The W3j's come with a travelers drawer for the modular bay (which is just a blank drawer)...... the modular bay battery is an optional accessory and always has been.

I just wanna make sure, does the W3J have a extended battery, like a 12 cell battery in which protrudes out of the machine?

Imagine runninga 12 cell which gets about 4 hours and a modular battery which gets about 1 hour, a grand total of 5 hours and a slight increase in wieght. :D

    Thanks,

People on the dell fourm has this problem and found that if they changed the windows power management profile to home/office from laptop, NHC reported 1.83 when on A/C and 1.0 when on battery. When set to laptop is always reported 1.0. Work load did seem to make any difference.

or if it is just a copy problem, you could split the file with HJSplit, copy it and then join it.

I use HJSplit for lots of files mp3, video, word, acrobat. it works well. although that would be a lot of disc activity to split a 4+gb file

Buying the same RAM today - was the install pretty easy? I have printed out the directions and it seems pretty basic...

I've never seen an extended battery, and it's never been marketed from what I've seen, so its highly unlikely :(

Muji -- Yes, two sticks of 1 gig each for a total of 2 gigs. I didn't try BF2 and Oblivion with 1.5 gigs, so I can't comment on the improvement from 1.5 to 2. I can say that I noticed a tangibly smoother gameplay experience going from 1 to 2.

Grime -- The install was a snap once the good folks in this forum answered my q's on how to install RAM. :) The install isn't included in the manual, but a couple folks replied to my request for help and included some photos that showed exactly how to do it. Do a search or scroll back a few days in this forum if you're curious.

Today i had problems turning the stupid w3 off after using wlan. I dont know what happend but it wouldnt turn off. Tried some differnt things like disabling wlan and turning off, have it running and turning off. But whatever i did i was forced to press the power button for 4-5 sek to turn it off. Dont realy like to do that when the computers are checking the disk when you turn it on agin so a solution to the problem would be nice. Am i stupid or was the network i logged in to weird. Or does the w3 do something stupid?

I'm having some problems I'm running into when playing some games. I've tried playing Black & White 2, Star Wars: Empire at War, Pirates!, and Civilization 4. The games look great ... play for about 5-10 mins then lock up. The whole system freezes and I have to power down and back up. I'm getting pretty frustrated with this and would like to not see this locking anymore. Anyone have any thoughts on what the issue might be? It's not locking up anywhere else other than in games. Please help! Thanks!

Stock drivers, no overclocking. I did upgrade my RAM, but I figured I'd see some lockups just using my system (which is on 24/7) outside of gaming if that was an issue. Should I try upgrading the video drivers maybe?

Omega has some great drivers which will clock up the gpu to really what should be "normal"..... that should help a lot. Asus unclocks everything to a certain point to find a balance with battery life and heat........ now, from that point I wouldn't suggest overclocking the gpu past those "normal" settings... but it should help a lot.

I have some questions about ATI catalyst, omega drivers, ATI Tray Tool, and all those other things that have to do with my x1600.

I am geting kindof annoyed with the catalyst program. It seems like its always doing something even when I'm not doing aything on the computer. The CLI.exe is always changing how much memory its using and seems pretty active in my system. I have read from previous posts that ATI tray tool is a good program to take the place of the catalyst program. I prolly won't be doing too much in the way of o' cing but basically just need the program to be able to switch my displays (dual display to a TV or monitor). I might try to oc but maybe later. I also hear people talk about the omega drivers and they say they are quite good.

I am not too sure about which one to install, either omega or ati tray tools. Or if I shoud change anything at all. What does everybody think?

thanks for any input in advance
    Dan

First off, the memory changing in all likelihood is a good thing not a bad thing. The x1600 has 256 mb dedicated but also 256 hyper for when the need may arise. This may change dynamically depending on the application you're running.

Second, ATI Tray tools comes with the latest omega drivers so you get it automatically when you install the omegas if CCC really is bothering you that much.

Third, if you game at all I would recommend getting the omegas. They improved my 3dmark score about 250 pts so you will be getting better performance just by changing the drivers you are using.

Anyone know of a "gaming" bluetooth mouse? I have been spoiled by side buttons and all the little do-hickies that make me lazier when it comes to my mouse. I don't mind plugging my USB mouse in but since I have Bluetooth I would like to use it and maybe even some headphones.

