-
I believe he is still using SetFSB

Yup, still using ol' SetFSB

I didn't think that temps were oddly high, it was that the larger chasis G71 seemed to get beat out by the G51 when it came to cooling the 260. Is the difference in resolution with the G71 being slightly higher significant enough to warrant the higher GPU temps. -
I would think that the larger resolutions would yield higher temps, but I am not sure.

I really gotta stop looking at these reviews just make me wanna buy it more and more. Hey Brian, the HP DV3T got here very well made very fast with P8700, but the HD runs super hot. my palm was on fire when doing intensive work and fan is constantly ON none stop spin at high speed driving me nuts. I think at idle the new DV 3T fan is louder than the Asus. I think HP might be going back and just hope they lower asus to 999 again
How's yours running? -

I was supposed to be in LA right now, actually, but I decided I would rather save my money and buy the G51...;P -

If you are getting it bare, then they are very unlikely going to be able to work with you, unfortunately. I actually dont even get it that low with my employee discount, surprisingly enough. Your best bet is to tell them you had it originally for that price and see if they'll cut you some slack for the fact that you had originally bought it at that price anyway, but its going to be very dependent on the store's philosophy and the specific employee. My store is very flexible compared to a few other stores I hear about.
If there are some accessories you're looking to pick up, I would definitely recommend picking them up in combo with the laptop because then you have something to haggle with. Like me, I'm actually going to get mine for 999, which is actually less than what I get with my employee price like I said, because my manager was willing to work with me since I'm getting a protection plan, mouse, and one of the Logitech G35 headsets. -

Has anyone tried GTA4 on the G51 besides me? It ran real choppy on mine. Now I havn't upgraded anything on it or overclocked anything. I was wondering if a new processor or overclocking would get it running smooth? I don't have any exp with overclocking by the way.

The G51 successfully identified my Denon AVR (2809CI) and quickly allowed for a 1920x1080 resolution to match the native res of my Samsung 52" 1080p120Hz (4ms response time) LCD TV. Now I didn't play much with the multiple screen support however I did notice that if you want to run both screens (duplicate info) the Laptop as well as an external you are limited by the lowest resolution between the two (makes sense), so I turned off the laptop screen. Also remember you may need to change your TV screen settings. If you have it set to 16:9 you will have to resize the desktop which can be easily done through the Nvidia tool (it was real easy) however this will ultimately change your resolution to a custom setting. For Samsungs change from 16:9 to "Just Scan" and the TV will take the 1920x1080 and not have to resize the desktop at all, looked amazing.
I made some sound changes in the manager to update all the supported formats of my AVR as well as set the output to HDMI and 5.1. The Denon detected all input channels just fine. (it displays both the number of input and output channels)
Now the temps...as expected they went up.
Same game (Warhammer Online) all settings high for about two hours. Over the period the GPU tems ran on average in the high 60s (68-69) and during more intense PVP durings Scenerios where I would purposely run into the mix just to alt tab out to see my GPU temps (as I died in game) it hit 78C.
The temps dropped quickly back to the high 60s after I was out of the main action (respawning from death).
The CPU temps in "extreme turbo" also went up but I would guess this is because the CPU and GPU share the same cooling solution for the most part and as the GPU heats up so does the CPU.
In this round the CPU averaged around the low 60s (61-62) with the highest I was able to record being 64.
I will admit I have not really played with the HW monitor freeware but is there a way to have it record the averages high/low for you while you play so I don't have to "alt tab" out and hoping I catch the best temps?
I will be hooking the G71 up tonight and seeing if the temp gap tightens between the two with similar resolution (1080p).
The battle/struggle continues to determine which laptop will ultimately remain in my possession........ -
Warhammer, you should be able to adjust the display settings to support both screens as an external display with their own native resolutions, just go into the graphics card's settings by clocking "advanced" in the display properties. At least I'm pretty confident you should, it would be ridiculous for it not to support that, considering at Best Buy I was able to put like little 299.99 Asus netbook up to a 1080p monitor and have them both running as an extended display to their native resolutions.
I was even able to run the netbook at the 1080 resolution, it would just scroll along the screen when I wanted to look around the netbook's screen...lol -
my dad just picked up a new sony bravia 46" LCD, 120hz refresh rate. just finished I am legend on blu ray, and now I hooked up my G51 and did some L4D gaming in full HD. AWESOME!!! The 260M can handle steam games on high in full HD!

