    Hey All,

Just ordered one myself last night. Still having reservations though.

It's my first "Power" Laptop replacing a dead IBM T42. This Asus was racing neck and neck with a new T500. Built in Blue Ray and Graphics throughput finally won out (and I really like ThinkPads)

Hoping I can actually read and utilze the screen for things beyond BlueRay and Games. I'm using an intermediate Acer I bought from a wholesale club and the screen is so crappy it actually gives me a headache/makes my eyes water (NEVER happened with the T42).

Is anyone doing plain old work/Internet surfing with this machine? Wondering how you find it for "everyday" use.

Ok I attempted to re-allocate 1.95GB from the G Drive to the F Drive, and I had an error reporting that "dynamic volumes are no supported by this OS"

So now I am stuck with 1.95GB of unallocated space. Im glad I only tried moving a little bit and not a lot.

Can't you resize the F: drive to cover the newly created space (I'm assuming that the letters actually indicate the physical order of the partitions on the disk, and that the empty space was created between F: and G :).

You may want to use a better featured partition manager than the Windows integrated one.

I wasn't able to resize the F: Drive at all. Just today I had a "Interactive Logon Initialization Failure" The only way I could repair it was by recovery. So since I had to do that I decided to set up RAID0 on my notebook.

I have also played Crysis Warhead on the laptop. You can run it perfectly fine in Enthusiast settings with 11-- by 9-- Resolution. It does have slowdowns at those settings. So I played at "Gamer" which doesn't change all that much. (In my opinion) If you are playing a heavy gunfight, I do notice some slowdowns, but that should be repaired when I fully test the settings.

Also when playing in full screen for some reason it reverts back to windowed mode. (By disabling the screensaver I experience it less often.

Bad news is my copy of Crysis is unplayable(Disc is Scratched), and I have to wait for X-mas for a new one.

hey guys, im in need of some help. I just recently revieved my Asus G50Vt-A2 yesterday from Lynnbay.com MODEL: Asus G50Vt-A2CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 @ 2.8GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSBMEMORY: 4GB PC2-6400/800MHz DDR2 - 2 DIMMGPU: NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS w/512MB DDR3HARD DRIVE: 2X320GB SATA-300 @ 7200RPMOS: Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 64bitsMy problem is when I play Microsoft Flight Simulator X, I put it at Highest settings for all catergories and play it fine for 10 to 15 minutes then out of nowhere the screen freezes and audio stutters for 5 seconds and then it goes to a blue screen which says something like \"if you are seeing this there is probably a problem with your newly installed hardware.\" Then that blue screen goes away after 15 seconds and takes me to a black screen which gives me three options to restart in safe mode. It has crashed like this while playing MFSX twice already while in Turbo overclock mode from the direct console. When I play it in normal mode once in a while you hear some audio stuttering for a few seconds but it goes away and I continue playing for however long I want. I downloaded the Prime95 application and tested the computer in turbo overclock mode under the blended test and it had no problems, I let it test for 40 minutes. During that time I noted from the speedFan application show that the cores were at 79 and 80 celcius. After that I tested again in Prime95 but in the benchmark mode. This is where after a minute or two of starting the test my laptop completely crashed and resarted straight to the black screen with the safemode options. I then again ran Prime95 in benchmark mode but this time in normal clock speed instead of Turbo overclock and it completed the test and didnt crash. What I want to know is, what is going on with my laptop? is my processor too fast for this laptop because in turbo overclock mode it jumps from 2.8GHz to 3.1Ghz as read from CPU-ID. Could it be that the reseller I got the laptop from didnt install the CPU correctly? I also did that windows experience base index score thingy and my base score is a 5.6 while running in turbo overclock mode. 5.9 for memory, 5.9 for graphics, 5.8 gaming graphics, 5.8 disk data transfer rate. With those scores wouldnt it be perfect for running high end games without crashing??? if anybody out there can help me that would be awesome. what do I have to do to get it to stop crashing?

try using different drivers; incidently, which drivers are you using now? Try Doxs 180.70 from laptopvideo2go.com. If not, try the stock drivers from the same website.

I played FSX, but I cannot max the settings (I like lots of AI traffic, so high is good for me) Well anyway, I can play with a maxed Frame Rate of 23, but I still experience stutters and I cannot get these to go away at any settings.

Thats what I meant for the CD, but I have to contact EA, and shipping... So it will probably make it back before or around Christmas.

I beat Warhead, and I changed Shadows & Shaders to Mainstream, and left al else at gamer. Boy does the game look nice, for a laptop. I found a fix for the reverting to windowed mode, disabling the screensaver and sleep mode.

Just bought my G50vt-A2 from Gentech's Ebay site. $1795.00 - $200.00 Cash Back from Live Search = Net $1595.00!!

For this beastie, I feel that is a great price, but benchmarks could prove me wrong!!

Full Review will come when I get it and test it with various drivers, etc.

