Yes i saw this same exact thing on the G93 review that realtek had to be removed or locked up, so it's not a hardware problem.

I really aprreciate you pointing out the sound blaster, totally forgot to even look at that XD. This forum is awesome, you guys have answered questions, helped me with annoying problems and aren't even getting paid for it lol. I called best buy because asus keeps telling me any questions I have to go to them because it's their version of the laptop. Couldn't find any answers on steam because you have to wait 24 hours just for them to receive your ticket. lol, you guys are amazing!!

I have the dual core version. I don't believe too many PC games out right now fully utilize a quad core, plus it has better compatibility with the PS2 and Gamecube/Wii emulators (PCSX2 and Dolphin). Also the easy overclocking with Turbo Gear Extreme is a plus.

It's looking like more and more games do benefit from more than 2 cores. I've been pretty surprised when they're all listed. Though dual core is fine, but I want a quad darn it! :D

Ok i just put my Quad back in and doing tome tests and not begun under volting it.

I have it @ stock clock speeds to bench it @the lowest stable voltage and Whoa I have Lowered to Full load temp 10c ! :D

    all 4 cores didn't break 59c from avg 69 to 71

Shaved it from 1.2875 to 1.1750V

I have taken a screenshot of a 30 min run on orthos, This makes the laptop run cooler and leaves room for overclocking which i have to find the new limit
    http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/4788/pict1079cpuundervolt.jpg

This will also help the GPU due to less cpu heat also..

    The Quad is Nice!

PS this does not have any difference on IDOL cpu temp because the quad runs @ it's lowest 1.1625V and is under no load.

Did anyone buy this from Gentech, and if so, did you have them put on the fancy pants thermal paste? It's only $15-35, which would be worth it if it helps, although I hate having anyone touch My Precious

This was a bestbuy model quad core online only.

I have Been using ICD7 24 paste. It works really well, It is easy to get to the CPU to do this yourself. or sure they will do a nice job if ken does it.
And i did that run without using the laptop cooler.

Are you in the right thread? The G72gx uses a Geforce GTX 260, so I'd assume that AMD tool would do weird things on it.

Has anyone got a laptop bag for this huge thing yet? I've been trying everywhere and it's the .3 inches that is making it too big for 17" bags :(

I've got an issue that tech support can't help me out on and want to get verification before swapping to a third replacement at Bestbuy. The issue I've had with the first, and then the replacement unit, I noticed while playing the original Mas Effect. When holding a key to pull up the menu it keeps dropping out of the menu at random times ranging from 2 to about 40 seconds. I installed passmark keyboard test and it is doing that with all keys no matter which program I'm using so it's not just mass effect. Basically when holding a key, it acts like I'm letting off and re-pressing every 3 to 40 seconds which makes mass effect too annoying to play. Also noticed it when holding a key to zoom in Half Life 2 so it is either a hardware or driver/bios problem. Have reinstalled all drivers, reinstalled windows, updated all drivers, etc. Is anyone else seeing this or noticed this? Did I just get un-lucky with two bad units with same problem in a row?

That's one of the reasons I'll probably get the A1 version...I swear those laptop bags are sooo small.

Have you tried removing some of that Asus keyboard stuff? That seems like a likely culprit.

The A1 comes with the BD Combo and 1TB of space. The X1 is pretty much the same thing, except it has a DVD Super Drive and 640GB of space.

Yeah, the A1 has Blu Ray, a backback/mouse, and larger hard drives. The X1 adds a quad core CPU and a second hard drive (plus-more importantly imo-a caddy) over the Best Buy x05 model.

I've uninstalled all of the keyboard hotkey, generic, etc. All except KB Filter which I guess is a driver; not sure where to go to uninstall that. Still have the same problem with the key acting like I'm not holding consistently. This is frustrating.

I do not type much on the laptop, mostly use it for gaming. The one thing I've noticed while typing is that it repeats letters and I have to go back and erase a double type like "ttype" often. Not sure if that is related but I think it is. Also, when in a word processor, if I hold a key it will stall, stop repeating, the letter randomly for about a half second. Passmark keyboard test shows a lag time on key presses as well that is fairly random ranging from a couple seconds to about 40 at the longest before acting like I'm letting go and pressing again.