My laptop hit 73-75 on the CPU and about 91 on the GPU after a 3DMark trial on stock clocks.
The CPU crested at 71 with an overclock/undervolt combo, but the GPU shot up to 96 with a beefy overclock. And that got me within spitting distance of 13,000. -
Awesome! Nice to see you got that X9100 into your G51, but with those A1's out there, you should wait to see if your QX9300 works!

Well part 2....The G71 BB model steps up to the plate.
Same setup as the G51. Detection of my AVR and changing sound options was just as flawless. The only slight difference is this time I was able to briefly get into a Fort Raid attempt which would have me involved with about 100 other players in one very small area (max eye candy).
First the CPU, I found that there was not much of a difference in temps between running it at 2.53 or OC'd to 2.9 (TurboGear). The average temps during game play were in the low 50s (52C-54C) with the highest temp recorded during the 3 hour session being (68C). OC'd the average during game play would go up 2-3C.
Now the GPU. Here is where it was a little surprising now that the comparisions are done at the same 1920x1080 resolutions. (Although it follows what I experienced when doing the side by side but at the laptops native resolutions weeks back).
The GPU average temps were in the low 70s (71C-73C) during game play with a max temp hitting 81C. I must say I am surprised that the "bigger chasis" isnt providing better cooling than the G51. On average the GPU is running 3C-4C higher in the G71 doing the same thing. Now even more surprising is that both laptops use a shared cooling solution with only one fan and the GPU in the G51 ran cooler in spite of being tied to a warmer CPU (almost 10C higher)

Well, it was fun, but the short of it is that the Best Buy model will not accept quads.
Sure was fun, though, and the setup I have ain't bad at all. -

Question
My G51 kept dropping wireless connection, even after I updated the latest intel pro wireless WIFI 5100 driver. Then When I move the G51 around while computer is on, There is this buzzing noise coming from the hard drive. Not scratching or anything, just like a mosquito buzzing beside your ear kinda noise.
Normal? Bad Sign? -

Can someone plz do a little easy experiment for me?
When laptop is on, hold it with both hand and tilt it around..different angles..let me know if you guys hear buzzing noise from the HDD? just want to see if mine is bad or is it normal for this line of laptop...thanks.. -
That's 7200 RPM hard drives for ya.
The reason why you're hearing that on this laptop is because the HDD (Hard disk drives) are spinning at a high speed, much faster than your typical 5400 RPM laptop HDDs. When you tilt the laptop while it is at full speed, the centrifugal force of the spinning hard drives resist the change in the z-axis, just like how a bike works! But since we're much stronger than the resistance, the HDD loses the battle, and the spinning platters end up bending in resistance while we force it to move, rubbing against the writer arm, causing the "buzzing" noise.
So, in essence, don't do it too much
Cool tip: If you turned on the laptop in 0-gravity, it will act as a Gyroscope!

If the laptop is still and you STILL hear it, then you need to take it in to the shop ASAP! -

Here.
It is a different brand and model, but I used it as a reference piece.
NOTE: do not do what he did for putting on the thermal paste. Don't just put a glob on and smoosh it. Put a dab on the processor, and then spread it with a razor or dead credit card. -
Thanks forge. I appreciate the help. And dab means? Little? I put it on te chipset and the cpu right? After i clean em up? I ordered somw icd7's i heard its somewhat better than as5. I used it on my msi when iswithed from p8600 to p9700. On my sig but its sold already

Just went to return my second G51 at bestuy due to idling temperature at 85C and wireless started to drop off again. I had to change the channel often to keep it from being dropped. At the counter, BB supervisor advised me they are getting a good amount of returns for asus laptops, including but not limited to G51's due to minor defects. He even mentioned it was higher rate than Dell and other brand's return rate. Will stay low for a while and see.

Personally, I put a little bit more, and as I spread it--I used a very handy putty knife--I wipe off the excess off the blade ever few strokes or so. The layer you should have when finished is literally paper thin. Actually, you want it almost transparent.
-
You don't spread any dabs on the heatpipe, right?
