    Hey guys

I'm just wondering why this notebook does not feature Precision Touchpad.

I used to have a notebook with Precision touchpad and it was super smooth. Now with this Zenbook I have to use ASUS Smart Gesture instead. It is not as smooth as the precision one and pretty annoying to me

Best to direct this question directly to Asus. As users, we have no idea why Asus chooses one component maker over another or how they develop their software.

However, if you look at Microsoft's page on precision touchpad: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/touchpad, you'll noticed the gestures enabled by a precision touchpad are all supported, so perhaps your issues is more due to driver software than the touchpad hardware.

The gestures are still somewhat finicky, but I have figured out how to use them.

    Hey guys!
Just new to this forum, but I have many problems on my UX501JW and I don't know why.

First: My retroiluminated keyboard does not work, anyone had the same?
Second: After upgrading to Windows 10, my drivers went crazy, solved them neally all, but my Asus USB3.0 to Ethernet it is connecting and disconnecting all the time, anyone knows what that could be and how to solve it?

    Thank you!

Did you install the ATK drivers? That might fix your keyboard back light issue.

For the USB Ethernet issue, try different USB ports. You can also try uninstalling the driver using usbdeview and let Windows reinstall the device.

I did install just now ATK drivers and it doesn't fix anything. Is there another way to get the back light work?
I think I solved the Ethernet issue, thanks.

May I ask how did you remove the rubber feet at the bottom of the laptop? I also wanted to swap out the HDD but it seems very difficult to get those rubber feet off.

Use a thin flathead screwdriver and pry carefully. The feets are attached with double sided tape.

If I open the laptop gently, is there any way for the tech to know it has been opened? I sent my laptop for a repair and asked the tech to let me know if the model supports ssd. They didnt and said we cant tell u (cant think of a logical reason).

So I'd like to open and figure out myself.

If this is the US model with 4k display and 512gb ssd, then there is no need to open it up to upgrade. The only potential upgrade you can get is a 1tb pcie ssd, but those are not available yet.

If you have a fhd display with ssd + HDD, then you can replace both the ssd and HDD.

My unit came with a FHD and 1TB HDD. I just want to figure out if there is a place for SSD so i can have SSD + HDD. And if there is, then i'd like to figure out which ssd to buy.

You should also have a m.2 SATA SSD as the boot drive (Likely a 128GB). You can replace the m.2 SSD with something larger and also replace the 1TB HDD with a SSD (I'm assuming 7mm drive height). A quick search on google would get you a list of replacement drives from crucial, samsung and other vendors. Read some reviews and pick the drive most suited for your needs/budget.

That's a m.2 connector. Make sure you get the SATA version and not the PCIE x4 version.

So far I am quite happy with the laptop.

The two biggest points I complain about are:

    1. The display can only be bent to a 100° angle (?) Every single laptop I owned was able to bent to at least 140°.
    2. Display brightness does not go very high or low. (Compared to my old laptop)

    Hello.
    1. Openning angle is 125° on my device. Take a look. It could be bigger for the comfortable work.
    2. The brightness is OK when you are not outdoor, but it's a problem of glossy screen. The contrast is also not good in this model (UHD matrix). Yellow is the biggest problem of this laptop.

Has anyone of you managed to get flash work properly? I have UHD screen with windows scaling, but Adobe Flash in Firefox (only) still looks horrible. I only get this problem in Firefox so I wanted to ask you guys how it looks for you.
note: on Youtube it's okay since it uses HTML5.

This is how it looks on my screen:

that webpage looks the same to me, however its the first time i've seen the problem. Is it flash or actually just a few websites that are not yet optimized for 4k ?

Yeah so apparently this isnt m2. SATA . I took it to few technicians. One had a spare m.2 SATA handy and he tried to put it. The connector didnt fit. M.2 SATA has 3 notches whereas this socket takes two notches.

All of the technicians said to search on the internet for the appropriate SSD.

The only one I see fitting this socket is the M2. PCIE SSD. Since it has two notches

I asked ASUS support twice for which model this is. First guy said PCIE. 2nd guy told me this is M.2 SATA.

I dont even know whats going on. Everybody seems to have different answers.

Most SATA based drives are universally keyed with two notches. I'd stick with the type originally shipped in the model.

I meant the type that the unit can ship with at stock. Not necessarily your specific SKU.