Weird. I agree about clean install of windows. But try the keyboard after reinstalling windows before you will install any keyboard drivers. If everything is ok. It's software problem for sure that could be fixed. But(hope it woun't happen) if problem still there, it could be some hardware problems. Let's hope that it is not.

I did a clean install on the first laptop before returning it and getting the second which is doing the exact same thing. If no one else is having this problem, maybe I did just get unlucky and need to take it back for another? Anyone willing to install passmark keyboard test to see if their G72GX-RBBX05 is doing the same thing? I honestly I don't think I would ever have noticed if it was not for playing mass effect, with their hold a key to access HUD setup, or half life 2, using the zoom mapped to a key rather than mouse.

I appreciate all the help and suggestions!

edit: hmmm... I had Asus walk me through the restore to factory type reinstall which I'm assuming adds all of their drivers too. How do I reinstall windows without having asus drivers and programs on it?

If I'm remembering right, Asus still seems to be shipping 2 restore discs. After Windows is mostly installed, it'll give you this check list of drivers you want to install, and you can just not install them (or skip most of them, etc.)

It was a little confusing if I'm remembering right, but actually gave you exactly the options you'd want, just not explained super well.

Hanso, your situation really reminds me of back when I had my G71Gx-A1. It wasn't as bad as yours, but it was similar. The keyboard would sometimes put more than one character down for the same key, as if I was holding it down a millisecond too long. During gameplay, while holding down the W key to move, my characters would randomly stop and I would have to hit the W key again.

I have no idea why this happened, but they weren't big issues for me. Yours is much worse. I think that you might have gotten a bad keyboard installed.

I'll try it! I'm at work and the Asus is at home and I'm going out tonight so I'll do it tomorrow and give an update. Thank you for help and so so so hoping that will do it!

As far as bad keyboard, this is the replacement for the first that had the same issue but I did buy them at the same store so maybe a bad batch of keyboards?

I've had an awful track record with purchasing laptops and computer peripherals in the past, generally everything I buy pretty much falls apart or crashes. Previously I owned an HP laptop some 4 years ago that the HD failed on, and since then I haven't owned another laptop.

I did some shopping around (was incredibly wary of HP and avoided all of the lower-end laptops like Acer and Compaq like the plague) and I saw this laptop for $999 at a Best Buy store. Out of everything it was more expensive than what I WANTED to pay, but I figured for the added extra money it would be worth it. I was literally getting ready to buy this today when I go out of town to get my truck worked on, but after having read about all of these issues with sleep mode, BSOD, etc I'm starting to second guess it. I don't want to buy a piece of junk that will need to be returned within a week. I do not have the patience nor the time for that.

I am not computer savvy and I am not well read on how to update drivers or fool with things that aren't normally tinkered with. I don't even play 3D-intensive heavy games, I'm a writer actually (which is why I cannot really afford to run into system-crippling problems) so I'll be doing a lot of word processing, but with my job I write about games (older ones on an emulator) and movies/TV shows, so I DO need a system that can at least handle some video editing and "light" gaming and some multitasking with multimedia so I can take screenshots, video clips, etc and use them for my work. If I am not planning on using this to it's "full" potential I guess, am I going to run into any serious performance issues that will prevent me from working?

The battery life doesn't bother me at all, that's why you plug the thing into the wall, nor does the fingerprint thing bother me much either. I need it for work, and work is messy. I like the touchpad, I like all of the media outlets and card readers, it's all fantastic and literally what I needed but if this is going to self destruct or require a LOT of maintenance then I'd like a suggestion on something else that's less of a headache. Unless the updates are "so easy a caveman can do it" I am currently totally disinterested in this machine.

Monsieur, The G series is a gaming line of laptops. That's what the G stands for: gaming. If you're not a gamer and all you're going to be doing is using it for word processing, get an office laptop instead. Also, if you're not very computer savvy, I would stay away from high performance machines altogether because you'll be biting off more than you can chew.

Just as an FYI, I haven't had any BSOD or sleep issues. Then again, I haven't put it to sleep. I've always had bad experiences with sleep, so I never use it on any of my computers. When in doubt, just shut down. I did experience driver problems with my wireless adapter, but I was able to solve it.

There aren't any BSOD issues are there? Anything along those lines was related to sleep modes?

