What settings have you used? I'll have to check this out tonight.

    Hello,

Which UL30VT model would you consider to be a better purchase, the X1 or A1 model? the difference in price between them is minimal, but the apparently worse wireless card in the A1 is making me lean towards the X1. They are both stunning but I think I prefer the all black look of the X1 (even though I will have to clean it more!)

I've also noticed a UL30VT-X1K popping up on Amazon for cheaper than the other two, I think it has kindle installed or something, anyone know anything more about this?

    Thanks in advance!

I'd go with the A1. It's got better battery life. I just got mine Wednesday and I love it. If you have problems with the wifi, just add another antenna (directions floating around here somewhere). The silver looks really clean too :) You can find it on bing.com shopping for 686 with bing cash back, so I suggest doing that.

Well, just got my hands on the replacement for my faulty ul30vt-X1...

So far it works great and seems ok. Keyboard seems a bit stiffer than it did in the previous one and there is also less flex in this build(like 0 now). Came in with more up to date software's as well. (p4g 1.1.29 compared to 1.1.24 in my previous unit)

There's a couple of changes I do not like, however...
    1) This unit came with a louder HDD (quick check and it seems western digital)
    2) This X1 is actually equipped with Atheros wireless chip -.-

I'm curious if they shipped the laptop with a broken version of P4G. Can you try putting your laptop into suspend, then resume and see if the graphics button and/or changing P4G profiles lets you change from nVidia to Intel and vice versa?

Yes, they did. This turns out to be the save version installed on the Ver. 2 driver disk. I have random switching failures after sleeping for a period of time.

Baba88, glad you got a working machine. Your WD drive is louder than the original Seagate? Please post your drive model when you get a chance.

These are the drivers listed in V2.0 of the driver disk.

Well it looks like the price is just right on this laptop for me now. I just cant pic between black or silver. Black is my fav color but I think with the extras you get in the silver I may just have to get that. If the x1 had 2 year warranty then I would get that right now. Im still wondering if the price will go down anymore.

Anyone have any coupon codes for amazon.. lol

Despite purchasing the silver UL30VT-A1, I actually prefer the black aluminum finish due to it being more unique and sleeker IMO. I have always insisted on purchasing an Asus from a reseller rather than a retailer for obvious reasons such as free technical support and better personalized purchasing experience.

Amazon does offer coupons, but not very often for Asus notebooks. A good way for "pinching pennies" is to buy an Amazon gift card for under face value from ebay/craigslist and use that to purchase the notebook.

Very nice laptop. I'm really enjoying it so far.

What settings does everyone have on overclocking their GPU?

    Hey guys,
Bought one of these a couple of days ago and was going to do a fresh install of windows. Unfortunately the machine wont boot from a usb device. It is more likely to be my usb device, or do I need to update the bios.

I have changed the bot sequence so it only asked ro removable device, but all it says is please enter a boot device then press any key. This is despite my usb b drive being plugged in. I followed the instructions on the link on the front page.

Is it likely my usb drive just sucks?

    Thanks guys.

    Hey all,

My webcam doesn't seem to be working. It worked for a session of chat roulette but then when I went to try it again I get nothing. I deleted the asus bloatware utilities that make use of the webcam so I'm not sure how I can test it or see if it's working. All I know is that nothing comes up when I use webcam test on the internet or omegle video chat.

    Thanks

Try using the other 2 USB ports to see if that makes any difference. It could also be a corrupted OS file on your USB drive and I would try copying the OS again just in case.

Have you tried reinstalling the webcam driver? If that doesn't work, try going back to a couple restore points or back to the date when your webcam was still working. The restore utility should be in your control panel.

Was hoping for some advice, I need a laptop within the next week. I was looking at the U30jc but prefer 14", seems to be the sweet spot for me. How would the UL80Vt-A2 perform compared to the U30Jc? These are the tasks I use daily: websurfing, downloading, streaming HD video to my PS3, Microsoft Office (mainly OneNote). Would I even see any benefit of the U30's better processor and graphics? I apologize if this may be obvious, but I am not overly computer savvy.
Edit: and again I'm sorry if it's been covered, but what is the difference between the A1 and the A2 besides the color?

Processing power wise, the i3-350 in the U30Jc will be superior to the SU7300 in the UL80VT. GPU wise, the difference is negligible and probably won't be very noticeable.

If you're referring to the UL80VT-A1 and A2, then there's no difference in specs; only the color differs.

    Hey guys,

i thought i was crazy when i first got my UL30vt-A1. I could swear my screen flickers. when i say flicker i mean more like switching from cool to warm colors and back again. every time i scroll (basically when the screen changes) i see this change in color. it isn't a huge color shift but very noticeable.

note that this does not happen when i switch to the nvidia card. has anyone been having similar issues? I have been trying to figure it out but have yet to solve the issue.

any suggestions or tips would be much appreciated.

    thanks in advance

    Re: usb boot.
I followed all the instructions, and tried all the ports, but it's annoying. I will try a different usb drive, hopefully that works.

Change your "Power settings" under the intel display control panel. Intel is trying to save power by reducing graphics quality.

Also check Dave's post about your OS image for corruption. I can vouch for the Digital River and used same version, no upgrade.

Hey guys I need some help here.

I've downloaded the EVGA Precision overclocking tool for the g210m GPU but have no idea what settings to choose.

Right now I have it set at

    Core clock: 749
    Shader clock: 1814
    Memory clock: 934

Stable on everything but when I try to play Madden 07 (old game that I like) it crashes.

    Can anyone help?

PS - Madden 07 seems to play well with the integrated GPU.

