Has anyone gotten MBM (mother board monitory) 5 setup with the ASUS C90S?

    If so, how?

As in a hardware mod? Like rewiring the fans so that they are always on?

In games such as Civ 4 the GPU temperature will steadily climb to well over 100C until the machine shuts down. Since the CPU isn't under any strain at all the fans will never kick in.

    hi
can someone can comfirm that the Asus c90s cpu e6600
in power savingmode/standard mode and gaming mode
have a fluctuating clock speed ?

i mean in cpu-z in standard mode
the clock change from 1600 to 2400 mhz periodicly
..the multiplier also change : x6<->x9
    idle or burn....
    same for other modes......
the +20% overclocking mode seems to work .....
fixed clock monitored in cpu-z : 2763 mhz
    fixed multi at x9
i tried to disable speed step in bios but...always fluctuating clock :(
    if someone have an idea
    thanks

yes, it steps the processor down to a lower frequency when you're not using it enough to warrant the higher clock to save on battery, and lower heat. In OC mode I guess since Asus thought it to be the extreme mode they disabled that feature. It's normal...don't worry.

Any one have an answer to this: Has anyone gotten MBM (mother board monitory) 5 setup with the ASUS C90S?

    Also, I have another question.

My on keyboard audio controls don't function. I press control and mute/decrease volume/increase volume and nothing ever happens.

I have the realtek HD audio installed, and my windows sound in the tray also.

Sound on the computer works fine but the on keyboard controls do not.

Do you have the ATK drivers installed? You need that to use all of the keyboard controls like the wireless on/off etc.

You got it! I forgot to install those, works perfect now.

How about MBM5 or another monitoring program?

Speed fan only shows one tray display at a time... =(

You might want to look into RMClock. It can display various CPU and batt info in the tray.

Have other people had problems with AC adapters with their c90s? I just bought my third adapter, and I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing wrong, an issue with my unit, or an issue with the model in general?

    Thanks for any feedback,

12ow ac is required with any c90s using ddr3 8600. 90w is not enough and will fry

Well I have the ddr2, and at least the one I have now is 120W so hopefully this one will last. It's possible that my second one wasn't up to the job, it was from an old laptop that at the same plug and voltage, but it didn't state the watt max. So it was probably a combination of bad luck with the original, and a bad adapter for my second one.

THanks for the quick reply, having this resource makes owning an unsually PC much easier.

    Hey, RMClock seems pretty cool.

Is there as way to remove the little "clock/cog" symbol from the tray? I only want the temp, and battery.

    Also, can this do GPU?

    I miss MBM5.

I gave Rivatuner a whirl, but wasn't really happy with it.

Then I found out ATITool works with NVIDIA, and coming from an ATI desktop I know the interface and enjoy it very much. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Well, I've been playing CS:S (counter strike source) on my laptop with mixed results.

I've experienced frames per second (FPS) as good as 120FPS on 1680x1050 res, and lower filter settings. I was extremely pleased with that!

However, I attempted to play tonight on battery alone, so no over clocking there:

I was averaging about 30FPS, dipping into the lower 20's and occasionally the high 40's which was very disappointing after the stellar performance I had seen earlier.

This is also very Dependant on the map, of course.

At any rate, I wish I had been able to get the GDDR3 version of 8600GT...

I could have dealt with the overheating issue during gaming pretty easily.

Oh well, here's to hoping that ASUS and NVIDIA come through with their claims to put the 8800 series on MXM II.

I'd be willing to pay up to $250 for that type of performance.

War, your FPS was so low because the driver clocks the card down (PowerMizer). Go into the control panel and disable it to maintain your clock speed on batteries.

Is this different that setting the turbo gear to "standard".

According to ATITool my current clock at "standard mode" are Core: 275 Mem: 200Mhz

I think they are supposed to be 500ish, so I guess thats why!