Yes, it can. To set it in RAID, you'll need to change the settings in your BIOS. Make sure you back up all your data before doing so as changing the RAID settings will format your hard drives.

hey guys, i'm new to notebookreview, in the sense that this is my first ever post. i've been haunting all the g50v-a1s and the g50vt forums for information before making my final decision.

i am going to be a proud owner of the g50vt in about 7 hours, but before i secure the purchase, can people please tell me that despite the bits of problems here and there, that they are generally overall satisfied with it as a gaming machine?

i mean BSODs, keyboard lags, and partition issues, that has to do with specific models right and not Asus' build generally?

i just need to ensure i get the latest nvidia drivers from lv2g for the 9800m gs right? do i need to update any other drivers? i'd consider myself well-versed with various hardware technicalities but i'm still a noob when it comes to doing all this stuff.

    thank you very much

Never had a single BSOD, keyboard doesn't lag for me on the original BIOS, and the partitions can easily be moved about with Easus partition manager.
Its an awesome machine, maxes out CODs, eats up GTA IV in my opinion. The graphics look fantastic and its smooth as it possibly can be!
I'm running 180.84 and don't intend on changing any time soon, as these drivers are pretty awesome and are serving me well.
Any more info you want just PM me!

    Hey Guys,

Just got my comp today in Australia.

    The specs are:

    SCREEN: 15.4” WSXGA 1680x1050 "CSV-Colorshine" WIDE-SCREEN LCD/TFT
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53GHz - 1066MHz-FSB
    RAM: 4GB/4096MB DDR2 RAM
    HDD: 570GB HDD Set = 1 x 250GB HDD @ 7200RPM, 1 x 320GB HDD @ 7200RPM
    ODD: DVD-Burner Dual Layer DVD+/-RW
VIDEO: nVidia GeForce 9800M GS 512MB DDR3 Graphics
OS: 64Bit Windows Vista Home PREMIUM
EXTRAS: Asus Backpack & Gaming Mouse
    OTHER FEATURES: 802.11N, Web-Cam, Bluetooth, RJ-45 LAN, eSATA, HDMI, 56k Fax/Modem

I have a few questions to ask if you can help me?

    - The comp came with Vista Home Premium pre-installed with all the bloatware (norton, msoffice etc) and I don't want that. I'm thinking of re-installing vista as a clean install.. any ideas?

    - I also want to partition my drives whilst i'm at it. For the first HDD I was thinking of having 50GB for OS and the rest for games and programs. I don't think I want to partition the second HDD and use the entire space solely for data. What do you guys recommend?

    - Lastly, does any1 know why the free space on the drives are not what they should be? for example the first drive came partitioned. One was called vista64 and the other data - this is on the 250GB drive. Why does the total space not equal to 250GB? Even on the second 320GB drive it only says 260GB total space.. Where has all my space gone?

I'm hoping if I re-format it will fix this!

p.s. sorry for the noobness :p

I get 232GB total space for my second 250GB HDD. I think it is one of those unit conversion things, where the HDD makers have a GB as being 1,000,000,000 bytes, and Windows sees a GB as being 1,073,741,824 bytes (1024^3 bytes).

The math seems to be self-consistent, so I think it got it right this time, but please correct me if I'm wrong since I'm bad at math...couldn't do my dream majors because of math requirements :(

Hi folks! I'm choosing gaming laptop and one of primary tasks for it is to perform great in GTA 4.
Did anyone tested G50Vt in this game using FRAPS (or anything else)? How many FPS it does in its native screen resolution on maximal settings? Please indicate resolution of screen on your laptop because it varies on this model. If there's at least 40 FPS I would definitely buy this thing.
Of course GTA 4 is hungry for video memory and 1GB of GDDR would be better than 512MB for it. Can GTA 4 use system memory sharing to increase amount of video memory on this laptop? Which amount of video memory GTA 4 reports in its settings?

First off, your never gunna get 40FPS on GTA IV with max settings on ANY laptop.
Secondly, GTA IV only allows settings to go up to a certain point determined by your graphics and processing options. If you run everything as high as the game allows, you'll get about 10FPS. But if you lower Detail distance (i think its that one) you'll get 20FPS on full 1680x1050 res and everything max is it will allow. GTA IV is a strange game so 20FPS is very smooth, i personally think.
If you want 40FPS on max settings look into getting SLI GTX280s in a desktop...

    Quick Question:

Do the WASD keys light up at all on the G50VT? I remember seeing pictures of them lit up but maybe that was the G71?

Also, how come every time I restart/boot up my G50 windows vista says it's updating and it takes forever to start up? is there some way to stop vista updating all the time?

No. :( They are marked with little red directional arrows. Not clear why they did that...any gamer worth their salt can do WASD in their sleep.

It would have made it easier if they were lit to find them in the dark that's all :( I thought it may have been part of the asus software that lets them be enabled/disabled like everything else

I think this went unanswered. See Info Booth, and then theFAQ, there is a question that explains how you can do a clean install.

