Hey, does asus do repair work after your warranty has expired? Like Dell? I'm not talking about them sending you parts but you sending in your W3J and them repairing and then you paying the bill? Thanks guys.

    Hey all:

First off, thanks for all the advice y´all have put into the thread. There´s a lot of good stuff in here, but I find myself reading it over and over again just in case I missed something. It would be helpful for us noobs if we could get all the information on this thread into a single post, maybe even sticky it. Just a thought :)

What should I do after I select: "Let windows manage wireless?" Because I did this but now the internet says that the page cannot be displayed...

    Hello everybody,
    I have recently bought a W3J Notebook...
The specifications for my notebook is this :
    CPU : Core Duo T2300 1.66 GHz
    Ram : 512 MB DDRII 533
    HDD : 60GB Fujitsu
    VGA : ATI mobility X1600

    The problem is :
I don't know what is the release ID for my notebook (e.g. H001P)
(H001P has 80GB hard drive not 60GB and as far as I know the usual HDD brand for W3J is Hitachi)
And I don't know whether this notebook supports 667 MHz Ram or not (The support guys here insist that the best upgrade for me is 512MB DDRII 533 )
And I also wanted to know how can I set shortcuts with the FN key.
    Cheers.

    mujtaba,

Where did you purchase your W3J from? It sounds like it was the non-refreshed version specs? As for upgrading the ram, it's probably safer to upgrade with the 533 MHz. There really is not that much of a difference in general use between the 533 and the 667 DDR2 ram.

    Hello Doc,
I bought it from Iran and I must remind you that this one was the only version I managed to find...
And my choice was very limited because the american companies don't have ANY support in Iran and so only the importers with a +5% bonus give you a warranty... (with a lot of hassle)
I have to choose between Inspiron 9400 (bit heavy and with an underclocked gpu :( ) , Toshiba P105-S921 (I don't want a notebook that falls apart automatically (search compliants.com with keyword toshiba to find out more)) and ONLY one kind of Amilo that supported MXM (But wherever I called everyone denied the existence of such a thing (MXM) here)
    I wanted a steady , well-put-together , portable (I don't like a 4 KG heavy notebook) and with much research I chose W3J...

    thanks.

hey just recently got my w3j yay!! i'm having problems with dvd playback using VLC. it would usually spike/stuttering (seeing lines across the screen) here and there. its really annoying and i tried changing profiles but its still there . do you think its the graphic card? or maybe i need new drivers? btw i'm using the driver that came with the laptop

things i tried: 2 dvds, windvd, media classic player, reinstall drivers (3X), omega drivers, backing up image to hdd and playing it.

Placed an order for a W3J, and I´ve got a couple of questions:
    (1) Has there been any concenus on what sleeve fits the W3J snuggly?

    (2) Will it run Crysis or is that out of the question?

    (3) Where did everyone buy their bay batteries?

As always, thanks in advance! :)

Hey, I have a few questions/problems and am looking for help.

Does anyone else have a problem with there battery where it is not flush against the chasis? Does anyone know of any solution to make it fit properly?

Also, does wmp turn on for anyone else when they plug their battery in?

And finally, does anyone know the solution to the problem the w3j has recovering after being in standby mode?

    Thanks a bunch :p

    Phoenix,
A slightly loose battery is a common issue with W3J and I think it's better to leave it the way it is because it's not a really serious issue and tampering with the notebook/battery might lead to real trouble.Just keep in mind not to pick the notebook by the battery and it will be allright (If loose batteries were dangerous ,Asus would have done sth about them ;) )

What does WMP mean ? (Windows Media Player)

And this is just not the problem of W3J's (Search for yourself)
The salvation (it a least worked for me)
DO NOT LET YOUR NOTEBOOK HIBERNATE AFTER STANDBY (use power settings to make sure of that)
AND when you want to wake your PC up (from standby) press Escape and no other key (beware of pressing space pressing it and some other keys will lead to a hang-up.The same thing was right about my brother's PC)...
    I think it's rather Windows(C)(R)(TM)'s problem...
    See ya.

I am about to buy myself a W3J, and I'm looking around trying to find a nice protective sleeve for it. I've been looking at the Vyper sleeves at booq.de ( link), and looking at the W3J size specifications it just barely doesn't fit into the Vyper XM sleeve, though it only lacs a few millimeters to fit. I'd hate to have to buy a Vyper L sleeve, seeing that this one will be more than large enough, so I was wondering if anyone is using any of these sleeves, and if it does indeed fit in a Vyper XM sleeve even though it should lack a few millimeters according to specs.

    Any answer appreciated

CGil- I don't know if you have figured this out yet, but what I did was used a program called "StartUp" (runs from the control panel after installing it) (it is like MSConfig, but it can actually remove registry keys for startup programs if you want). Using StartUp, I disabled anything related to the Intel ProSet drivers after setting the drivers to allow Windows to handle the Wireless. After the Proset drivers/programs were disabled, Windows Wireless has worked pretty flawlessly.

Yep, I did a similar thing to Brianoska in that I used MSconfig to start anything intel proset related and my Window's wireless has had no problems either. It's actually quite easy to see which ones are Intel proset related once you stretch out the "Command" section and see where the program is starting up from.

