    cpu 1 & 2 = 52 c
THRM (whatever that is) 47 c
    GPU = 66 c (before it was 59 to 60)
    HDD= 48

    Is it normal?

THis temps are when i'm in idle
when i firs got this i haven't noticed the palmrest heating up. now its hard to type for long because it is really hot =( help guys..

In GenTechPC's 3Dmark06 XP benchmarks for the M50Sv a score of 3740(1440x900) and for the M50Vm a score of 3983(1440x900). Does that mean the 9500m GS and 9600m GS aren't different in performance in XP?

Usually the WiFi module is user replaceable, it's in a miniPCI port somewhere in the notebook. There is a disassembly guide for the M50: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=260993. Looking at the picture might tell you where it is.

They can change the screen. But if they replace it with the same model, it'll probably look just the same...

Those temps are a bit high. Besides making sure that the GPU clocks down, also make sure that the CPU is clocking down as well, and isn't locked at its maximum frequency. That has the potential to heat up the computer with up to 10 degrees maybe, on idle. The heat will also propagate to the GPU.

Besides that, I can't think of another explanation because the notebook is new and can't be dusty inside. You could push the notebook a bit with Orthos Prime for instance, and see if the fan speed ramps up. If it doesn't then maybe something is wrong with the ACPI drivers (ATK) or the BIOS.

Does anyone know if Hitachi 5K500 series hard drives will fit in the M50Sv HD slot? I heard it is thicker than an average hard drive.

It's a 12.5 mm drive, so get out a measuring tape and see if it fits.

Then my intuition was correct and that's the cause of the increase in temps. You should reinstall the ATK drivers and also Power4Gear. If that doesn't work, you can use a different Power4Gear profile (e.g., Battery Saving) that you configure so that the CPU can go up to full speed.

If that doesn't work either, use RMClock. I am recommending it last because it has problems with Santa Rosa and I believe therefore that it doesn't support Montevina fully, either.

It's safe to assume it won't fit. So, either buy another HDD or wait until you get the notebook and you know for sure. I believe 2-platter (9.5mm) 500GB designs aren't far away, though. :)

You downloaded off laptopvideo2go, right? If so, the modified INF needs to be downloaded separately. Usually every driver link has the INF link near it.

I find statements like this to be such BS, there may be higher fail rates by some companies (and I'm not saying that samsung is one of them) but it's in the order of less than a 2% difference, the fact is that all companies have a certain amount of drives that fail, but it's not like one company has 10% failure rate and another has 0.5% failure rate...
Now if you know of a specific product line with a defect then by all means avoid it, but over time all companies have had such products...

I agree that we should compare on a model-by-model basis. As with any brand, some people will like brand X and hate brand Y, and with other people it will be the other way around. Although I wouldn't put it quite as forcefully as you did. :)

That's weird, usually ASUS use the same chassis for a model line so I would expect all M50's to have the same depth of the HDD bay. Maybe it's in the connector layouts, though, who knows.

If I were you I'd make frequent backups of those HDDs. :) Not because they're Samsung but because HDDs that old have rather high probabilities of failure (unless they are enterprise drives and even so).

So, has anyone had any problems using the vga port on the side to display to an external monitor/tv/projector? I have tried this many times, and every time I play videos with action sequences, or any time where there is fast vertical movement/changes on the screen, it looks like it isn't synced properly and what seems to be a tear form around the middle of the video.

I've tried updating the drivers, and enabled the Vsync option in the nvidia control panel, but it seems to still do it as much as it did before.

I've also tried changing the refresh rates around from 60-80, but again, this does not help.

Any suggestions as to what the problem could be, and if it's fixable?

I don't recall ever having this problem on my desktop computer whenever I wanted to watch movies on a secondary display.

killermojo, thanks for the link to that thread. Although I don't know if it directly helped me, it did give me the idea to change the video render in media player classic to VMR9 (Renderless).

This change seems to help get rid of these tears/flickers on my secondary monitor, but it only works in media player classic. Does anyone know if such changes can be made in other video players? I looked in windows media plaer, and nothing comes up under 'renderer' for options (just a blank list).

