Hi I just bought a G51VX-RX05 yesterday. I'm really liking it a lot!

I have a 17" laptop bag/case but the G51VX-RX05 is way to tight of a fit. Same with my 17" laptop sleeve. Can anyone recommend a bag/case and sleeve that they know fits the g50 or g51.

    Thanks

Does anyone else have really low sound? I went in the bios and moved it to 10 and it still didnt really boost at all, is there anything else you can do to fix this?

Also, looking for a fix for keyboard lag / 3/2 button nonsense.

Hmm....the sound sounds fine to me and I have it either at 6 or 7 in my BIOS.

You turned the OS side volume control up right?

Hi, I plan on buying the G51VX-X1A from newegg, and I have a couple of questions:

    1. Does it come with the stock overclocking software?

    2. If so, how far can it safely be overclocked? (with the stock 2.53ghz Duo P8700)

    3. I've seen somewhat inconsistent reports on this: can it be upgraded at a later date to a Quad cpu? if so, which ones would fit? (wouldn't be installing myself, my neighbor is a certified repairman who would be doing the installing)

    4. Is the 4GB of DDR2 the max supported ram? and is 1066mhz the fastest supported speed for this model.

(would be getting the G71 from best buy- but its backordered and I'd rather not wait another month)

    Thank you for any help!

    1) Yes but its somewhat restrictive. Better to use SetFSB and nTune
    2) Overclocking will vary between systems
    3) It is not known whether quads are supported. It doesn't look too good atm but we won't truly know until someone tries/
    4) You can probably get more RAM in but you would get minimal gains. Not positive about the RAM clocks though.

thank you very much! :) do you have any idea of a range for the OCing? (I.e I see that people say 2.25Ghz-2.5ghz is about standard for the P7350, I just want to know some sort of viable range, not an exact number as I know that varies from CPU to CPU.

    **edit**

Also, earlier on in this thread (page 14) someone says the A1 (the model I'm purchasing) can handle any socket P quad I can throw at it, I didn't see this post before but it does give me some high hopes :)

    Probably 2.7 Ghz - 2.9 Ghz

That post was probably made before we found that the motherboard revision was different from the quad supported reseller versions. Most of us did expect that the A1 would be able to support quads but now.....we really don't know

    Hello all,

Just got my G51Vx-A1 today after so much waiting and i am very excited about it so far.... one thing boggles me though, I did not have the Win7 free upgrade paper in the box...is that normal? will I still be able to get the free upgrade? sorry if that was answered earlier, if it was, just tell me the approximate page and I will search by myself!

You should have the upgrade, since you have a eligible model.

Register here. If you have trouble getting your serial number verified just do the manual thing. I had the same problem, but after a day I was able to register just fine.

About to grab a XA1 off of newegg in a few days, just a few questions for the proud owners of these machines.

    1) I have good chance of getting a hot machine. I will be doing most everything in the optimizing thread, but also, I am getting a cooling pad as well. Does anyone recommend one (or two) in specific? I know that that huge fan looking thing on the bottom is in fact not a fan, and I am looking for maximum fan alignment.

    2) The quad core issue is a bummer, but I don't plan to upgrade for awhile anyways. Is this problem something that can be solved with a BIOS update by ASUS in the future? I don't know too much about mobos, I thought it was all about socket type and that's it, didn't know that there were other things that could be incompatible.

    are you getting a X1A or X-A1?

I would suggest the NC2000, made by Zalman. People have good results with them. I use a NZXT Cryo S, which seems to get the job done. But I would rather have a NC2000.

I think that a BIOS might solve the quad core issue but i cant be sure. Most likely not.

    The X1A, ya, sorry.

The Zalman's are pretty well recommended, but pricey. I'm going to be using this laptop on my lap most of the time, and the Zalman's take air from the bottom, and I don't want to worry about where my thighs and knees are. The NZXT Cryo S seems like it's really effective, but it also seems noisy and with what people have been saying about the speakers on the G51s, I'm a little hesitant. I was looking at the Cooler Master Notepal Infinite, because it takes air from the back, and has a flat bottom surface, and is a tad cheaper. What do you think?

