I agree.. witht he above post if all benchmarks were like Fears it would be easy to break it down...

In CS Source I had no AA and no AF, the max FPS went up to 128 and the lowest was in the mid 30's but the game was never below a non playable frame rate, always smooth as butter...

Fraps obviouisly is borked in CnC3 as the CnC3 communtiy manager told me the game is capped at 30 FPS but Fraps registers double that number? not to sure why. I have a direct e-mail from him in regards to this...

I will get Fear Benchmarks posted for you Mr. Alex ... and where can I get that demo of Call of Juarez SP Demo DX10?

Hmm I dunno ken, ~20fps is not really playable for a fps game and there is no action going on in the demo loop looks like. Not to my standards atleast.

Id cut the res to 12x7 that should give you a good boost and also allow the correct fit on your screen. I find that a lower resolution with higher detial settings always looks better than a high res with all the eye candy off.

It sometimes goes up to 30+, it's playable by just walking around in the game and you are right, the frame rate should drop if there is more action going on.

Id like for you to test out shadowrun, its a game that runs abosolutly horrible on my desktop. Its eather one of the most poorly coded games ever, or its because I dont have a dual core cpu. 5.0 vista recomended rating and my 2.8ghz opteron only gets a 4.4 everythings is in the 5.7 area tho.

I feel bad for people that paid full retial for that game :/ I got it on sale. Buy halo2 for vista (40$) and get shadowrun free. It was too good to be true I thought but I am finding shadowrun not even to be worth playing if it was given too you.

Halo 2 tho im actully enjoying, it looks better and has lower system requirements.

Hmm BF2142 has a demo that would be a good one to test, its my favorite fps game too.

Finally 3dmark06 for the 8700m gt
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

    8700m gt 06 - 5200
    8600m gt 06 - 3566

    http://laptoping.com/nvidia-geforce-8700m-gt.html

if according to this article the 8700m gt is able to handle crysis nicely, and the 8700m gt is basically an overclocked 8600m gt, does that mean if i get a fan cooler for a dell inspiron 1720 and overclock it, will i be able to play crysis as well as 8700m gt notebook owners? seems to make sense...

I dont really trust them anymore with benchmarks. Anybody know where they got this from? What resolution was it benched at? In the chart they mix many 1280x800 and 1280x1024 scores.

It is just an overclocked 8600M GT. They must have done some slight changes because it also support this dual channel memory thing. But basicly if you overclock your 8600M GT you will get very similar scores, but it will be very hard to push a 8600M GT that high. That article you linked doesnt tell anything. Whoever wrote it is just guessing. Both the 8600M GT and the 8700M GT should be able to handle Cyrsis pretty well.

edit:**** this test shows 4021 3dMark06 for the 8700GT

Me either. I think they've even mixed in some 1024x768 scores at times. And since they don't do the tests themselves, they can't really say which parameters were used.

Notebookcheck is a pretty bad source.

They test some cards under 1 system which they dont list the specs of then they test other cards on 2-4 different systems and get benchmarks numbers for those. Then they average those numbers together and post a benchmark with no mention of what the specs were or on what resolutions.

I dont think anyone ever posted the battery life for the G1S. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could do so.
Also, would it be better for gaming to have the 160GB HDD w/ 5400rpm or the 120GB w/ 7200rpm ?

Not to sound dumb or anything, but what is the average and/or max battery life you can even get on a laptop? Also, what is the weight on the g1s? It is right around 7 lbs right?

6.6 lbs on the G1S. As for battery life, I think it depends on the type of battery/laptop. But I'd say for a bran new battery 2-3 hours MAX.

It definitely depends on the type of laptop and the capacity of the battery (number of cells or watt hours). For a 15.4" with a high capacity battery you can expect 3 to 3.5 hours average. With a standard capacity maybe 2 to 2.5 hours. The G1s is a little below average, in battery life.

Maybe if it's idling. If you're doing standard word processing or internet browsing, expect 3-4 hours average.

