G73JH Q&A Q: What is the average % of units defective or returned for RMA? A: (Asus Rep) Out of the sold G73 units we have only received about 2-3% for RMA in the US and Canada regions. Q: Is it worth it to pay $35 for the TIM upgrade to my cpu/gpu? A: In my opinion not so much. Its not needed the stock thermal material used these days is about equal to AS5, the system is designed to work flawless without needing a better compound. However if you have the money to spare and it makes you feel better then perhaps its a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. Q: Will upgrading the RAM to 12 or 16GB increase the performance? A: Not at all, more ram does not equal more performance. The machine in normal operation will never get even close to using the stock 8GB of ram, only in very specific work environments would so much RAM be used and come in handy and if you needed it you wouldnt be asking this question you would already know you need it. Q: If I upgrade my CPU does it void my warranty? A: Yes there is a seal sticker on the cpu heatsink and if you break it it will void your warranty. This is the same reason you cant self install a better TIM and have to pay $35 for a dealer to do it for you. Note that you can upgrade your hard drives, install TIM on the video card, upgrade RAM, and many other things without voiding the warranty Q: Does the G73 support the Intel 5300 Wifi Card? A: The 5300 uses 3 antennas but can actually work just fine with only 2, so its supported for sure, however its not known yet if the G73 comes with all 3 needed for the 5300 pre-installed. You will not get any performance boost from the 5300 vs 5100 unless your router/network has the proper equipment to take advantage of it in the first place so its a moot upgrade unless you have good reason. Q: Im messing up my typing because my fingers press the touchpad while typing! Any way to fix this? A: Yes I have a good way to fix this, the normal way would be to use an external mouse and disable the touchpad but thats not a good fix. Instead go download this free program called touchfreeze it will prevent your cursor from clicking anywhere else on the screen while your typing so you do not move your type cursor or click a button/ad and mess up your typing. Q: How come I see more hard drives in windows that I have installed in my machine? A: You will see two hard disks in your My Computer section for each physical hard disk installed because Asus likes to partition each drive into two pieces. This is a really great think if you just have 1 drive but you may wish to change the size of each partition or if you have two hard drives in your configuration make it so that each disk only has 1 partition. I found a nice free program that can do it for you that works with Win 7 x64 its called partition wizard - http://www.partitionwizard.com/

oh god. can't wait for this to arrive.

Congrats to all owners pre-ordering I'll be watching for all review. Maybe I'll pick this up again in the future, but in the meantime I'll be tied down to something else more kick arse
-
3rd to post
Haha. Ok, something constructive.....
Hopefully this machine is going to be as sexy as my avatar -
OK I better do it too - 4th to post
Exciting times, finally the waiting is nearly over! Who would've thought shipping would start today after all the speculation about delivery delays earlier this week and last week.
Bring it on!
Edit: OK constructive Hmmm, I am betting that this Asus gaming notebook will be the start / catalyst of a brand new generation of gaming machines. Hopefully other brands will follow suit.
Asus seems to be listening to their gamers with this machine. Power and more power! -
watch me overclocking this laptop to the max.
-
great! new thread n soon to b owners r psyching up...hehehe
overclocking this thing won't spin the world the other way round? =D -

I hope you guys are going to edit your "2nd, 3rd, 4th to post" to something constructive for the first page at some point
-
I am going to have to get special seat belts for when we first power this up. They put a lot of effort into this one to adress specific issues to make it what it is. Who is suppose to get the first one?
I am also anxious to see what happens to the market and product lines once people start reviewing it here. -
Stock up on your tools before your laptop arrives. Rivatuner to adjust fanspeed and possibly clock speeds via Joker's Rivatuner guide.
Everest to monitor your temps (Hwmonitor will not work on Ati cards)
Latest CCC (may or may not work to overclock the m5870).
3dmark06/Vantage.
Fraps to measure in game frames per second. -
Right here with everyone else!!! Can't Wait. Sux I'll be waiting for the A1. Odred from ExcalliberPC. This is before I found this thread and learned of the great customer service from Xotic PC and GenTech.
I did not want to get out of the waiting line and change over.
Sorry guys, You have been great with all of your post. I will definitly be doing business with you in the future!!!
Can't wait to see the benchmarks... But it might make my next week and half longer and longer -
Got THE call today from Justin at Xoticpc; wanting to know if I was willing to change from a A1 to an A2 with Blu-ray drive upgrade. Slightly more expensive (labor?) But I said yes. So I should be seeing it SOOOON. Maybe in time for Valentines?!?
-
0100 1010 0101 0011 Notebook Evangelist
Glad I switched to the A2 as well. I don't actually own one single BR disc, so it's not like it really hurts. Once I see that the early adopters have given the BRD and its software a clean bill of health, I'll order it as an upgrade later.
I also paid for the overnight shipping, so it would be amazing to see that thing show up Saturday! -
EXcaliberPC NOW shows the G73jh A2 IN STOCK
Might just call 1st thing and see if I can get the Saturday Delivery !!! -
Ehy guys wait a minute..if the difference from A1 and A2 is just the blu-ray why A2 is coming before??? I mean, isn't it the same exactly computer(components) except bluray or is there some more?
-
The first shipment of A1's got held up at customs, or so I hear. That's why the A2's got here first. And yes, identical except for the bluray.
-
So do you think it's better change the order and go for the A2? Because I don't know if do it or not..how long do you think does it take for A1 to arrive? Thx...
-
IIRC, A1's should be here by the 17th, possibly earlier. If you change your order to the A2 now, you probably wouldn't get it any earlier. Some of the resellers are calling the earliest orders and asking if they'd like to change over. You can always contact yours and ask them.
-
Ok I guess I'll wait for it. If you know, how long does it take from when they receive it to arrive at home if you have the standard shipping?
-
0100 1010 0101 0011 Notebook Evangelist
Other than the extended warranty, I just left it stock. That's the best chance to get yours out the same day it arrives really. Upgrade the thermal compound at home, buy a cheaper SSD online, and get your lappy earlier. -
-
And, many thanks to Viscious for capturing and transporting all the G73 info over to the first page.
Q: If I am not planning to test the new machine to its limits (or perhaps beyond and melt something one would rather not have melted ), is there a test or bundle you recommend running to test the machine for nominal operation/performance parameters? (This would be in lieu of simply running standard applications/games to see if they more or less work properly.) Hope that makes some sense to you; I'm in new territory here. -
Happy,
Furmark and 3dmark vantage will put a hard press on your cpu and gpu to make sure everything is working well (no flickering/stuttering/throttling).
Everest will make sure your temps are within normal params.. -

