I think the FPS drop problem is resolved. I reinstalled the drivers using Driver Sweeper (Thanks Tim4) and surprisingly the temperature of the vga dropped about 7 degrees. I finished playing CoD MW2 smoothly and with VGA at 88 degrees. It seems that everything is fine now. I advise everyone to update the driver as explained Tim4 really make much difference.

I seem to have a problem adjusting screen brightness. I have all drivers such as atkosd2, atk media, atk hotkey, and atk generic function service installed and reinstalled but I am unable to adjust screen brightness. I have BIOS version 0602. Any ideas?

Have you tried switching the power profile in Windows? Balanced and Power-saver tend to make things a little dim. Try manually adjusting or switching to the High-Performance profile.

Also what GPU drivers are you using?

I'm on the standard Asus profile right now but I have tried changing profiles. While I can force a different screen brightness through them I cannot adjust the brightness via the slider in power options nor through hotkeys. I am using the 196.34 modified inf drivers from laptopvideotogo.

I'm still running Dox's 195.62 and have had no issues with brightness adjustment using that driver. Did you try that driver at all? I appreciate NVDIA stock drivers but they are not as good as Dox's modified versions.

One more thing that might be worth noting is that I did NOT install Power4Gear. I actually removed it.

Alright, I tried Dox's 195.62 v1.1 and the settings work just fine now. Thanks guys!

EDIT: It appears I have another problem. My system is fairly new but my GPU tends to hang around 70 celsius idle. I have a gtx 260m and Q9000 intel quadcore - basically one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220669&cm_re=g72gx-_-34-220-669-_-Product

I don't think it's a driver problem since I've tried several different versions already. My cpu idle temp appears to be normal around 40-50 celsius and there's no abnormal activity going on in the background. I'm not sure what else to do. Any help?

Your powermizer isn't working. Download this powermizer switch utility and turn it on.

Thanks. I tried that but it doesn't look like it made a difference. The thing is it still idles around 70 celsius even if core, shader, and memory clock are at 216/432/120 MHz.

Try to open airflow a little bit. Lift backside of laptop a little. Are you using it at table? Normaly this laptop witout cooler idles around 60C. But it can go up till 70C when you browsing(pages with flash animation uses GPU) or watching video.

    Hello! :)
I bought my G72gx laptop about 1 month ago and its pretty awesome, I love it, a nice upgrade from my previous HP laptop, which ended up with that problem where when you turn it on, the leds light turn on but the screen stays black.
So, after looking around I decided to go for the ASUS g72gx because it looked awesome and because I heard ASUS had a good reputation for building amazing high quality laptops.
    However....
There are 2 problems that have really been annoying me :(

    1. For some reason while Im playing there's a big fps drop. Happens very often. The only way to fix it seems to be restarting the laptop. After that it goes on normally.

    2. When Im using the laptop a weird noise starts coming from inside the laptop. The best way I can describe the sound is something repeatedly tapping on a plastic surface. When this happens the laptop freezes up, and the cursor changes to what it looks like when its loading (shiny blue circle thingy). Its only happened 2 times so far. First time happened while I was watching a video, second time happened while I was playing Fallout 3. Both times I had to turn off the laptop by pressing down the power button. When I turned it back on it worked normally.

Why is this happening? Is there a way to fix these problems? Do I have to download something?
I really hope I can solve this without having to return it and get a new one. I still have the warranty but the problem is that I dont live in the US, so returning it would be very complicated.
Thanks a lot for the help :)

I decided to just send it in since it wasn't working as it should. I checked the temps in the bios and the GPU idles around 70 celsius even before windows starts up. Thanks for the help.

First thing about FPS drop seems like overheating. Use HWMonitopr to monitor temperatures. Are you playing on good surface?
Second could be some HDD problems. Do you have 2 HDD? If yes, second one can cause this.

Decided to pick up this laptop and so far no complaints. And as for the temperatures, yeah 70 C are way to high for just idle temps, probably some sloppy work with the thermal paste. Seems like normal for these cards are around 60 C idle. Could be that the quad core adds some additional heat, remember form my desktop that it ran a bit hotter then the Dual Core. Hope it works out.

Sounds like hdd issues. Some hdds are louder than others, but the sound shouldn't cause the computer to "freeze" so try running a check disk program to find out if there are any errors on the drive. FPS drops can be caused by so many things, bad drivers, temps going to high, or it could be related to the hdd problems. Monitor the temps when you play, if that isn't it reinstall drivers.

    dear fellas,

I'm planning to buy a G72 from bestbuy.com. I feel the spec, design and price all so wonderful, except the weight, but I can deal with that.

