So far no solution for the subwoofer noise? It's driving me crazy...

I have this problem with my N56VZ too. It's exactly how you've described it, one moment I'm typing an email, the next moment the laptop has just completely powered off by itself without warning. I've done the RAM test - RAM seems fine. Checked the temperature - it's usually around 45 degrees when I surf web, read emails - so that's fine. Anyone else have this problem? Or know how to fix it?

I'm reluctant to take it in for warranty repairs as ASUS will charge you for it if they can't duplicate the problem. Given this happens so randomly - I've gone up to 2 months without the problem appearing - I think it's most likely I'll be charged if I take it to ASUS.

Have you checked other temps like the chipset?

Have you tried installing batterybar or a similar program to check battery wear? I dont know why but sometimes my battery wear goes around 40%.. And it turns off suddenly without notice, thinking there's no more power left.
With a few charge cycles, the battery wear goes back to normal, around 10%. I think it might be a software issue with the battery reading, causing it to think there's no more power left and turning it off.

    Hey bbluto,
I've got the exact same quesiton, and actually took it a step further and tried swapping out the stock Atheros AR9485WB-EG with an Intel Centrino Dual band M-6200 (intel 622ANHMW). I have the ASUS N56VJ-RH71 (exact same motherboard as the N56VZ, just the Canadian Model with 750GB HD and 8GB DDR3 RAM), after putting the battery back in, screwing in the cover, my Windows 7 Ultimate picked up the driver for the new Wifi card, but kept giving the 'This Device cannot start Code [10]" issue.

Tried resetting BIOS, updating Intel Drivers to newest ones from support.intel.com site, and updating BIOS on Asus Mobo - no dice, still stuck at 'This device cannot start code[10]'. I poked around BIOS and made sure that CMS was enabled, and secure boot disabled (as done when I upgraded my HD).

Also tried manually uninstalling drivers and putting in older drivers - no dice. Tried 4 separate versions of drivers. At this point in time, that probably means I have too many different .sys files floating around in my Windows directory.

Two things I pondered about this:
    1. This SHOULD work, as the ASUS unit allowed me to boot into Windows, and found the driver. Typically, an HP model (or like minded model) would stop immediately at POST and say something about internal configuration changed. So by that logic, it should mean you can replace the wifi card without issue.
    2. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate. Not standard for this configuration, but there's a much larger driver database to pull from (the N56VZ series Win 7 laptop drivers work just fine on this model; including backlit controls).

At this point, I'm going to try to reformat back into Win 7 Ultimate, and see if some hidden config gets blown away and allows me to use the Intel Card. I'll repost back here with results when that gets done.

BTW, for anyone reading I love the Intel Cards with Dual band. Using a 5Ghz in perfect conditions (close range, proper auth model, no other interfering devices) gives me up to 36Mbps transfers to my NAS. It's pretty awesome on my HP elitebook 8460p.

    Hey Liviu,
I replaced my DVD-ROM with a SilverStone TS209 HD Caddyso now I have a 120GB SSD for my primary disk, and the stock 750GB as my secondary disk. Works great! Didn't have to change anything in BIOS either, just picked it up as a new drive and away I went. The Silverstone mentioned up there is a 12.7mm, but I'm sure where you can find a 9.5mm that'll work for you, try looking at NewModeus, they used to be my go-to for HD caddies for any model of laptop.

In my testing with the N56VJ (same as the N56VZ: same mobo), it's a direct SATA drive, and has no spin up when you need to access it. At least in my testing, it's never fallen asleep and had any lag when I try to access it.

    ****Update****
Turns out that using an Intel Centrino n-6200 card didn't pan out like I had hoped. The Intel N-series cards are very finnicky, and turns out that the one I had was only compatible with certain Intel motherboards (RE: NOT compatible with the N56Vz series mobo). As luck would have it, it did accept a Broadcomm 802.11n series card with dual band. Testing with this card shows great through-put as well, about 25-35Mb/sec on up and downloads at the 5.0Ghz wireless encryption . So if you can get your hands on one, I strongly recommend it!

Hello, I think my HDMI output has burned down, is it possible to fix it without swapping mainboard?

    Hi there,

Thank you for coming back with an update! I just purchased an ASUS VivoBook S400CA-RSI5T18. It is a great laptop, however the stupid AR9485WB-EG is killing me because I don't have 2.4 GHz wifi in my house for years now (30+ APs in my building on the 2.4 wavelength). Can you please share which Broadcom 802.11n card exactly is that you were able to swap with? I will but the same one and try to swap!

    Thanks! :hi2:

So for all that are wondering: you can replace the AR9485WB-EG WAN on the ASUS VivoBook S400CA-RSI5T18 with a Broadcom BCM94322HM8L ( Amazon) and it works fantastically! Note: the contacts are backwards so you have to connect the antenna wires to mirror what ASUS has.

Hi! Can anyone tell me what it is like to use this laptop, I mean using a Windows 8 device with a non-touch display? The thing is that, currently I'm using a Samsung Series 7 Gamer laptop which came with Windows 7 originally. Since it's release I've had a couple of times upgrading it to Windows 8 but that Metro UI drives me mad (in addition to this Samsung really didn't spend enough time to optimize its own software for Windows 8) and everytime I returned to Windows 7. Now I decided to sell it before it gets older and get a similar-spec and smaller laptop. My searches led me to two models; Asus N56VZ and Asus N550JV. As far as I know both models are discontinued so I don't know which model I will be able to buy in the end (budget issues actually). Initially I liked N550JV with the new Haswell CPU and IPS touchscreen. However each day it's getting more expensive and hard-to-find. I saw a couple of dealers which sell brand new N56VZ at reasonable prices. So this is my story guys. If anyone can tell me their experiences about N56VZ and tell me pros and cons of buying N56VZ over N550JV I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this, if not any moderators are welcome to delete this :).

Parting out/selling an N56VJ-DH71. Motherboard is dead and I've confiscated the HDD but if anybody wants to make an offer on any individual parts/the whole thing please PM me.

Full professionally diagnosed hardware report available to anybody wondering about the whole thing.

I`m using Asus Smart Gesture and i like Metro very much and i don`t feel that i necessarily need a touchscreen.Without gestures i`m guessing it would be hard to get used with Metro and like it.

I can't speak for the model specifically but overall the success is pretty high, if you have the spare space take a backup and give it a try.

though the question is in the distant past, FYI - I upgraded to Win 8.1, and then to Win 10 without incident.
Note - sig file is a little misleading. In addition to the Alienware, I have an N56VZ laptop, with 16 gb RAM and 1 TB SSD running WIn 10. J
