On the Best Buy website is says "not available for store pickup." I'm confused, are they in stock in the stores or just online only?

i would take it that that means since its a sale item you have to personally go into the store to buy it.. i did but i'm always at my local BB so i no the weekly deals...

Yeah you guys were right, the BB by me had almost 20 in stock so I feel better now that one will be available at the end of the week.

I took a look at the floor model, one of keys was broken. I fiddled around with the keyboard and I noticed that there was a prominent "clacky" sound. This was really the only drawback from what I saw.

Another question for those who own this already, how's the bloatware? I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to wipe it clean and do a fresh install with a normal Vista OS?

    First post:

I am heading to Bestbuy today to give this laptop a 'feel'. I have been researching a new laptop to replace my dinosaur Acer TravelMate for about a month now. CNET liked this laptop very much, more than the Samsung X460 I had my eye on. I am hoping the odd color doesn't take away from its qualified spec list.

I will give some of my impressions tonight. My even be typing those impressions on it.

Crysis will barely run on the 9300M GS video card. You'll need at least a 8600M GT or 9600M GS to run crysis decently

I will take this one, and return the HP 1125nr to BestBuy tomorow.

Any one have used it, please comment on it's battery life. I got different information about it's battery life, and really confuse about. Beside, I've yet to touch it, but some make comment that this look much ugly than the HP dv4-1125.
BTW, is there an Asus global warranty for this?

    Thanks

Fair enough.... but from experience, I can tell you that crysis does not run smoothly. My Asus U6V has the same GPU but with a better CPU, 4gb ram and it's almost impossible to play crysis even with the lowest details and resolution.

My first impression of the X83Vb was horrendous. However, the color scheme does grow on you after a while (this is my personal opinion of course, and different people may tell you differently). :)
This unit comes with only a 1 year North America warranty.

    Thanks, David.

But in you own point of view, is it better than the HP-dv4-1125nr? I want to make the final decision now, as I will have my sister to return the HP to BestBuy and get this one (same price).
Any ideas actually about pro and con of the 2 models?

    Thanks

Spec wise, the Asus is better. I personally hate the mirror finish touch pad on the dv4 and dv5 series, however, the overall aesthetics do look better than the Asus.

For the dv4-1125nr (from cnet review):
The good: Modern design; touch-sensitive controls are convenient and attractive; 64-bit Windows Vista and 4GB of RAM provide performance boost; HDMI and eSATA ports; comes with remote control.

The bad: Subpar battery life; glossy keyboard and touch pad don't provide the best feel; no FireWire, Bluetooth, or Draft N Wi-Fi.

I don't own the Asus X83Vb, but from what I saw at Best Buy, the X83Vb would be my choice between the two; simply because of the better hardware and features Asus has over the HP.

    Thanks, David.

My sister came to BestBuy before to touch it, and she does not like it because of aesthetic reason.
One more question, (sorry), do you think that the screen is better than the Dv4-1125 (since it has LED, while the 1125 is the normal screen)?

LED is definitely more desirable than regular LCD screens since they are usually brighter and consumes less power. It was hard to compare the 2 screens at Best Buy (there was too much light, and it's best to compare screens in a darker environment), but having the LED panel will most likely mean it's a better screen overall.

    No worries :) ;)

I've been looking at this laptop or an older Gateway M-6850FX (15.4") which has a T5550 processor and the ATI HD2600 graphics card that I've found for $629. The Asus seems to have a slightly more modern processor and better battery life while the Gateway has the better graphics card. For traveling and some 3D gaming (WOW in particular) which one does the community think is the better deal?

i love my Asus x83vb its fast at doing most stuff though i just spent 20 minutes on figuring out how to get the card reader to work i got it and it was user error on my part nothing with the computer... if anything i would advise the Asus over the gateway imo they are crappily built but thats mo you dont have to go by it at all but if you want a good computer at a great price go with Asus...

I am currently choosing either this laptop or the HP Pavilion dv9925nr.

Both are the same price (I got an extremely good deal for the dv9925nr)

I believe the performance on the Asus is slightly better, but the aesthetic appeal is a complete turn off to me.

I really really really really like the HP's 17 inch screen, which would be great for gaming if it had a different video card, other than its crap nvidia geforce 7150m.

I really only want to play counterstrike 1.6 and source and the 7150m will handle those games just fine, but I also want to try COD4. Some people actually got COD4 to work on the card, but it was laggish and the quality was below average. D:

I can't make up my mind... I should just buy both and put them in a giant blender :D

That 7150M should not even be called a video card, it is IGP and crap too IMO.
You would be VERY UNHAPPY in the long and short run.

Well, after looking at both the X83VB and X83VM I decided against both. Colors just are not my taste. I decided on the F8Va because Newegg is running a good deal on them that I couldn't pass up. The F8Va has a smaller dimension and weighs the same with better graphics. Not to mention it was only $100 more than the X83VM.

Now to find if a SSD will work in the F8Va. Hope this helped anyone.

Just picked it up today after work. Initial thoughts, the keyboard has a little flex to it but it's not a big deal. The touchpad is a bit strange, the vertical scroll can be awkward sometimes. I suppose to describe it as not super responsive.