I know people say if you want to keep the bloatware out when installing, don't insert the driver CD, but I have 3 CDs...recovery disk 1/2 and then the driver CD. it asks me to insert the driver disk after recovery disk 1. What is the second recovery disk for?

I don't know, but it doesn't seem to be needed. Keep in mind that when you install the drivers during the recovery process, it might not install all of them, so if it doesn't just put the drivers disk back in and run the installation for the missing drivers..

You only need the first recovery disk, and the Drivers DVD ( Blue one )...
So yeah, when peoples say to not insert the drive CD, they mean to you dont insert the second recovery disk..

So, when your Vista boot up, install what you need with the Drivers DVD, the Blue One...

hmmm Kinda useless this second recovery disk tbh =D

I've had the G51VX-RX05 Best Buy model for almost a month... I think. I paid for a G51, the box and receipt said G51, but when I click on System Information, it says "G60VX." Are the G60VX and the G51VX the same laptop, or do I have a different system than what I thought I purchased?

    Thanks for your help.

The rest of the specs seem consistent with the G51. For example, it says my processor is the P7350 @ 2.00GHz. Given that, I can't figure out why the System Model would say G60VX.

well, I just tried the bluetooth for the first time. and apparently, its not installed. (G51VX-X1A) it isn't listed in device manager, and trying to install the drivers on the CD come up with the error "no bluetooth device found" or something similar. this really irritates me as I was really hoping to play with my wii remote :(

So today my gpu freaked out.. big triangles dancing across the screen while trying to play L4D. on the desktop white pixels dance around and the overall screen gets distorted. After 2 hours at best buy updating drivers and troubleshooting the conclusion was a possible buggy GPU

after me pa looks at it and i talk to Asus support, i might just have to send it in for repair. hello first 3 weeks at college without a computer :/

and for the last month and a half since i got it it's been completely fine..

The temps will be fine if you don't overclock it. However, you should still monitor your temps. You never know what the quality of the GPU you will get.

I was leaning heavily towards getting this machine, and I was wondering how big it was "in reality" - I would be taking it into class for notes, a lot of lectures, and I wanted to make sure it wouldn't be too big for those crappy pull out desk-type things they have in lecture halls.

While COD4 isn't as demanding as Crysis, on my G71 (stock settings) on a cooler, i seen it go as high as 85C on 20C ambient temp, while imo i think its safe, under higher ambient or out of a cooler might increase over 90s, the third speed of the fan kicks in between 88-89, so the laptop might not go much higher, but your laptop has a higher native resolution so your computer might work more, and might get higher temps. I agree with soviet, try to play with it and monitor temps, HWmonitor for recording highs and evga precision in game is what i use.

I dont own it, but i think it has the same chasis as the g50vt, check Clutch's Zalman NC 2000 Review w/ Pictures (ASUS G50Vt + Undervolting), you can see a lot of pics there, including one that has the dimensions on it, just crosscheck that its the same chasis.

In my case (g71) i couldn't leave the initial start up explosion as i also work and visit costumers, and what worked for me was disabling the startup extra screen in the bios, now it loads without a sound and goes like a normal computer displaying the bios and memory n drives checks etc.

Go to the BIOS (press F2 during POST) and set the volume to 0. That doesn't affect the volume in the OS

It should be able to connect perfectly. Can you detect your network? Did you enter the correct password? Did you turn wireless off? There is a physical switch to the left of the blue led indicators and FN + F2 also toggles it on and or off.

That means that you probably have set your default security for your network to something other than what your router is setting it to.

Find the security and encryption that your router is using.

Go to the wireless place in Vista and right click on your network, and properties.

Under the security tab, change the security and encryption to what your router is using as well as the password you are using.

It seems to tell me it is WPA-PSK so I tried both of those options, but they don't work either. So I will have to check again tomorrow, thanks for all your help so far!

EDIT: Nevermind! It works now after I tried WEP and set Key to 1, thank you very much for your help TevashSzat!

My G51 A1 reaches 102c max during a regular game session of Demigod, COD4, GTA4, once the fan kicks in it goes down to low 90's... this is with AS5
I think ppl going nuts over 80's are pretty lucky
