Finally I have mine notebook in mine hands again Guess what BIOS reads as v701
-
is there a place to download the v701 bios for for the s96s notebook that is running XP?
Does this version fix the lack of mini firewire support? -

oh hey, so ive seen some advertisements about the nvidia geforce 9600m GT upgrade card..... is it really possible to upgrade video cards for our laptop?
also, in regards to the bios posted above, when i load up the asus bios flash utility and point it towards the above bios, this is what I get..... it means it is safe right? The reason I ask is because of how picky our laptop has been in the past in regards to bios updates....... I just want to make sure it is a safe upgrade.
-
yup thats right, i have been running 701bios for a about a month. no problems
-
it installed great! but I now notice that the 1394 net adapter "can not start" any fixes out for this?
-
Tomgrm: did u find out the problem?[/QUOTE]
Fixed it! - So i followed your instructional guide as to how to take the fan and heatsink off, what it turns out it was, was that black sheet of like plastic paper that covers part of the mother board where the Fan sits on top of.... It some how came loose or stretched out over the round circle where the fan sat. so when the fan would get going fast, it would cause the black plastic sheet to flex and wiggle in some parts, causing the slight, most annoying quiet noise ever! haha. so what I did was took a pen knife and cut a wider circle for the fan to sit on so that the black plastic isnt right around the fan and taped the edges down so there are less loose parts, and the loose parts are secured down rather than just resting on the motherboard.
Thanks so much for the walk through and pictures, and interest in my problem, it took me a while to figure it out, but with your help I did, so thanks again! Also thanks so much for helping me with the bios update. It's always nice to have community members not be rude or snobby on the internet (Which is an unusual find!)
Thanks Again!
Tom -
thanks guys.
Also @ SATDOG - did you notice your fan was used less when you put that Acric cool stuff on your processor? did you therefore notice a quieter computer and longer battery life? -
AS5 sure helps to keep the temp low during load(both cpu and GPU). i think its a must! helps to extend the longevity of the chip. What i do notice after installing the 701bios is that the fan doesn't come on as often. I don't think our notebook is loud at all, IMO it is pretty quite...
Tomgrm:I still don't get why your notebook's 1394 adapter doesn't work
Do u have vista 32? have u installed service pack 1? i think the driver is provided by microsoft.... so make sure u have installed the current service pack for xp or vista... -
I have Windows XP Service pack 2...... I dont understand whats going on with my 1394 adapter! its driving me crazy! It used to say it was working properly but had the exclamation point, but now after this updated bios it says it can not start..... I tried uninstalling it and restarting and all that but it doesnt work. I dont know of a place to download the specific driver because I think your right, the windows platform should provide the drivers for it......
Where did you buy your AS5 for the CPU and GPU?
Where is the GPU located? I only saw the CPU - the white goo came off it after I removed the fan, is there another place I should spread it other than the CPU where the white goo was? -
u can get Arctic silver anywhere , i bought mine online. A little tube costs 5-6bucks or so. Its cheap and u only need a grain of it to spread on the cores.
In the guide pics #3, i labled the cpu and gpu cores. the gpu core should say nvidia on it. The gpu should be below the cpu. Apply AS5 only to cpu and gpu CORE(shiny)! IF u removed the thermal pad that was on the cpu core, u should apply AS5 immediately because without the thermal pad or AS5 the cpu will overheat!. -
It's me spamming again. I'm using 7.15.11.6758 (167.58 Vista x64). Mine 8600M GS reads as DEV 0425 SUBSYS 826C1043 REV A1. I just wonder if we all have same graphics card (subsys or revision). If you know some stable drivers with good performace for Vista x64 please share
EDIT: GPU-Z says that mine is A2 too, then again why I have in Hardware ID REV_A1 -
-
Hmm, i have Revision A2, too. Thought will have A1, but nope. And still unstable:/
Now Im really confused. GPU-Z reads rev-A2, but from driver information DEV0425 & SUBSYS 826C1043 rev-A1...
Bad recognition by driver? Could this be a problem of unstability?
@satdog: What bios version GPU-Z shows for your gf?
At my s96s is shows Unknown... -
Hey guys, its been awhile, looks like satdog is still helping guys out, awesome job man, just wanted to know how are you guys liking the laptop, about a year and a half later? im not minding mine, the battery life made me buy another cheap lenovo for school, but this laptop is really pleasing me, im happy with what it offers (although a nicer resolution would have been nice). Would it also be possible to upgrade the graphics card in this to something a little bit more powerful?
