As explained above, no problem, nothing special needed and quite a common setup. I would not use this to play games as video memory and performance may get hammered depending on game and external resolutions used. Photoshop editing is a biggie with dual monitor, or more, setups.

Yes, we have two GPU's but only one active at a time, not like some special desktop video cards. For word processing, your choice, for more demanding use the nvidia. AFAIK only the nvidia was able to drive the HDMI port on these machines but both can drive the VGA port.

Sorry if this has been posted before. Don't really have the patience to read 125 pages. What's the safe operating temperature for the processor and graphics card? When playing borderlands at native res and everything low or off, the processor hits 55-60C and the graphics goes to 81C. I understand this will hurt lifespan, but is it safe for the short run? Nothings going to burn out, melt, or otherwise blow up?

Your running a bit high on the GPU but OK as 100C is slow protect. In OC I'm hitting 73C on GPU and 70C on CPU leaving HW monitor running in background playing Borderlands. IMHO, I don't like anything over 85C but see some crazy temps on the gaming rig posts.

I'm playing in a cool room, 70F, so ambient will have it's effect.

Anyone know where to find a service manual for the UL80VT? I have a bluetooth module I'd love to install yet I am a novice laptop mechanic.

Where did you get the bluetooth module? Is it internal? I didn't know that was possible.

I have the same setup, myself. I've hooked up my UL80 to a Samsung P2570, and I'm using the Logitech MX5500 keyboard & mouse combo; together, it's a pretty spiffy quasi-desktop :p. If you take advantage of the HDMI-out the UL80 offers, then you'll have to use the NVidia dedicated graphics card.

I usually just use the P2570 as the sole screen, because it's got 1080p resolution. If you were to have shared screens, you'll be viewing the desktop on the monitor at the UL80's native resolution instead, so things may look a bit block-like.

Do you have any problems with the laptop going to sleep if the lid is closed? Mine seems to do that while I have it connected to my TV through HDMI. I've already changed the lid actions to do nothing.

I have formatted my UL80vt computer and I have not installed Power4gear because I dont really need it, I just installed ATK and that is it.

I have the latest nvidia driver from nvidia website.

But now computer seems very slow to me for some reason, is there something important I am missing?

ugh, so today my display drivers stopped working for no reason. My restore points are only from today, so I can't go far back enough for when it was working. I changed nothing, it just says the devices failed. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but no luck. Also, on nvidias website they don't have a page anymore to download g210m drivers, it's says this page does not exist, so I can't try that. What do I do to fix this?

Can anyone speak to the build quality of the UL80vt? I'm seriously considering purchasing one, but most of the reviews I see talk about a very low quality manufacturing. However, many of said reviews were given back in November of '09, and a few more recent reviews haven't mentioned anything of the sort. For those of you who have purchased in the past month or two, has Asus addressed and solved the issue, or should I still be concerned?

I bought mine some months ago, maybe in January, and it has always been fine. I've heard people say it creaks, or the keyboard flexes when they type, but I don't have these problems at all. I can't make it creak even if I try, and yes I have tried pressing right where others say it creaks for them. The keyboard feels solid, and just feels natural to type on. I'm used to typing on a Logitech G15, and this laptop's keyboard is big enough that I can easily type on it without looking at the keys or accidentally pressing more than one key. The keyboard doesn't flex when I type on it, but if I press hard enough I can see a small amount of flex, but I don't know a laptop that doesn't do that when you push hard. It feels totally fine to me. It's a very good laptop. It's thin, light, looks sharp and clean, and has very good battery life. If you like the specs of the laptop and the price, go for it. I'm very happy with it.

I've had my UL80VT since December. I've had a few minor annoyances with respect to build quality, but nothing major. A creak here and there, and nothing more than that. I think the issues have been overblown by a few people getting a lemon. Other than that, there have just been minor complaints, which is nothing compared to how great the laptop is.

Agree with the above, I think that it is a mix of (a) one or two people getting bad units, and (b) one or two early reviewers being extremely picky about build quality.

Go into a store and check one out in real life before purchasing, if you are a stickler for build quality. If not - just buy one.

Is it on the integrated graphics by mistake? Do other games work? I have no idea why it doesn't play right for you because it's not a hard game to run at all, so it's probably something wrong with the game. Maybe reinstall it, or contact steam support about it. They've helped me with game problems like that before.

Has anyone else had any problems with the power adapter for their UL80VT? About 4-5 times now I've noticed that the light turns kind of yellow instead of green and gets really hot. So hot that I can only hold it in my hand for about 15 seconds. It still charges fine, and if I unplug it, and then plug it back in, it's fine. Every time it has happened the battery was below 50%.

And one more question: How capable is the Ul80vt as a low level gaming platform? I know the GPU is decent for most things, but does such a low level processor keep it from going anywhere?

The ULxxVT models are all quite capable as casual gaming platforms. Obviously you cannot expect 'Ultra' settings on all of the newest games, but you will be able to play most of them with moderate settings at acceptable frame rates.

If you are curious to know if it can play certain games that you are interested in, I suggest searching on YouTube for videos of the game being played on the ULxxVT.

Personally I have seen CoD: MW2 played, Borderlands, Starcraft II Beta, WoW, and BF: BC2 all played on the UL series and the performance was exceptional.

