Give me a min to download and install it ;)

EDIT: After playing around with the hotkey settings in VLC media player, the MM touchpad doesn't seem to work for both audio and video. As a matte of fact, even if I set certain hotkeys such as "pause/play" as space, it doesn't work either. There's the option of selecting the media hotkeys on the MM touchpad, but just like setting the hotkeys on the keyboard, they didn't work for me. Does this happen to you too, chipmoney?

Keyboard hotkeys work fine for me, space works as pause and cntrl Right arrow fast forwards as the default function for me.

Thanks for checking David, I was sure that Winamp worked with the touch pad. I use Winamp alot, so having it not work with the MM touchpad would suckk.

Another question, can you make the volume control on the touch pad global for the laptop?

Hmm.. that's weird. I'll play with it more tomorrow... getting kinda late here in Boston and I need my beauty sleep :p

    No problem :)
And yes, the volume control on the touchpad works despite opening any media players. It's basically a hotkey for the master volume in your volume control located on the bottom right of your screen.

    What does WLED stand for?

As to the 64 bit system....the only thing I've run into so far that causes problems is if I open Internet Explorer in 64 bit, some websites won't load. Also, I may have had problems with Java and Adobe Acrobat when running 64bit. I really don't use it much, but I have it to future proof this laptop. Sorry I'm not much help with this answer.

WLED stands for White LED. It's essentially an LCD with LED backlighting instead of the standard backlighting using thin white tubes. Since it's LED, the M50 get a brighter display while using less energy.

Ordered mine (A1) earlier this week from BTOtech. Great service. Ironic that it takes more for the package to get through customs than to cross the Atlantic (since they don't work on weekends). I'll let you know later on about it, though I have exams for a few weeks now so no review yet. Awesome thread btw, kudos GenTech PC.

Hey, thanks. That's really going the extra mile to answer a question. :)

I really like GOM Player. I tried it after Paul Thurott raved about it on his (and Leo Laporte's) "Windows Weekly" podcast. It's light and simple and perfect for watching my ripped movies and TV shows.

The high pitched noise that emits from the heat exhaust, which some people(me included) can hear, which seems to be impossible to get rid of.(Tried all the possible fixes and none worked)

I would send your notebook in for repair. Most likely, Asus will give you a new laptop or replace your mobo or cpu. Either way if you're located in the US, you should have your notebook back in less than a week.

@ Doop: Did you check out this website?

The only thing I don't like about this laptop is that there's a slight "squeaking" noise generated by one of the hinges. I think it's got something to do with the plastics rubbing against each other. It's annoying at most.

Is this a common issue? My ears are terrible, so there's no way it'd bother me. But my wife has hearing like...uh, like...uh, whatever animal has really good ears...and she'd revolt if I sat in bed next to her with a squealing notebook.

    Bats?
As for the CPU whine coming from the exhaust, I don't have that issue as well as the hinges squeaking. My M50Sv is pretty darn silent.

For the simplification purposes, here's a list of XP drivers for the M50Sv-A1.
I compressed most of them in .rar format, so you'll need winzip or winrar to extract them. Audio driver link was just copied from Realtek's website.
All files can be downloaded either from rapidshare, megaupload or mediafire (thanks to bored4)

As always, please back-up all data before making any changes to your notebook AND ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE just in case!!!.

    XP Drivers for M50Sv-A1

    ATK0100 Rapidshare Megaupload Mediafire
    ATKHOTKEY rapidshare Megaupload Mediafire

    Hi, and welcome to Notebookreview.com!
Like 99% of all 15" notebooks, they are actually 15.4", including the M50Sv. There's probably only one or two true 15.0" notebooks in the entire notebook industry. :)

If you recently installed SP3 you'll need the kb835221 fix.
Also, remember you have to uninstall your previous driver before installing the new driver.

Firstly, delete your IP address from your previous post (for security reason :) )
Since you don't have an account with rapid share, you can only download one file at a time.

That would be the scenario if you were already downloading a file from rapidshare, and if you weren't.. Are you using a proxy or something? This happens when you do, usually.

Maybe it's just me but it seemed rather sluggish to me and having used XP for so long already, changing to Vista seemed to change my whole pc experience :p that mind sound slightly retarded but basically i don't like the way vista works. Besides... games seem to run more smoothly with XP.

Emporium, did you get the majority of those drivers from Asus's site? Just curious of the source is all. (Mostly if they are the latest available)

Also, is there any chance you could zip all of them up and stick them on a site such as Megaupload.com? I'd definitely appreciate it since I don't have access to a premium rapidshare account so it would take me propably 12 hours of downloading between timers to get them all.

If I can get a base pack of drivers going that work good for me perhaps I could start a driver pack for M50 NBR members who wish to run Windows XP. I wouldn't mind as I did something similar over in the HP section.

    Thanks!

Edit: Also I believe these right here will solve the Infrared problem under Windows XP but need someone to test them. Its basically a direct link to Acer's website, identical drivers other than they appear to support XP. (Despite the filename just mentioning Vista various sites claim they support XP)

Possibly fill out the FAQ in the What Notebook Should I Buy? forums if your haven't already for a better analysis of you requirements.

And pending the 9500GS vs 8600GT, go to this post and you'll see StormEffect strutting his stuff lol. :D

I got these drivers mainly from the manufacture website and from Ken @ GenTechPC. I tried contacting Asus for XP drivers, but funny enough, they told me to look at notebookreview.com, and specifically this M50Sv owners lounge thread for answers. There's also no plans for them to release XP drivers on the Asus website.

I'll try upload the driver on megaupload.com later today :)

    Don't worry, we're all the same here. DDR 2 ram = 333mhz x 2 = 667mhz clock cycle.

The Acer seems to have the 8600m GT 512 DDR2, which doesn't perform as well as the Asus' 9500m GS 512mb DDR2.
Performance wise, the 8600m GT 256mb GDDR3 is the best, then comes the 9500m GS 512mb DDR2, then the slowest is the 8600m GT 512mb DDR2.

    Difference between 8600m GT 256mb GDDR3 and 9500m GS 512mb DDR2 are nominal. 9500m GS is about 5% slower.

you can put the file on http://www.mediafire.com/ you can upload upto 100mb files, you can only download one at a time but theres no time limit in between files.

as you can see this is my first post and im glad i found this site and this notebook. it's the one im looking at getting. I have one question tho. Does anyone know if they make hdmi to component(blue, green, red rca cables) i would like to be able to hook this up to older tv's that dont have hdmi. and since this doesn't have an s-video out im not sure how i could do that

I've already uploaded everything to rapidshare and I'm in the process of uploading the drivers to megaupload. I don't think I'll upload anymore files in the meantime.

As for HDMI to component, is this what you're looking for? You could just use a VGA to component cable, which is much cheaper. Link here

    Hi guys,

I tried plugging my desktop speakers into my laptop for the first time today, as I wanted some bass for my music. When I did this, however, a noticeable, high-pitched whine began to be emitted from the speakers and continued to do so until I unplugged them from the laptop. This had never previously occurred with these speakers on my desktop computer, so the problem must have originated with the laptop. - Any suggestions as to what it could be or how I can fix it?
I seem to recall some posts early on in this threat that talked about headphones giving off a whine and it having something to do with the hard drive. Is this the same thing?

Er, I dunno what that is - I just plugged it in the speaker hole, but changing it to the headset or microphone holes doesn't make a difference in the whine.

Did you use the 2 ports closest to the USB port? Those are what you should use for your audio outputs.

Asus has a Bios update in beta that addresses this problem, or so they told me when I called and asked about an entirely different problem.