Did you try patching Madden 07, or perhaps playing it with the affinity set to Core 0 only?

Is the webcam still listed in device manager? Is it possible that you have it disabled? Check the device power management window in Power4Gear.

Forgive my ignorance here but what do you mean by "affinity set to Core 0 only?"

It forces the application to only use one CPU core (core 0 in this case). This usually fixes multicore problems for certain apps.

Try 750/935/1655 like the FAQ says, it works great for me, it never crashed in any game while I had it overclocked. I also bumped up the shader even higher and that worked too but that first setting seems pretty safe and gets you something like a 15% boost.

You guys were not kidding about the amount of bloatware installed on these notebooks, wow. I have never seen so much.

CTRL+ALT+DEL and start task manager. Find the Madden executable in the process list. Right click and set affinity to core 0 only. Then head into your nvidia control panel and check to make sure that the application has control over 3D settings. In other words, make sure that the video driver isn't overriding and forcing an incompatible configuration. And, of course make sure that the game is patched to the latest version.

    hey guys,

new here. just bought one of these, figured this is a good place to get help. i've been googling, but i can't seem to find it.

my hdd clicks when being accessed. it's not a particularly loud click, but i'm worried that it could be a bad drive. anyone have any suggestions?

    thanks

I don't have a suggestion for you per-se, but I also just recently received my UL30VT and I have noticed the same faint "clicks" the hard drive makes.

I have read many other posts that mention noise and/or vibration with the stock hard drives in these laptops...so I assume it is relatively normal for this HDD model.

I have two WD drives in my two year old Gateway. Theses also make faint clicks during access. These guys have taken a ponding and run hot, up to 45C, due to poor cross cooling in the bay.

My point is faint clicks should not be a concern. I only get annoyed when smart errors appear..or i have to tap drive to get it spinning again.

    edit:

found out how to turbo33 in p4g utility. my next problem is playing 1080p (or even 720p) flash from youtube, it stutters. the cores only go to 50%. i haven't installed the new drivers to enable hardware accel, but shouldn't the core2s @ 1.7 ghz be able to handle it?

    Thanks

Well add my to the owners list. I just ordered one from J&R as it was 699.99 plus they had a $15 coupon off to make it $685. Then with 5% cash back from bing it made it $650. I just could not pass up this deal for $650 bucks. Well it looks like im set on notebook for a while now. I have my G50vt at home and my Ul30vt for on the road. Now I just need a good sleeve for it and a good notebook backpack.

I don't know if this applies to you, but see if this helps. I had clicks during IE, and this got rid of them. (I saved this info from some site, but I didn't save the site name itself).

Click Start > Control Panel > Sound
    Click the Sounds tab
Scroll down the list under Program. Under the Windows Explorer section, highlight Start Navigation.
Under the Sounds box, select (None) > OK, close Control Panel
You should no longer hear the clicking noise when you select links in Internet Explorer or open directories in Windows Explorer.

I played the Avatar 1080p at Youtube just fine.

I also played The Hangover 1080p MKV as well without a problem.

---with the NVidia GPU, of course---

have you all installed coreavc on this laptop so that you can use the intel vid card to play 720p videos?

    http://corecodec.com/products/coreavc

I did that on my netbook and was able to watch 720p. I was thinking that may help save battery life so that you dont always have to use the nvidia card but only for 1080p files

well the issue isn't MKV 1080p, i could play those on my 2.0 ghz pentium M single core with media player classic.

i'm talking about flash, i have 10.1 installed (without the nvidia hardware accelerated graphics drivers). but i thought a core 2 duo would be able to handle it (even if it was 100% cpu usage).

Im was thinking the same thing. The cpu in this should be able to play a 1080p file say in vlc. If you use MPC-HC it will use the gpu to do that then.

I just recieved my UL30VT-a1 the other day and I am loving it so far :D

The ONLY thing bugging me is the HDD noise. Just curious, for those of you who have switched/replaced the hard drive for something quieter (non-SSD), which did you get? The WD5000BEVT seems to have good reviews.

    Thanks!

OK, so change your drive out. I have the WD5000BEVT installed but not for noise abatement. Both drives sound about the same up close, very close.

Do you have another drive to do a quick swap for a noise check? BB has a two week return policy.

I paid about 75$ a month ago from Negg.

Running at 1700 I get occasional skip, @ 1900 it is perfectly smooth using Intel video with CPU running 22 to 44%. This is using Avatar 1080p on YouTube with 10.1 beta. These are LV processors, right? Anyway I don't see any difference running on our 720p screens. I won't let flash near my big screen :)

Are you guys keeping the "All White" wallpaper that ASUS uses during battery save mode? If I change this to a more traditional wallpaper how much will battery life change?

Does anyone have a quick fix to the mushy left mouse button? I don't want to send it to asus just to fix this little thing. it seems like after fixing it, the button will continue to become mushy because i use it a lot.

@assassin24: This ugly wallpaper change must be the stupidest thing about P4G. Luckily you can turn it off in P4G settings.
The only way I can imagine this saving any energy, is by allowing you to dim down display more and still see desktop quite well due to increased contrast. Other than that there's no logic behind it. In fact white means more pixels are tuned on, but that's nitpicking since most of display's power draw comes from back-lighting which is on whether you use black or white wallpaper.
I wish I could turn off style change also, because text also gets brighter and there's not enough contrast in programs like Firefox.

@Handonam: It's not rly a fix, but you might try taping on touchpad for click. I would gladly remove bottom buttons, couse 1, 2 and 3 finger clicks work like charm. I also switched double-tap-drag setting to "tap to release" mode, so I can drag across larger areas of screen.
