've managed to find a Hungarian website offering the part and was wondering if you had any luck with them. The website is as follows: F8SA/SV RISER_BD./AS ? Asus laptop alkatrészek

Right now I have ordered the part and am waiting for a confirmation email from them. That said, good hunting S.T.A.L.K.E.R

    Hi there,

In the end I managed to get my order from Zandparts by hassling them a bit on email. Apparently they had received my order already but "forgot" about it. Anyway, it works fine on my laptop but unfortunately the extra port it provides access to is port #4 and not port #1 as I had hoped. That meant I couldn't hook it up together with the expresscard slot to make up a x2 1.0 PCIe link for my Vidock ( see here). If you ordered the part for the same reason as I did, save your 10 euros, it won't do you any good...

    I have a F8Sn with T9300, 9500M GS, 4GB RAM
Just upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate x64 this morning.
I ordered the ViDock 4 Plus this Tuesday, looks like it would be another week before it actually gets here. I intend to run a PNY 460 GTX 1GB card with it. I hope it doesn't fail.
I was stupid enough to buy the ASUS XG STATION which wouldn't work at all with my system when I was running Vista Ultimate 32 bit, so essentially I ended up with a $500 paper weight. This thing costs even more, and I sure hope it performs as advertised.

Does anyone know whether it is possible and feasible to upgrade the CPU to a quad core like QX9300 or Q9100? Is is possible to run 8GB (4G x2)DDR2-800 on this system? Thanks.

I got another question. Does anyone know what is the latest BIOS for the F8Sn?
The latest BIOS on the ASUS website is version 304, which I have been using for nearly 2 years. However I have seen users in other forums claiming to be running BIOS 305 or 307? Are these user-modified or beta BIOS? How do I get my hands on these?
Thanks, I am really confused now.

In response to my ViDock woes, I ordered a single 4GB DDR2 SODIMM.
Unfortunately it does not prevent the resource conflict error with ViDock.

The good news is that I have proof that the F8SN will work with 4GB sticks.
I've also tried a 4+2 setup and it worked as well.
Now the only problem is that to get ViDock working, I would have to reduce my RAM to a single stick of 2GB at the moment, but just to let folks know if you have an ASUS F8S or similarly equipped PM965 based system, which Intel and/or the manufacturer says you are limited to 4GB system RAM, it would probably still work otherwise.

It may be possible to do more extreme GPU upgrades than what has been done, even without reverting to external graphics cards; I am currently running an ASUS A8JS (the previous generation to the F8, with 667 MHz memory etc), and I upgraded from a 512MB GeForce Go 7700, to a 1GB 9650M GT :) This needed a specially modded BIOS (also, the vBIOS itself needed some mods too) - the setup is:

    A8JS BIOS, N50 vBIOS with mods, M50v 9650M GT (1GB) card

If you are looking for more portable upgrades, there are 200-series cards now available, maybe even 300-series cards (Nvidia) in the Asus reverse-MXM format.

Also, the MSI GUS (Graphics Upgrade Solution) is (apparently) due out soon, which should make external VGA cards easier / neater!

Good luck with the modding :)

I have the same model and I'm a little curious about this. What did you exactly do to upgrade? Did you flash BIOS only or replace the PCB with graphics chip either?

Digging and googling gave me nothing so could you tell me where to find that Frankie BIOS and what else is necessary?

Hi there, sorry for not answering sooner. Well, I had to do both BIOS modding and replacing the video card. Like many Asus laptops, the F8 doesn't really conform to MXM specification - the video card is a mirror image of the standard MXM connector configuration and the VBIOS is still built into the main BIOS like in previous designs. I upgraded my F8SA (HD2600) with a HD3650 from a F8SP but had to reflash my laptop with either the F8SP BIOS or create a custom F8SA BIOS by replacing the VBIOS module with the HD3650 from F8SP. Basically, both methods seem to work - I flashed my laptop with both the F8SP BIOS and my custom F8SA/P ROM and got it to POST just fine with the replacement card.

There is a bug though - with either the F8SP or the custom BIOS, the laptop cannot adjust the fan speed or CPU stepping, meaning that it's constantly working with fan at 60% and CPU stepping at max (highest performance). Other than that, everything works OK. At first, I was concerned with overheating and stability issues but after months of fairly intense gaming, I was convinced that it was not a problem. The only disadvantage is that the laptop becomes significantly noisier.

