Smart remarks aside, no I do not work for ASUS marketing. While I am a computer tech by trade, I have not done anything to this laptop aside from install a fresh version of the OS using F9.<--- so what happen to your factory installed os if your computer was running with no problems??
just asking is all.
and cod4 is not capped

drivers and bios.
but also..asus had issues running one at the cebit show. talking about it was over heating...wrong place to be over heating. cards not running in crossfire... that did not look to promising to people watching it bench 10k, when the guy that hit 20k was supposedly at the show as well....can any one find clarification to this??? -
i was quoted and adressed to as an liar, so this was my reply: trying to find out, if there is realy one w90 without the issue, or if there is not.
if one machine runs without problems, and it is a driverrelated problem, like asus said, then why not taking the drivers/image from this guy? although i barley can imagine, that not all delivered systems have the same backup-image. -
Things we know:
- a single card runs without lock ups using the 9.2 drivers
- system doesn't lock up on battery power
- TurboGear is down-clocking the system RAM to 667Mhz
- the system crashes after hibernating
- PowerPlay will lower the power going to the cards when the system is idle
If PowerPlay and TurboGear are lowering the power to the system it would explain why a single card and running on battery don't have lock-ups since those usually mean the system is using less power.
As for the fix ASUS has been suggesting removing TurboGear and performing an F9 reset on the system which makes me think the reason for doing that is to reset PowerPlay and TurboGear's down-clocking. And that would mean the reason why the problem keeps coming back is because of PowerPlay.
Otherwise I can't figure out why reinstalling the same drivers over and over again would fix anything.
Anyway this is all just random thinking and it might have nothing to do with nothing but something to try would be to disable ATI PowerPlay which I think can be done in CCC (I'm not sure where tho). Another thing might be, if it's possible, to set TurboGear to a setting where it's not downclocking or overclocking the system. -
This is an X38 board, if I had the notebook with these problems first 2 things I'd remove were any system-provided power / clock management and I'd go straight into the BIOS and check what the settings were. In the week or two I haven't seen anybody take pictures of their BIOS to post here so we can try some troubleshooting.
-
gonna have to agree with jlbrightbill....some one needs to post some pictures of the bios. see if it is a standard locked down bios or what...could be something as simple as the dep enabled..who knows....any pictures would be welcomed.
-
Wonder, I read previous post saying that one card is not running
This is probably true for older version of AMD driver, especially most games are supported by Nvidia, thus one graphic card may not run (I read a review of AMD 4870X2 (not crossfire, X2 in one board), and they realise something wrong with real life benchmark, thus they conclude that one core is not utilize properly.)
This board still use 8.5xxx Catalyst right? -
I also like the W90Vp, just want to make sure the time I can (really, Right now I Can't) bought it, it is going to be Perfect.
That's the reason some of us here...
Striker, I wonder if you disable some driver from device manager properties (such as what, the Turbo VGA Driver things or ACPI power management), is it going to lock-up? I wonder if it is available there... -
yep, it's a nice laptop, but issues hinder it's going forward. before i consider a laptop working, it has to run all my software and not just one program. if it has issues with any of them, then that's when i start to take a closer look...
if you can get madmech to run some of the programs you guys run and see if his system stays solid. this too would also help in trying to narrow the problem down. considering his is problem free. but coming in and stating your machine is problem free to the others that are having serious issues is also like slapping them in the face and saying oh well..you got a lemon and i didn't. (two way street) you guys need to get together and start running all the same programs to help get a better understanding of what is going on..us outsiders who don't have w90s can only go so far with helping. we dont see the same things as you. and can only give suggestions and advice... -
Here is a video I made of every section of the BIOS.
If there is a section of the BIOS I did not cover here, let me know and I will cover it.

I'll agree that the drivers suck, but I haven't had any hard lockups since formatting the hard drive and doing an install from a Vista x64 SP1 disc. I've had plenty of glitches, but I have yet to see it hard lock like it did with the original OS image. I've installed everything manually, but I left out the Turbo drivers and the Symantec AV stuff (which is bloated garbage). I am able to complete as many runs of 3DMark 06 as I please. Those of you with an available Vista disc, give it a try. You can use the key on the bottom of the laptop, but you have to activate by phone.
-
Oh, the only drivers I installed differently were the latest chipset and SATA drivers from Intel's site.
-
Anyone have some pictures of the power brick?
And is it confirmed that No TurboGear = No Lockups? -
For those of you without a Vista disc, I'm willing to make a copy and send it out to the first person, if you guys are willing to ship it around to each other.

It's the one in the middle. To the right is Asus M70V1 power supply and to the right is iPhone for size comparison.
-
what version of the vga driver?
-
-
did 8.11 or 8.12 crash as well?
-
that tech would need to know how to edit the inf for that to work.
you need to add this these strings to the new 9.2 inf
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_945A&SUBSYS_027E1043
or in it's place
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_945A <---safe install if im not mistaken.
your going to have to add this line to the 64 bit inf
i download the 32 bit, so i have to check on the 64 bit....give me a few minutes. need to see if it's just one place or multiple places it should go. -
and here goes part of the reason why...
8.5 = working
"ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2" = ati2mtag_R7X, PCI\VEN_1002& DEV_9441
9.2 = not working fully correct
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002& DEV_945A&SUBSYS_027E1043
speculation of course and i can't test it out my self. they look the same though.
[ati2mtag_M9x]

AddReg = ati2mtag_Mobile_SoftwareDeviceSettings
DelReg = ati2mtag_RemoveDeviceSettings

AddReg = ati2mtag_Desktop_SoftwareDeviceSettings
DelReg = ati2mtag_RemoveDeviceSettings

so im thinking one of these is not the right device id.
so: add this to cat 9.2 and it should technically work.