The only thing that bothers me a little bit is that, I'm from Singapore. We do have ASUS here but not this model. So can any of your G72 owner above take a look at your product warranty information and see if there is any word like "international warranty"?

Based on my past experience using a couple of laptops, as long as it works when I first purchased it, it will live through the warranty period, and longer. But this is my first gaming laptop, which can be hot, and Singapore is very very HOT, all year around.... I hope that's not the reason ASUS didn't introduce this model locally.

No, It's not the reason for sure. You are always can buy good cooler for your laptop. I am playing on mine when room temp are around 26-28C. And my max temp with cooler is 86C at overclocked frequencies. That good.
About warranty as I know, laptops from Best Buy have 1year Asus warranty. And it's 1year of worldwide warranty. At least our local Asus representatives said so. (I am from Kazakhstan) Pay attention, If Best Buy woun't give you warranty card, warranty still will be valid. It will start from day when your laptop came out from factory.

Ok, I'll monitor the temperatures and see whats up. I play on a flat wooden desk and I only have 1 HDD.
Btw,how high should the temperature be to be considered overheating?

Yuzna, your post scares me. I really hope its not hdd problems :(

    Thanks guys :)

Ok, Ive been monitoring the temperatures and here's what I got:

Taken before playing mw2, just doing normal stuff:

Taken when the fps drop started:

Taken after restarting the laptop and playing mw2 for around 2 hours and had no fps drops:

Note: I wasnt using the overclocking utility, and battery was at standard settings.

I'll try reinstalling the drivers and updating the bios with the ezflash and see if that works.
    Thanks

I think this is the VGA driver issue. You can see that temperature are low when FPS drop occures.

    Hi Tim, Hi guys...

I bought my G72gx a month ago at Best Buy... The first game I played was Borderlands, and intuitively when I got the FPS Drop problem I rebooted and I finished the game fine.

Recently I've been playing WM2, TimeShift, L4D2 and since most of the time I'd just put it to sleep, I started having the problem more often. So I started researching because it became a really frustrating experience. You know... $1500 put in a "gaming" computer that I couldn't use...

I've been monitoring temps and when gaming the GPU core temp goes up to 85C that's when the problem arises. After exiting the game it goes down to 61C.

Tim, I tried your suggestion last night and wiped clean the nVidia drivers and installed the 196.34 from laptopvideo2go with the modded inf. The games worked fine after rebooting but when I tried sleep mode again, frames dropped. But this time when I tried to reboot it I got the infamous BSOD on file "nvlddmkm.sys" with an error stating "An attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed"... so I got into safe mode and reverted to nVidia's 195.62 that I had before and now everything is normal.

So, that's my story. I'm just hoping ASUS comes up with a fix to the problem because it kinda sucks... when I step out of my game I wanna be able to just close the lid and go, since I'm always in a hurry...

If you guys know of any other fix/work around, please let me know. Actually, I've read that cooling mats could help... but I don't want to spend more money.

It looks like it is the GPU downclocking at exactly 82C. It appeared in the G71GX series and was partially fixed by a BIOS update. It still appears after sleep mode. Check if it only happens when waking the laptop from sleep mode and gaming. It is cured by a restart or disabling sleep mode.

    Hello,

I am on the verge of buying this from Bestbuy, but I have a question about the external cooler issue:

I am definitely going to get one. I simply do not know which one... so far, I've found that the "NZXT ACC-NT-CRYO-LX" (xD) is one of the best choices, but I've read that it can actually increase the heat of some laptops because of the way the fans work.

Does someone here know if that will happen with this model? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B2+Duo+Processor+-+Black/9556125.p?id=1218124208054&skuId=9556125

Hello and welcome. Don't be afraid to buy Cryo it works perfect for this laptop.

Yes there are some. Known problems:
1)Overheating issue.(well solved with external cooler)
2)Sleep mode issue which caused FPS drop(still not solved completly. Best solution turn off sleep mode)
3)Some say that wheight and size of ot is not suitable. For me not a problem at all.
Screen for me fine. Resolution exelent for screen size. Viewing angles is not so good. But when you looking straight to it it's superb.
    Hope I answered your question.