There's no reason to be scared of the temps - asus have throttled ux501 so hard that the cpu cannot go higher than 85c (15c below intel recomendation and the maximum throttlelimit for vendors) and the gpu 78c (about 15c below nvidia limits). Both thermal limits are far below any damaging temps, which you should not worry about anyway since hardware limits would ensure no damage would come due to temperatures.

Did it come with an ssd? otherwise look at the previous page.

Has anyone sent in the UX501 for repairs and notice if the yellows were fixed to have bright yellows and not mellow/mustard like??

I am sending it in and requesting a screen replacement. Any advise to fixing it before sending it in or if they do indeed fix it?

I am unsure if it is all Samsung 4k displays or a select few.

All the 4k panels are affected, it's a defect in the hardware itself - as it is evident on the several other laptops that use the same panel. So unless they changed vendors don't expect a change.

But it appears with screen flash dedicated to specific panels seems to work based on http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...3-nvidia-gt-840m.746873/page-160#post-9856614

Also I read Lenovo released a bios update for their yoga laptop which repaired their yellow issue. I do not see why Asus does not do the same for the price paid.

    Hi guys,

I'm looking to Asus UX501 model to buy. But Im so confused, I think there are a couple of different models and I can't find whole models and whole specs.

These are the models that I found so far:
    UX501JW-FJ192H (16 GB ram??)
    UX501JW-FI184T (8 GB ram??)
    UX501JW-DH71T ($2,512.37 on Amazon.com)
    UX501JW-DS71T ($1,549.00 on Amazon.com)

Can you help me with this confusing please? Are these all models or is there any other model?
What are the differencies between these models? Or where can I find this info?

    Thanks.

The screen flickering issue was fixed with bios 209 on the ux501, it had nothing to do with the panel really.

As far as I know, none of the yoga models are 4k screens, hence not the same.If lenovo had a fix for the yellows the y50 4k model would have had them fixed as it has the same problems as the ux501, due to them using the same screen.

Those are just different configurations of the laptop. The normal different distributions are varied in the screen type (4k glossy, 4k matte and 1080 matte), the ram (2x4gb, 2x8gb and 1x8gb soldered) and the harddrive (512 bg pcie sm951, 256gb sandisk ssd, 256gb sandisk and 1tb hdd and lastly 1tb hdd). some models also vary in the size of the battery 4 cell vs 6 cell, whereas the the smaller battery models can hold an oldschool harddrive. The different configuration models are usually dependant on the vendor, so can't help you much there :)

I have used a Dell Precision M4500 for years as my professional laptop but recently purchased loaded UX 501 in US. I've been struggling to figure out my new setup for some new monitors including a new docking station. So first question, will the Intel 4600 support these monitor setups if I choose:

    • Two 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) - displays one from laptop and one to 4k monitor?

Laptop Monitor at 4K plus Two 2560 x 1600 displays

Also, does it matter if you use a Thunderbolt, UBS 3.0 , or HDMI cable to achieve each display configuration?

And has anyone found a great working docking station that could work with external 4K monitor

You'll need the PCB with the SATA connector. Is this a photo of your notebook or just a photo you found on the net? Based on the Chinese captions, the photo seems to be from a repair/disassembly guide of some sort, so whoever took the photo probably removed the PCB.

You may be able to daisy chain two monitors using display port. AFAIK, the HDMI port is not 2.0, so you won't be able to get 4k resolution from it.

I am currently having some trouble with my Wifi. I will work on my computer for a while and suddenly the wifi is just gone. When I try to activate it again it does not show any networks available. I am doing some CAD modeling and after a while the Wifi is just gone. Does anyone else have this problem? It usually works again after 1 or 2 restarts of the computer.

My Wifi driver is the newest.

The intel 4600 will support up to 4 screens - as I remember, however your connections will struggle to keep up. Using your mini display port you can have a setup of 2, 3 or even 4 monitors, I would however not advice you to use 4k monitors, as they will be limitied to 30hz in that resolution. I have not yet seen a dockingstaion for this setup, I my self use a active usb hub and a miniDp to connect. As it was said above the HDMI is version 1.4. hence it will be limited in it capabilities, the USB 3.0 port are to slow for screen usage and you will have rather lilited options trying to find a thunderbolt display - the minidisplay port is you best option - other than that it doesn't matter which port you use, but you ofcourse can't have both a miniDp and thunderbolt at the same time - HDMI and miniDp will work :D
