Do you mean SDHC? I remember using SDHC cards on a daily basis with my M50Sv.

Is anyone with the M50Sv-A1 installing the Windows 7 RC that was released on May 5th? Are you going 32 or 64-bit?

The only issue I've had are the realtek HD audio drivers.

I still have 3 GB of RAM, just felt like trying a 64 Bit system

I'm thinking about trying it, since I have more space for dual boot now :).
Just finished replacing my harddrive to WD 500GB..

I actually just installed Windows 7 RC, and I've added more RAM (to 4 gigs), and everything went smoothly except it didn't automatically find one driver, I think for the infared receiver. Also the fingerprint reader keeps crashing when I try to set it up via the control panel.

I had the same problem after upgrading to Windows 7 64-bit. Here is what to do:

Uninstall the driver that Windows installed from the control panel. Reboot. Then download the latest version from AuthenTec:

    http://www.authentec.com/win7beta64.cfm

Install that one and it should work perfectly. In fact, it is much more forgiving than the software that came with the laptop from Asus.

I'm still at 3 gigs but plan to upgrade to 4-gigs (the limit for this laptop). But my laptop is so much faster with less lag than before. So far, I love Windows 7 and finally feel like I'm getting all of the true power of this laptop. Very happy.

Hi, I Have an Asus m50sv with 2Gb ram and im considering updating to 4Gb. Now my question is: does the motherboard support any ram higher than the Pc5300 (667mhz)? like.. the pc6400 (800mhz)?

    thanks in advance.

    Hello
you can put 800MHz ram in the laptop. it will of course run at the 667Mhz speed since that's the limit.

Are you sure M50SV use SATA DVD-ROM?
Just take out mine and for sure its IDE
    Also on lspci -nn:

Yes, a 800MHz ram will work on the M50.

I was pretty sure the optical drive is a SATA interface. However, check with the pictures below.

If it's SATA, it will look like this:

If it's IDE, it will look like this:

I've been using my M50Sv for a year now and recently i found some odd in my unit...my screen flickers with red lines, distorted image and colors most of the time.Even in boot mode, i experienced this kind of problem. Anyone knows how to deal with this? Is it my LCD screen or my graphics card/VGA driver?

    Please help... :(

I would guess the LCD screen or connections to it (see below). Do the artifacts appear "digital" (squarish-blockish), or "analog" (continuous bands of color, for instance). The former would indicate GPU, the latter LCD.

It can also be in the connection of the LVDS (coax) cable, which passes the video signal from the motherboard/GPU to the screen. Do the patterns of the artifacts change when you rotate the screen towards/away from you?

You could try to remove and reseat the LVDS cable, using this disassembly guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=260993

Thanks E.B.E for the fast response.

Yes indeed. and sometimes i had to close and open the lid to get rid those red line artifacts but that's only temporarily and it will show again whenever i move/rotate my screen away or towards me.

Recently,I tried to open the LCD to find some hints why my screen keeps on flickering but all are ok. OR maybe the inverter is the culprit? But i think you are right, perhaps i have to investigate or look closer those connections.

I would suggest try reseating all connections (which should include LVDS/coax cable, and inverter cable) on both sides, but especially on the motherboard side.
If that doesn't solve the problem, you should order new cables (and possibly also a new inverter, since it's not expensive).

I am not sure where you could get the components at your location, however... see theFAQ in the info booth for some options.

Quick question for everyone. I pulled the factory 250gb drive and replaced with a Seagate ST9500420AS drive. I noticed that the 250gb drive had the jumper installed to limit the I/O on the SATA channel to 1.5gb/sec. I didnt install it on the new drive, and everything seems to be working fine. Does the ICH8M support the full SATA II 3.0gb/sec spec and NCQ?

Windows 7 found and installed my IR driver, and my camera driver (and my fingerprint, external mouse, keyboard, everything!) by itself with no interaction from me.

Does anyone know how to get the touchpad to work with the mode buttons? when I tap the top right of the pad, nothing happens (in Win 7). edit: I installed the correct driver, but "Duel Mode" is disabled in the settings

Has anyone else had problems with their GPU? I'm currently sending my notebook back for the 3rd time due to the GPU packing it in. When I'm running 3d, it's up around 83 degrees Celsius, and yes I use a Antec lapcool, never used it on a soft surface, and keep the fan nice and clean..

The last time it would simply hard-lock the notebook when running 3d but this time, getting visual artifacts and it wont enter 3d mode. Lemon?

