You know what solved my problem with frame skips, go to the Nvidia CP and click on restore to default settings. Thats what I did and it worked.

Ok I just went to my control panel for nvidia and seen my settings for my gpu were back to default lol.. this whole time it's been default settings of 500/800/1250. I set them back up and it's still doing the frame skip.. I'm telling you i'm running out of options

195.62. I did a fresh install after I got the computer. Also is the vid card memory dedicated or shared?

It's dedicated. Did you have that problems on system before clean install? Maybe you should do it again(clean install)

Sometimes the screen of the laptop blinks and display like a weird color but just for a second. Do you think my video card is faulty or it needs some component paste just in case? I mean, my old laptop had that kind of symptoms after it died...

Have you overclocked the GPU? This happens to me when I do even the slightest overclock. Sometimes it blinks and displays green or purple color. When I remove the OC everything is normal. I guess my card has zero tolerance to OC, but runs cooler than most 260m GTXs I've seen.

funny thing is it started to happen when I played with the Nvidias original values, and I seet them again to Asus values but sometimes it happens. Its pretty random though, like if i move the slide bar on my browser etc

BTW, if I want to get the laptops audio in my home theater, what cables do I need? And I suppose I have to use the earphone jackets to do that right?

Bought this laptop a week ago and i'm very happy, but I'd like to know something. In the shop where I bought this lappy, they're display model had those blue lights on the back of the screen (logo and a line). Mine aren't lighting up, is there a Fn+key I need to press to put it on or off?

The voltages for the 260m are locked for this laptop right? I tried to see if I could edit the gpu bios but the only options are 0.95 and 0.85 volts with no option to extend the voltage table.

I opened to see if something was burnt but the only thing that was hot was this like silver plated thing.

i think that the VBIOS has to be flashed.

Time to send that gamer in for repair if you are out of exchange period...
BSODs are not Common on these :(

Maybe talk to your retailer and see if they would extend exchange if not then send it out
Try a Clean install as a last resort.

Ok, it turns out it was that the table where I have my laptop placed overheated the vent of the plated thing. I put some empty boxes of headache pills to raise it and get good ventilation to see if that was the problem...

It was because Ive been playing ME ( wanna catch up to play ME2 later ) and its running smoothly now, I guess Ill have to purchase those stands or those pads that keep them cool.

This G72Gx-A1 is a replacement for a G71Gx-A1. It took me two months to get it. Now you're telling me I might have to wait another two months to get another one? Do you realize how angry just the thought of that makes me? Plus, it only makes me more convinced that Asus laptops are trash.

I had my G71 for only three months. And I haven't even had my G72 for a month.

I didn't Know that it was a replacement for anything I thought you'd just bought it.
just trying to help with the current issue and hey i could be wrong? But the Excessive BSOD there's a problem, Seems we have exhausted most suggestions.

Have you had this from day 1?? or did it start sometime after?

Try to remove un-needed junk that's it but clean install is much better.

Well... sure, you might uninstall all the software you don't want from the control panel... but formatting assures you a clean and fresh copy of Windows... Of course this is only an advise (my way to do things), i can assure you that with 6 gb of ram you can have tons of trial software running at the same time before you feel your laptop is going slow...

Well I didn't even get to decrapify it. I spend forever trying to get it online with my Dlink dir655. I am still unsuccessful. It won't even pick it up in the connections screen. My router has always been a pita to connect to thought I must have to much security on it lol. Windows 7 is hard to get used to I can't find anything.

Now I need some help. I still can't get this thing online. I even tried connecting it via cable to my wireless router and nothing. My router is a Dlink DIR 655. My desktop and my PS3 work wireless through it. I can't even get my laptop to find my wireless network at all. It finds everyone else's network ,even down the street. Anyone know what I am doing wrong? I know my router uses WPA2 AES&TKIP, MAC filtering, DHCP ,and must be a hidden network.

Are you running Wireless Console 3? If so, click the tray icon and the popup that has the Wifi/Bluetooth icons should have checkboxes next to each. Make sure both the Wifi antenna and the Blutooth icon are checked. Make sure the wireless switch is turned on on the side. Make sure the NIC's show as functioning in the Network Adapters screen.

I am sure you have probably done most of this but the thing that bit me was the wireless console checkbox. Also did you try the Fn key for the Wifi antenna?

Is wireless console 3 whats on the laptop? I am running it as it came out of the box. I got it yesterday opened it up and tried the wireless first thing. I haven't notice the wifi fn keys yet I guess either. I know in network connections screen all the connections (1 for local 2 for wireless) have the red X by them. I know my router is a Dlink DIR 655 and uses WPA2 AES&TKIP, MAC filtering, DHCP ,and must be a hidden network. Thanks for the help so far. I am going to check it out more when I get home tonight.

I would say thats the GPU. Also, it would cause screen problems. Thats alot of copper heatsinks. I would think them on top of the other heatsink like that wouldn't help much.

