When the machine is off the chip is no longer producing heat. If it's not producing heat then it can't get hotter, it's just what the rate of cooling is.

There is much less thermal inductance in this case so the temps remain pretty even.

Intel wont let you customise it just now, but by hooking up to several monitors then the default options are different on each and he could test that way.

It will only allow any modes reported to the GPU by the display.

I'm having another issue with my UX32VD. Am I mistaken that I should be able to set any program I choose to use the dedicated video card Nvidia 620M? The setting I set in the Nvidia control panel under manage 3D settings doesn't seem to be doing what I ask.
I have it set to auto-select, but then on the second tab "Program settings" I set the setting for an individual program. I noticed that for Photoshop, the dedicated GPU always kick in regardless if I set it to integrated graphics. The opposite is true for something I'm actually trying to use the dedicated GPU for, my video player PotPlayer. No matter if I set it to high performance, it isn't using the dedicated card. I can tell from the desktop notification icon that changes colors when it's in use. Even if I set the global setting to High performance, the dedicated GPU remains off.
I have the latest drivers (358.20) and Windows 8.1. -

The IGP is likely more power efficient for video, but check if the player you are using has issues with optimus.
-
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Does setting the global setting to IGP only make it load on the IGP? What driver version are you running?

I suggest taking an image backup of the machine and trying to update the drivers both direct from intel and nvidia.

Hi Stefanom62. I had exactly problems as you described above (only one drive shown on port 0). I had tried to set option raid in the bios and use ctrl+i when power on the laptop but could not get to raid configuration menu where I can deleted or add raid 0 or 1. Would you please explain more about the procedures to access the raid configuration menu or what key did you use. Thank you a million time in advance and have a great day.Last edited: Dec 6, 2015 -
Does anyone have recommendations on replacement Torx screws for the bottom? I have a few which appear to be stripped or otherwise damaged, and I would like to replace those. Alternatively, I would prefer to switch to more standard Philips screws. It looks like M2 (or M2.5) x 3mm might do the trick??

Thanks, will give them a try.

Hey, here's one 'lazarus' owner. I bought my Zenbook Prime (R4002) back in late 2012 and was super happy with it - for two months. Then got fed up with the HDD. Bought OCZ Vertex, stripped it, wrapped it into antistatic bag and custom mount. Also threw in the 8Gb memory chip.
This went fine until the stock power supply gave up. Went for Innergie 60W item and wa happy camper again - for 8 months, then the innergie fried my motherboard. Possibly the 60W from Innergie was not enough for the power-hungry i7.. At that time switched jobs and did not really need a Windows machine anymore. After some time wanted the Asus back to life so I went thru EBay and AliExpress to find a board. After three rip-offs (one even sent me i5 board and claimed I had ordered it - of course filed that for AliExpress). I was not willing to pay $500 for used motherboard, so search went on.. then got a deal with new v2.4 i5 board with $200 and though, what the hell; bought it and slammed it in. Worked quite nicely. Until - yes, you guessed it - that damn Innergie fried that board too. In the meantime the Vertex also was switched to Vector (250Gb), which by nature is 7mm casing. Karma was looking and then I found one i7 seller for $300 and went for it. It was the last generation v2.4 i7 , typed R4002V. Yay. This time assembed the board nicely, removed all the remains of the old thermal pastes and applied Arctic Silver 5 to all surfaces. Funny enough, keyboard backlight did not turn on. Followed this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/n56vz-keyboard-backlight-problem.701468/page-2#post9448488
and all was well. I use my machine to run Unity5 (and studying Lumberyard & Stingray) so I need power. This time my Zenbook is powered with Innergie 90W supply, should not be a problem anymore. -
Just to confirm, our UX32VD's have mini-VGA not mini-DisplayPort right? Some websites say mini-VGA and some say mini-DisplayPort. This would be relevant when trying to hook up to a 4k monitor, as our HDMI 1.4 only supports 4k @30Hz.

