    I have the same model.

Almost all the drivers were out of date. I got a lot of them directly through Intel. If you look at the installed apps in control panel, you can see which ones to download. Did you uninstall McAfee? Anecdotally, I feel like the wireless driver updates helped with internet speeds. Of course, I have no idea if any of this would make a difference. I don't remember the fans making a lot of noise early on. It seems like there has to be something that's telling your system to use the fans. Is there a way to contact Asus about it?

Yea i filled out a service request still waiting for a reply. I will look at all of the drivers a second time. I think i uninstalled mcafee, it is hard to tell with windows 8. Had the worst time ever just trying to get rid of the wild tangent game crapware. Windows 8.1 is so non user friendly, my phone has a better OS. Wish I could downgrade to 7 easily.

I bought the UX301LA-DE022H back in October 2013 when it was first available in Austria. About a month ago the laptop started booting directly to BIOS (or I guess it's called UEFI these days?). There, the two SSDs no longer showed up, so it seemed as if either one of the SSDs had failed, or something was wrong with the SATA/RAID controller. I sent the laptop for repair under warranty (with saturn.at), and today they told me that the laptop could not be repaired and I got a full refund.

While it was working, it was a really excellent laptop though - easily the best laptop I have owned. I only had two other minor problems with it. First, it once (and only once) happened that the battery would not charge. When the power was plugged in the battery would not discharge, but it would not charge either. I googled this problem and people had reported this problem for other Asus models (not the UX301LA thouugh). I fixed it by completely discharging the battery (so that the laptop would shut off itself before even reaching the OS). Another thing that happened twice (I think) was the laptop suddenly shutting off, as if the battery had run out compeltely, even though the battery was fully charged and the power was plugged in. This could be related to the other issue.

Anyway, I would have gotten a new UX301LA from the shop right away, but they had had stopped carrying it for some reason. Maybe due to high failure rate? Who knows.

These are my biggest fears for this ultrabook and just about any ultrabook. The battery cannot be replaced by the user and on this model there is a specific form-factor which makes SSD replacement hard or impossible for the user to replace. I keep my laptops for a long time and all my laptops in the past have eventually had HDD and battery failures which isn't the end of the world when you can replace them. But I don't have a good feeling about ASUS's support network in or out of warranty. One think that makes me consider a Mac next time is that, in the US at least, you can go to a local store and get service reasonably quickly.

Well, now that my UX301LA is defunct I may just wait for the Zenbook NX500. Looks promising. :)

    Hello all.

I recently talked my girlfriend (chronic mac individual) into getting an Asus UX301LA-DH71T. It is a beautiful piece of hardware. I wiped the partitions of the ssd drives, created 1 partition, then installed windows 8.1 onto the notebook, all before playing with and testing the computer.

She is suffering from an ongoing issue regarding the Intel AC 7260 dualband wireless card and I'm wondering if other ux301 owners are having similiar issues. Mostly this deals with the 2.4 ghz bandwidth connection (most wireless connections out there). It is suffering from limited connections, dropped or weak signals, very slow speeds, etc. all the while lesser wireless cards are working excellent within the same range. This isn't an isolated issue as can be seen in the card's support forums. I've tried several different drivers and am currently on the latest (PROSet 17.0). If I connect her notebook to the router at my apartment on the 5.2 ghz band it appears to have excellent performance/speed; however, her campus and other common places are not running 5.2 ghz bands. We've resorted to using a USB Belkin F7D2101 N300 Micro Wireless Adapter in the meantime. Given the cost of this machine I'd hoped there wouldn't be any unbearable issues such as this.

My question, has anyone else had poor performance issues with their UX301's wireless card?

If so what steps were followed to resolve the problem?

    Thank you

What is the average battery life that you are getting? i am reading reviews where they say they get 7-8 hours however i saw 2 people here indicating they struggle to get 4 hours, was trying to see before i buy i would like a ultrabook that had a decent battery and not as much as my old one

Remember that there are different versions of this ultrabook. I have iris graphics and 45 TDP on my version. Ultimately, everyone has to choose between performance and battery life. A lot of ultrabooks have 4400 graphics and a lower TDP. Personally, I'm almost always close to a power source and would rather have more performance.

i decided to purchase the i7-4558u with the 2x128gbs.I have been reading everywhere that this laptop is configured in raid0 however when I go to my computer I see that I have 2 logical drives, c and d where c has around 60gb free and d is completely empty. My understanding was that raid 0 would strip half of the "info" on each of them, they should have identical free space on both of them and i would think it would show as a logical drive under my computer and not 2, I checked the bios and the device manager and it says that its configured in raid, I am completely lost.... any help explaining this would be appreciated

I don't know why it says it's in RAID, but mine also shows up as two drives and I when I was reading previews/reviews they said it would be in RAID. I don't really care though because I just put all my data on D. You can move the common windows user directories too.

