    Thank you Liviu,

I' downloaded it and now checking it, hope it'll solve the HDD problem.. The other issue is, 2nd bay doesnt recognize anything at all after the new bios I installed (211), I have seen the new bios came up (215) installed few hours ago. And after that tried installing the bluray drive but nothing (not even on Bios) ! I dont have any idea why my second bay stopped working after the bios update..

My suggestions about the bay not being recognized: Check the security settings and confirm the Optical Drive is not disabled/locked out. Also, be sure that the drive is inserting all the way properly, there is a metal peice that should attach to the end that guides either the ODD or the tray into place, if that is removed it may not be clicking properly.

Hey Peter, thank you for your reply.

The drive is not disabled or locked out, I restored the settings twice but I'll do that again later to be sure. Its on the scan right now.. I tried other HDD's with caddy on the drive and its no use... And as you said, the metal piece is on the drive, so it does attach there. (I am sure it does fit is place). When I turn the pc on, it gets power and it does some sounds like "click clik" (normal stuff...) and then I can eject the tray as well but when it comes to bios or OS, nothing again...

    Hi guys,

I posted this Q in another thread to but since I have the win8 version I thought maybe I aske here too.

So I got my n56vz w windows 8 yday and what concerns me are the idle temps. They are at 48 C and I read in one of the forums here that it should be beolw 35 C. Is that really true?

Could the reason for it be that I didnt clean install windows? I uninstalled some asus bloatware but I feel this laptop needs a clean install but I am worried about formating the recovery partion if I ever want to restore the laptop to factory settings. I used windows 8s own 'create a recovery drive' to backup the recovery drive. Im wondering if this is enough if I ever want to reset the laptop to factory settings?

    Hi All
I just got my N56VJ and I bought a Samsung 256gb SSD that I'm going to replace the 1tb 5400 rpm HDD that came with the notebook with and use the HDD as an external HD for music movies and data. Windows 8 that came preinstalled has already activated and updated it's self on the HD and I' m wondering what is the best and safeist way to copy windows onto the SSD ( Best would be if I could copy the recovery partion onto the SSD also).
THXS in advance for all your help.

    Hi guys,

I've had the N56VZ since this summer, and threw windows 8 on it when it became available here on MSDNAA.
Now, I'm just wondering something aboot the booting process:

Is it UEFI booting by default?
My assumption being yes because I couldn't install the bootloader and getting it to work the regular
way when installing linux (when dual booting windows 7 and linux, before i had windows 8).

I noticed that it takes quite some time to boot into windows 8. While I dont expect speeds like SSD's,
I do expect faster booting than windows 7. I just timed it and it's about 1 minute 15 seconds. A friend of
mine has a new dell that is not extremely much better than my N56VZ and just a 5400 RPM disk and it boots
up in less than half the time. So should I update drivers, flash bios or change bios settings, because I'm confused

As far as I know you will have to do a complete fresh install. You can't just copy an installation onto an SSD

Can I have a screen of physx and surround configuration in the nvidia panel driver in order that I can check if hdmi or DP is directly connected on dedicated cpu thanks for this review

Does anyone know the type of USB 3.0 ports we have on the N56VZ? I would like to install the latest USB 3.0 drivers but cannot seem to find any.

Hey everyone, just finished reading through this whole thread but I didn't see the answer i needed.

    I bought the DS71, win7, 750 x5400 drive, 3610qm, gt350m, etc etc.

I just used the windows 8 upgrade assistant and performed the upgrade keeping windows settings, since I plan on putting in a m4 or vertex 4 soon. My questions are as follows.

    1. Should I go with a 256gb ssd? that seems to be the threshold of ideal size. 128 too small, the rest are too expensive.
    2. Updating the drivers for windows 8 without the asus cd was a pain in the butt. seriously. Is there a way to keep all the drivers when I reinstall to the SSD?

    3. I've read about this UEFI and what not, but i'm not 100% sure I have all the info i need before doing all that. I've bought the 14.99 win 8 pro upgrade and I got them to ship me the dvds. But apparently I can use a 16gb stick and go from there? How do i ensure I get the ~6s boot up? What settings do I enable in the bios?