So basically I installed from scratch the OS and it went smooth.
Then I needed to install the drivers, and went to the official asus page, but there is no option for WIndows 10.
The latest is WIndows 8.1, but there are just a few drivers: Bios, vga, utilities bluetooth.
Does this mean that all the other drivers are installed automatically by Windows 10?
My supposition is No, since in example the SD reader was not working and I installed the driver available under "Windows 8" (many more available) and it started working.
ALso the left USB was having some problems and I had a Question Mark for a device not recognized in DEvice Manager.
Question 1: Does Anybody knows what extra drivers should we install for Windows 10 apart from the ones installed automatically?
Then I wanted to reuse the SSD Cache, because I downgraded from SSD 256 GB to spinning 1TB because of storage issue.
ANd here it came the big problem. I couldn't manage to make it work, it was saying that it was not mounted.
There are many guides online, but it's quite messy, because they are from different producers and use slightly different procedures.
I've found a recent version of ExpressCache 131180 for Windows 10 provided by Asus, but the first step "1. Run ECWin10Cleanup.exe via administrative command prompt (step1.jpg)" was failing. After trying to install anyway the software, from the info in the command prompt it was saying that was not mounted.
I've tried to follow different procedures, the main one form Acer forum using Lenovo files, where they said it was working also for other manufacturers.
I've tried to erase manually the partition from the SSD, to use a software that was creating 2 partitions, the first one of 10GB and the second the remaining space, and a third procedure suggesting to slect the disk number and perform clean. None worked.
Question 2: Does anybody knows a procedure to make the SSD cache working on WIndows 10 + UX32VD?
After trying all of this procedures, and installing some drivers, WIndows stopped working corretly. It was starting, reaching my desktop, but then getting stuck after 30 seconds from startup. I've tried at least 10 times, always the same result.
Booting from a Linux-Porteus stick and trying to mount the drives, it says that the partition files are corrupted. I managed to mount it read only to recover some files.
Question 3: SInce I ave a brand new hard disk, is there any chance it might be faulty, even if the Smart diagnostic is good, or the problem was most probably the driver mess I did?
I've bought this laptp second hand just a couple of weeks ago, so I'm still exploring my options.
Thank you! -
Anyone know a good place for a replacement battery on these? Mine could use one but the ones I've found are darn expensive, $150+.
I also wanted to share an interesting experience I had with the laptop. I realized one of the fans (GPU) had stopped working. Took it apart hoping to just clean it or tap the motor or something. The fan blades part of the fan actually pushed "in" a bit when I touched it (the other didn't). Cleaned everything put it all back together and it works. I realized after the night before I had tapped the bottom of the laptop on the floor a little hard when placing it down. That shock also matches the corner of the laptop and the way the fan would have popped "out".Last edited: Feb 26, 2016 -
After reinstalling windows, now my iSSD is not even recognized, and I had some slow restarts. SO I guess I should also calssify my ssd as a tumor and refer to this

No, as a cache, but the previous user (I took it second hand) used it as a primary drive at the beginning.
ANyway I already proceeded with the "surgery" and now it's great! -
Has anyone had their hinge break? Originally when I got the laptop I noticed the 4 screws that mount the hinge to the "body" of the laptop were loose and when I tightened them, the plastic that it screws into in the body cracked. I sent it in for warranty and all they did was slap some glue over the broken/shredded bits. It held up surprisingly well for another 3 years. I noticed the hinge was a bit loose again and opened it up to find the other side had started cracking and all the glue and parts on the broken side were loose. Is there any way to replace the plastic part the screws go into? For now I've added a sponge spacer on either side on top of the screws between the hinge and the bottom panel. This allows the hinge to stay wedged tight between where it's supposed to be mounted and the bottom panel. It seems to be ok for now, feels like it's supposed to, but I don't expect it to last much longer.