Here is my 3DMark score without Turbo.
I will do one with Turbo later but now I have to make a coffee and change my sons diaper lol.
-
-
first part is to get the drivers working right, so you can take them out of the equation...
nice scores madmech.
side note...still not beating a dual core ocz whitebook/alienware/nagamaki with 3870's.. -
hahahaha.
same here. i got 2 boys. 10 and 11 and i remember them diaper days... -
The bizarre thing is that even using the modded 9.2 drivers from before that made these games work, they are ineffective now. As far as I know, the system is in the same state as the last time I successfully used 9.2. But now the games will not run, only giving me that error message that the game stopped working. Does anyone have any ideas where I can go from here because I'm stuck with this unit until Asus or newegg gets one to exchange for. -
Rep for John for being so helpful even though he doesn't own a W90.
-
You need to RMA that thing firebird plain and simple . Your issues seem to go far beyond everyone elses like BSOD etc . You could have bad memory or a bad video card or both . Its amazing how patient you have been
-
For reference, this is the driver string in the W90 drivers I got directly from Asus' site:
(;----------0811132323-8.551.2-081109a-071842C.3)
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_945A&SUBSYS_027E1043
I used that string in the drivers I gave firebird34, and I also tried using R7x instead of M9x, and neither worked.
For those still experiencing lockups, go into your BIOS, Advanced, TurboGear, and set "Disable One Graphics Card" to "Enabled". This should boot into Windows with 1 GPU, see if it fixes problems. If not, enable 2 again, then go back and disable TurboGear in the BIOS, and try again. -
Edit: BTW, when some new units are available, do you guys think I'd be better off getting the RMA from newegg or from Asus? Thanks. -
test the memory...
&SUBSYS_027E1043
you know how they come out with different variations of the card..this may be for your gddr5 and not gddr3 (speculation of course. )
again, thanks for the input!!

electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
If Nvidia can die shrink their last gen cards and still equal or beat ATI's newest solutions based on their most modern GPU?
Hmmmm -
And I got a name change. Someone wasn't using it. lol
Good luck with fixing the issues.
Asus North America is getting somewhat screwed over by their Asiatic research and testing counterparts. -
So, I shipped it out today.
Sigh...
Bye bye W90... I'll miss you. -
make that one, you change your name to dtwn? how did you do that?? -
-
yeah...i understand that, but ummm...we are in the testing phase so trying what is not on their site may also prove useful....just a suggestion and not a what you should do...
i still don't have my ati laptop back so i can't try any of this stuff yet.
well this is interesting...
ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 4850 X2

944B
ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 4870
M98
945A
8.5 = working
"ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2" = ati2mtag_R7X, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_ 9441
9.2 = not working fully correct
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2" = ati2mtag_M9x, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_ 945A&SUBSYS_027E1043 <----technically this should say 945B for x2
looking more and more like 4850 drivers (speculation)
http://developer.amd.com/drivers/pc_vendor_id/Pages/default.aspx -
PS: Really curious as to what it is you do, john -
Hopefully the EGG gets more of these back in stock soon. i didnt think it was going to be as long as it has been for them to get a restock, but hopefully its because of the issues they have had there not shipping more till they(asus) get it right. When i looked on there website abit ago i saw it was in the top selling category of laptops, so they had to have shipped out quite a few of these machines already . As for the card being a 4850++ ill be happy to have a machine that has 2 of them in there
-
-
ahhh, thanks. nah..im gonna keep my name. it's on everything i do
me, im into computer repair/sales/service & networking/laptops/desktops/servers/virus removal/data recovery/spyware & adware removal/problem solver/software trouble shooter/driver trouble shooter/ and quite a many other things. this iswhat i do for a living. 24/7
see that car in my avitar.... it has 13 screens(6 of them being 10.4" flip downs) and a 15.4 inch laptop mounted in the front running everything. that was one of my projects. -
That explains your interest in the W90.
Running stability and temp tests on my new CPU right now. Thanks for the 3dmark06 key. -
i hate to see people with a new machine not performing where it should be. and just because the manufacture says so, doesn't make it fact. plenty of stories around here proving many of manufactures wrong when it comes to performance.why should now be any different', right?
your welcome!
what new cpu? that q9450?? -
Yep, had some free time today, so I cleaned out the fans and tossed in the new CPU. Had some issues with GPU drivers for some reason. Think that problem's licked. Just running stability tests and temp tests for now. New CPU runs hot, AS5 still burning in. -
really? how hot? and how warm is the room temp?
-
Room's about 70s I think. Maybe cooler. Running a set of tests with GPU memory and core clocks up by 50 mhz just to see if there's any change in 3dmark06 and temps. -
Wouldn't it be 944A for 2 individual single GPU 4850s since 944B is the single-PCB/dual-GPU 4850x2?
I wonder what would happen if there was a mobility 4850 bios you could flash these cards with. -
looks like this thing has some issues..eh? I think I'll be holding off a bit..
