To everyone wondering about the ACTUAL battery life, a reviewer (or should I say, THE reviewer) from Amazon on the product page had this to say:

"Speaking of which, another area where they cut costs is the battery. It's a 4400mah battery that is stated to achieve a 12 hr run time. I'm seeing about 10 hours of battery life in power saver mode, still a great amount."

Of course if anyone who has it here sees differently, go ahead and tell us :)

I could almost kick myself for not making a decision a month or so ago when Newegg.ca had their 2nd anniversery sale weekend. They had the UL80VT knocked down $20 to 929, but then on top of that for that entire weekend everything was discounted an additional 10%. It was right after I returned the 2nd UL30A-A2 and I was gunshy because I had no clue whether the 80VT had wireless problems too.

But in the end I am glad I didn't because I really didn't want the extra weight and bulk that goes with the dvd drive. This lappie will be for travel and presentations, and believe me after packing an 15.4" Toshiba P4 laptop around europe, lightness, small size, wireless reception and battery life are EVERYTHING in my books (and a screen big enough that it's still comfortable to do some work). The 30VT is everything I want, and depending on the price of an 'A' version I just might settle for the X-1. ;)

um, for the guys that got their laptop already, did you ever receive a tracking number? I only got an order confirmation via amazon, ordered it last night with overnight delivery, its supposed to get here tomorrow. I don't see a tracking number email anywhere, or in my Amazon.com account.

actually you should read around other forums. people take tom's reviews for a grain of salt because sometimes they dont' know what they are talking about. with less spinning of disk, it's to assume that your saving battery power. overall, an ssd uses less voltage to power, but a HDD will save power when idling.

    read this... Tom's Hardware apologizes

Tom's hardware was inaccurate. In the test where it was described that SSDs used more power, they also did a lot more work relative to the spinners. In reality, given equal work loads, the SSD would be done quickly and idling at a lower power state, relative to a HDD.

Gaming benchmarks for the UL80VT with the exact same specs can be found in my sig.

I also ordered a UL30VT just a moment ago. It is supposed to arrive December 5th. I'm excited about having the exact same machine as the UL80VT (minus the ODD) but in a size that is 30% smaller. I'll be posting a thorough and detailed review of it. I will also be comparing it to the UL80VT including pictures. :D I am hoping the build quality of the UL30VT is better than the UL80VT.

For those of you who have the UL30VT, is there keyboard flex? Do you notice any creaking if you squeeze the palm rests or put pressure on them? How easily can you bend the chassis of the UL30VT?

    Thanks!!

EDIT: I just read the initial impressions of some of you guys earlier in this thread. That's a negative. No flex/minimal flex and no creaking palm rests. That's very good news indeed.

lol, uh, thanks I guess... :p

That's sweet. I am kind of doubting whether or not Amazon is actually going to be able to get my UL30VT to me by Saturday. Did you receive confirmation that they shipped it yet? Last time they delayed my order of the UL80VT by two weeks so I just canceled it and ordered my UL80VT from xoticpc.com.

And I'm not too rich... but I just don't have to pay for a lot in life yet since my cost of living is so cheap and I have a high paying job, plus at most it's only going to cost me $125 to upgrade to the UL30VT. I think it will be worth it if the build quality is better and it has a smaller size.

For the guys who get their laptops. Could you please comment on the screen quality? What do you guys think about it. It's one of the few things holding me back from getting this, after the complaints about the UL80VT's screen quality. How's it looking for this one?

    Thanks a bunch!

I have the worst luck... Unless I am being premature in this statement, I think I fell for the 'get it next day' from amazon. I selected one day, it said I should receive it on December 4th... However, it is now 10:32pm CST with simply 'shipping soon'... I am out of town next week. I was hoping Amazon could deliver and I will cross my fingers on it.