In first place, I have to say that Windows 7 and 8.1 worked PERFECTLY on UX32VD.
I'm truly dissapointed with my UX32VD since I updated to Windows 10. My Zenbook has turned into a slow and laggy pc. I've tried everything... I'm an advanced user and always managed to fix PC issues, but this time I can't find what the problem is, and it's driving me crazy.
I'm a designer and programmer. My UX32VD current config is: 512 SSD, i5, 4GB RAM. I have all Windows Updates installed, and all Drivers. No matter what I do, it's always the same. The system seems to work fine until I start using a browser (Edge, Chrome, Firefox)... When I play a youtube video, or listen song, or open some News page, the system start lagging, and will increase by time. If I have 1 video open, and a site with javascript adds, the proccessor start running at 100% and the lag start, slowing the general performance, making audio choppy, lagging video/streaming... and no way back... the system becomes unusable. It's like the processor not able to handle 2 or 3 proccess at the same time. I tried many things and nothing seems to fix this problem.
I've called Asus Support and they said that Windows 10 is only "partially" supported on UX32VD! So, what I'm supposed to do... sell a 1,5 yeard old PC?
Please help! -

Hi everyone.
I have an issue with my ux32v. It's only charged when the laptop is sleep or off. If i charge it when it's on, the charger indicator is on and off and goes on. The monitor says "pluged" and "on battery" over and over again. What's wrong with it? Is it the charger or the battery?
I need to have it plugged when I render my 3d.
Thanks in advance. BTW sorry for the english. -
I've had my UX32VD since the model's release in 2012 and brought it back from semi-retirement after some serious build issues with a Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 about the time Windows 10 was released. It's upgraded to a 500 gig SSD and 10 gig RAM and has worked fine on Windows 10 since I stopped using it for gaming, with just one exception--the touch pad's smart gestures are gone.
I'm a bit leery of installing the Windows 8 driver due to the warning I got that installation could mess up the computer. Has anyone else installed the Windows 8 touch pad driver on a Windows 10 machine? -
I'm having a strange problem with my UX32VD where the laptop does not fully power on. When I press the power button, the power button and the caps lock key light up, but nothing else happens on the laptop. After a short while, the fans kick in for a little bit. There is absolutely no video display or drive activity when this happens.
I can get the laptop to boot up properly through a few different methods. Either I power down and try powering on the laptop again multiple times, or I plug in a USB stick or two into the USB ports - and then magically the laptop starts up fully. The behaviour is no different if I physically disconnect the battery and try powering the laptop off wall power.
I have no idea what's causing this. I opened the case and checked for loose connectors, or anything that looked suspicious, and found nothing. Has anyone else had this problem, or could they recommend a fix?
I'm using the most recent BIOS available for the model, and I'm running Windows 10. The laptop has a dual SSD module inside (2x 128 GB).
Thanks!
Edit: Now I can't get it to boot properly even with power-cycling or plugging in USB sticks. Luckily I bought an extended warranty, so it looks like I'll be RMA'ing it!Last edited: Apr 20, 2016 -
Hi Takaji,
I had a similar issue and it turned out to be a problem with the nvidia chip so I ended up replacing the MB. -
Thanks for the information, SiestaKey. I ended up RMA'ing it. Yay for extended warranties!
-
Hello, I have a UX32VD-DS72 with the 2 128GB SSD, has anyone successfully upgraded them?
What's the best way, buy 2 256GB SSD msata, or a 512GB SSD sata?
Thanks! -
So I decided to play around a bit with the laptop, see how low I can get the temps under load. I got a SilverStone NB04 laptop cooler. I didn't expect too much from it. It seems to have helped about -3 degrees celsius under load. However with both the CPU and GPU stressed out, such as when rendering from Adobe Premiere, the CPU still hits 89C and starts to throttle. This is with the "turbo boost" TDP limit lifted with Intel XTU. This allows it to run at 2.8GHz until it hits 90C, or else the turbo would have backed off. I'm starting to wonder if it's better to let it do that than let it get too hot and have it thermal throttle anyway. At least while the nVidia GPU is also active.
I had an idea to connect the heat pipes under the bottom cover to the bottom cover with something thermally conductive. It would transfer more heat into the bottom case, and channel some away from the over-heated heat pipes leading to the fans. Do you guys think this would help at all? Has anyone tried "lapping", that is, sanding the heatsink to make it smoother?
Has anyone seen this article and tried undervolting the GPU through nVidia Powermizer Manager?