The screen is amazing compared to my two year old HP laptop. Very rich colors and bright. Webcam works well, first time using one so no complaints. As some people said before me, not much bloatware... I uninstalled Norton right off the bat and will likely uninstall the trial Office as well.

I find myself moving the cursor as I type since the touchpad is quite large, but I can adjust. The click keys next to the pad are a little hard to depress.

Wireless N is insane. Very high download speeds when used with a Wireless N router. Major plus!

All in all, the computer is awesome for 650 bucks (currently selling at BB). It's light, low heat, and all around a good notebook. I'm just very picky on a few things!

hey guys, i just got this laptop and the next one up, there are two of these ASUS bestbuy exclusive machines, this one is the x83vb and the other is the x83vm, the latter gives you a 320G hd, 1GB 9600m gs, and the 2.26gh processor with a 3m cache.
I wanted the vb, cheaper one but BB only had the rebate on the vm. so i took the vm for $899. took it home and played Doom3, COD4, and GTAIIIsa. before i had a chance to install Crysis i got a nasty red stripe down the LCD so i took it back to BB and they had the rebate on the vb so i got $285 back! got the vb for $649. the vb sux compared the the vm for games, doom recommended a low setting while the vm played it on the highest. The Vista score on the vm was 5.0, the vb is only 3.5. im kinda discouraged that the vb isnt more capable, with the 512mb gpu i think it should be better. Oh well, for $649 cant beat it, and i dont mind the color. im gonna keep an eye out for the next 14days, if the vm goes any cheaper im gonna swap back.

i no i may give mine back to bb just to go build my own desktop to get better stats but if i can find out how to get rid of some extra foreign currency i wont get rid of the vb ill jus have to save up alittle more to get all the things i want in the desktop but overall the vb ricks imo though ive not got to test anything better as of yet....

As this one is not shown in Asus site, but i suppose that it's drivers around, and Asus should build this for BestBuy based on one of their current model.

Some said that it a counterpart of N80, but some said F80. Any one who have this please check the lable at the bottom, and please advise. Once we know the similar, we can use the other model drivers.

    Thanks

The X83 is not a counterpart of the N80 (The N80 is the replacement for the F8 series). Drivers for the X83 can also be found on the Asus website and select the notebook model you desire.

    Thanks, David.

However, the Asus site show no spec for the X83vb. I even checked with X80, but it does not match. I think this one is more or less very similar to the N80. Can any one give me an idea, what's it main chip? For F8, I think they use the SIS, but N80 is PM45.

i just got this laptop for christmas and i must say that it is great

the only cons i see are the battery life (which is almost the same with all laptops)

and that when you change the battery options the screen turns white.... and u have to reset ur settings

I think that you can use the program LifeFrame which has the shortcut on the Desktop.

For other program like Skype, it'll automatically detect the webcam.

If this is not a counter part to the N80 why do they include a drivers disk for the N80 and also when you go to the support link does the manual you can download happen to be the N80?

If you look at the actual picture of an N80 on the Asus site it also is identical in build as far as the chassis of the inside. The difference is the N80s have a 1 gb video card but they do have a model using the T5800 but on some of reviews people talk about them not having 64 bit os.

I do agree that the gold color of the keys was not the best idea but I can't believe how petty some of the reviews are for this.. clackiness of the keys? Oh gees how hard is it to push a mouse button. I don't have really any problem with fingerprints but now the shiny surfaces do really show/attract dust in bright light.

I am really impressed with this especially for the 650 I paid for it, what I don't understand is why the rating vista on their experience thing gives for it is only a 3.5 (it was a 3.6 but I updated and it changed which is not supposed to happen) it is in the high 4s on everything but Graphics for the desktop so that brings the base score down. But yet the gaming graphics are up like 4.8. My desktop rates a 5.9 across the board so I do have something to compare the performance on and of course this is not the same but for the money and the specs it is pretty darn good.

And also this is on sale again at best buy for 699.99

Love the notebook, and unlike many here I love the look and the quality of the Asus, I am somewhat computer ignorant, but my wife has a Dell, and she has had problems with it from the beginning, never again, because of her employment needs were going to switch computers the Asus is lightning fast and the differences are day and night. I would by all means purchase an Asus again in the future, and maybe next year I will 2010.

Welcome to the forums, and congrats on your new purchase :D I'm glad you like your new Asus! The X83 is definitely priced very competitively and the aesthetics is somewhat unique. As for your wife's dell, maybe it's time for some maintenance? eg defrag hard drive or clean install windows, clean out dust in fans/heatsink, etc...

Happy New Year from Viet Nam.

i just had a small issue with my built-in camera, since in low light condition for Skype application, it shows only in black and white mode. The control for the camera is faded out, and i could not touch it.

    Any suggestion?
    Thanks

I read earlier in the thread and in the manual online that this model has a SIM Card Compartment for insertion of a mobile sim card for access to 3G networks. The manual also makes the disclaimer that this function is unavailable for certain models.

Can anyone confirm if this feature is active on this Best Buy model and that they have in fact connected to a 3G network? Thanks