    Thanks guys!

p.s. when i did the upgrade assistant, my backlight worked right away, I haven't heard any popping, but my touchpad gestures weren't right, so i uninstalled the atk and did the new .022 atk and it worked. Now i'm going through the process of upgrading all the other drivers but man this blows. should i just ask asus for the win 8 driver dvd ? I fully intend to do a clean install when I get my ssd, but I kinda like some of the asus utilities, i don't really want to lose them all, just media espresso hahaha

I can help you answer question 1, SSD like all things will always get cheaper per GB as manufacturing processes advance. Unfortunately its a trade off between cost vs your needs. Personally, 256GB isn't enough for me so I'll probably wait for an affordable 512GB. But yeh, it seems like 256GB is where most people are at.

Good luck with the rest of your questions.

    Hi
I got my N56VJ-DH71 with 1tb 5400 HDD which I replaced with 250gb Samsung SSD and I used Acronis til mirror my HD to the SSD .. Worked 100%.. 250gb is the the smallest SSD for me and I split it up in 2 partions ... 1 for my programs and 1 for data.
Hope you have a good 1.

    Hello Everyone!
I'm pondering buying this laptop. My last decisive factor remained this: I'm quite short sighted, so I can see less than average people. Could you please test for me what the screened images, texts look like setting a 1366*768 or 1600*900 resolution. Does the OS interface and MS Word look blurry or not?
And do you have any experience using the laptop outside? Can the screen be seen well under sunlight? Your answer is appreciated!

Hey, so I have the N56VZ-RH71 and have spent the last few days tearing my hair out about why my USB 3.0 stick wasn't being recognised by Windows 8/Pro. I eventually came across this guide from Plugable about replacing Microsoft's USB host controller stacks (whatever they are) with the Intel ones that officially should only work with Windows 7.

I followed these very clear instructions just about to the word and finally heard the satisfying sound of Windows relenting and accepting it. I just came here to post it for others because I was at the end of my tether and it may save you guys some extremely frustrating hours.

Windows 8 and Intel USB 3.0 Host Controllers|Plugable

    Cheers

Hey, guys (and gals too :) )!

Does anyone know how hard it would be to upgrade the wireless network card (I mean the hardware, not the drivers) on the N56VZ? I have the Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter. I'd like to install, if possible, a dual band card (maybe something from the Bigfoot Networks Killer Wireless-N series).

    Thanks!

Well I finally had the time to make some tests. The text and OS UI does not get blurry but they are not as crisp as 1920x1080 either.
On 1600x900 the text looks a bit off but with the help of ClearType Text Tuner it can be restored to look good again.
I don't know why would you like to keep this amazing screen on such low resolution. At first I was upset too because everything look so small and the websites were worst.
After some searching I set the Display to "Medium - 125%" and I use NoSquint add-on on Firefox with 130% setting and I'm very happy.
Using it outside is not a problem. The only problem I had is when the sun was reflected directly on the screen.
I just test it against Acer V5 with a glossy display and that one is a pain using it outside.

I was wondering, what is the performance of N56vz with modern games if you swap the HDD for a good SDD? Has anyone tried already? Thanks :)

Yes I did and the performances varies. Some games does not get any boost. Most of the games get a good boost on loading time.
From the games I tested on an SSD compared to HDD are Tera, Lineage 2, Minecraft, Metin 2, Need for Speed old and new releases, LFS and others.
All of them have more average frames on SSD and the low fps are higher. The online games Lineage 2 and Tera have the most to gain, when I enter in the city with lots of people the characters around me are loaded immediately without freezes or frame drops, where on HDD is a pain on those places.

Do any of you own this notebook with silver lid? My local seller told me that they can't bring me a black one. Do you think if this would collect more fingerprints than that?

    Hi!
    Continuing the gaming question :)
How well do modern games run at N56 with an SSD installed (e.g. Battlefield 3, Black Ops 2, Dishonored, Skyrim, etc.)? I am choosing between this and Asus ux51vz - and with an SSD installed they should theoretically have equal performance, tipping the scales in favour of N56 due to lower temperatures and fan noise, so I'm checking if my theory is correct.

An SSD will not affect your gaming performance, that is primarily GPU dependent.

You definitely don't own an SSD. :)
While the max FPS does not get any higher, because that is indeed GPU dependent, the game actually progresses faster on the SSD!
It takes less time to reach certain points, as there is zero hanging and fast level loading.
It is the fluidity of game play that is way better.

I bought Samsung (Series 7 Chronos - NP700Z7C-S03CA) laptop and returned it yesterday for a few reasons. The laptop was not so fast, all the credit goes to the 5200RPM 1TB HDD and the 16GB Express Cache did not do much, the camera took some really dark images (had to set the contrast and brightness every time) and was having issues with the touchpad not being so responsive.