Ever since I've implemented a DIY Vidock setup for my laptop, I no longer needed the HD3650 for gaming so I tried swapping back the original VGA card and seeing if the fan problem went away once I reflashed the laptop with the original BIOS. Thankfully, that was the case - the laptop is now adjusting fan speed and CPU stepping as before. It must then be a difference in implementation of Intel Speedstep in the F8SA BIOS vs the F8SP one that I also manage to screw up in my custom ROM. I tried to compare the DSDT tables to see if there was a difference in ACPI functions but the tables were identical. Right now, I have no idea what was causing the fan speed bug.

Anyway, I can send you the custom ROM if you wish or I can point you to the F8SP BIOS version (the latest at the time, will double check for you) I used to flash my laptop, together with assembly details. Let me know if you are interested

Awesome. I'm interested in knowing how you went about to mod your BIOS and VBIOS. Can you give us a summary of the changes you made? I've changed VID and PID on the main BIOS but I reckon that might not be sufficient (see my previous post on HD3650 mod). I thought of using an even higher spec'd GPU but given that I lose fan control with my BIOS mod, I'm concerned the laptop will overheat with a Geforce 9xxx.

Hey everyone. I have a F8SN-C1 and I am considering selling off the 3GB DDR and buying a 2x2GB (4GB total) kit. Thing is, I am hoping to get the fastest speed RAM possible, but I can't find any information in my searching what is available or compatible.

I am wondering whether my best bet would be with some DDR2-667 with 4-4-4 timings or would the F8SN support DDR2-800?

    Thanks.

Hi all, I am new here.

I've got a black F8P that I bought 2 years ago. Recently replaced it with the EP121 (Slate) because the F8P has a major overheating issue. I hope you guys can help me out!

    - when idle, the machine will slowly go up to 60C. CPU usage is 0-5% all the time.

    - when watching YouTube videos (standard 360p), the system will go to around 70C.

    - when playing games (recently got hooked to Minecraft), the system will go to 80-85C before BSOD. Same thing with CIV5 a while back. Minidump has the following error:

I believe it's the overheating that is causing an error with DirectX. Can anyone confirm?

I've already opened the laptop and cleaned off the dust (by simply blowing). Would a proper gas duster be a lot better?

As a side note, the fan is kinda noisy. I don't remember it it's like this from day 1 or not.

Please feel free to ask for more info if that helps solving the mystery.

    Thanks in advance!

When you say your "system" gets to those temperatures, to what specific temperature are you referring? CPU temp?

I wonder if your fan is dying. Does the software you are using report the fan RPMs?

    Thanks Jebo for the reply!

I am using Core Temp ( Core Temp) for the temperature reporting. The temp readings are the CPU temp AFAIK (two temperatures displayed, one for each "core").

I am pretty sure the fan is running, as I can feel the air flowing out from the slot. I am not sure if the fan is working 100% tho. What's a good program to report fan RPMs?

    Thanks again!

    Hi guys,

I've parted ways with my old Asus F8SA recently and so I was left with a few F8 spare parts:

These are fairly hard to find at the moment (especially the GPU) so I reckon they might be useful to someone here. Drop me a line if you are interested.

hey all, had my f8va for a few years, now.

I got my shipped with 4 gigs of ram, but now I am wanting some more (going to pass it down to my fiance').

Is it true that it can only support 4 gigs of ram, or is that the Vista 32 bit OS limitation, and not the hardware limit of the mobo?

    That's just an OS limitation.
I have Windows 7 x64 with 6GB (2+4 configuration) running with no problems.
    I've heard people running 8GB (4+4) on the F8S.

Have just re installed windows on my F8V and the old jumping cursor has returned. Its been 3 years and i've forgotten how i got rid of this seriously brain hurting problem. From memory it was a trackpad or keyboard driver... can anyone refresh my memory or know the best place to get the driver.

    cheers

Any F8Va users still left? :)

I bought one in Aug 2008 and it is still going strong. Did upgrades to its CPU (T9900), RAM (2 x 2GB) and SSD (Intel 320) and have never had any issues. Even the original battery still holds charge enough for an hour or so..

Any more F8Va stories? Looks like it was one of the best models of ASUS as I haven't seen much complaints about.

Hi guys, this is my first post here as well.
I've used my F8va for four years now and it ran hotter as it aged so I decided to do something about it.