Elohin, apparently your powermizer is not working and your GPU stays at it's max all the time. You should download and install the powermizer switch utility which can be found here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=273276

Your Quad CPU also adds a lot of heat to the GPU. Personally I think that the cooling design of Asus is highly inadequate for Quads.

Hey guys Just I have started Thread in the main area researching the possibility of upgrading to the new ATI 4870HD and MXM compatibility

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=457716

Anyhow i Own the 09 Q9000 Quad that i recently put a X9100 Cpu and even with the Quad over clocked to 2200 and the Video set to stock Nvida specs 550/950/1375

I can game on it for 2 hrs no Down clocking or FPS drops :)

I know that i can simulate this only when i put the computer to sleep then play for aprox 30 min then i will see fram rate go down to 3 or 4 fps them even though GPUz says that it's still at normal clocks they are now.

I can only fix with a reboot then i can play for hours No issue, I used to Sleep in between games thinking it's gonna be cooler and better I disables it and have not had frames drop If you want it off then shut it down or leave it.

Other think i have found with the latency issue i know someone found that disabling the Battery controller does it and yes it does but you loose tray power options ETC

I can get the same result by removing the battery without turning off ACPI Battery controller and Latency is perfect.

Otherwise im happy with it I would also like the New G73 But that will have to wait and make the best of this machine for now :D

Did you restart the system as the program asked, after you chose the powermizer to be turned on?
Because from your screenshot it is obvious that your GPU stays at its max clocks 500/800 Mhz. The powermizer switch worked for everybody so far and when the GPU idles the clocks go down to 120/200 Mhz which decreases the temps significantly. My GPU idles at 50C without a cooler, but I'm with the P8700 CPU which is one of the coldest CPUs ever. As I said the Quad can add some 5-10C to your GPU temp because of their proximity. So your normal idling temp should be below 60C.

    Hello again.
So apparently it is as you guys said, the fps drops happen after sleep mode. I just updated the BIOS from 302 to the new 602 version, but dont have time to test if it solved the problem. Ill try to do it tomorrow.
Another thing, about the drivers, I can just uninstall them with add/remove programs and then using the driver sweeper right?

This is such an awesome laptop, I can play games I couldnt run with my other laptop, and the ones I could look prettier. Would be perfect if it wasnt for these annoying little things.

    Anyways, thanks! :)

Hey I just picked this up at Best Buy; and so far so good.

I only have a dual core, and I'm wondering; can I get a quad core in the future?

If so, what do I look for?

Totally agree with you!!!Awesome laptop. Have you seen my gaming performance review? Link in my signature.

What do you mean to format laptop? To make it as it was from factory? If yes you need to run Windowas recovery from your hidden partition. Press F9 during booting.

Hi and welcome. Glad for you. I am not sure about quad. Best solution for gaming still fast dual core. Because majority of modern games not optimized for quads.

Well, for Quad and Win7 it might be close to normal. I have both - Vista and Win7 and in Win7 my GPU idles at 55C and in Vista - 50C. But again I have the much colder P8700 CPU. It has also something to do with the Aero in Win7 that utilizes the GPU most of the time thus increasing the temp.

Thanks rider... well, what I did was:
    1. uninstall current drivers
    2. get in safe mode and wipe it with DriverSweeper
    3. got into normal mode (windows7 tried to detect and reinstall my drivers)
    4. ran the 196.34 setup with admin permissions
    5. rebooted again
    6. tried the sleep mode with games... it hung up...
    7. rebooted and got BSOD
    8. uninstalled 196.34
    9. safemode again to wipe 196.34
    10. in normal mode installed 195.62
    11. rebooted

I am now getting BSOD after sleep mode... So I will try:

    12. wipe clean 195.62 with DriverSweeper again
    13. try to reinstall 195.62 without letting Windows7 install anything...

    Any ideas?

I like you also went through many many many drivers and powermizer switches and still idles around 60 celsius.

I even downclocked the gpu to the lowest possible settings with nTune and still same 60 celsius.

To be brief, There is nothing you can software wise to cool it less than around 55 celsius with stock cooling because the heatsink is shared with the cpu, thus even if gpu is cool cpu will always be hot so gpu will get hot too.

So now we just have to live with it. But don't worry about temps too much, it won't damage the computer since Asus designed it this way.

EDIT: Also sorry for misleading you about fixing the "problem". I thought it was fixed because I was in power saver mode in Turbo Gear, so since the cpu was downclocked it was cooler and thus gpu temps dropped and idled around 55.