It's quite possible it doesn't work properly, a lot of power management software does not support the newer mobile chipsets (Santa Rosa, Montevina).

The golden rule is: If in doubt whether the power management software works well or not, assume it doesn't and don't use it.

    Hi all!

Im new to the forum and have found it great for some drivers! much appreciated. :)

I just formatted my M50SV and installed XP Pro. Im missing a few drivers tho so if anybody could help me that would be fantastic.

    I'm missing:
the Fn drivers so the F keys will change sound and whatnot.
    the Power Gear 4 driver
    and the camera/mic driver.

Sorry if im being a pest and they have already been posted.

    Thanks,
    maRGas

Thanks for that site, but they dont seem to work

both camera drivers dont work. the setup wont even run.

and the power gear setup works, then when it tries to run it is says
"Current system do not support this utility.
    Porgram Stop !"

I get the feeling the author isnt english.

    anybody got any other ideas?

The camera should run even without you installing any driver. Try it out with yahoo messenger.. Try to look for power for gear in asus' site. the p4g in my earlier post installed fine on mine.

it had a list of about 15 (maybe more) drivers for the asus m50sv which had the power 4 gear drivers aswell

ive installed the drivers from the vista cd (a few has worked) but the others just dont like it :(

I just want to ask you guys what is the average transfer rate between to partiotions? i transferred 22 gigs of data this morning from partition f to d and the avg rate is 16MBps. I copied 50 gigs of data from my external HD and the rate is about 12 MBps. I think the transfer rate between hard drives should be alot faster right?

The external transfer rate is a bit slow, indeed, but it strongly depends on the type of files copied. If they are small files, then the transfer will be slower, and if big, the transfer will be faster.

The internal transfer rate, it will usually be rather slow because the HDD RW head needs to move a lot from one partition to the other. It's important to use a program that uses efficient buffering techniques (not sure if Windows Explorer does it). Total Commander does it quite well, if properly configured.

guys i need your help again... I have two OS' set up(vista and xp) and i installed gears of war on both systems so that i could compare the performance of the game on different os. But after sometime or so the laptop would crash (it just turns off) and then when i turn it on it would give you two choice (f1 to continue and f2 to enter bios as far as i can remember) the cause of this is because the date is reset (i don't know if the whole bios). I've overclocked the gpu (520/1200/450) AND HAVE FINISHED cod4 without a hitch. i have 174.74 on vista and 177.70 on xp.Anyone knows what is causing this?

I don't know the cause, but I would suggest that you stop overclocking and test again, as a first step.

You should also monitor your temps during gaming, see if the GPU (or CPU, for that matter) are not overheating.

I don't know, but there is a certain threshold at which the computer does an emergency shut down (simply by cutting the power). Usually this threshold is past 100 degrees Celsius.

Maximum is a little over 100 degrees I think. With the m50sv it's best to keep the gpu under 85 because in my expirience, it automatically downclocks after 25 mins or so at 85.

I played gears of war last night and left HW monitor on and rivatuner.. may max cpu tem is between 60 and 70 c and my gpu maxxed out at 83 c. so i am within the treshold. i upgraded my driver to 177.92 (which runs great by the way) with powermizeon (i haven't encountered any downclocking) so at my first go , about 30 mins of gameplay and poof there it goes again, but after i restarted, i played gow until i pass i out and it never shutdown.. hmm. would the bios upgrade address this?

another thing is i would like to ask(again) if the excessive lightbleed would be considered in my warranty. it's is too much (even if this is my first laptop, i know that it is too much). even at the top, there is some wavy thingy that is caused by the light if i am watching a movie ( i usually watch a movie so it is really an issu for me

last thing is i like to ask about what laptop cooler should i buy.. the zalman nc1000/2000 or the gigabyte g-pad pro?

thanks guys for helping out and keeping this thread about a wonderful product alive =)

If I remember correctly, some people have replaced screens in the past for lightbleed, from warranty.

But if they put back the same type of screen, you may not see any difference.