Hmm it has the GeForce 9500M GS, which is not typically on the list of GPUs affected by the nVidia bad bumps problems... but things are pretty uncertain since nVidia never came clean with respect to these problems.

83 degrees under load is perfectly fine for a mobile GPU.

Hey guys, I was just wondering since we all have this laptop for awhile now, I want to know which video card driver you guys are using and which one you find best in terms of gaming or video performance.

As for myself, I am using 179.48 driver from laptopvideo2go.com and it seems to be pretty good for me in games such as Left 4 Dead, CS, or TF:2. I haven't been actively looking for new drivers, but this one seems to be offering the best results from the previous ones I've used. I am not a person who is too concerned about temperature and such, since I have not really experienced any BSOD or problems from overheating.

Let me know what you guys are using!

hmmm..that's interesting because I've been using the stock driver, basically I never update. I just use what came with it.
Never had any problems with any games, most of them are playable around med to high settings. I never have to decrease it to lower setting.
But I do have some problems with the new Resident Evil 5 benchmark. I always get very low score. Maybe I should download and try one of those drivers from laptopvideo2go or change laptop LOL..

Hey guys, I have two questions:
    1) Whats the procedure for putting Win 7 on the m50? I had XP on it until recently and had to download all different drivers for XP because the vista drivers included only work with vista. If I install 7, does it just recognize everything? (dual-mode touch pad, wifi, ethernet, camera, video etc)
    2) Number 2, is that my DVD drive has been acting up recently. When I had XP, it wouldn't burn any discs and started not being able to read them. I put vista back on about 2 weeks ago and have the same problem, so I know its not an OS problem. I called asus to see if they could just ship me a replacement drive, but they said I'd have to send the whole comp, which I'd rather not do. Do you guys know the procedure for taking the drive out? And could you give me a good drive to put in it? (can this laptop take a blu-ray drive for example?)
    Thanks

Where can I find drivers for Windows 7 64bits?

Drivers I'm currently looking for are:
    - Trackpad
    - Camera
    - Function key capabilities

Should I install the Vista version of the software from the Asus website?

EDIT: I can't find the driver for the Fn key that controls the volume, brightness, etc... What is it called? There used to be a splash screen like thing when you control the volume and brightness via Fn key

I just did a clean install of the Home Premium version of Windows 7. Everything is great except that Windows has failed to recognize my fingerprint reader. The odd thing is that the Win 7 Beta did recognize the fingerprint reader and installed the drivers for it after running Windows Update.

Any ideas why Windows 7 is not finding the drivers?

I upgraded my m50sv from Vista Home Premium to 7 Pro and my CD drive is being wacky...will initially read a disk and then just spin, stop, spin, stop, you get the point. I am amazed I was actually able to get through the install since it started doing that at the end...Anyone have ideas?

My CD drive started giving me problems within the first year (sometimes would read somtimes wouldn't, after about a year, it would never finish burning a disc no matter what I tried...), but thanks to ASUS's great warranty service where I live I got it switched on the spot (they wanted to take it for a week to make sure that the drive was the problem but I convinced them to do it the same day, I have to say, I'm very happy with the international warranty service here...)

Don't try it!! I just flashed to that BIOS a few minutes ago. My fingerprint reader stopped working. It is recognized by the system but it is not reading fingerprints. The device is initialized but the TrueSuite starter for Windows 7 (which was updated from Windows Update) won't recognize when I swipe my finger. I'm gonna have to call ASUS tomorrow :(

I have 207, since I can download that one from the ASUS site. How can I downgrade the BIOS? I tried to use EZ Flasher but it didn't allow me to...

Edit: I made a bootable USB DOS drive and was able to downgrade back to 207 successfully. I'm all good now and everything is back to normal :).

Separate question now... What are the CPUs supported by this model? I'm wondering if I can upgrade the CPU to something beefier. Also, I noticed that I can't dim my display anymore >_<

Could somebody give me some advice? I'm trying to get the spdif optical output to work on my laptop in win7 but can't seem to get the jack working properly. I reinstalled new realtek drivers (the win7 ones from the m50vn page asus has) and I can't even get the speakers to work when nothing' plugged in anymore.
In the realtek manager it has the middle black jack under analog bolded as if something is always plugged in (even when empty!). The other jacks are dimmed. I set the default device as the digital output (not hdmi) and still, nothing happens :(
So if anybody knows a fix or a workaround to get my optical jack working and my speakers working again, I would be very grateful. Thank you in advance!!

p.s. I am pretty sure i'm using the right cable.... it's a minitoslink to toslink connecting to my logitech z5500's. The receiver says there's no optical data.
