I used to have a Toshiba X300 with SLi graphics. I can leave it on all night playing Flight Simulator X and it wouldn't overheat. I wonder if this model can take such a workload?

45C under sunlight I wouldn't be sure it can take it.
On room temperature with a good cooling pad I think it can take it 24/7/363/..
My lg r700 with nvidia 8600gt was on for 2 years .. and sold it now and it has life in it.
Got 2 feet lifting notebooks up in a 15% and 12cm fan blowing air under it, was working fine for my lg to keep temps down.
Now my g51j will need some tweaking (too big rubber feets) so will make side air tight and 1 more 12cm fan in the back.
Internal fan doesn't really need to move air after just directs it more. -
kinda bored tonight, so i did 3dmark06 runs on some newer drivers (winXP 32). forgot to write down what the actual point score was, but they were all between the 10,100 to 10,400 range. reference frame in cod4 is on broadcast, overlooking the parking lot towards roof.
195.62 - 52-54fps ref
3969 - SM2
4421 - SM3
3374 - CPU
195.55 - 58-60fps ref
4220
4493
3344
195.39 - 57-59fps ref
4042
4491
3377
186.81 57-59fps ref
4121
4401
3318
no idea why the SM2 score was that low, it certainly didn't feel like it.
-> 195.55 were indeed the smoothest, but had problems drawing shadows in Borderlands and at times became choppy to the point of single digit fps (even on lowest texture settings).
edit: 10,421 on stock clocks and settings (195.55).
edit2: 10,019 on windows 7 (195.55, same as above).Attached Files:

Hi!
What do you guys think about this idea:
Is it possibible to change G51J display to G50V?
Just remove whole G51J display with plastics and camera, buy new G50V 1680x1050 display and change it in local Asus service center?
G51J display is very uncomfortable for eyes.
It is too bright and 15 degree viewing angle is actually 0 degree viewing angle.
If i decrease brightness, for me it is harder to see information.
I checked both displays specifications and G51J viewing angle vertically is 15 degree, but G50V 3 times more. At the same time all parameters are higher than G50V (except viewing angle). -

I wonder if ComputerMD82's comp died and can't reply back to us...
-
Does anyone know how to remove the on-screen caps lock on/off indicator at the bottom-right? It's annoying because if I accidentally press it while playing a game, it causes the game to minimize or go into windowed mode (making the game run slower).
-
I think you are going to get your copper blocks early than me. If I don't get them by this friday, I can't install them until Jan 2010. -
Well chances are I'll get them maybe this week? if not I'm going to HK in 2 weeks and I'll probably pick up some there and post pictures afterwards (so still before you can get them)

Will run another Furmark test on it's own then run the test that Joker asked for. Here's hoping for better temps than last time.... -
Furmark, 93C Peak this time, a little better. Accidentally let it run too much, the first few moments on the left of the chart got cut off, nothing major there though.
-
From 95C without copper to 93C with copper?
2c drop by using copper?
Can you test in game performance, since furmark push gpu; -
Can you run Stability test, custom res 1366x768, Extreme burning, 8xAA. THats what most of the test were run at, since most g51 users have that screen, just trying to see your temps at what most run it.
-
we want to find out the max temperature GPU will get to by running furmark, so 8xAA is useless compare to 0xAA -
Downloading the Crysis demo to test gaming temps. Hoping for no BSOD...
-
My request is more to see if the 1080p his ruining the G51j will change running it at 1366x768, but also to compare to Bestbuy g51 then might aswell run the 8xAA and extreme burning mode. If it goes to high then just abort the test. Just trying to see if the blocks gave similar results under same conditions others have done them. -
-
-
Thanks for the run, thats pretty much even results with me, although some users like Forge do get better temps, they also moded more (fake vent and drilled the backplate), so i would say the blocks are giving you the same benefits as they given me, before i passed to 92C on the same test you ran, not saying its perfect, just same as me.
-
As long as it's helping a little, I feel it's worth it. Plus it looks awesome If I can ever get my hands on a back panel.... I'm going all out on it!