    Samsung:
    Samsung Series 7 17.3" Laptop - Grey (Intel Core i7-3635QM/16GB SSD 1TB HDD/8GB RAM)-English : 17" Laptops - Best Buy Canada

    Asus:
    ASUS N76VZ 17.3" Laptop - Black/Silver (Intel Core i7-3630QM / 1TB HDD / 12GB RAM/Windows 8)-English : 17" Laptops - Best Buy Canada

I am confused which one to buy, should I again go with the Samsung or should I choose Asus?
Both are almost similar (Blu ray/DVD drive does not matter to me) and 8GB of RAM would work for me. I cannot upgrade HDD and RAM in Samsung without voiding the warranty. Also Asus is $200 cheaper than Samsung.

    Questions:
    1. Can anyone please confirm does Asus (N76VZ-DH71) laptop has Intel WiFi + Bluetooth adapter, does it support WiDi?

    2. Asus (N76VZ-DH71) laptop comes with two HDD, can I remove the one with OS installed on it and replace it with a SSD. How to figure out which one has the OS?

    3. Does Asus feel like plastic? How is the keyboard and the sound. Samsung had great sound though and it's thinner and lighter than Asus.

    4. Does Asus also have any issue with the Trackpad, Camera, Noise or any other thing? I believe there is no laptop in the market without any flaws.

    Thanks!

    Hi IceJoki,

Would you be so kind as to outline the entire process you used to mirror your HDD to the SSD! :D

Things like any BIOS settings, do you connect the SSD via an external USB enclosure or with a cable of some sort to migrate the data from the HDD to the SSD, Acronis usage tips, SSD drive partioning insights, and anything else you can think of... etc?

Would be greatly appreciated as I also will be going from HDD to a Samsung SSD with my N56VZ-RH71.... Hopefully!

    Thanks!

    Hi Glenn

I´m sorry I´m an old fart so things get forgotten quickly but if memory serves me right this is how I did it. I install and updated all my basic must have programs and updated them. I bought (A bit expensive but seemed to be the easiest and best buy) and installed it. I then connected the new SSD drive to a SATA USB enclosure that I had. I can´t remember exactly what I did with Acronis but if I remember right it was easy to use (used the when all else fails read the instuctions method) the only real thinking I had to do was resizing the partions (working from my 1tb dual partion HD down to the 250gb SSD) to my liking, auto resizing gave me a little smaller partion for the system partion than I wanted so I resized them myself. That´s all I did .... I didn´t do any changes to the BIOS and I don´t think you have to worry about that as that is part of the computer which just configures Basic Input Output System. I just connected the new drive and BINGO everything worked only faster. Take care when opening the back to exchange drives ... some of the screws are under rubber tabs.... I found a video on You Tube which helped me.
Good luck and have a good one.

I can at least compare N56VZ vs samsung 700z7c, since I've had both.

1: I've had two asus models last year, N56VZ and N56VJ - both had atheros wifi and mediocre wifi range/performance. WiDi not tested/not cared about for my part.

2: Sure should be possible, not sure which HDD is which though, remove one and see if it boots? Then you removed the wrong one! ;)

3: More plastic than samsung for sure, still not bad. Sound is good, but slightly behind the JBL system in the samsung. Keyboard is ok, but not as good as samsung 700z7c.

4: Asus trackpads are HORRIBLE, same issue for both N56VZ and N56VJ, trackpad is loosely mounted and not flush with the base, buttons can't be pressed near the edges and precision is mediocre. Honestly worst trackpads I've used. Other issues: popping sounds in speakers when sound card enter/leaves power saving mode, some CPU throttling during heavy use.

The reason I returned my samsung 700Z7C was due to poor wifi (poor antenna placement) which made it unusable for me, beside this it was great.

Hi everyone, had an interesting read on this thread and i'm leaning towards the asus n56VZ as it come into my $1200CAD (inc tax) budget has 2 year warranty and has pretty good reviews. It also seems to balance weight and power so carrying it to university every day won't break my back.

My question is could someone run this benchmark for me and let me know what kind of results you get.

At maximum quality and 1680 x 1050 resolution (1920 x 1080 not selectable in the benchmark) i got a score of 2208 "standard". By observing the benchmark I can say that maximum is slightly too laggy. I guess a mix of medium/high settings would be perfectly playable at 1920 x 1080 resolution.