    My original specifications were~
    CPU: Intel T9400 [6.2]
    MB: Intel PM45
Graphics: AMD Mobility Radeon 3650 [6.1]
    Storage: 320GB 5400rpm [4.5]
    RAM: 4GB DDR2 800mhz [6.2]
    Keyboard: Island type
    Battery: 1x 4800mAh
    OS: Windows Vista 32bit

To solve the over-heating problem (it gets as hot as 85 degrees celcius) which causes the laptop to shut down when gaming, I've replace the old dried thermal paste with artic silver 5. Results are great with the laptop maxing at 72 degrees celcius.

Because I've been working more and more on photoshop I've constantly maxed out the limited 4GB memory so I've purchased 8GB memory yesterday. (Still waiting for it via post).

To solve the slow 5400rpm drive, I've replaced my drive with a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB 7200rpm HDD 8GB SSD cache. Results are fantastic with boot-up being under 30 seconds and applications load faster as I use them more.

I'm currently deciding on whether to purchase the Dual core Intel P9700 (2.80ghz) 28watts or the Intel T9900 (3.06ghz) 35watts. I'm leaning more towards the P9700 as I would like more battery life when I'm out. P9700 is also cheaper as well.

Recently I've found the tv-tuner card to become somewhat less useful to me and the plug seems to be a msata. I'm thinking of replacing the tv-tuner card with a 64GB msata and putting my OS on that. Has anyone successfully done this?

I've also replaced the keyboard from island keys to chocolate keys as they are wider and completely flat. I'm a moderate gamer and I hate how the island keys causes the fingers to slip into the crease when pressing the buttons.

Now here's the interesting part. I know that our graphics card is a mxm type 2.1 which means it is upgradeable. I also know that the best mxm type 2.1 which will fit into the laptop is the AMD Mobility Radeon 4650 which can only be obtained from the ASUS N81vp laptop. Has anyone successfully upgraded to this graphics card and have a proper working bios? It is extrememly difficult to find that mxm card these days and so I've almost given up hope of upgrading the graphics card.

Below is the specifications which I"m aiming to upgrade to. I've been lucky to get cheap deals for my upgraded parts so far. Storage and ram together have just been over 300usd.

    CPU: Intel P9700 [?]
    MB: Intel PM45
Graphics: AMD Mobility Radeon 4650 [?]
    Storage: 750GB 7200rpm HDD 8GB SSD cache [5.9]
    msata Storage: 64GB msata SSD
    RAM: 8GB DDR2 800mhz [?]
    Keyboard: Chocolate type
    Battery: 1x 4800mAh & 1x 5200mAh
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

I'm not some rich spoiled guy, I'm just a ASUS F8 enthusiast which have used this notebook for 4 years and plan to use it for another 3 years as it runs really well.

Any suggestions or answers to my queries are most welcome! :)

Is there an easy way to remove the optical drive bezel?
The optical drive is dying again and I intend to buy another drive to replace it myself instead of going through Asus, last time they charged me 800 RMB (approx $130 USD) to replace the DVD drive.
I can get a newer model of the same drive on Amazon for $30 USD.

You can really just separate the bezel from the optical drive yourself. It's not that difficult, you just need to take a bit of care to prevent the clips from snapping off. If you query your own ability, I recommend you take it to a third party notebook repair store and they should know how to do it.

    Tried searching everywhere ...

I owned an F8sn-B1. The only thing that doesn't work after upgrading to Win7 is SPDIF output. I figure it's a driver issue that I don't have.

Can anyone help a brother out?

Hi, you could try downloading the F8vr windows 7 drivers. My F8va doesn't have windows 7 drivers so I use those. I've had no problems at all.
    Here's the link: F8vr Windows 7 drivers.

I've also had the chance to test whether msata ssd works with in the F8va. I can confirm it doesn't because it is only a mini PCI-e and not a msata.

Does anybody know whether the Intel QX9300 processor will work with the F8va? Has anybody tried it at all?

I read a comment on Bestbuy's page that the Rocketfish adapter mentioned above had some issues with ASUS laptops, so I got a Targus instead. I can report it works for the F8Sn.

I decided to skip the bezel didn't really care if the new one doesn't keep the shape...
However, removing the mounting caddy has turned out to be an impossible chore...
    WP_000440.jpg
I absolutely hate these tiny screws...I spent over half an hour and only managed to remove two out of the four screws (the ones on the side rails, I actually lost a screw in the process), the ones on the back (shown in picture) wouldn't bulge at all.

