I know that the X83Vm that BB offers had an OEM label on the box very clearly stating some variant of "N80", because when I went to check it out at BB I had them pull one new from a box so I could scope the packaging. I am not sure what the X83Vb is based off of, but probably a similar/same chassis as the N80 series.

It's available at best buy for 690 with a case and mouse. It's not available in stores so looks like I may be ordering one.

I am looking to buy a laptop, this one caught my eye when I was in Bestbuy and saw it was on sale for $650.00. I want a laptop that I can use for school and playing WoW and Warhammer on. I know very little about computers. I don't have tons of money to spend that's why i liked this one. Will this be able to run Warhammer without any problems? Is there a better laptop out there in the same price range?

    Thanks

I went to buy one on clearance. They were oos at my bestbuy but I got a X83Vb-X2 for $649 instead. Same lappy but a slightly faster cpu. Oh and its bubbly dark blue. I like the looks better. I am happy so far. No gaming yet. I downgraded to XPMCE (drivers kinda hard to find, one ! still in device manager). Everything seems to work though. I got this to replace my HP DV9207 that died via the "unknown" Nvidia issue and haven't looked back since.

    Pros:
    Quiet
    Cool (looks and operation)
    Decent battery life
    Not too much bloat
Value for dollar (from a boxstore)
    SATA external port (nice)
Lighter than some of my older same size lappys

    Cons:
xp drivers took time to find
no modem (any one use those still?)
no built in bluetooth (buttons built in laptop)
keyboard hard the see in the dark ( I'm used to full sized layout)
    fingerprint MAGNET
stiff touchpad buttons (they do not have to be this hard)

    Would I buy again:
Maybe as bang for the buck OK. I think its a good not great deal. I might try a build your own next time.

I just got the x83vm-x1 from BB for $649. Those knuckleheads had it on display as the vb. I looked at the vista score of 5 and was like: I want this one! They sent me out of the store with the vb. I opened it and realized what they had done. Took it back and they gave the the display vm for the same price. Thanks for the gift BB. I use it to run adobe cs4 and it absolutely flies. PS starts up in like three seconds. And 3d stuff in AE is smooth as silk. Even my desktop with a HD3850 wasn't this snappy. And the led screen is amazing. :D

Sorry for bumpin this older thread but I have a few questions about this specific notebook...

I just purchased this model, but the processor doesnt seem as if its the greatest compared to the new laptops today.

This is the processor that is coming with the laptop: Core 2 Duo T5800 2.0GHz

And i was wondering if the motherboard will let me upgrade the processer and which ones would be compatable?

*Also, is anybody running Windows 7 64-bit on this specific laptop and if you are was it hard to find drivers?

You should safely be able to upgrade your CPU to a T5900, however any other CPUs are will be questionable.

Try using the drivers from your driver disk. It will say it's for Vista only, but if you navigate through the folders, you should be able to install most of them on XP.

No problem. If you're referring to the chipset, it's the Intel GM45 Express.

Well I really love the laptop so far and am running Windows 7 with no driver issues at all BUT one thing that I hate is the keyboard. I cant see it when in low light so I was wondering, and hopefully David you will read this....

Is there a replacement keyboard that has white lettering on the keys ant I can plug in play into it? Maybe from a different model?

    I don't believe it comes with a built-in BT.

I'm not certain if it'll work, but if any other Asus keyboard will work on the X83, it'll be the N80. I'm only saying this because both are 14" notebooks and both the X83 and N80 series uses the same battery which makes it more likely that they share a similar chassis.

Take into account even if the keyboard looks exactly the same from the outside, it will typically not work just the same, because the connectors underneath that go to the motherboard may not be the same.

I know this happens with the W7 and F6 keyboards for instance. Exactly the same outside, different and incompatible connectors inside.

Quick question for anyone else who has the X83Vb-X1 from best buy... Anyone know if the laptop will support more than 4GB of memory? I can tell that it has two memory slots, but I can't find any real information about the motherboard in this laptop...

Granted, I'm not sure what kinda of boost I would get going from 4GB to 8GB, but its got Vista 64 bit and I am kinda curious!

    Sincerely,
    MXD

I don't think anyone has tried putting 8GB of ram on the X83Bv-X1, but having the GM45 Express Chipset, the X83 should support 8GB of ram given that the BIOS is capable of recognizing it too.

Just curious, why would you need 8GB? Will you be using VMs? That's really the only thing that would need 8GB of memory.

Thanks for the information about the 8GB of RAM.

Yes, you guessed it. :) I'm going to be upgrading my laptop soon and I was thinking about using this machine for a side project using VMs. And since I know of some memory lying around unused at the moment I think I'll go ahead and give the 8GB a try. I'll post back with my results.

    Sincerely,
    MXD

Like most of you, I have problems with the keyboard at dim light. What`s the best solution for it? Glowing stickers? To use a USB Powered Keyboard Light?

Please, tell me how do you manage to use the laptop in poor lit places.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

I use a Kennsington USB powered light ( link) which works perfect for me. There are other non-branded lights which can be found on ebay for a much cheaper price that should work just as well.

hi all, dont think i've posted before now.. but i've been using this notebook now for close to a year.. i wiped out Vista and have XP on here.. but i also gave Ubuntu a run on here as well.. i used 32bit ubuntu i might add, and it worked strait off a fresh install near perfect with all eye candy etc..

the bios on this laptop offers some good settings to help work around a tough linux install as well.. while not as feature packed as a desktops bios, it is when compared to other lesser laptops in the price range i paid for this one.

and i didnt mind the color right off the bat..

so all in all, i would buy this one again easily..
i'm able to play The Witcher Enhanced Edition with ease on this notebook, which surprised the heck out of me..

    cheers