I'm about to order Zenbook UX301LA, but I am not sure as to what online stores carry them with Kingston's M.2 2260 SSD. Is there anyway to find that out?

Anyone have any idea if it's possible to over clock the ram? It would significantly improve graphics performance.

It *is* RAID-0. You can still have two (or any number of) partitions when you use RAID. :)

    Help and advice required!

I have the UX301LA-XH72T and have been delighted with it up until now.

I was trying to restore an Acronis Trueimage 2014 backup to my C: drive this morning from an external hard drive via USB. I have done this many times before, but today the process failed with an error message and it has left my system in an inconsistent state. My system fails to boot and cycles through the "Preparing automatic repair", "Diagnosing your PC" & "Attempting repairs" before finally admitting defeat with "Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC”.

My first thought was to restore back to factory image, install Trueimage and try to restore the backup again. When I tried to restore to the factory image, this failed too. I select "Reset your PC" from the recovery menu, click next at the prompt and receive "Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing".

I have been able to get to a command prompt and can see that my disks and partitions are not as they were... There is a chunk of free space and what was the D: drive now seems to be being presented as the C: drive. I think what has happened is that the partition and volume table has been corrupted - I have been nowhere near them. I think I need to find a way to recover my original settings.

Can anyone else with a similar model please post equivalent Diskpart output to show how the volumes and partitions were configured out of the box? (my diskpart output is shown below)

If anyone can think of a better way to resolve this I would be very interested. I have tried 'Partition Wizard' from a bootable USB but it couldn't seem to recover things. I am not that keen to go down the clean install route but accept I might be forced that way.

Any advice much appreciated. Thanks in anticipation. James.

Has anyone else noticed that in the power options the minimum processor state changes to 100% and the system cooling policy changes to active after it has been changed? Is there a fix for this or is the cause even known?
EDIT: I found its to do with the Asus Smart Gesture program overriding the windows power option when you perform a gesture. To fix it uninstall asus smart gesture and install the generic drivers ( http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=Touchpad)

Sometimes complaints can dominate online discussions about products. Happy customers tend not to post, although I'm mostly happy with my computer. My only reservations relate to it being a PC and having a touchscreen, which is what most of its competition have.

They are, see the NotebookCheck review:

However, it's in M.2 form factor, which has a wide range of possible dimensions.
The Zenbook's is 22x60mm. Depending on available space (and extra support positions for the card's screw) they might have allowed different form factors. Width certainly is not a variable; there's no room, but it just might be possible to use an 80mm. You'll have to take a look yourself though; don't own the laptop.

Transcend offers a 22x60mm M.2 of 512GB, so you could upgrade to 1TB atm.

By the by, though the Infinity is not on my wish list (RAM soldered on MB) I really do want its lcd... .
So if anyone finds the screen too glossy; we can swap :) .

    Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has attempted to install Windows 7 on this laptop? I assume the main problem will be finding the Hard Drive raid drivers but thought I would just check.

    Cheers in advance.

You can still install Win7 on this notebook, the drivers are available on support.intel.com, so you will just need to make sure that SecureBoot is disabled and Legacy mode is enabled.
ASUS is not supporting Windows 7 due to cost reasons behind this, but nevertheless Intel RAID is performed through Intel Rapid Storage Technology.

Thanks Kevin, that was the one I was struggling with! I'll add the zip file in the link to a USB drive to hopefully get through the Windows setup.

Another question if you don't mind. Are there any drivers not available for Win 7 for this notebook, would I lose any functionality or are they all out there on manufactures websites?

Most of driver packs contains Win7 drivers, but if not you can always find it from the component manufacturer's website because they are all available.

My first post here! I'm due to buy the Asus UX301LA but still can't decide on which configuration to get.

Here in Hong Kong, they have 4 different configurations:

    1) UX301LA-C4015H
    i5-4200U, 256GB SSD (RAID 0), FHD 1920x1080 touchscreen
    HK$9380 / US$1203

    2) UX301LA-DE027H
    i5-4200U, 256GB SSD (RAID 0), WQHD 2560x1440 touchscreen
    HK$9980 / US$1280

    3) UX301LA-C4013H
    i7-4500U, 512GB SSD (RAID 0), FHD 1920x1080 touchscreen
    HK$11980 / US$1536

    4) UX301LA-DE002H
    i7-4558U, 512GB SSD (RAID 0), WQHD 2560x1440 touchscreen
    HK$12980 / US$1664

I will mainly use this laptop to retouch photos from DSLR, the usual office applications and internet browsing. No gaming at all. Which screen has the better colour accuracy for my photoshop work? Full HD or WQHD?