-
My batterlife has gone to **** too, an hour at the most! the graphics card is integrated into the motherboard.....so we gotta upgrade if you want a better video card, but that means dealing with Windows Vista, because all new laptops are no longer supported by XP, and that means that the manufacture does not make drivers for any new components that will be shipped in the laptop. So even if you get a barebones and want to install XP onto it, your outa luck because there are no XP drivers for any of your nice new components.
LAME! -
Actually with a bit of scavenging you can install XP on most, if not all, ASUS laptops. We have good guides for doing that, for many popular laptops. See the Info Booth.
Also, Vista is not as bad as people make it. You should give it a try before you kill it, if you do buy a new laptop. I killed it myself on the W7Sg, but for you it may be different.
-
So im guessing its not possible to upgrade the graphics, that is a downer, this laptop is sooo freaking powerful, yet has an overclocked 8400 in it (yes the 8600GS is just an overclocked 8400) my laptop should have bioshock flying on it, instead, its choppy as hell, it works better on my P4 computer
-
Well... nearly all laptops are a "downer" in this way...
-
yah can't upgrade graphics card on most laptops. Our laptop is not built for hardcore gaming.... i still play some sports games and CS:source on it ocassionaly and I have no problem with fps with those games(50-60fps).
So, ye its been 1.5yrs with this laptop and vista runs very well, no errors and compatibility issues. I have been very happy with this laptop. I take it to school all the time(its not that heavy). The laptop is very sturdy! Battery life is down to an hour -
Thanks for the heads up though! -
-
PS: Just noticed that the temperature went from 50 to 82+ after that... almost ruined the CPU. Be careful with disabling c4 mode
-
hello,
I have a little problem with my S96,
I wanted upgrade my BIOS, but didn't see that battery is almost empty
[yes I know, I'm a big Idiot], and offcourse, laptop switched off in few min. later, without finishing the flashing,
after that, I see just a black screen, nothing else
I've tryed few methods that I found around in the net, but without success...
Have anyone any suggestion ?
PS.
sorry for my english -
My DVD/CD burner is acting wierd. It reads like it should, and burns DVD's like it should, but when I try to burn any kind of CD with many different programs it appears like it has burned the CD, like it goes through the whole process and looks like the program has burned the CD but then when I eject it and put it in any machine it is read as blank, including my own Laptop..... has anyone come across this problem before or know what to do? Has my drive crapped out on me?

Does notebook at least lights on/off|battery led?
When I flashed badly it went off totally (I was running on AC when flashing). I would suggest to sent it for repairs. Worked for me -
-
hy, i got my S96S last year, 2008, in august, and it has been in repair like 2 times and i am gonne take it again to fix it, one of my usb port is not working, hard drive has been replaced but sometimes it starts to make weird clicking, power off then on helps then, but its not normal, and it has 701 bios version i think, aaa and it creates alot of heat, gpu goes with vista up to 100C !!!!!!!, with xp its normal, like 70C, i think this heat causes freezing, just playeing, or on booting, the picture freezes, nothing helps than pressing the power button, they changed my MB and HD and still go to repair that PC :S
sry for my very bad english, but i hope that everybody understands and can give good advise -
Ok, I know I have asked a similar question to this before, but I can't seem to find the post within the 58 pages of this forum, anyway, so because the CD burning capabilities of my CD/DVD burner have stopped working I am going to have to buy a new CD/DVD burner for my laptop. Does anyone know the form factor or dimensions that work for our laptop? It seems like when I search for Slim CD/DVD burners on newegg there are a couple different form factors of the drives available to choose from. Can you guys help me out so I dont buy the wrong size?
Thanks
Tom Graham. -
Hey guys...
New to this forums as u can see, but am an owner of S96S for more than a year or so... The problem im having is in the left palm area of the notebook, washed out paint from all the gaming and sweaty hands...
I wanted to paint the whole thing over but im having trouble finiding a repair manual which will help me in dismantling this thing and putting it back together after the paintjob.
Can anyone post a link where i can get one, or you can just send it to my e-mail?
Cheers, and thanks for help...