I compared the size between the UL30VT and the UL80VT. Here's what I found:

    UL30VT Specs: 12.68 (L) x 9.17 (W) x 0.97 (H) = 112.7 Cubic inches
    UL80VT Specs: 13.3 (W) x 9.45 (L) x 1.06 (H) = 133.2 Cubic inches

20.5 Cubic inches difference in size

    UL30VT Specs: 3.7 Lbs
    UL80VT Specs: 4.41 lbs

    Asus UL30VT = 18.2% smaller, 19.1% lighter
    Asus UL80VT = 15.5% larger, 16.1% heavier

I think for those questions regarding the quality of the screen and flexibility of the chasis etc, I am fairly confident that they are the same parts as the regular Asus UL30. This site has a very comprehensive staff review on it already, I don't expect any of this to change. I imagine the LCD, chasis etc came out of the same parts bin :)

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5263

The performance will probably be the same as the UL80vT.
    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5346

The only thing that seems different outside of the GPU is that the wireless N card is now Intel, so it shouldnt have problems anymore and the battery has less capacity. At this point the battery power is pretty much the only unknown.

Comparing the wireless to my work Dell D620 and a M1210 I can confirm the wireless is catching as many bars as those two laptops. Also did a speedtest on them and it came out the same.

the flex of the chassis i had on my a2 is gone. screen is same as a2 which i dont mind however offangles arent the best. as for the battery im on powersaving 88% and says 5hr9min(also wifi bt about 40% brightness) left which if i had to guesss would be 2-3 short of the a2 with 5600. definately will be picking up larger battery in future.

    another question about the screen.

you say the viewing angles are not the best. but does the screens brightness gradiate from top to bottom at all like unfortunately alot of laptops do these days? in this situation you end up with a washed out bottom and a dark top where blacks spots will shimmer in games :(

im looking for a laptop that actually has a screen that can be viewed properly and does not exhibit this issue.

unexpected not entirely sure what you are talking about. the screen is evenly lit. the thing i noticed compared from most laptops ive used is it tends to washout, lose color, fade, i dont know the term, slightly more than im used to. might be because the LEDbacklighting i dont know too much about lcds

im talking about being faded on the bottom and not on the top sorta thing. you could tell if you had a black screen. in this case a lot of the time the top will start inverting colors in the darker range. a good way to see this is in test 2 of 3dmark 06 which you would see the inversion of color in the trees at the top of the screen.

I think it should fit just fine. In one of the pictures on Amazon someone took a picture of their Macbook in it so I think the Asus should work just fine for the sleeve.

ran performancetest 7.0 x64, see attached result, it's in turbo mode.

battery charge alone can take up to 53 watt usage, idling takes about 13 watt

busy cpu takes about 31 watt, sleep mode is < 1 watt.

There was also a review who said it didn't work for Macbook Pro 13". probably because it was too big. It might fit. Hard to tell. Most likely the sleave would be a tad to big for the UL30VT so that it is a little loose, but it would work.

Does anyone's hotkeys not work after bringing the computer out of hibernation? Well, most of them still work, just not screen brightness. The animation will display but the screen doesn't change.

Yeah, it happens on my Samsung NC-10 also. My solution for that was that I had a script that would close Samsung's app and relaunch it. I'll probably attempt to do the same on here.

I had everything set to medium (native res) with the frame buffer off. Very playable, I was plesently surprised. I have a feelinging if you lowered the texture detail to low you could keep the frame buffer on, but its a matter of personal prefference.

Ordered w/ next day ship for only $7 more! Amazon prime is awesome. Looks like I'll be joining the ranks.

Moving from a 13" MBP... well not really I got scammed out of my laptop :(

Any strategies for clearing the bloatware yet? I'm tempted to just use my student license of Win7 to clean format; but not having an optical drive might make it a little challenging. That and re-install of drivers will be a pita I'm sure.

Was selling it on ebay. Got a message from a guy who wanted to buy it from me directly since he was in my city. I said ok. He sent a paypal payment using a stolen cc. I didn't wait for it to clear and ended up handing it off before paypal came back and told me there was an issue with the cc. Completely my idiotic fault. Kind of upset that the payment initially went through on paypal's side though...