UPDATE: Despite physically unable to removing neither the mounting caddy or the bezel, I just decided to jam the new drive inside the slot and it appears to be securely locked in place even without the mounting caddy (and of course that means I cannot use the long screws to secure its placement). The new drive is recognized in Windows and currently functional.
I bring the laptop to work everyday, wonder if the new drive will fall out one day.

So I've finally completed my upgrade quite comprehensively.

    Final build:
    CPU: Intel T9900 [6.6]
    MB: Intel PM45
    Graphics: Nvidia 130M GT [6.4]
    Storage: 256GB OCZ Vertex 4 [7.5]
    RAM: 8GB DDR2 800mhz [6.6]
    Keyboard: Chocolate type
    Battery: 1x 4800mAh & 1x 5200mAh
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Ran into some problems while installing the Nvidia driver but it turned out fine :)

NOW IT'S TIME FOR SOME BATTLEFIELD 3!!!

Awesome.. any feedback on upgrade ?

I own f8va since 4.5 yrs.. last month graphic card gave up and I am unable to find replacement. I almost lost hope until I saw your post here. Would you mind sharing what gpu model, price, etc did you use for the upgrade? Also, I appreciate if you can write down on what issues you have encountered while gpu upgrade.

    Thank you so much,

Hi, I've been nothing but happy since I've upgraded. Notebook runs blazing fast thanks to the SSD and 3.06GHz dual core.
The Nvidia GT130M has been fluent on low settings in Battlefield 3. (As opposed to unplayable when it had the ATI HD3650)

Biggest issue was, I should've gotten the DDR3 version of the GT130M instead of the DDR2 version. Much better performance.
I got the gpu in Taiwan for 5000twd. If you are upgrading the graphics card I would suggest the ATI HD4650 as it is the fastest card for this laptop.

Before you buy the card, make sure you learn how to mod the bios to support the vga bios and also flash the bios onto your motherboard.

Anyone had any luck with GT 230M or 330M? Or is that impossible?

    Thank you for the reply

My laptop display is completely gone, there is no way I can see now on what is on screen. To mod bios is quite tricky now, any suggestions ?

Also, if you can share how you mod the bios will be very helpful for me, because we both have same model laptop.

I was wondering I did you manage to put nvidia card into your lappy, I checked both ATI vs Nvidia card slot.. both are different.

    Thank you,

    Hi all,

First of all, sorry for my bad english, i'm french ...

I have a problem with my Asus F8sv. The original 8600GTm died a little time ago so i bought the cheapest card i found on ebay compatible with the Asus F8, an ATI X2300 128 DDR2. I put it in the laptop, it start but with a black screen, even by the VGA port...

My laptop have the latest bios found on asus website.

What can i do ? Is there a way to flash a modded bios automatically because i have no screen ?

    Thanks a lot !

My F8SN's HDD died on January 1st.
After reinstalling Windows 7 x64 Ultimate on a new HDD from scratch, I encountered 4 exclamation marks in device manager.
Installing Ricoh SD/MMC driver package quickly dispatched two of them.
But the remaining two really left me scratching my head all day.
1 of them is identified as an unknown device but the details show it is the ITE 8707 IR device.
The problem is every time I attempt to install the driver, an 00020B error or whatever occurs, so it always failed.
I never used the IR for anything in the past 5 years with the F8SN, so I could live with this if it is never resolved.

The next problem is my primary concern.
I don't know why the Intel 5350 AGN WiFi device is now appearing as an unknown network device.
Tried installing Intel Pro/Set drivers of various versions and OEMs, but the driver keeps reporting that no Intel WiFi device is detected.
I thought it had something to do with the WiFi switch, but pressing Fn F2 and installing ASUS Wireless Console made no difference in resolving this issue.
Please help, otherwise I have no choice but to retire this laptop after I return to US next week.

When you reinstalled the OS, did you do a clean install? Or other types of install?

I have put the drivers for the ITECIR Infrared Receiver here: https://mega.co.nz/#!wIxEDDRL!JkFCOkdnb6JwossnTeou4BhLMPgYSnYNBFJuomS2hHA You should be able to download it and try it out if you have another IR device... I don't think I have any specific drivers for the Intel 4965AGN WiFi card however.

I'm going on well over 5 years using my F8Sn! Had to replace the battery and the ac adapter in the past year. Also upgraded to a Kingston 256 GB SSD...