I think I might install the Omega Drivers but the performance of my W3J is perfect so I might hold off till some new game requires more of it. The laptop did lockup after playing World of Warcraft and required a reboot but I did play for 6 hours one night. I was also sitting in the recliner and the vent was close to the armrest so I assume the ventilation was poor. Other than that it had been flawless!

I went ahead and installed the omega drivers and the ati tray tools seems to be a lot better program (customizability). The only problem that I am having now is that when I try to hook up my TV thru s-video and select the clone display, it doesnt do anything at all. I think this may be a problem with Hcontrol- I can actually switch the displays to use my lcd + tv using fn-f8. But everytime i do that it changes the resolution on my lcd and kinda messes everything up.

I want to be able to hook up my w3j to my tv and have a cloned display. Although I can do this kinda with Hcontrol, I am wondering if I should diasble hcontrol so that it would work with Ati tray tools properly (But then I wouldnt be able to use the other buttons).

Does anyone else hook up a tv to their w3j and if you do, did you use the omega drivers?

    thanks
    Dan

I'm going to throw my hat in with Kodene and jterp7. I have not been able yet to bring the computer out of standby. It's really annoying, especially when you get up for a break during lecture. Hibernate works okay, though. If anyone has an answer/solution, I would be most grateful.

I'll probably post a topic in the ASUS general forum as well.

    Thanks,

    BT Logitech Mouse Prob...

    A-Lit,

I have the same mouse but I was unable to downlaod any of the Logitech software. I kept receving an error message saying that I didn't have the appropriate BT software intalled. I tried connecting without the software and it seems to work fine. Is there anything in the software that I really need. I even downloaded an updated version from the Logitech site.

    Thanks

I too have the same problem. On my wife's ASUS S5200N, standby works fine - all you do is hit the spacebar and the laptop comes back top life. With my new W3J, I get nothing at all when using standby and hitting the spacebar. I'm reverting to using hibernate until someone can figure the sleep problem out because I've tried every key at this point with no luck at all.

how about, closing the screen while the computer is on and then opening the screen? Will that work? Also do this while have the hibernation function turned off.

or just turn the LCD off but have the screen open, would that work too for you guys?

    Thanks,

    Hi all,

I am very new to asus, and have been looking at this w3j model for quiet a while. The specs are amazing, i like the speed, the gpu, the size, etc... But the only problem is that i am a designer and need a good size notebook to work with. I have been using a 15.4" notebook for a while now, i just recently got rid of it and fell in love with this 14.1".

I am mainly traveling around so the size and weight is perfect. I am usually on photoshop, illustrator, or some type of 3d rendering program for hours at a time. I am very worried about the screen size, do you guys think that the 14.1" will be hard to work with? (I am never home so an external moniter is a no.)

    thanks.

Joystik, I had the same worries before getting the W3J, I was worried the screen would be too small, I use mainly photoshop, indesign and AutoCAD and 3D Vis.

After getting the W3J I was surprised at how big it felt (I was moving from a 13.3'') the W3J screen was not as high but it still has the same vertical pixel dimension

I find the extra width is great, especially with indesign or any program with lots of menue's you still get plenty of working space.

I think this size is great (although I have only been using it for a week and havent loaded all my software yet).

I use the W3J for Photoshop and 3D work in Lightwave. I find the screen is more than enough for me to work in my 3D program and in Photoshop.

I use a 24in Widescreen LCD at home in dual monitor setup for my 3D work.

    http://www.threedcg.com/2405/IMG_0025.JPG

Going from this setup to a 14in widescreen notebook while I am away isn't a problem at all. The W3J has ample desktop space for 3D work and lots of power under the hood to boot. The screen is nice and bright with good color reproduction after some tweaking. Although the viewing angles are not anything awesome they are more than good to work with.

I just recently finished this project exclusively on my W3J and it was just as enjoyable as using my large desktop monitor.