I also do remember heat issue. I think what I am going to do is take GPU and Video card off and reapply better thermal paste. I will report back if it helps.
Thanks. -
These 2 videos show you how to clean the fans and reapply thermal paste on Zenbook line which should be the same for this laptop.
-
-
Today I did another little cooling mod. I folded up a bunch of aluminum foil and stuck it onto the heatpipe, to transfer some heat from the pipe into the aluminum bottom shell of the case. At least while paired with a laptop cooler (SilverStone NB04) it seems to have made a difference!
Stress test: Prime95 small FFTs torture test + nVidia GPU enabled
Pre-mod: CPU = ambient + 63c, GPU = ambient + 43c
Post-mod: CPU = ambient + 60c, GPU = ambient + 40c
I might redo it (perhaps with thermal pads?), and do a proper write up with pictures. -
Some more insight while trying to squeeze the maximum amount of performance playing GTA IV (funny I only really play to test out the computer):
-If not using the GPU you can use Intel Extreme Tuning utility to up the TDP to 45W (something far above 17W will work) and the CPU can run at sustained full turbo speed.
-To overclock the video card on the latest drivers, you have to force the video card into P0 state (as opposed to the constantly switching state), or else the core clock won't overclock. You can do this with a bat file command to nVidia inspector.
-The CPU just gets too hot with the GPU also stressed out under gaming (reaches 89-90c).
-If left stock, the CPU will eventually start throttling even below 2GHz
-Disabling the turbo allows it to run at 2.4GHz almost all the time. You can do this with ThrottleStop. You can also use Windows' built in maximum CPU frequency control in power options, but the first step down from full speed seems to be 2.3GHz.
-I tried lowering the TDP from the stock 17W to 13W and it still starts throttling under 2GHz for some reason.
EDIT: Actually the throttling problem above seems to be because of a PROCHOT message from the video card to the processor, known as bidirectinoal PROCHOT or BD PROCHOT. You can disable this in ThrottleStop and the CPU will run at full speed until it hits its own PROCHOT, 90c.
I really really wish there was a way to undervolt the CPU or GPU. I am going to extract the bios and see what can be done with it.Last edited: Jun 9, 2016 -
have anyone facing can't boot after replace the HDD to SSD?
today i change the HDD to SSD and use the recovery disk to recover the SSD, but the UX32 can't boot up win
it go to the BIOS only when boot up, anyone face this before and fix it? pls help me to solve this, i really love this zenbook, it is a good design -
Hi,
beforehand sorry for my english.
When I change hybrid HDD, to 250GB SSD, I used Clonezilla for clone W7 and Ubuntu partitions and everything is OK. But I do not know if I can used i100 SSD for booting with another OS like Remix, Aros, Amikit, and others. Can somebody advise me? -
Checking out this forum back after three years. I just sold my UX32VD i7 after owning it for nearly 4 years. I was surprised the resale value was higher than my expectation: people appreciate light weight, aluminum body, slick design and, the quality of the supplied panel. In fact, when configured with the 1080p ips panel,it still has one of the best screens available in any laptop of its class. Everybody around praised its display whenever they saw it. I had to let it go because I needed/wanted a 17" laptop. Being spoiled with it, I certainly didn't want to consent to anything of lower quality in the replacement. I ended up with a laptop which has a 17.3" UHD IGZO panel and I am equally happy with it.

I can't believe it! My ux32vd needs 10-15 minutes to start up, and never fully shuts down by itself (screen switches off, but the computer still runs). Whenever it goes on standby/screen off it crashes and greets me with a blue screen after restarting. Thus sleep/screen off has been disabled for pretty much three years now.Two days ago I disabled hiberfil.sys as I was curious. Suddenly the computer shuts down fully for the first time in three years. Mind you, I did several full new installations in the past three years, both with driver update and without internet. Never helped. Now if it would start up quicker and would all of a sudden lose it's other technical problems.

After i did a clean install on my UX32VD, i noticed that issd part is not working properly. I can see it in device manager, bios but it is not working as a cache part. What can i do to fix that problem?