Thanks to both of you, I appreciate the guidance and reccomendations...will hope to apply them in the near future. -
I haven't heard anything from Justin, thinking on I'm the 2nd shipment then? Me hopes not ;P Do you think he'd care my birthday is on Monday?
-
-
Had some spare change so I went right back to preordering this LOL Guess I'm back now two new machines incoming! Desktop tomorrow, Notebook..I don't know but if I get it in March I'll still be happy
-
Welcome back to the fold Hydeo!
-
Great to be back
-
Hydeo, your desktop spec looks pretty nasty Too bad I no longer use a desktop (all my jobs can be done on laptop and can't be bothered to walk to another room to access another computer)
-
Unfortunely I require my desktop at home for work and obviously my laptop for going around the country and such. Of course I could of went with a single card solution, but what's the fun in that if I'm not planning to buy another high end desktop for a solid 5 years or so
Oh and minus the monitors the desktop is still cheaper than this laptop LOL -
0100 1010 0101 0011 Notebook Evangelist
Hilarious! So, I call BTOtech just now to see if they are getting any of the A2's in stock. They only show the A1 online so I figured "what the heck". Talked to some guy (Eddy i think) who said without a doubt NO other reseller has the A2 in stock yet. In fact, that model is 3 weeks away, and not even in the country. Nice try Eddy.
-
-
I also called BTO and get the same message. But I believe my order is pushed back into middle of March so I'll probably cancel with Xotic anyways.
I placed an order with ExcaliberPC who say it's in stock and having it shipped overnight. It seems the G73 may come stock with the 1333 (hoping), if not I can just upgrade it at a later time, waiting 1.5 months is going to suck more than slightly slower ram. Once Excaliber is open and I call to confirm the order, I'll cancel the Xotic.
Too bad Asus couldn't meet the demand. I wonder if it was ATi or Asus dropped the ball on this. I just don't see a high demand for high performance gaming laptops.
- Example I play with a very large gaming community and told them I pre-ordered this. Response unanimous.
- Dude those are awesome specs. But it still sucks cause it's still a laptop, lol at you.
- On top of that it's always. You should have got an Alienware. Aren't Sager's better? Asus makes gaming laptops?
- Few who knew, dude, Asus has heating issues with their gaming series laptops. Don't get it!
So yeah even among gaming enthusiast I just don't see a huge demand for these. Considering Asus is such a large manufacturer, I'd place my bet it was ATi that dropped the ball on making HD5870 more available. I don't remember where, but remember reading AMD outsources the manufacturing of ATi chips right? -
It's good marketing, creates a buzz about the product because it's so "in demand".
-
So they create a false sense of high demand by limiting availability. Lame.
-
So we have to wait longer now?I'm going to have to take my laptop back to bestbuy in 2 weeks and exchange it for a diffrent one so I get an extra 2 weeks.
Don't judge me -

I wish I recorded the conversation I just had with Donald at PowerNotebooks.
Edit: Sorry, this isn't the place for that rant. Vic, feel free to delete this post. TIA -
-
-
Along as they start releasing a few and continue the flow, they'll do fine.
I'm with you though, I don't want to wait either, but such is life. -
Vicious or anyone mind explaining the performance difference between the 1066 and 1333 Ram?
I read the FAQ in the lounge forum but that only covered the amount. If this has already been asked I apologize.
Also does G73 support 1600 Ram? I've seen this ram being made available online for laptops. Spending $120 on 4 GB of 1600 might be better I'm thinking. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
-
So Vicious the 1066 may be the best speed for compatibility with software, bios etc? Or 1333 still ok? Cause getting this tomorrow from ExCalibre and spending less can upgrade it to the 8GB 1333 seems more favorable than waiting 1.5 months to sludge through Xotic's waiting list.
Thanks for your quick reply. -
-
-
Vicious, wanted to say thanks for the thread clean-up! My baby is pre-ordered too up here(canada)and i get in on the first shipment (usually a week after you guys in the states) can't wait for this baby!
-
- I'll be cancelling Xotic, and if I need faster ram or HDD I can just order that from NewEgg for less anyhow!
- Would like to say, if Xotic had it in stock I would be happy to do business with them. Their sales department are informative, helpful, very quick. I highly recommend XoticPC, just not for me if the wait time is over a month and can get it now elsewhere.