Checking other posts, i've found people that literally disarm their laptop, and put some cooling paste between the gpu and the heatsink... they say that by doing this, they get to drop down the heat a lot... it seems that Asus didn't think this "trick" when they designed the laptop cooling system...

    Hey guys.

i've been gone a few days, so I'm going to sit here and play catchup. Sorry if I cover something someone else covered...4 pages or so and I can't remember while typing what I've done...so...here goes.

    Teraclips:

This is quite normal. When running Standard mode..or possibly even performance...but it should only when running Standard...the clock speeds change depending on overall demand. This saves power and produces less heat. It's possible the card is constantly changing clock speed while playing...which is causing your issues. However, i haven't expierenced it..but the newest game I play is AudioSurf.

That's generally normal. When cards switch modes they sometimes do strange things.

    polishhammer:

I'm probably late with this information. I don't know WHERE you can buy one exactly, but it's a model ADP-150NB D. The D might be the plug style...but the model is available online. It's a 19.5V @ 7.7A output with center post positive. By my calculations (voltage*amps) it's 150.15 wattts.

    Eljoka:

No, they're on when the laptop is on, blinking when asleep. No buttons or anything. Either defective controller or someone forgot to plug them up.

    Naldonnis:

Not likely...but basically it means that IF a game happens to want more than a gig of VRAM...it has the ability to pull from system memory. That doesn't mean it's going to use shared memory all the time....only when needed...and I don't think any games use THAT much VRAM, so no worry. It also doesn't cause a decrease in the amount of ram windows sees, unlike cards which actually share ram becuase they lack their own...it's a "as needed" basis and normally, system ram remains system ram.

    isoku:

I don't know about the physical hardware...the voltage table is probably hard coded in the BIOS...but I haven't done enough screwing around or have extra hardware to attempt to fix this. I know on my last laptop (which oddly enough i killed with a botched bios) I was able to remove NIC whitelist and restore some BIOS settings...but again, that was a Phoenix bios, this thing has an AMI...so I just don't know.

    Nakattk:

DLink is crap. That's your problem. If your laptop isn't seeing your router....do you have MAC Filtering enabled? If you've got mac filtering enabled and didn't add your laptop's MAC, naturally, you won't be able to see it. Same problem if you're not broadcasting your SSID. The only other things I can think of is maybe the pantom wireless problem. If your WIFI light is on...it's POSSIBLE there's an incompatibility between the card and router. I had a Compaq router a few years ago that wouldn't talk to a router AT ALL. I had to flash the router with new firmware to fix the issue. If it sees everyone elses router, but not yours, the problem is with your router.

It does....a BIT. Not much, but a little.

    Lyron:

No, Asus did...every computer manfactuer does this...however, they tend to use standard silicone grease...which is the basic white thermal paste. This stuff has a nasty habit of not lasting very long and cooking quickly. What these users are doing is removing this stuff and replacing it (hopefully) with a better quality silver-based paste. I've done this on most computers and it makes a difference. My old laptop ran 10 degrees cooler with a higher TDP processor after switching to a silver based paste.

No, dude, seriously...comon. Those kinds of hacks are for kiddies. The foam just fills in the gap. It likely does very little to secure the drive in to the unit plus it also prevents airflow. Bad idea. Bad mojo. Don't do it.

    Teraclips:

If you've never done it before, removing the heatsink from a laptop is a very dificult and tedious thing to do. Applying the compound has to be done properly or it won't work....you also have to clean all the old compound off properly or it won't work. It's best to have it done professionally if you've never attempted it before...or find an old junk computer and exparment.

*EDIT:* I fixed this problem and figured out the behavior. So you can skip this post entirely...or not. The solution is at the bottom for those that have the habit of just skimming. I'm leaving this here in case someone has a similar problem later.

I didn't want to make this a seperate post...but I discovered this a little while ago...and it's an entirely different issue....so hopefully you'll spare me the flogging.

So, I'll start at the beginning. I'm the kind of guy who likes to keep everything updated..so one of the first things I did was downloaded the reference drivers from Nvidia and installed them. They worked..but two things happened. First of all my gaming performance dropped by a noticeable bit and I lost the ability to switch between the Nvidia/Panel/Off scaling options, it would always default to Panel. Panel is ok, but I've got some older Windows games that run full screen in like, 800x600. Panel scaling is horrrible when jumping the resolution up this far, so I always preferred to use the Nvidia scaling..because it looked so nice. I uninstalled...I hit rollback and reinstalled the driver from the driver CD. Everything installed...the gaming performance was back and I had my scaling options. All I had was a popup upon loading that said something about the control panel first run. I looked that up, tried several things..but couldn't get it to go away. Since everything was running, I just lived with it.

Anyway, the other day I go to boot a game up and notice the graphics were absolutely horrible. So I jumped in to my Nvidia panel and it was on panel scaling. I tried to switch..but it'd default to panel.