Has anyone ever had issues with installing the Nvidia 8.15.11.8688 drivers on their UL80Vt's? I am currently having issues and getting a Code 39 error message in the Device Manager saying the driver is missing or corrupted and the max resolution I can get is 1024 x 768. I have tried installing the driver in the regular desktop and Safe Mode and nothing seems to work. I have also tried doing a total System Restore and still nothing works.

I noticed the issue started after I got some kind of error message when waking the computer out of hibernate. Something about not being able to write the hibernate state to a file.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.

Have you tried "system restore" to the date before you experience the hibernate issue, then re-installing drivers?

    cheers.

Well count me in the (a) group. I was most likely one of the first people to get this laptop. While I still have the laptop the keyboard does still drive me crazy with jingling. I did send it back to Asus for jingling on the left side when I type and they sent it back to be jingling on the right rather than the left.
Just so you know, I have a few friends who have the same laptop and their keyboards are fine, it is just mine that exhibits this. I guess I should pack it up and send it back in again.

The keyboard is ultra thin. You may want to push in the 4 locks, raise keyboard up and place a thin piece of electrical or silver tape under that side.

There lots of pictures in the lighted keyboard mod if you feel up to it. However, Asus will do you good, if you can wait for the turnaround. Edit; sorry I see that you have sent it back once

You did a total restore? I did a clean install and no problems. If you search back through the forums; I saw some posts in cleaning out all traces of the old drivers before re-install of same. There are further post on the first ul30vt dealing with these drivers. The code 39 error has been posted before.

I get random failures when using hibernate as well. For this reason I only use shutdown or sleep depending on work and travel time.

    Anyone?

I used the system restore DVD that came with laptop. I am assuming that the disk formats the OS partition and then reinstalls the factory image, but I'm not sure. I did see some discussions in the UL30VT threads about video driver installs but it seems everyone is talking about getting the latest nVidia drivers to work. I will keep checking though... thx for the info. I ended up RMA'ing the comp to Asus since its a month old and hopefully it will come back in one piece! :)

I also saw in your signature that you are using the new Seagate hybrid drive. Is installing a new HDD a simple issue of plugging in the new drive and using the System Restore DVD?

This is why Asus needs to supply everyone with needed full system disks and proper documentation

I was only provided with the Utility/Driver disk, so..

I used the digital river copy of W7HP, a 4G USB drive and the included Driver Disk V2.0. I gathered all info from these forums and everything went like clock work with zero cost.

In the past I always used a DVD drive so wanted to try the USB thumb drive method. I did use an external DVD drive for the Driver disk, which is still IMHO, a more convenient way to go unless you have an image of the driver disk or try to download all needed driver files from Asus.

Anyway, once all is gathered, installing a new drive is easy :D

Honestly, I have no doubt they would fix it. In fact I even had a RMA to send it in the second time, then I didnt send it. I have thought about pulling up the keyboard and trying some tape, may do that soon. I had heard the clips holding in the keyboard are somewhat fragile but that was months ago. There is probably more info out there now on how to pull the keyboard up, so you are right, I need to try that!

Has anyone had any luck installing an OCZ Agility SSD in a UL80vt-a1? I tried, but the computer would not recognize that a drive was plugged in. I RMA'd the drive to OCZ, they sent me a new one, same problem.

You have to use your built in windows management to format and assign a drive letter to it if they are like standard blank hard drives.

That sounds sweet. Did you have to format the drive beforehand and have you noticed a bump in performance?

I found things could get a little laggy when opening an app that hasn't been cached w/ factory HDD. Thinking of doing the same upgrade if it can make things a little snappier.

Asus has just released the System restore disks for the UL30vt, $30!

I can't figure out where these disks are supposed to go

Does your version of the restore disk install all the bloatware?

Hi :D just joined this forum, my UL80VT arrived today, the one with 1.2Ghz processor as it's the only one out in the uk, first impressions, love the aluminium finish, only complaint is that the screen is quite flexi, when i shut it, its not flat and the end rubber grips dont touch the keyboard surface like a trough :S anyone else have this? or is it just me :( i was like get in when i first thought i had the turbo boost processor as the plastic thing covering the screen had the 33%+ boost on, also my background had the option to slide it on, but it didnt do anything damn :p loading my account was quite slow, but thats expected with all the bloatware on which im gona spend time now to remove some of it, pretty happy with it so far, just the stupid flexi lid :p

also for some reason on My Computer I have 2 partitions, C Drive is named OS and is 70 something gb with it half filled while the D drive is called DATA with 208 gb which is empty, anyone know how i use this?

You can go a couple of ways depending on you. Welcome!

Some users only install the OS on C with applications and work files on D. This makes it quicker to wipe the OS for quick install.

Me? I like multiple portions but not on same physical drive for my own reasons. I use W7 built in partitioning software to make one logical C: drive.

If the physical drive fails, then chances are your logical drives, partitions, may be toast.

My restore disks install everything ASUS related so yes, all bloatware included. It is painless enough to customize everything once you have it installed and remove what you don't use.

You can use the ASUS disk to partition your drive the way you want as I make mine use a single partition for everything.

No speed issues here, I really like the crisp performance of my machine. The Momentus XT really does add some good gains and if you do repetitive tasks you will see even further speed improvements. No format needed for install.