I actually recommend a clean install over removing the bloatware, as that leads to a cleaner system. But only if you can afford the time, since the differences will not be major I expect.

Thanks tenspeed for the advice, I did end up getting the PC. it friggin rocks, i got a later model so i guess i haven't experienced any of the issues that the earlier models did.

you're right, COD5 is like wicked on it, although i have yet to try GTA4. this laptop is best buy ever, especially with goodies like a gaming headset and a razer mouse. mmmmm.

oh and coheed and cambria rocks.

I know that it will be a miracle if this laptop will show 40 FPS in GTA 4 with max settings. I meant that in this case I'd not think anymore and buy it immediately.
I just want to know real amount of FPS in this game (not estimated) to decide if it would be enough for me or not. Especially interesting for me is performance in resolution 1366×768 which is found on some G50Vt. I prefer higher graphic settings rather than higher resolution.

I run Crysis in 1680 x 1050 in high setting (Water and Particles set to very high) and it's definately playable! - AA set to off. So I would imagine if I drop the resolution and increase the settings it would still run fine.

I think Crysis is more power hungry than GTA 4 so if that's the case, you should be right with it

Do you think these weights are wrong?

    http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-g50vta2-1589-after-asus-mail-rebate-p-2480.html

    http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus-g50vt-a1-core/4507-3121_7-33414173.html?tag=mncol;rnav

I am really getting confused. Every site gives a different weight.

    And from this review....
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=311122

The HP DV5T weighs 5.5 lb and howard says that they are almost the same weight.

    I cannot understand this.

Are these models have different weight?

At bestbuy it is mentioned that it weighs 7.3 lb but some people are saying that this is with the weight of the ac adaptor

AFAIK all recent ASUS laptops have a dual line out / optical out jack; the optical out I think supports 5.1 channels.

If you go to the ASUS website and check the model specs (See Info BoothFAQ for how to do it) you will find a weight which typically does not include the battery, adapter, or any removable component (e.g., if the ODD is hotswappable that weight does not include the ODD). However: it might be that the size and weight quoted on the ASUS site is actually a copy paste from an older model and is therefore incorrect (I remember something like that being discussed, but right now I don't know if it was about the G50 model or another one).

Well sometimes people just don't know the answers... :)

Can someone run 3dmark05 atleast 2 times over with this laptop with the setting all at the highest and tell me what your max temp is? I am getting 93C!

Curiously enough I flashed it to the GTS bios which raises the voltage and my max temps haven't changed. Is this too high? I think it is are.

BTW here is the link to the 9800m GS OC thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=336013

I believe the dimensions for the G50 on the Asus website are copied from the G1. But of course the G50 is larger than the G1, so take the stuff from websites with a grain of salt. I'd trust Flbroker's measurements instead. Less than a pound makes no difference unless you are planning a mission into space. If you want a serious gaming laptop, be prepared to put up with the size and weight. Or just start going to the gym.

There are a few things still bugging me about the laptop..

    1) the capslock button when pressed brings up a little box that say's "CAPS LOCK: ON/OFF" This is not an issue unless your in a game at full screen. If you accidentally press the Capslock button, the game will instantly minimize and the caps lock box will appear. You then have to go back into the settings of the game and click 'full screen' to continue playing the game at full screen. Is there a way to disable this caps lock box that appears??

    2) My second LCD screen (OSD) does not show mail/msn messages. I can customize it to show memory & CPU and have it to toggle on/off just fine through the direct console but I can's make it work with my msn/mail messages. My question is - is it meant to automatically detect that my msn is on when I check the msn box through the console etc or is there another setting that needs to be tuned? Maybe it dosn't reckognise the version of msn ? -i am using MSN live v. 9.0 btw

Your comments will be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers.

    1) Assuming that this is due to the ATK software, you could try uninstalling the ATKOSD utility/utilities and see if that removes the animation.

    2) Have you looked at the LCDHype customizations for the G50 OLED? See Info Booth, "Customize your G50 OLED". They offer much more than what you can accomplish with DirectConsole.

What drivers is everyone using for their NVIDIA right now? I am contemplating on upgrading from 179.14 to either 179.28 or 179.48. Any suggestions? Which ones have better benchmarks for gaming?

    Hey Tenspeed33,
I was wondering which drivers you are currently using for your 9800m GS. Also, do you know any good websites indicating the benchmarks for the different DOX drivers available?

    Thanks

I'm currently trying to find the best drivers for me, everybody differs. It all depends on whether you want FPS, better performance in certain games, all sorts. I'm currently trying out 182.05 tho

I´m also looking to by this notebook, but my main reason to sell my 17´Vaio is that it was too huge for carrying around as a laptop. By the way u guys are saying, this G50vt is larger than others 15.4´, almost a 17´?

Is is too huge for carryring around?

    tks