So, I uninstalled the Nvidia package and rebooted in to safe mode to run driversweeper and upon booting in to safe mode...it actually installed the drivers for the card. I guess the uninstall method didn't actually get rid of them...and it's beyond me how or why drivers got installed in safe mode.

So here's the questions. First of all...why did Safe Mode install drivers? What's the best procedure for getting rid of all the current driver and driver entries? Also, which drivers SHOULD I install? I'm tempted that since the original OEM drivers were running fine to just install those since I know all my options will work. But I'm wondering just how Asus specific are some of these options? Basically I'd like to maintain gaming performance with the ability to use Nvidia scaling.

Other than that, I've not had any issues with this thing..and I don't consider screwing with the drivers like I have an Asus problem...it's mine.

    Thanks.

*SOLUTION:* A quick Google search solved this after I found the proper search terms. I never did figure out why 7 installs drivers in Safe Mode....breaks all behavior of what I know about Safe Mode. I uninstalled the drivers again in Windows...then immedately ran Driver Sweeper. Booted in to Safe Mode. Safe Mode installed drivers, but I ran DriverSweeper again and it nuked 'em. Booted in to normal mode and was greeted with a low-resolution login screen...SmartLogin logged me in (I LOVE that feature) and after booting the desktop, I discovered it wasn't making any attempts to install drivers, good. I installed a new copy of the drivers, rebooted, no more NVCPL.DLL error upon boot. Went in to the control panel, tried to change scaling....but STILL wanted to revert to panel scaling. After I punched the right terms in to google, I found a post on Nvidia's forum of someone describing the exact same problem. To make my usual long stories short, this guy said it was doing that because at the resolution it was running, there was no need to activate scaling. The advice was to lower the desktop resolution and THEN set the option. So I dropped my resolution down to 1280x800...sure enough I was able to select Nvidia scaling and could see it activate. So I set the thing to no scaling at all, jumped my desktop back to my native resolution and booted up RTCW...which is set to run at 1024x768. I was greeted with a nice sharp game with the panel running with no scaling. But I discovered something else. You can set the option you want at native resolution, the button will jump back but the actual option is set, so it kicks in the next resolution drop. Also of interest is apparently...I know the panel (or the card) does scaling...because when I boot up the first thing that loads is GRUB and I can tell that is being stretched out. Yet, in Windows, the only scaling option that actually works is Nvidia. If I lower the resolution, panel scaling is greyed out.

So it turns out...the thing was working all along, it's just the driver has a funky way of indicating it and stuff. I'm not sure what's up with the panel scaling...that's either a driver or Windows issue. Either way...I'm not complaining about it at this point because I never really used it.

No problem. It sounded from your explanation like you may have been running mac filtering, and that can cause a whole world of "" problems. Glad to know yoou got it working.

I just purchased my G72GX-RBBX05 yesterday and already it's giving me a headache. I'm a casual World of Warcraft player, but these little graphical/sound hiccups are KILLING me and ruining the game play! 8(

What I mean by hiccups, the system kinda hangs...like it's lagging. The sound goes "bwwwrrrrr" like a fuk'n robot and the screen freezes for a split second. Then everything goes smooth again for another minute or two.

I have reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate 3 times already today(my own copy), installed the ORIGINAL Asus drivers and YET IT STILL HAPPENS!! Is this a hardware problem? Or a driver failure?

I've tried the drivers from Nvidia's website (the 195.62 (2009-12-04) one) and the problem got worse!! A pop-up kept saying "nvidia driver failed, windows has recovered..."

The OEM Asus drivers weren't much different ether...so much hang-ups and lag...unbelievable. I can have the graphics set to "ultra" or "very low" and it'd still be the same.

I'm currently running DOX's modified 195.62 drivers, and i'm still experiencing this hiccup.

Lastly, I never sleep my computer nor hibernate it. It's always shut-down and freshly booted.

hey, i finally got to run 3dmark but you know how you have to go online to check the scores if you have the tria version, well i haven't gotten my asus to a internet source yet....tomorrow. well anyway i ran it first time all factory with no probs at all then i bump my processor to 2.2ghz and graphics card to nvidia factory it makes it halfway through the second test and downclocks which kicks me out of 3dmark. i looked at HWmonitor and the highest temp was 84C. my question is if my factory thermal paste is applied really bad could i be getting a hot spot that doesn't show up on the HW monitor causing it to downclock? I did i fresh install of the drivers w/ driversweeper and everything and it still does it. The thing that really confuses me is at factory Asus settings my gpu gets hotter then that by the end of the test and no downclock.

I reinstalled Nvidia drivers (was using Dox btw) to see if that fixes it but i can't test for another few hours. Any other suggestions on what the problem could be?

I know yo sweep the drivers in safe mode but do you install them in safe mode as well?

studdering in games as you described is usually due to the cpu and gpu changing clock. the laptops standard mode is an on demand...as demand chages so do the clocks. try locking your speed with overclock and see if that helps.