I got a crazy but valid question  , it could save me $149. I have a g1s with the stock 2g ddr2 @667mhz, My other lappy is a Dell M90 wth 4g ddr2 @533mhz. I know I can move a 2g stick over to my G1s, and it all will run @533mhz. So....

    *My actual question is which is better for my G1s(Vista x86), 3g @533mhz, or 2g @667,..or possibley 4g @533mhz

    -thanks in advance

If you have a 64-bit OS, the 4GB @533 would be best. If not, definitely do the 3GB @ 533MHz, as 3GB RAM is supposed to have great improvement over 2GB RAM.

I got to this forum and this thread based on a search comparing the 8600M GS with the 8600M GT. I've been thinking about getting the F3SV-B1 but recently I noticed the Acer AS 5920-6313.

The processor on the Acer is not as fast, it is a T5250 running at 1.5GHz compared to the Asus T7500 2.2G. But the Acer graphics card is a 8600M GT, while the Asus is a slower 8600M GS. The Acer comes with 2G of RAM and comes with an HD-DVD drive and HDMI output.

I think the LCD display on the Asus is much higher res, although I would never run it at the maximum setting anyway, but maybe the higher res can make it look better at lower res.

The Acer is about $300 cheaper (and actually more when I consider that I'd want to add 1G of RAM to the F3SV). I am not a heavy gamer although I'd like to play a bit of MS Flight Sim X and any driving sim that was supported in Vista and I could use it with my 1080P HDTV via HDMI. Plus I could use it to play the HD-DVD movies that are available on Netflix.

So how much am I sacrificing with the Acer in terms of performance if I go with the Acer? Will it be noticible?

An 8600M GT will still be better than an 8600M GS regardless of the type of DDR memory it uses. But not so keen about the 1.5GHz cpu from the acer. Try looking for the 2.0GHz T7300 version. If you're not sure about the acer's performance, here's a link to a FEAR benchmark(but for the T7300 model): http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=136314&page=6

From what I have seen, the 2.0GHz processor for the 5920 isn't available in the US yet although it is in Europe countries.
If you want the Acer 5920 (buying from the US), I would say wait a few weeks because more variations will probably be released with better options but obviously will be slightly more expensive.

I have been considering the G1S for a while now, but I"m not too keen on the looks. If I decide to go with a F3SV-B1, how much performance will I sacrifice, i.e. will i be able to play some newer games at medium-high settings? (ex. Rainbow Six Vegas, COD 2, FEAR, etc)? Also, which has the better battery life, the F3SV or G1s?

I have another thread going about the 5920 to learn the ability to play HD-DVDs (sounds like it can do this fine enough with the 5920 and 8600M GT) but I'm starting to lean toward the opinion that I don't need the HD-DVD drive and that I might be better off putting the money into a faster processor, even though I've been convinced that I probably wouldn't notice the difference between the T5250 and a faster processor.

I'm thinking that I'd rather have a dedicated HD-DVD player plugged in HDMI to the AV system. I believe a 1080P player is in the $400 range but will drop as Christmas approaches. I still think the AS5920 is a good value computer but it might not be as useful for me as I was thinking a few days ago.

Warning* RB6Vegas is glitchy as heck on vista, I play it still but be advised several crashes per day/hour, but as far as settings....Definitly med-high is not a problem, unless you want to play on high @1600x XXXX that might change things a bit, I play on 14XXx9XX

Right now for Vegas, my resolution is 1024x768. Settings on med-high. Average fps is about 30 and I am about to finish my first playthrough and I have experienced a crash once only. That was in the beginning as I had set some settings wrong, after that, no more crashes :)

The max res is 1680x1050. The monitor will support pretty much any res but if it is not widescreen it will look stretched. The resolutions often used for gaming are 1280x800, 1440x900, and 1680x1050.

I had a G1S-A1 in my hand today! I wish I could have installed some games to test it out :p . So if I run any game at 1280x800 I'll get greater fps than the other resolutions you told AND graphics will look "ok", eh? and I must turn widescreen on in games? :)

Yes you will get more FPS, and still maintain a correct aspect ratio, so your character won't look abnormaly fat.

    Nice userbars!
