Penryn is the next wave of cpus from intel. They are based on a 45nm fabrication process instead of the current 65nm. They are also quad core.

They will probably rock the socks off what we have now :p People are estimating 4ghz+ on a stock air cooler will be possible with an overclock easy.

They will require a new mobo/socket tho.

However there will be a cut down dual core version that can go into the bearlake chipset mobos.

Penryn when intro (desktop) will still use 775 or 771 socket... may requirer new chipset... but older chipset may still be able to use with new bios update. Penryn is basically dual core conroe 45nm derivative with some added instruction.. and bigger L2 cache (4 to 6MB). Quad core derived will be .. dual penryn(wolfdale) will be named Yorkfield with two native dual core.. just like present Kentsfield/Clovertown. Native quad core (or more) like the AMD phenom X4.. will come later... with 45nm or later die shrink...

Penryn wasn't a gigantic leap in performance. Some testers reported that it was a 40 percent increase compared to a modern quad core BUT they reported 18-22% of that increase was due to the fact that the processors tested were different clocks. So thats like a 20% increase but the point is penryn really isnt meant to be performance but energy conservation. Its merely a die shrink and it will have huge effects when comparing battery life. I find penryn rather pointless if you want performance while you should just wait for the new nehalem processors which will come out 1 yearish from the release of penryn and is a complete new micro achitecture which some are actually calling "core 3" but which has nothing to do with having 3 cores but the fact that is so vastly different from penryn and core 2 duos that it is considered a new generation of their processors. I need a laptop and got the c90 because it fits what I need but if your in no rush dont get penryn because when nehalem comes out you will be kicking yourself in the ass. Not to say penryn isnt great the new sse4 instructions, new production materials (also lead free? go environment!), new 5-6 stage power modes of the processor which will increase the battery life. But just like all new things expect to pay a hefty premium if your buying it in the first few months of its release. But then again Nehalem's die shrink Westmere will come out 1 year from that in 2009 on a 32 nm die shrink. Lately its gonna be impossible to keep up :( .

Looks like its begun! I am tempted to go buy mine now but no need I'll wait for every bodies feedback on it first and shop around for my parts. I only have the HDD right now (its so small and light compared to desktop hdd's its strange to me)

Id really like sombody to test 4gb so I know if I should order 2x2gb next time a good deal pops up on the ram deals thread, or just save some money and get 2 or 3gb.

I have a strong feeling 4gb wont work, but if they enable it in bios it may.

Also waiting for more feedback on the 2600xt, with performance comparisons to the 8600gt, and for the option for blueray/hddvd to ship with the unit (not that I would get that tho its probably too expensive)

Wanted to share somthing I just found. One of the big reasons to get the C90 is due to how desktop cpus are much cheaper than the mobile versions.

The C91 is due soon that will use a mobile cpu, most would shy away from it due to the cpu prices but....

    http://xtreview.com/addcomment-id-2728-view-Intel-mobile-core-2-duo-price-drop.html

looks like they are going down in price alot here in a few months, so this may make the c90 much more appealing and also make the reasons for getting the c90 abit less important.

Yeah but the desktop c2d still more powerful and overclockable.

    http://techreport.com/onearticle.x/12683

It seems the t7700 will be 360 which makes it around 105-120 more then the e6600. Still this is only a rumor while it may be true this is third quarter annoucement probably and wont make a showing till september or late august which for me is too late because of college.

Not too mention how long the c91 will take to come out. Asus will officially announce it and so on. While the c91 may make a smoother transition to the market I dont think it will be available before mid-late august.

The xtreme cpus usually are of a higher quality wich mean they overclock higher, also the extreme's have always had unlocked cpu multi's.

Besides that not sure if there is a diffrence.

In this case tho you notice that the xtreme chip is not listed at the end, and the new 7800 is not listed untill the end. Looks like they are just replacing the X7800 with the standard T7800 and droping the price by 300$.

It improves performance. When the processor detects a task which is single threaded and doesnt require a 2nd core it overclocks the first core significantly while powering down the 2nd core. This makes the processor more efficient.

Well Bto tech's site has said the freighter has left from taiwan and that it was confirmed late june for a couple of days now. Also gentechs site has removed mid-june whether it be because well its past mid-june or they are almost ready. I spoke to a female representative who called about confirming my credit card authorization and I forgot whether I asked her when they were going to recieve the shipment or when they were going to start shipping but she said early next week so I hope I asked the latter.

For the CPU, just go on Newegg and search for the level of CPU you want...ie, E6600. There's only one kind. And the C90 is easy to put together, there are several links on the forum with directions for assembly.