This is with my Dell inspiron 17R SE (GT650M and i7 3610QM CPU) which should be quite comparable to N56VZ in performance.

edit: "high" setting gave a score of 2913 "fairly high", still it didn't feel smooth enough to my taste, but surely playable.

how did you manage to install ubuntu alongside win8?? when i run the ubuntu installer.. it doesnot detect the win8 partition... only shows unallocated disk... and gparted also gives me this:
/dev/sda contains GPT signatures, indicating that it has a GPT table. However, it does not have a valid fake msdos partition table, as it should. Perhaps it was corrupted -- possibly by a program that doesn't understand GPT partition tables. Or perhaps you deleted the GPT table, and are now using an msdos partition table. Is this a GPT partition table?

i have secureboot disabled ,fastboot disabled. and installing 12.10 .

can you detail out the process please?

It would be of great help.
    Thanks a bunch.

    Hi all,

Can someone please help me on what I should do?
I recently bought my N56VZ, Specs are

    i7-3630QD
    16gb ram, 2 x 8gb DDR3
    Nvidia GeForce GT360M
    DVD combo drive

When I on my laptop there is a bright dot issue, so I called the reseller and they refused to give me a one to one exchange and asked me to bring it to Asus service centre instead. When I call Asus, they said that they wouldn't be able to a one to one. I'm kinda lost on what to do now. Please help! :(

Also, currently while I use it for normal usage, the notebook just seems to lose power. Like just off. Which is another issue I have encountered. Please help someone? Thank you

Just purchased the Asus N56VZ-DH71-CA off of Amazon. Ordered on the 17, received on the 19th!

The amount of bloatware that's pre-installed is massive and I'm trying to do a clean install of Windows 8 Pro.

What's the easiest way to use my own serial key? When I boot from the CD, it seems to be automatically grabbing the serial key that's in the BIOS, and the key is only for Windows 8.

There should be a ZBD Zero Bright Dot policy, I wonder why they can't do a swap. You should ask them why, and if they can't, you should be able to exchange for a new unit. You had me confused for a minute, my old G51JX had a GTS360M, I see you meant GT630M though :).

You can install Windows 8 and then click to Add Features and enter in your Windows 8 Pro key and you'll have it :).

Yeah I am not so keen on the integrated key myself, it just adds an extra level of things to go wrong. I never got media center added as the key system did not work for upgrades :S

Thanks! Unfortunately I don't own a copy of the Windows 8 Disc so closest thing to a clean installation was to install Windows 7 Home Premium and upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. I have another question. Is it possible to redefine the Instant Key that's on the top left side? I'd like to bind that to Windows Key + Space to quickly change languages.

    Hello guys
Does anyone use a Caddy Bay with this laptop?
The thing is that I want to put a Caddy Bay and use the optical drive with a USB enclosure but I don't have that much time to research because of my new job.
What I'm looking for is a 2TB 5400 RPM HDD to put in the Caddy as my second HDD.

What I find myself is that I need a 12.7 mm SATA Caddy that works with a 9.5 mm HDD/SSD.
Is there a Caddy that supports 12.5 mm HDDs that is compatible with N56?
What is the biggest 9.5 mm HDD on the market right now?
Is it true that N56 use a USB controller for the SATA drive and the drive goes off when it's not in use?

    Thank you in advance
    Liviu

Can someone quote me the difference between N56VZ RH71 and DH71.

I am getting a great deal on ASUS N56VZ RH71 around $600, is it a better one to go with? 90 days warranty!

Hey guys, I recently exchanged my HDD with a 7200 RPM one, and gave away my OEM one to my brother before he formatted it and used it for himself. My problem is that I have no access to the recovery drive.

I have been trying to install a fresh copy of windows 8 while activating it using the key I got from the BIOS, but so far there is no luck. I even tried to install Windows 8 core using a generic key that I found online, then unlock it using the OEM key but it also rejected it when it authenticated online. Anyone here have this problem? What should I do to resolve this problem? I don't want to resort to buying a new copy of Windows 8 or piracy

If the drive with the win-boot is active in a computer, you can disable the key there - and then use it on your new install (on any install). If you don't have access to it, or your friend has overwritten the install, etc., you have to call up MS and have them undo the activation of the key for you on their end, so you can use it again.

    Hi
Have you tried to ghost the old HD. I replaced my HD with a SSD and ghosted the HD over and that worked fine.

    Hi
I can highly recommend Start8. I think WIn8 in it´s original form on a computer without a touch screen is a waste time.