Has anybody tried using an SD card for readyboost using media reader in the C90? I'd be interested in giving that a shot since it seems like it would be a lot more convenient than a usb stick.

Was it really a must on a noteboo agedk almost a year half?

Anyway, if you guys were hopping to see a Radeon 3650 for it, I wouldn't hope so, since the desktop 3650 is between the 2600PRO and the GF 8600GT.

The 3690, on the other hand is only a bit better than the 8600GTS.

I just tested my notebook with 3DMark06 with 173.65 and got 3666 which really isn't that bad of a score with an E6700 in Game Mode (@ 2.98Ghz) and a 8600M GT DDR2 at 500/450, highly recommend this set. I know, I know I could get a higher score, but his set performs very well.

    Couple questions:

Anyone know why CPU-Z lists the C90S as having 3 Ram slots? (With slot #2 being empty?)

Also, it lists my bios as 08/28/07 - are there any updates since then?

EDIT: Also, what is the remote control for the C90S? If any of you have it, where did you get it?

Asus.com lists the TV Tuner as a "supplied" accessory?

    Thanks,

BIOS: I'm not sure about the date but the version # should give you the info you want. If that one is smaller than what's on support.asus.com, then your BIOS is not the latest. :)

Weird about the memory... maybe the controller is for some reason configured with 3 slots although there are physically just 2. Or maybe the Turbo Memory is identified as a 3rd slot? Unlikely.

Since the board is based off the 945 chipset, instead of a mobile one, they probably had to cut off a slot to fit it in a laptop.

Ran this test a month ago with CPU on OC mode and GPU clocks at 550/1150/780 on ddr3. Highest temp for GPU during the test was 77C, it is mid 50ish during normal use and 47C is idle. Using drivers 167.58.

I ran another test with clocks at 600/1200/780 which i got a score of almost 5200 using the same drivers. Highest temp recorded was 82C, I could probably go higher and use better drivers but maybe later. All tests ran at 1280x1024. A lot of people were saying 169.04 and 169.24 gives them the best performance out of their 8600m but when i tried these drivers, my 3dmark06 score would almost drop by half.

Before this, i also had a 8600m ddr2 which i managed to get a score of 4200 (this is before i did the mod, i could probably get this score go higher as well). I could have probably gone higher though. For those stuck on mid 3000s scores on 3mark06, make sure you get decent drivers and if want OC by flashing bios. I knew i couldnt get a score higher than 4000, but i found out the biggest factor in getting higher scores was temp. Before my notebook would idle 80C and 97C on load! A lot of the time the drivers would crash or run sluggishly since the temp was so high.

After doing the vicious mod and using a laptop cooler (i just picked up a random one out of best buy, its a single fan belkin cooler that has a funny curve that suprisingly drops the temp by a few degrees even without the fan on), temps dropped by 20C! That meant i could OC higher clocks and the driver would never crash or run sluggish. Just a tip for all those people frustrated on their 3dmark score, because i knew i was after seeing how some people were hitting 5000s on their 8600m gt. Games i were getting 20fps~ on, im now getting 30fps+! Sad thing is, without the vicious mod and cooler the ddr3 would overheat even on stock settings....

As for the 8800, does anyone have any more news? I'm interested to see how much performance increase we will see and the price tag.

EDIT: oops, i forgot to put my specs.

Also, what drivers do you suggest running for these cards? I'm just using the one on Asus.com.

    More info please! =)

What drivers do you have? I knoe 174 intruduced a new view system, I think 169 too.

I dunno about the 8800, but the 9600GT just got released and it almost as good as the 8800GT so a 9600M GT, as good as a 8800M GTS is possible by summer.

laptopvideo2go.com is where i get all the drivers since they have the latest nvidia drivers and you dont have to wait til ASUS releases their drivers. For ddr2 the 169 series were working pretty well but on my ddr3 they worked like crap.