I have to agree with brianoska and doc who. Worked for me to use msconfig to disable intel proset. Windows stuff works great. the range is much better than my colleague's recently purchased vaio subnotebook.

Hey, I noticed this lounge if falling way back here, so I decided to help move it up. I ordered my W3J from Milestonepc.com the other day and chose 2nd day air. I should be getting my laptop around the 8th...I can't wait. I'm hoping that it lives up to my expectations after having heard so much about it. Upgraded to T2600, 2 gigs memory, 100 gig/ 7200 rpm hdd, 2 more years of warranty, and... a car adapter, lol. Hope I'm not disappointed. Oh, and Danny was very helpful throughout it all. :)

Hey thanks and thanks to the other guys who mentioned it too. Yea, I was just able to disable intel wireless from msconfig, I think there were three? intel processess used to run it. This might be off topic, but does anyone know what might be going on if my w3j's wireless only works if our other computer is disconected from the internet? Is there like some internet setting that blocks sharing ro something?

I just got my w3j a couple days ago... The 2.0Ghz + Bluetooth model... So far i'm very impressed... build quality is top notch and everything works including audiodj and recovering from standby.

I noticed if you apply a bit of pressure to the aluminum lid, you get a bit of a screen ripple. Nothing drastic really... Is this normal? Can ripples damage the lcd?

Check the bottom and find the screws labeled with a "K". Those are the ones holding your keyboard. There are also tabs that hold your keyboard by the F keys. Make sure those are fully pushed in.

Just got my W3J+ from c9tech yesterday (great service and price, by the way). Not to beat a dead horse but this thing is awesome! I was starting to doubt it after reading many negative threads, but now that I have it I am definitely happy. The speakers aren't even as bad as I expected!!! Definitely an awesome buy.

Do any of you experience LCD "rippling" if you apply a bit of pressure to the aluminum lid? For some reason it doesnt do it AT ALL on a white background, or a solid coloured background... Only really occurs on the wallpaper i have, haha... I can't understand this... It's always in the same spot in the top right quarter of the screen... The screen looks perfect, otherwise, so i'm tending not to fret too much about it... Thoughts?

Oh yeah, that happens with all LCD's I think depending on the strength of the backing. This should only happen while you're pressing on it. Are you always pressing on the same spot? And it's rippling only if it's pressed right?

Yep, only with pressing... But i can press a few places and the ripple is in the same spot (pressure point?)... However there is zero rippling and no flex when opening/closing the notebook, so thats a good sign.

Just because the lid is aluminum people thing its extremely tough... not so... It's only thin aluminum and you can see flex when pressing in the middle with the notebook closed... I hope it doesnt become a problem..

On a sidenote i just ran fear, and it seems to run quite well even on high settings... At high settings it hickups once in a while, but i would expect that... Right now i'm installing half-life 2, the game i always wanted to play but didnt have a good enough comp to do it!!

Wow, that's very odd, that even if you press in different places, it still ripples in that same spot. That's beyond my knowledge...

If you're worried you can buy a sleeve for yours, something that's semi-rigid might be good.

lythia, just out of curiousity, try closing your lid very slowly... does one end close before the other? If i close mine very slowly the right side closes first by about 2mm... when its completely closed everything is fine tho... I guess you just have to have some tolernce for manufacturing variation...

Anyone recall what page(s) that the BIOS volume adjustment steps are on? I saw it a while back - prob. a month or more - and I'm finding the volume too low on my lappy by default for watching DVDs specifically.

I think I remember someone going through and adjusting it in the BIOS - I'd like to look back and see what they did and how it worked out...etc - Thanks.

just got my W3J and i am very happy with it. besides repartitioning the hard drive i haven't had any problems (knock on wood). as everyone knows laptop speakers suck mightily. so i wanted to get some bluetooth headphones and i got it down to three choices: Motorola Bluetooth Headset HT820 or BlueAnt X5 Stereo Bluetooth Headset or Plantronics Pulsar 590A Bluetooth Headset. appreciate any suggestions. love the fact i don't have to use the touchpad buttons anymore after setting up synaptic touchpad to my liking.

i would take advantage of the quality analog headphone amp and instead invest some money in headphones like grado's or sennheisers (i would recommend the grado sr-80's)... If you are looking for audiophile sound over nice styling, that would be the way to go.... If style is a matter then go for your bluetooth, but dont expect stellar sound.

    Hey Felonius Monk,

I have the moto ht820. and ive tried the Plat bluetooth stereo. They both work pretty well but the plat just looked too big/silly. Although both are fairly heavy. The bluetooth 2.0 edr works really well and the range is true to its class rating even with the toshiba drivers.
Take a look at the bluetake iphono mini. Also bluetooth doesnt is pretty fair on the bat life.

As promised, last night I closed my lid very slowly and the right end closes first by maybe 1mm or less. And when it's completely closed everything seems fine. I was holding it with 1 hand in the middle.

Is that anything to be concerned about? I'm just wondering because I've never heard this kind of question asked before. :p