I wanted to thank everyone who gave me suggestions on fixing my lockup issue, and I seem to have fixed everything now. I think there was a directX issue. I reinstalled and it works ok now. No lockups anywhere. Back in love (just a lovers quarrel) we're ok again :p

Like people said before on this forum, please do try the Omega drivers. I play a lot of games on my w3j without any problem. The lockup's I did experience when i just got the asus w3j was because the power4 gear utility was in "quiet office" mode. Switch it to "game" mode with the top right button on the side before lauching your game.

    Hi everyone,

I have been reading the NBR forums since before Christmas 2005, doing research for a notebook computer purchase. I probably should have made a forum account earlier, but I didn't think of it. :p

Anyway, originally I was considering getting a Dell, then HP/Compaq, then MSI, then Toshiba. The size of the laptop (I wanted a 14.1" screen) was a major factor in my decision for a notebook computer, but I also wanted one with a decent graphics card. It looked like I was going to have to compromise one way or another.

Then, I read about Asus notebooks and the W3J. I have been following these forums closely for a few months. The questions that people have raised here, and the answers given have been immensely helpful in my search.

I recently (Monday) received my W3J.

I have been experiencing some of the game lock-up issues that other users here have experienced. It happens during Guild Wars, and I have to use a paper clip on that little button underneath the laptop to shut it down. Having said that, nothing happened when I was playing the FEAR demo. Anyway, I will test the solutions that have been suggested on these forums.

Apart from that, there have been no problems, and I'm very happy with my purchase. I have yet to "test" it fully, but I expect to have some time for that this weekend.

These forums have been so helpful, and reading has allowed me to make a very informed decision.

Does anyone know if games lock up because of heat, or is it a driver issue?

Set my mind at ease, hehe, I just ordered a w3j this morning and it arrives monday. :)

I travel a bit, and a month ago I gave my gaming desktop pc to my brother. I was hoping to use this laptop while I'm home as sort of a dtr until next year...also I plan to purchase a laptop cooler, can anyone recommend a good one? noise/cooling wise?

    thanks

I first tried setting the Power4Gear to "Game" mode, and played Guild Wars to try to re-create the problem I'd been having. It usually happens when I am roatating the camera whilst in the middle of a battle. Game locked up and froze the computer, so I had to restart.

Then I uninstalled the Catalyst Control Centre, downloaded the Omega ATI drivers, and installed that. Started Guild Wars, and again tried to re-create the same sort of situation in the game where the computer locks up. It didn't happen this time. I haven't got time to continue testing it tonight, but for now I am satisfied. Will have more time this weekend to try to "break" it.

I don't think it is a heat issue, as I've got the notebook on top of one of those aluminum cooling pads. There is plenty of air circulating underneath, and the room isn't too hot. Yes, I do feel hot air coming from the exhaust, but I don't think it is an unusual amount of heat.

The notebook won't be my primary gaming computer anyway, but it's nice to have that option when I am on travel. Main use at home will be in conjunction with my drawing tablet and using Photoshop. Travel use will be some gaming, web browsing, DVDs, and various Office-related tasks.

RE: Cooling pad. I have the Titan Serena cooling pad, without the optional card reader slots. My only complaint about this cooling pad is that perhaps the fans are not as strong as they would be if you went for a cooling pad that isn't powered by USB. Having said that, the fans are quiet. Also, since the intake of the laptop is on the bottom, the fans that come with this pad are not that effective since the intake is from the top and it blows out the sides and the back. However, since the pad is raised and it's metal, it seems to do a good job of allowing airflow. Also, laptop doesn't burn my poor desk. :p

    Hey guys,

I'm a sort of lurker, I just got my W3j a few weeks ago from MilestonePC (who were really good btw), and I've had no issues with it until now. The screen used to be unbelievably bright when plugged to the power outlet, but now it's less bright (as if running on battery) even when I use it with only the power (battery out)... it's definitely not the screen settings from the right buttons, and I've tried to find out if I moved anything in the control panel, but no luck yet.

Anyone experienced this? Can you throw some ideas on how to get it back to normal?

The only changes I've made is to install Omega drivers, but they used to work fine before so I doubt that's the issue...

    Thanks for any input :)

    Hi guys,

I am planning to buy a W3J on saturday and am going to play a lot of games on it. Can someone PLEASE confirm that Omega drivers fix the lockup issue as this is huge for me.

    Thanks a lot.