P.S. love the lappy -
Like I mentioned above, check the Asus estore for parts. That's your best bet to find parts for your S96. -
hei
i figured out, the cooling system is counting on proccesors, when temp. is 45, then they stop, but videocore is not cooled
and even if the fan works, it wont do the job, all the heat goes over the MB, and thats why it freezes, i built my own coolingdock, with a powersupply, i connected 2 pc coolers to make them to work, and they are cooling now
CPUID shows me that proccesor cores are 37 and gpu is 60
i didnt shut down my laptop yesterday to see how down the temp will go, in the morning i found that cores were 30 and gpu still 60, its normal, laptop is not that hot anymore, it will not freeze anymore, i even clocked my dual core pentium 1,8 to 2,4 to test COD5, i run very smooth
I suggest to buy a nice laptop cooler, and remove the panel from the back, then can it use normaly
again, sry for bad english, i am still learning grammar in the school, but i hope that information will help -
Shoot, I see that I can buy a new drive from there, but it is more expensive than on other websites, but the asus site doesnt give it's manufacture company or model number or size for me to compare to others..... bummer. Thanks for the quick reply though! any other ideas?
-
I am excited! I just bought a new DVD/CD burner that is slot loading, and a new 500 gb hard drive and they get here today! I am going to install XP on half and Windows 7 On half of the hard drive! Ill let you guys know how our laptop handles windows 7.
Side note questions - does anyone know of a bios I can upgrade to that will recognize and allow the mini firewire port to work again? -
Great news everyone! Arctic Cooling MX-2 and removing silver plate (because conductivity I suggest to use rather AC MX-2 than AC Silver 5 on GPU) on GPU heatsing lowered temperatures by 5degC. I will run wPrime now to speed up paste burn in time.
Anyway there is only one solution to better cooling, flash with bios with lower fan spin start values 701 starts with 60C on cpu (reading from RealTemp 2.71) and that is just too high.
Will report back after day or so when temps should be stable.
I have bigger toy now.
What really helps is removing back plate of notebook (that with 3 screws) wPrime 1024 on 70% and CPU 56 GPU 68 deg.
EDIT: After some time (2h) CPU 49 (RealTemp) GPU 74 (GPU-Z) -
i just got the GTA IV
benchmark showed 15fps and memory 237
i updated my drivers from 101 to 180.70, now the fps is ~20 and memory for use were 242
cool!!!
i have 1,86 2cores pentium4, 2gb 667, and crysis ran smootly when objects, shadows, shaders were medium and rest were set to very high -

Hi
What is version of an official and stable BIOS for S96S?
I have 205, but I've red that some of you have even 8xx, but I can't find it on official site.
Where I can find iso files with latest BIOS?
Regards -
@ Morgue666: Thanks for try but mine post is old half year .
@ johnuser: I have 701 and it is fine, look on asus download/support site for notebook Z96S this bios should be ok. I have tried to flash with 801 and EPICally FAILed but mine piece is more out of order than ok. So good luck with flashing -
hey is it a problem to go to a previous bios? like right now i am using 0701 and I want to go back to the one that came with out notebooks the 1.07.
The reason is I finally need to use the firewire port and only version 1.07 supports it.
Also does anyone know where to get a copy of the 1.07 bios? OR if anyone u are still using it can you save a copy of it and post it on here?
Thanks! -
Hi guys, I'm new here but I've had the S96S for about 2 years now.
And well my Hard disk is getting quite full, 80gigs , I was wonder what type of disk i should get to make this work. And is there a way to transfer my existing hard disk directly to the new one? I mean OS and all. -
Hi, no worries all 2.5" S-ATA drives should do the magic. For bit copy you can use dd or for partition copy GParted (running from CD/USB(ISO) or from linux).
Mine WD Passport Pro 320GB stoped working (just the usb part not drive it self) so i switched it with that in S96S without problem. But for 1-1 copy second pc is must unless you have some usb2sata device. -
I recommend Acronis True Image, trial installation, for duplicating your current data on the new harddrive. Will duplicate system partition as well, while Windows is running. So you can start off with the new HDD as a complete copy of the old one -- except of course the size which is larger.
I usually do it via creating images (Create images of old partitions; connect new HDD via USB; make new larger partitions on the new HDD; and restore from the images onto the new HDD).
Has always worked without a hitch for me. -
Socketbind THANKS!!!
PROBLEM SOLVED TO ME TOO!!!!
YOU ARE MY PERSONAL JESUS CHRIST!!!
FOLLOW #359's INSTRUCTIONS! -
A quote of the post would have helped, now I would need to divide 359 by 15 to obtain the correct page number (ah the pain! ).
-
Have someone tried 0803 bios from asus support site?
-
Does it bring back support for the mini firewire port? if so im going for it.