    Thanks in advance!

sRGB coverage for both displays is what you should aim for:

So this is an easy choice; the WQHD is the clear winner here. Not 100% sRGB though (let alone Adobe RGB), but if you're set on this laptop then definitely the WQHD. Wouldn't take the $400 for the i7 and additional 256Gb ssd. Prices drop incredibly fast, so upgrade in a year or so and you'd pay less for more.

That being said ... though this Zenbook has a fantastically beautiful screen, it's a bit so-so when it comes to accurate colour reproduction (that's what a DreamColor is for) and it's a mere 13.3". So I'd go for your 2nd option (WQHD & i5) and get a nice 30" monitor for situations when accuracy is truly paramount.

Thanks mate! Yes, I was pretty much set on this laptop, or a Macbook Pro Retina running Windows via Bootcamp, as I have some software which requires Windows.

I followed your advice and got the i5 with WQHD. I'm really happy so far but still trying to get used to the Windows 8 interface.

Hello, i am not sure how to decribe my problem but i have some issues with the display and the red/pink colors on the new windows 8 metro screen. When i scroll through my tiles or through the apps-menu, the pink-tiles/apps (e.g. maps or camera) have some blue borders on the left and right side of the icons during the scrolling. For the red icons there is a black border. Is this normal or am i maybe missing a driver for that? I upgraded the ssds and did a clean install with windows 8 pro, so maybe i forgot to install something which can fix this?
It is not a big deal, because videos and games look just fine and i barely use the new metro screen. I am just curious if maybe something is wrong with my display.

4GB if it's just basic things, but 8GB is better for some extended usages which comes in handy when needed.

They all came with the same layout so there isn't any variant with 4GB.
I could be wrong because it is possible with other regions/emerging markets.

hello everyone, I got the UX301LA. I am a little bit concerned about the fan noise. It is not loud, but the sound is strong. Maybe buzzing? This is the sound recorded with my phone up close to the fan area. Can someone see if this is normal?

    Hi Guys,

I'm having some problems with the HDMI output with this Asus Zenbook when I plug it into my Samsung LED TV. The strange thing I can't explain is the first time I connected there was nothing wrong, I could see the laptop screen on my TV. One week later I tried it again but there was no signal, I have tried everything I know but I can't get it to work. Anyone any ideas???

    Thanks

Change the input source to the correct one first, then plug in the HDMI cable.
Also, check screen resolution setting and make sure you have activated the secondary display.

Hi! My laptop won't power on and I'd like to retrieve the data before trying to get it repaired under warranty. Unfortunately I never undid the default raid setup. Does anyone know of a way I could offload the data prior to shipping the laptop in for warranty work?

    Hi,

I've tried setting the input first but that didn't work.
I've made sure secondary display is activated.
The only thing I can see is a notice that "the screen resolution for the secondary screen is to lower than 1024x768" but I can't change the setting (greyed out). When I switch back to "only computerscreen" I can change the resolution but that isn't needed (it's on recommended 1920x1080).
Maybe someone can explain why I can't change the screen resolution when Duplicate screen is activated?

    Try another HDMI cable.
Also, don't use duplicate screen but independent display for now.
    Additionally, update the VGA driver.

    Hi everyone and quick question,
where do i find Function Key lock settings in windows 8:

pressing FN key for 20-30seconds doesn't work
FN key + num lock is unavailable since i couldn't find num lock button either

Basically would like to use brightness, media keys, and other function keys with out pressing FN first.

    Thank you in advance

This is a feature with certain US-branded notebooks such as HP, which is possibly not available with Taiwanese-branded notebooks.

Hi guys. I'm looking at this laptop for writing, watching movies and some Photoshop. If you had to buy another laptop right now, would you buy this one again? I'm mainly looking for portability, speed and not too loud/hot. Thanks!

Put MSI GS30 on your list too.

    Hey everyone,

It looks like one of the SSDs in my UX301LA has failed. Only one drive shows up in the BIOS, and in the Configuration Utility it says an "Error Occurred" with the other. I'm out of warranty so I opened up my laptop today and swapped the drives around to confirm it was an issue with the drive itself; even with the drives swapped the Configuration Utility showed the same SSD had failed (confirmed by serial number).

So I'm looking to replace the part, which is a SanDisk SSD X110, part number SD65P1M-256G-1002. I can't seem to find the exact part anywhere (I believe it's OEM?) but I see plenty of SD65SP1M-256G-10 12 SSDs around on eBay etc. Is there any reason to believe the -1012 SSD wouldn't work as a replacement for the failed -1002 SSD?

Also, does anyone know how I would go about getting the installation media for Windows 8, to reinstall the operating system once I've replaced the failed SSD? Obviously because the drives were set up as a RAID 0 array I've lost all the data that was on both of them.

You can use a different SSD as long as capacity matches, or you can upgrade all of your SSD to the better ones.
As far as installation media goes, you can check with ASUS to obtain the original recovery discs.