    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showforum=84
Here is the link for the 167 driver, if u go around in the forums u can also find the other drivers. From what i heard 169.04 and 169.28 works best with the 8600m gt but they don't work on mine (possibly since im on vista and using ddr3) so i use 167.58 and i've been fairly happy with the performance. I haven't tried the 171 drivers but i also heard they give some of the best 3dmark scores but unstable since these were originally made for the quattro series.

If you want to push your c90s to the limit i suggest doing the Vicious mod and getting a notebook cooler. It works wonders with ocing. What I did first was taking off the ACE door on the C90S and use a notebook cooler before i did the mod to see how much it would really affect the temps.

The second thing thing to do is after u get sufficient cooling (if u cant do vicious mod for now just take off the ace door but a notebook cooler is a must, although i do not recommend carrying around ur c90s with the ace door off just take it off when ur using it at home or something until u can get the mod done), is to start overclocking. If u realized, the newer drivers wont let driver lvl overclocking so rivatuner and ntune does not work! So we have no choice but to overclock our 8600m gt by flashing the bios. I'm pretty sure people have already written guides on how to do this, just search around the forums or google. It might be a little confusing at first but once u get it, it takes 10 seconds to do. In fact i often underclock my gpu to the bare minimum to save battery.

Also i want to add a few comments on my c90s.

After mods the laptop is cool to the touch EXCEPT where the hard drive is. I have the 7200rpm 120gb, and im beginning to think i should have got the 5400 200gb just because its cooler and i'm already running out of space.

Vicious Mod i s very nice, but only if you using a cooler with it. Alone, it only drops the temps a few degrees. The con is that you have to carry around your cooler everywhere and it runs off the c90s battery making it even less portable. Not a problem for me since im always next to an ac outlet but the extra weight and noise kind of gets annoying. It's definitely worth getting though. I only had 2 coolers, the lapcool2 and the belkin one im using right now. The one of the lapcool2's fan stopped spinning within a month, i don't know if i was unlucky or if they were poorly designed. I like the belkin one since its 1 fan and very quite but if someone can recommend me a better cooler i would be glad to take a look.

Once I can find the maximum clock my gpu is willing to go and find the best possible drivers, ill post again with the new scores. After that i guess i can only wait for the 8800.

EDIT: oh cool, ill look at the 9600 right away.

So with the new drivers (169.04) ATI Tool, and such won't let it overclock?

Will the turbo gear still allow it to OC?

Turbo Gear only OCs the CPU... i think
    could be wrong.
And yes, newer drivers doesn't let driver level ocing with any program on the C90S. You have to flash the bios.

Odd, I just DLed and unzip 169.04 for XP32 bit (Which is what I'm on). Setup claims it can't find any drivers suitable.

EDIT: Seems as though someone bundled their stuff wrong. If you download the INF file separately, then replace the one in the bundle, it will install.

I'm using 174.xx and it works great. I've always been able to overclock, I wonder what makes that some can and others can't

On laptopvideo2go.com , the modded inf isn't included in the rar file you download.

Hmmmm. I'm on AC power, and its on Gaming mode. ATI Lists my Clocks as Core: 169 Mem: 100

Now my CPU doesn't appear to be able to overclock either. Standard mode, gaming mode, and overclock mode list it as 2400Mhz which is stock.

Power saving mode still appears to function.

    Whats the deal with that?

    EDIT: Just ran 3DMark.

    Score: 943.

    Sweet drivers...

Well I'm back on the drivers that came with the computer because they seem to be the only ones that don't read my clocks as 169 / 100.

I attempted to use the newest drivers from Nvidia's page but they failed to install. After replacing the INF file, I got them to install and they seemed to work fine at first displaying the correct speeds. I scored an all time high for my computer of 3800+ on 3Dmark. But then without warning, the clocks went back to 169 / 100 again. And score me a beautiful 1200...

So it would seem that ATI Tool is displaying the correct cores and mem speeds. I have no idea why the drivers are down clocking my GPU though.

    Any help would be appreciated.