From the description of his/her needs, honestly I think this DOES sound like a pretty good fit. And generally Asus is a good bet, although the G51j/jx and related systems have issues...

I was considering an office or non-gaming model, but I was concerned over the lack of ability to work with projects that may be video-intensive. I watch/rip/remix/edit media on my computer sometimes as a partner to my writing hobby/job so something that would be able to support intense games seems like it would translate well into being able to handle working with large video sizes and multitasking between several open programs.

If that's something that an office computer can handle then I'm impressed. That might actually end up saving me money. :) I just thought office computers were meant for web browsing, PowerPoint, and less intense programs and processing.

edit: I guess so long as I turn off Sleep mode there's no issues? (I'm used to my desktop automatically sleeping after 30 mins of inactivity but I don't intend to leave laptops sitting around.) I didn't realize Sleep amongst laptops was a common error.

double edit: I play games too sometimes, just infrequently and not hardcore. :p When I have the time. ;)

Well, all I can say, is that it's the best mashine I've ever owned. It worth every penny of 999$. Sleep mode issue solved by turning of sleep mode.(it's very easy) BSODs usually caused by VGA drivers, but I haven't heard that someone faced VGA driver issues on Asus stock drivers. I would suggest to buy Cooling Pad to insure yourself of any overheating troubles. That laptop will meet all your needs and even more.
Generally updating drivers is not a problem at all. I must agree with you about touchpad it awesome(supports multitouch).
Asus is known for very good build quality. Problems could happen with laptop of any brand.
Also you can look for cheaper Asus G60 at BestBuy it's the same exept of RAM screen resolution and weaker CPU. But steel that G60 will meet all your needs for 100$ cheaper.G60 will also need cooler. Anyway it's your choice. Hope you will find what you need.

I was hoping you'd reply before my scheduled time to take my truck to the shop. :D They have that model in the store as well (I just called it the "claw mark one" because I can't remember number strings well - this particular laptop in my head was called "the sparkly one"), I was thinking between those two, actually, but since I can afford the $100 more I was leaning towards this model just because of the bigger HD space which means I'd have to rely on my external USB hard drive less.

I do appreciate the help, I'm only good with words not with computers so much - thank you for helping this bewildered Frenchie figure out his predicament. :3

There are a lot of different opinions on what the best driver is for the GTX 260M, but it depends on what you are looking for. If you want the latest greatest stock drivers, you may not get the performance/temps you are looking for, as stock NVIDIA drivers are somewhat lacking. My personal recommendations is Dox 195.62 v1.1. This is the driver I run on my G71.

Some people will recommend the 186.xx line of drivers and while these are good driver and will give you good frame rates, they do not support the new Flash 10.1 or the native DirectCompute/OpenCL/CUDA pieces that were added. I also noticed lower temps with this driver and it did downclock correctly with Powermizer on.

You will also need to install the latest PhysX drivers when you install Dox's version as he does not package the PhysX part of the installer.

    Hopefully that helps.

I still need to get a laptop cooler for my G72. Anyway, do the Dox drivers provide lower temperatures and more performance? Why do I want them?

Dox's drivers do increase the performance. They are faster for about 5-10% in all games than Nvidia's stock. But fro me no temp drop. Idle 50C Load 85C.
    Hope that helped.

Hey guys, I've been reading this thread for a few days after purchasing this laptop last Friday and it's been a huge help. I had the BSOD issue which was easily resolved by doing a reinstall on the drivers as far as I can tell after using Driversweeper and I also had the sleep problem which I solved by changing the system to hibernate in all of my power profiles when I close the lid instead of going to sleep. I was wondering if running the processor at a 15% overclock on the overclock setting will harm this PC in the long term at all? I need it to last at least 3 years. I've also been trying to buy a case but now that I know the exact screen size I'll just go to Newegg. Hopefully the cryo cooler I've been reading about is on there. This is an awesome laptop and hopefully I don't have the loose power cord problem like I did with my Dells and HPs.

Yes Cryo is the one for that laptop! CPU overclocking woun't hurt your laptop. As long as your system stable and temperatures are in normal range. Everything is OK!

Thanks! I was looking for more for something like, socket type for the CPU and video card slot type for possible upgrades in the future...