Hey people I'm new here. Thanks for the welcome! ;-)
Got my G51J-A1 a couple of weeks ago. Love the laptop but am wondering if anyone has experienced their system freezing when taking a snapshot using the Fireshot plugin in Firefox3.6b4?
This happened last week, and strangely started happening after installing the Razer Copperhead drivers. No BSOD, just complete non-responsiveness, frozen screen, and the fan starts up. Only way out is a hard reset. Same behaviour also happened when using Trillian Astra, every time one of my contacts came online or offline. Strange I know.
I had to restore the system to as new to stop this behaviour.
Then this morning I reinstalled the Razer Copperhead drivers and wooshka the same behaviour occurs again. Now even after uninstalling the drivers and a system restore it is still occuring.
Any ideas? I'm not sure what diagnostics to run to test this but the behaviour happens every time I take a snapshot. I've tried downgrading to Firefox 3.5 and the same thing happens.
Would love some ideas from you geniuses as I am but a mere mortal ...
Thanks! -
spare yourself a headache, uninstall the coppherhead drivers.
-
I have yet to reinstall the Copperhead drivers to completely rule them out, but the above fix has worked for some others too. -
Don't need the mouse driver as it offer nothing more then the built in one .. games can remap buttons anyway.
No clue what asus was thinking with creative drivers on a realtek chip, should give an email to creative if asus licensed the usage or the sticker or not.
Should just get back the old realtek sound controlls like ac97 had. -
I just uninstalled the Creative drivers as well.
The problem I was having was that unless I rebooted my laptop prior to starting up WoW (IE just using hibernate instead of shutting down completely at the end of the night) it would take a lot longer to display the login screen, take a lot longer to log in, and then when finally getting logged in I would have anywhere between 1-9 fps no matter where I was at. Also, looking at Task Manager it would show WoW as "not responding" every few seconds. I thought for sure it was a problem with going into hibernate....but it turns out it was likely the Creative Soundblaster drivers.
What I did to "test" to see if it worked was I uninstalled all the Creative drivers and then let it reboot. When I got back to my desktop I started WoW and let it run for a lil bit. Then I logged back off and put my laptop into hibernate. Then I woke it up and started up the game and it ran just fine. Then I logged off, hibernated again, woke, and then logged back in....and everything was just fine. -
Those Creative drivers are clearly a cause of multiple issues. I have now reinstalled the Copperhead drivers and am not experiencing any issues.
It is definitely the Creative drivers. -
I plan on using the recovery disc that came with it to do a recovery to factory settings. Will this remove all that crap ware that came with the laptop? This way I can install the needed drivers and loose some dead weight.
Do you guys know if a lot of the crapware is installed in which partition? I want to get rid of all that software crap.
If this laptop takes 120W and airplanes only output 75W, and if I use a power inverter to output continous
150W, will the power inverter fry my laptop? would a 300W power inverter fry my laptop? -
The recovery disc will allow you to do a 'clean' install as long as you don't insert the driver disc when it asks. Instead, reboot your machine. It'll continue with its install procedure but without the asus utilities and drivers. You'll have to install the ATK drivers and utilities as well as a few others to have full functionality back (function shortcuts, etc) but otherwise it won't install the other 'bloatware'.
All utilities are installed on drive c... it just partitions your drives depending on what you choose during install, not put programs or utilities in those other partitions.
It doesn't matter how much wattage is provided to your laptop, as long as you don't exceed that draw and its provided in the right voltage. Running in 'battery mode' will keep your processor in the lower wattage range its capable of for example, from around 15w to 30w. As long as you don't exceed whats provided, you'd be fine. It can be somewhat dificult to figure that threshold out, however, since there's no provided display of total wattage use. A larger inverter shouldn't matter, its the voltage it provides that matters. -
thanks for the answer, I just want clarify a few things, on the drivers dvd, what drivers and utilities do I really need from that dvd? -
-
Just got my laptop. COuldn't explore more, a bit busy since last 2 weeks of semester, grrr bad timing... Anyways, for some reason, whenever I run gtalk and try to sign in, the system hangs completely!!! Same thing with yahoo messenger!! SO far other softwares that I have installed are skype, office, acrobat reader and they have no problems so far..
-
I think I will just upgrade my ram instead of using window recovery.
Can this laptop's ram be upgraded to 6GB or 8GB? I assume yes because I have seen other setups with higher ram.
But, does this mean that all ram companies are compatible with the asus g51j, or do I have to find a specific ram company that is compatible with the asus
G51J?
I know that you should uninstall the creative sound drivers, what other drivers do you need to uninstall? -
CPUID Harware Moniter says that GPU temperature is around 83C when I'm idling or just surfing the net.
Is something wrong or is it supposed to be that high? -
Do you have your laptop sitting on your lap or is it on a table top while getting 83C? Mine can at times get almost that high if I have it sitting right on my lap, but that's because I'm pretty sure I'm partially blocking the air intake. If I put my laptop cooler (just sitting there...not actually running the fans in it) under it while on my lap it lowers down to the mid 60's to lower 70's. If I set it on a table top it stays in the upper 50's to mid 60's. All of this while just surfing the net etc.
-
Is this ram compatible with our asus G51j?
Corsair CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9 4GB 1X4GB DDR3-1333 CL9-9-9-24 204PIN SODIMM Memory
Its a 4GB stick, I wanted to upgrade the ram on my laptop. Do I have to flash bios or do anything special when install this ram stick? -
Mines on a table, just surfing the net. I thought maybe my room was too hot, but it's doing the same thing at other locations too. -
Wow...then yeah I would say it's idling quite warm then. What are you using to monitor your temperatures with?
-
83c idle is a good 20c too high if it's sitting on a table.
i get between 60 and 64c browsing. -
I did just get the computer yesterday and have yet to update windows, could that be part of the problem? -
If you are properly downclocking, and still getting 83C then you should send your machine to Asus as it might have something wrong with the GPU or heatsink. -
-
-
Edit: So I went to Nvidia's site to update my graphics drivers instead of using the ones on Asus's site, I think that fixed it
This is what I'm getting now, as opposed to getting 500 for core clock, 799 for memory and 1250 for shader. Does this appear normal now??
-
yes those are the normal idle clocks
-
72C is still a bit too high on idle
